In addition to the list rules Jill posted earlier this morning, here are a few suggestions that are established netiquette. Most of these aren't rules, though Jill and I have been reminding people offlist about them. Basically, the common theme of all these suggestions involve wasted bandwidth. Most of you I think will agree that keeping that to a minimum is a necessary thing on the buffy list due to the high traffic (which Jill and I think is GREAT, BTW! I've really been enjoying a lot of the discussion going on here, and look forward to seeing more of it as the series progresses.) NETIQUETTE 1. Please do not quote an entire message when replying. General netiquette suggests editing something down to four lines when replying, especially if your response only pertains to a portion of the original. 2. Sigs of up to 6 lines are acceptable. Longer sigs take up unnecessary bandwidth so please try to keep them to the minimum. At a bare minimum, you should put your email address at the bottom of your post in case someone wants to respond privately to you. Some mailers strip out the headers, where this information is usually contained. 3. When in doubt, and particularly when something is off topic, take it to private email. Since the reply to on the list is set up to automatically go to Buffy, Jill and I are well aware that mistakes will happen from time to time. If it does, you'll probably get a note from one of us about it. If you do happen to make a mistake, there's no need to post to the list apologizing, since that also is a waste of bandwidth. Going to private should be your first choice. If you do post something off topic to the list please include an ObBuffy in your post. 4. Please, no one line "this is a test" posts. If you think there's a problem with the list, please take one or more of the following steps. a. Write to either me or Jill (romana@mindspring.com or jtkirby@mcs.com) and tell us what you think the problem is. We'll answer you ASAP. b. Send a s*bscribe note to majordomo@xmission.com since you may have been uns*bscribed due to bouncing. If you aren't s*bscribed, that'll resub you; if you are s*bscribed, you'll get a note back saying you're still on the list. c. If you *must* send a test post (and this should only be as a last resort) please make it a post relating to buffy. 5. No "me too" posts. Those should go private, or should include more discussion. HOUSEKEEPING We're coming to the end of the academic year, and I just want to remind those of you with college accounts that you won't have access to over the summer to uns*bscribe from buffy. Mailboxes and disk quotas fill up and messages start bouncing. When that happens, Jill or I will unsubscribe you from the list, but doing it yourself before you go away makes our job a lot easier. Also, since it's not clear, the address for the list is buffy@xmission.com, whether you're on the regular list or on digest. I think that's about it. Back to your regularly scheduled Buffy discussion. :-) Sharon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 1997 15:07:28 -0400 (EDT) From: EDraven708@aol.com Subject: BUFFY: My Crossover Idea How about Buffy, meets Firever Night. He is investigating one of the many Sunnydale High School murders, and they at first become friends. Until Buffy discovers that he is a Vampire, then she tries to kill, him off. In the end they realize that he is not all that bad, and let him live. I think It might work out if she killed him even. That would be really cool. I also love the X-files crossover idea. Is it just me or do TV shows not do real crossovers anymore? They do guest spots, but noone is ever the character they play on there own TV show. Networks should band together to make really cool, shows. If there's no Angel until the next season I'm afraid that the consequences will be very grave. I watched Angel (the episode) twice yesterday. I was spending the night at my friends, and subtlely drawing them deeper into my Buffy obsession . I had shown them Never Kill a Boy on the First Date (you know because of the FUN) and then the wimps fell asleep at around 2(2:30) in the morning. So I stayed up watching Angel by myself, in the dark surrounded by sleeping people. So the next morning they told me that they wanted to see more of Angel (my plan is working..*evil laughter*). Well of course I wasn't about to refuse so I watched it again. What a great episode, I think I've seen it 6 times now..(that doesn't mean I'm obsessive does it). Mailstrom and pine mail(via telent) never actually download mail that you're reading onto the computer you're using. Instead, you are opening a connection "window" with the network computer and reading mail on that machine, instead of on the machine you're actually typing on. If nothing is actually getting downloaded onto the machine you're using, it's easy enough to use a password system to enable only the right people are accessing the right e-mail accounts. Does anyone think that it was the 'real' Amy in the beginning of the ep who tried out for cheerleading and talked to Buffy in front of the Catherine the Great statue? I mean, later when Buffy and Giles are at Amy's house, Amy (in her mom's body) tells them that her mom switched bodies with her a few MONTHS ago. I didn't get the feeling that the episode was that long of a time period. But if not, then was Amy's mom in Amy's body the whole episode except at the very end? It seemed to me that it was really Amy at the beginning, but that would mean that the ep was a few months time period, which doesn't seem right. But if it was really her mom in her body during tryouts, she probably would of made it on the team. Okay, I will stop overanalyzing now. Gotta take my son for icecream. Anyone else? There are so many shows out there, tons more than we would think and Buffy (a new show) is "almost" in the top 100. I'd say that's pretty good considering it was a mid-season show and all the moving around it's done due to schedule and affiliate changes. Plus, there's movies and sporting events that happen only once and therefore grab a larger portion of the viewing audience. You know ER and Seinfeld didn't just magically appear in the top ten the first season of the show. Those shows had to work to get there. And then there's shows like "90210," "Party of Five," and "Melrose Place" that never make it into the top 100 (or even the top 200). (Okay, I know these shows can't compare to the excellence of our beloved Buffy, but you get the idea.) So, I'd say Buffy is doing pretty well, and just imagine where she'll be in the ratings next season after we've had a whole summer of spreading the word about this great show! Angel though reminds me of another kind of good vampire and that was from the best vampire movie made for the last 20 years (Buffy excluded) and that was Dance With A Vampire. A cheap yet mesmerizing film about a vampire and his victim. I remember I saw it 2 days before i went to see Interview With the Vampire and Dance even though it was cheaply made was far, far superior to Interview. Well the reason that i brought this up is because in Dance it was about a vampire who wanted to kill his victim and yet did not want to. Basically it came down to who had a stronger will to live. The movie is just about all talk between the vampire and victim - think Dinner with Andre. Must watch film for all Buffy fans. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 May 1997 18:23:18 -0400 From: Laertes@webtv.net Subject: Re: BUFFY: Willow, Angel Acronyms and Stuff Acronym for Carpenter if she (fingers crossed) becomes a regular. I'm not sure it can even be seen in every household, like an NBC or an ABC can. Similarly, since they are so new, people tend to ignore them or not weight them significantly, and thus ignore them. Yes, it was the 104th show for that week. (What week was it? Was it the repeat episode?) Don't forget that Buffy is giving WB its highest Monday night ratings ever, and most likely has a highly-influential demographic. (Viewers 16-42, or whatever it is these days.) Lastly, science-fiction shows and genre shows, in general always take time to find their audience. Babylon 5 didn't find its audience right away. Nor did X-Files or the original Star Trek. (And Cheers just barely got renewed for a second season, but that's off-topic here.) You just have to pray with a genre show that the idiots in charge will allow them a little rope at first. And, as others have stated, this is not the best time to launch a show - in the spring, with not much hype, when a prime section of its demographic is busy with finals. When the other networks are getting ten times more coverage for their spring replacement series (which all failed miserably, I might add.) Buffy will be renewed. It doesn't require you to watch every episode to "get it." You can watch it with your brain turned off and still "get it." You don't have the lead actress forced on the show by the network, who then turns out to be a disaster, causing budget over-runs and havoc on the set. Network execuvites love that kinda stuff. - -Augie - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Augie De Blieck Jr. * augie@nic.com * AugieDB@compuserve.com VR.5 FAQkeeper - Watch VR.5 on The Sci-Fi Channel Tuesday Nights, 10 p.m. EST! Distribution of the new networks is still spotty, so their shows tend to get lower ratings because fewer homes can see them. (We still don't have a local WB station; we get a rebroadcast from a different city.) Also, note that the only WB *drama* that did better than Buffy is "Voyager" which has the whole Trek Franchise behind it. The other WB shows on the list are all sitcoms. Since no networks wants to be all sitcoms (I think...) I doubt Buffy's in danger. And Buffy's clearly a "cult" show, meaning it'll take it a couple of years to find its feet, a la X-Files. As long as the quality stays high, the show will eventually catch fire, in all likelihood. Then you'll have the prestige of being one of the Few and Proud who watched Buffy before it became a hit.
