The thing is that other than a few select big markets, there are no real area breakdowns for Buffy because it hasn't aired in a sweeps period until now. (current May sweeps) Local markets only get localized ratings during sweeps ratings peroids because it is too expensive for the ratings people to sample every week. (If anyone wants the full explanation, email me offlist) Is Buffy making a profit for WB right now? I seriously doubt it. In the syndication market for hour dramas, a 4.0 is assumed to be the point at which a show is profitable. For a tightly budgeted-show with prime advertising demographics like Highlander or Babylon 5, you can get away with a 3.5 or so, and still earn money. Get below 3, and it's hard to get advertising $$. The good thing is that WB seems willing to take chances on "marginal" ratings in an attempt to build itself a brand name. Buffy offers a certain level of name recognition, and has gotten a lot of good press, so WB hopefully feels that they've got a chance of turning a profit on Buffy in season 2. Like Giles said at the end "Your timing is impeccable" Giles, Talent Show, Theatre I kept thinking of ASH and his background in the theatre. I might have a lead on getting pictures of him as Frank-N-Furter :D Loved his smirk when Buffy and Co. were forced to be in the show after they ribbed him for producing it. Thanks to who ever mentioned the small scene of B/W/X doing their scene, I made sure I kept the VCR to tape it. Did anyone else notice the "American Gothic"esque stance that Buffy and Xander had at the end when they moved closer together after Willow ran off the stage? Never fear the DM looks to be back up and running as good as before :D Cordelia ACK! *CRINGE* Whitney Houston would be rolling in her grave....well that's if she was umm dead. No more needs to be said. Oh loved how Giles got her to go away! Day after Moloch? Someone said that this looks like it took place after they fought Moloch, but that took place at night, so no need to leave school during the day, right? Also in the scene when Buffy is looking for Morgan and gets confronted by Snyder, there is a point when she is looking at something and over her shoulder is the image of something that looks like Moloch, did anyone else notice this? Syd & Morgan Any other VR5rs get a feel of Deja Vu with this name? My Closed Captioning had it spelled Sid, though, I prefer Syd :D (Hey Gee do you think this will finally get Sydy to watch? She was able to catch 45 mins of last wks though :D ). Hey wasn't Syd's first watcher/keeper on VR5 named Morgan? I loved the complete turn around making us think that Syd was the demon then having it be the *magician*. I didn't see it coming! I feel sorry that Morgan died :( but I guess it was going to happen eventually with brain cancer. Loved the scene when Syd is telling Buffy and Co about what he does *demon hunter*, Giles better close his mouth or flies will fly in :D Buffy and the Locker 2 to the left, 3 to the right *SLAM!* Great way to get into a locker :D Buffy and Being Nervous I thought it was a bit out of character for her to get scared about something being in her room being the slayer and all, even if it was something she said she didn't like. Bunny Suit Loved the line: "Ok everyone look at me like I'm in a bunny suit, cause that's how stupid I feel for saying this" Red Rob? Okay I thought when Xander had Syd and was making it *talk* he at one point was saying something that I took as "redrum, redrum" which is Murder backwards and also a nod to "The Shining". But my closed captioning had it was "red rob, red rob", but CC isn't always correct, so I prefer to think it was "redrum", anyone else? Willow helping Giles I think that is so cool, adds more to the "Willow in Training to be a Watcher" theory. Xander, Willow and Giles reaction to Syd's disappearance Loved it when Xander hoped on to the table when he realized Syd was gone and then Willow and Giles' response when he told them, Xander: "He's gone. Syd's Gone" Giles: "What! Whoa" Willow: "Unh" *backs up looking at ground* Other Slayers and Hunters Well we now know that one was a Korean, so that all don't have to be *blonde* valley girl Californian types :D And there are other type of *slayers*, in this cause a Demon Hunter, so we can assume there is others as well. Armin Shimmerman Great guest role, wonder if he'll stay on here and do DS9 at the same time. Someone mentioned that someone is due to die on that show, but I like Quark, so I don't want him to die. Having Armin on the show might actually draw in new viewers, STrek fans, DS9 fans, etc. I'm a bit confused as to why Giles got a wierded out look when he saw Snyder. Araza" Subject: BUFFY: SPOILER: The Talent Show S P O I L E R S P A C E ! ! ! Hi everyone! First, I just wanted to say that I'm new to this list (I've just recently discovered it), but I've been watching BtVS since the pilot--well, I missed about the first 10 minutes of it--but I've been watching it ever since. I just have to say, this is one of the most refreshingly funny, witty, entertaining new shows that's been on lately. I have to admit, I had some doubts when I first heard about it. Not to offend those who love the movie--I thought the movie was funny in a corny sort of way--but I didn't expect this series spin-off of the movie to be so well-written. But I really love this show!!! Like I said, the stories and plots are well-written (I LOVE all those memorable, witty one-liners!), the characters are likable (the actors do such a great job!), the make-up and special effects are good considering their low budget...I just can't say enough! Anyways, about tonite's episode...I noticed in the previous digests how people were worried about the use of ventriliquist dummies since they've often been represented in other shows as evil (e.g. Friday the 13th series). But I LOVED the spin that BtVS put on it!!! The scene after Buffy and the dummy's fight, when they realize that they had each other figured out all wrong...that was ingenious!! After that, I actually thought the demon was the new principal!!!...he was acting way too weird for me. Anyways, I thought this was one of the most funniest episodes!...It really made me laugh out loud. And yet, it also had sad moments too, like the ending. The ending was kind of funny, in a sad way (if that makes sense) 'cuz all of them are standing on stage with a dead beheaded demon, Buffy's holding a "souless" dummy and everyone in the audience is thinking (like the principal) "I don't get it..." And, I really think the writers must read this list because I've noticed how the mortality issue was brought up--when Emily, the ballerina, dies, Xander says, "I hate this school." It goes to show that the students aren't as unaffected as we might've thought. Also, the fact that the new principal brings up former events--ex-Principal Flutie being eaten, the spontaneous combustion of a cheerleader's hands, missing persons, etc--shows that SOMEONE notices their IS something weird going on in the Hellmouth. The writers are doing a great job with consistency in my opinion--the only exception to my knowledge was in IR-YJ, when Buffy's profile changed from one computer to the next--but hey, no one can be perfect all the time, right? I have questions about former episodes, but I'll leave that for another e-mail. HBA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 May 1997 00:18:26 -0700 (PDT) From: HBA Subject: BUFFY: Questions... Hi, I just had a few questions that I was hoping some of you could clear up for me: 1) In "Angel", I missed the explanation of why Angel changed from being the most ruthless vampire ever (my roomie decided to pick that time to talk to me about something as stupid as fruits and in/digestion...sheesh!!!) Anyways, can anyone paraphrase WHY Angel changed? I heard the part where he killed this girl who was "dumb as a post", but can someone please clear up that part about gypsies? Was the girl he killed a gypsy also? 2) Did Angel say that Buffy kind of reminded him of the girl he killed, the one that was "dumb as a post"? If so, shouldn't Buffy take that as an insult? 3) Does anyone know if they'll be rerunning all the episodes, including the pilot, this summer? And if so, when? 4) Does anyone know if there's a newsgroup for BtVS yet? 5) Also, in the last few digests, people have paralled BtVS with some Vampire book series. Can someone mention the author again? I want to check them out... 6) Is the series's Buffy suppose to take off exactly where the movie Buffy left off? Also, someone had said that there was a book prior to the movie. I was just wondering...did the book-Buffy experience cramps as vampire warnings like the movie-Buffy did? Because the series' Buffy clearly doesn't have 'em!! But it would've been interesting, esp. with the series-Buffy's interactions with Angel!!!...but then again, maybe that's why SMG's Buffy doesn't get cramps--would've ruin that whole Angel's-a-vampire surprise... Thanks in advance, HBA--the Keeper of...um...nothing, I guess... Cordelia is the constant reminder of the callow youth Buffy once (to some extent) was, the bastion of self-concerned audacity that somehow remains clueless to the goings-on of the Hellmouth. Buffy certainly seems to *want* to forget about her responsibilities at times, but then... who would she be? She's done a lot of growing up for high school; look how far she went even in just the movie. Cordelia's something of a reminder of what that high school "normalcy" is. Granted, Cordelia can be a bit over the top even to me, but then, we packed heat in my high school. Every good hero needs an opposite to maintain a contrast; i think Cordelia provides that. - -felix +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | felixcat@ecicnet.org "Righty-O, Dammit!" http://members.aol.com/felixcat42 | | Ice Station Zebra | | "Bringing you the tools you need for World Domination" | | and keeping Willow's Mac | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 May 1997 00:03:26 -0700 From: jen@rio.com Subject: BUFFY: "One Slayer Per Generation"? The Puppet Show episode contained a reference to the short lives most Slayers can expect to live. Given that there's one Slayer born per generation, what does this say about the "ground rules" of the show's mythos? Anyone want to help me speculate? Say a generation is twenty years (the usual definition for census purposes, I think.) I see two possibilities for how the chain of succession for Slayers could go: 1) Slayers don't overlap. That is, a new Slayer isn't born until her predecessor dies. If you assume that a new Slayer probably isn't going to be much good until she's at least fifteen years old at the earliest, that means that after every Slayer's death there's at least a fifteen-year Slayer-less period that happens while the new Slayer grows up. What are all the creepy-crawlies doing during that period -- just preying on people unopposed? Or do ordinary human monster-hunters have to fill in the gap? This Slayer-less period is especially unpleasant if you take the "once per generation" literally -- as in, one Slayer born every twenty years or so, meaning the average Slayer gets around five "working" years before she dies. So 75% of the time humanity goes unprotected. 2) The other possibility, which might make for some interesting fanfic, is that Slayers *can* overlap. There's one per generation, meaning one born every twenty years -- but that happens whether or not the previous generation's Slayer is still among us. So in addition to 17 year old Buffy, there could be a 37 year old Slayer out there somewhere from last generation (assuming she's managed to live this long), and a 57 year old Slayer, and so on. That would minimize the problem of no Slayers 75% of the time. You'd only get a completely Slayer-less period if a previous generation's Slayer got killed before her successor was mature enough to get to work. (Which most of them probably would, but at least it would cut the number of Slayer-less years down to ten out of twenty or maybe as far as five out of twenty.) And, unrelated to the once-per-generation issue, there's also the problem of one-Slayer-for-the-whole-world, which seems to be implied. (No one's said anything about one-per-continent or anything.) Again, does every place but Sunnydale have to manage on its own if vampires show up? We can get around these problems a little by speculating that, rather than being something that just *happens* at a regular interval, the appearance of a Slayer is a special event triggered by a buildup of evil supernatural forces -- kind of a supernatural immune-system response to a disease organism. The Slayer appears, whacks a bunch of the bad guys, and restores a healthier balance to the world's supernatural sphere. Eventually she dies, but by then she's done her job of thinning out the ranks of the nasties so they don't overrun everything. As time passes, more supernatural evil builds up and the birth of another Slayer is triggered. Slayers are a kind of supernatural antibodies, drawn to the site of an infection of evil such as the Master and his gang. (Can you tell that my degrees are in biology? ;) By this theory, then, it doesn't matter *which* nasties Buffy takes down, as long as she takes down a sufficient number of them to keep them from reaching some kind of a critical mass of supernatural evil. And just because I'm enjoying myself here, if there are a lot of different supernatural evil forces (vampires, demons, etc. and so forth), there should be some other manifestations of the more beneficial supernatural forces. It'd be fun to see Buffy run into Brownies, for example. (Not the little-girl type Brownies -- the Celtic ones who'd clean your house for you if you left them a bowl of milk and some bread.) I saw it too, but it didn't look so much like Moloch as your fairly typical medieval goat-horned devil. Moloch looked like a Narn with ram's horns and that picture didn't really. Dunno what such a creepy picture was doing in what looked like the dressing room for the school's stage, though. >Buffy and the Locker >2 to the left, 3 to the right *SLAM!* Great way to get into a locker >:D Though she was way lucky Snyder didn't notice the damage to the locker! Perhaps she was spooked because the thing followed her *home* and attacked her there. I don't recall that we've ever seen Buffy attacked at home up to this point. Having Armin on >the show might actually draw in new viewers, STrek fans, DS9 fans, >etc. I'm a bit confused as to why Giles got a wierded out look when >he saw Snyder. I suspect you don't have anything to worry about with regard to Quark dying. I don't know for sure, but I think the rumors are because of this week's DS9 promo, which does the usual "One Of Them Must Die!" deals which will almost certainly turn out to be a false alarm since there hasn't been any word of anyone leaving the show. Also, the four characters who seem to be in danger are, I think, Sisko, Kira, Odo, and O'Brien. (Might be wrong there.) In any case, there's no sign of Quark at all in the preview, and since the story has to do with a mission the Defiant gets sent on, I can't think what Quark would be doing on the Defiant. Quark usually gets so few lines in the show that if Armin wants to keep doing occasional episodes of Buffy he can probably manage to schedule around DS9. Oh, and I suspect Giles was freaked because Snyder enjoys freaking people out and had already gotten to Giles. (Remember Giles referred to him as "the Fuhrer".) And Snyder's the one who pressured Giles into doing the talent show. Not everyone who's creepy is a demon or vampire, even on Buffy ;) - -- Maytree Keeper of nothing of no one's, since she has way too much junk as it is. - --------------------------------------------------------------- Jennifer Hawthorne jen@rio.com jennifer.hawthorne@sierra.com - --------------------------------------------------------------- Did you hear about the violist who bragged that he could play 32nd notes? Sorry, I just don't see that. Buffy may have once been concerned only about clothes, but she was never cruel, and Cordelia is vicious on a regular basis. Besides, Cordelia is no more an example of a "normal" teenager than Buffy is. I went to a public high school in the Midwest which was Beyond Boring, and while there were some social butterflies like Cordelia around, they sure weren't normal. They were at the other end of the bell curve from the social outcasts and just about as common. No more than a couple Cordelias per class out of an average class size of roughly 200. The genuinely normal kids at Sunnydale High are the ones who wind up as monster fodder, like poor Morgan and Emily. >Every good hero needs an opposite to maintain a contrast; i think Cordelia >provides that. What, by showing up for thirty seconds and singing badly? I don't get it. Cordelia is far closer to being an anti-Willow than an anti-Buffy. Aside from unintentionally directing Buffy toward Willow in the pilot, what has Cordelia actually *done* in any episode? Even if she's supposed to be an example of the anti-Buffy (which I don't buy) she needs to have a dramatic purpose -- or she's just moving furniture. A waste of film. Another example: in the episode with Owen, Cordelia appears in order to be jealous of Buffy with Owen. How is Cordelia's jealousy relevant to anything? What would change in the plot if Cordelia wasn't there? Not a thing. Still another example: Cordelia spreads nasty rumors about Buffy. But Buffy doesn't seem to care (beyond a little angsting in the pilot, which she got over pretty quick), and why should she? The opinions of her classmates aren't a very big deal when she's got vampires and demons trying to kill her on a regular basis. And she's got a terrific group of friends in Xander, Willow, and Giles, and that's all you really need in high school -- a group of your own to hang with. Her other classmates' view of her as odd has so far not affected the plot of even a single show, as far as I can remember. Besides, this is a school where students and teachers both die gruesomely every week, so why would the other students necessarily consider Buffy especially weird? - -- Maytree - --------------------------------------------------------------- Jennifer Hawthorne jen@rio.com jennifer.hawthorne@sierra.com - --------------------------------------------------------------- Why do people tremble with fear when someone comes into a bank carrying a violin case? I guess that you would be the best person to ask this question: How many different pairs of boots has Buffy worn? I haven't paid close attention, but I know she has at least black boots and white boots. This is solely a call of local stations. Some (such as WGN, [example snipped] Hi Kevin, nice to see you here! Perhaps the shows you mentioned do well in your local market? When filling a time slot, wouldn't the station choose a show that does well locally? I don't imagine they have a lot of choices, but when they do, I'd assume they would put on a show that that is going to draw the most people. Or maybe they would choose a show that would hook channel surfers. I think that BtVS is a good show for that; you don't necessarily have to see the beginning to enjoy the climax and ending.
