I am acting Vice President of the Club, a member of the Executive Board, and club interface for the Trials events on Thursday September 16th (I am also a proud Beehive Beemer). So, while with my executive board hat on I want to encourage BB members to volunteer for any segment of the Park City Motor Cycle Week event for which they have interest, my own interest is selfish. We need observers, judges, gate managers etc. for the Trials events. I have had requests from club's out of state to participate as volunteers for this event, however, before we confirm that source, we'd like to ensure that our Utah Club's have first and full opportunity to participate. So, I'll tout the Trials in this note. Details of how to volunteer are found on the club's website: www.parkcitymotorcycle.org. But, here's a digest as it pertains to the Trials volunteer. For a free pass for the remainder of the week - including motocross, flat track, and road race a trials volunteer must: 1. Attend a Wednesday evening barbeque. 2. Post/during barbeque - receive training on how to judge a trials event 3. Optional - pre barbeque - attend trials clinic put on by AHRMA (great opportunity) 4. Work 8 hours on Thursday assisting AHRMA judge events, manning gates etc. (lunch, drinks for the day provided). I think this is a real "two-fer." On the one hand a free pass to three of the four major events for the week. On the other hand, a volunteer gets to build a knowledge of the whole Trials discipline. Its fascinating. I walked the 12 sections of the Steamboat venue last year. I've also found getting acquainted with our local Trials community - CZ Bob in Logan, Dave Wand at Rimrock Racing, Brad Burnton, Head of Wasatch ials Assn. (still exchanging calls) and others as extremely interesting. Among others, I've found that a 275 pound 6''7" "oversized person" can ride one of these bikes. And, I'm interested! Mike Fenner of AHRMA wants to do an unprecedented 16 sections at Park City and expects a record 200 entrants from around the United States. HOW DO I VOLUNTEER? The volunteer signup sheet is on the website, along with procedures to enroll. If I'm up in Victor, I'll bring some forms. I want to personally keep track of the Trials volunteers so it is OK to fax them to me at 435 649 3951. I'll acknowledge receipt, and ensure you are properly registered. I will also add you to my Trials email broadcast list to keep you well informed of the issues, interesting facits, etc. of Motorcycle Week. I hope you can help out. Jeb/Tom, Thane suggested that if I can make it to Victor, you would give me a couple of minutes to tout this in person. I am happy to answer any questions via this list as well. PS. Thane said he wanted to sign up. This is a great opportunity to be a player in Utah's first major motorcycle event. We need your help! Ducati races on Ha= rley rumours, denies talks

By Sara Marani

MILAN, July 8 (Reuters) - - Shares in luxury motorcycle maker Ducati rose sharply on Thursday on speculation another biking legend Harley Davidson (NYSE:HDI - - news) was ready to make a bid, but the rally sputtered when Ducati denied there were talks.

Four months after the Italian company floated on the Milan bourse, Ducati saw its shares soar as much as six percent as investors pounced on a newspaper report that a tie-up between the two classic motorbike brands would make perfect sense.

``Neither Ducati nor its principal shareholder TPG have had any contacts with Harley Davidson concerning a possible acquisition of an interest in Ducati,'' Managing Director Federico Minoli said in a statement.

The remarks disappointed an Italian market buzzing with almost every kind of merger talk this year, sending Ducati shares back to close 1.2 percent up on the day at 2.95 euros.

But investors remain aware that Ducati has all but asked its transatlantic rival to knock at the door, telling markets an alliance between Ducati and Harley Davidson would be ideal.

``Our brands are so complementary that from every standpoint if Harley wanted to buy us, I don't think we could say no,'' Minoli told financial daily Il Sole in a recent interview.

On Thursday, the same paper reported rumours were rife on Wall Street that Harley Davidson could at last be interested in buying Ducati, which has a market value of $400 million.

There was no immediate comment from Milwaukee-based Harley.

Known as the Ferrari of motorcycling, Ducati was listed on the bourse after an oversubscribed public offering in March at a price of 2.9 euros.

But the shares have had a mixed ride since their debut when they got off to a slow start, swerving between 2.49 euros and 2.99 euros. Italian traders mostly express confidence the shares will perform, however, as one of Italy's few glamour stocks.

``It's a sexy name, everyone will want to own a bit of it,'' a Milan-based trader said following the initial public offering.

On the downside, traders say Ducati has been exposed to the economic crisis in Asia and that interest in the flotation had been hit by the partial seizure of Italian markets during a wave of complicated deals in telecoms and banking.

Founded in 1926, Ducati sells its high-speed racing-inspired motorcycles in more than 40 countries worldwide.

In the first quarter of 1999 Ducati saw its registrations rise 11 percent to 6,915 compared with the same period a year ago, and in key German and North American markets, units sold rose nearly 50 percent and 40 percent respectively.

At the company's stock market launch in Milan and New York Minoli said Ducati was planning to invest a ``significant'' amount of the money raised in expanding its accessories line and in May it opened its first North American showroom, featuring leather biking gear by top designer Donna Karan (NYSE:DK - - news).

Have you seen the latest recall notice??? They are recalling practically every machine built for a variety of problems. I watched Fran Crane try to haul one to the finish line in both the 1088 and the '97 Iron Butt. Mechanical DNF in both cases. As if that weren't enough, any decent Japanese sportbike built in this decade will run and hide from the Buell on a snaky road, and for 2/3 the money or less. No, they're not doing so hot IMHO.
