Camping available at both low and high elevations, wonderful hiking trails, and the Bristlecone Pine grove on the way to Wheeler Peak has to be experienced to be believed. Great roads (straight and clean 2-laners) all the way there, and the ride across the Black Rock Desert is awesome (watch out for low flying F-16s). It would, I think, still be pretty cold there for camping now due to elevation. Back to lurk mode. - -- Bob L. Landlocked in Utah, dreamin' of the islands... The owner of the small Chevron station in town can no longer use his non-complying underground tanks and is trying to get by with two temporary 500 gallon tanks above ground. Consequently, he only carries "regular" and he doesn't have that by the weekend because he gets his 1,000 gallon delivery on tuesday and it's long gone before saturday. He was talking about throwing in the towel. You can get gas about eight miles east of Baker on U.S. 50 (all grades), get a burger, play the slots, etc. at "The Border Inn" so stop there on the way to Great Basin if you're in need. Otherwise, you'll be backtracking to the state line. Saw no law enforcement down the west side of Utah Lake - Eureka - Delta on thursday, but today passed two Sheriff's Deputies west of the lake and the Highway Patrol was working between the sand dunes and Delta. I'd be careful there when going down and back next month since that will, of course, be a saturday. West of Delta you can go as fast as you want, say the locals. Too bad it's all straight and pretty boring. Didn't take the time to go in to the park, but there appeared to be quite a bit of snow. The locals did say that the top campground is usually open for Memorial Day so it must come down out of there pretty fast if the weather warms up. It was my first attempt at putting on something like this. Tom has given it plenty of space in the Stinger (thanks Tom) and I've put an ad in the classifieds since last Saturday. Evidently, it wasn't advertised enough, and perhaps it's not enough time with the ads that I did have. PSAs can only be used for non-commercial events. By making it free, I can then utilize the PSAs and draw many more students from the University of Utah into the show. I'm putting tickets at the Union Building front desk tomorrow, and there's an ad going into the Chronicle. I also plan to try to get PSAs run on KRCL and KUER. I really didn't expect too much from this, and went into this knowing full well that I wouldn't be recouping my costs. I was (and still am) glad to pay Helge for his efforts. However, the number of tickets purchased is far surpased by the 400 seats available in the theater. At the rate they were selling, we would have only had maybe a half dozen more by Tuesday. At this point, my objective is to give Helge a reasonable sized audience. He's happy, he's getting his fee. I'm happy, and I am GENUINELY glad to be doing this for the club and for the riding population as a whole. More importantly, I hope that we can get some future riders to come to the show and maybe understand a little what makes us tick. Let people who may otherwise not felt that $12 was worth seeing this thing know that it's free, and let's introduce some non-riders to Helge. I think it sounds like a great idea. - -- Mike **************************************************************** The Beehive Beemers Internet Mailing List http://www.beehive-beemers.org **************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 02:49:50 -0600 From: "Michael Clark" Subject: BB: An apology I'd like to apologize for the tone of my previous messages. I have little doubt that people are interested in the Helge Lecture, and that any shortcoming in the attendance can be attributed to my lack of experience in such maters. I know many of you bought tickets, and I appreciate your support. Please accept my apology. The Beehive Beemers is a great club and I'm very pleased to be associated with it. YOUR ATTITUDE IN WILLINGLY MAKING A SIGNIFICANT TIME & FINANCIAL SACRIFICE ARE ALL TOO RARE IN OUR COMMUNITY. OR ANY OTHER FOR THAT MATTER. PERSONALLY, I DO NOT HAVE THE INTERNAL COMPOSITION TO NOT PAY FOR WHAT WILL BE AN OUTSTANDING PRESENTATION. I WILL NOT EVEN ENTERTAIN THE IDEA OF TAKING A FREE RIDE TO WATCH HELGE'S RIDE. YOUR GRACIOUS OFFER TO UNDERWRITE THE COSTS IS ANOTHER TREAT TO THE MOTORCYCLING COMMUNITY. I HOPE THOSE WHO DO NOT DEMAND TO PAY THE ENTRY FEE UNDERSTAND JUST HOW GRACIOUS YOUR OFFER WAS. THANKS TONS. Remind me again when and where. I didn't think I would be able to come but that may have changed and if so, would like to go. I'm sure an event like this is well worth $12.00...hell, most of us blow that much on chewing gum each week! Good question, here's the link: http://www.beehive-beemers.org/helge.html This page sends you to Helge's page, and the page for the Fine Arts Museum, with maps and directions. - -- Mike **************************************************************** The Beehive Beemers Internet Mailing List http://www.beehive-beemers.org **************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 18:06:19 -0600 From: "Tom Deaver" Subject: Re: BB: Helge Petersen Mike, I paid Ted for two tickets for my self and son. I support your efforts and feel your generosity is wonderful. If you are worried about filling the auditorium even with free tickets I have several honors students who would like to use a free ticket to attend. These are upper classmen and women who, I feel know how to attend such a function. would it be ok with you to distribute 9 or 10 tickets to these young adults? I can even give extra credit for course work for attendance if you need lots of extra people.
