Okay. Someone expressed an interest in Buffy merchandise, so I automatically thought of ArtVision. Let's think real positive here and assume Buffy is going to be on for at least two more years. If the years of the show are allowed to align with the years of Buffy's life, she (and Willow and Xander and perhaps Cordelia) are all going to graduate from High School. So, what do we think will happen then? What *should* happen then? Me, I think I'd like to see them all graduate and go to Sunnydale College together -- this keeps them on the Hellmouth. Giles can take a position as librarian at the College. Alternatively, they could manage to close the Hellmouth under Sunnydale, and then all go off to college elsewhere, and have the Hellmouth open up *there* (or some other supernatural threat of similar size.) However, since this show is about the horrors of High School as much as it is about the Horrors of the Hellmouth, will Joss & Co. *want* to move on to doing the Horrors of Higher Education instead? If not, what will he do -- just ignore the passage of time? I could see Buffy getting held back a year (horrors!) and maybe Xander, but not Willow. And if they *don't* allow time to pass, the increasing age of the "teenagers" in the cast (who are already in their twenties) is going to get more and more difficult to disguise. But the idolization I sometimes read (from I presume the younger viewers) almost makes me cringe. Buffy is played by a real person, and one who has packed a lot into her 20 years. Including a couple of things that got her a little bad publicity. :) I wouldn't want anyone to get the attitude of "Well, Sarah did it, so it's o.k." And besides, judging from Scott Woodard's post, I think it's apparent that officials at Warner Bros. are watching and would love to see Sarah win. Not that they are (officially) condoning ballot stuffing, but they'd love the free publicity. Thanks Lawless, That's exactly what I've been trying to do on my site for about a month. I have a "Biographies & Interviews" page. It isn't very big, though. The problem is that more publications than you think get really snotty about reproducing BtVS articles, even if you aren't doing it for profit. Just my opinion, but I think most of them feel that their BtVS article will get the fans to buy their publication. Then the fans will see other things in there that they like, and become subscribers. I have a few ways to get around some of that, but depending on the outcome of the Ticketmaster vs. Microsoft suit, that may change. And, as the listmoms pointed out last week, even if you think the publishers are being stupid (in regards to reproduction on fan sites), it is their stuff to be stupid with. In the end, Adrian Paul edged Lucy Lawless in terms of counted votes. What did People write about it? The fans of both shows were described in a rather unfavorable light (a bunch of geeks with nothing better to do than stuff the box) and rather than getting favorable publicity for the shows involved, they were portrayed as on the margin with obsessive fans. No thanks, I don't want to see that happen again. If TV Guide was really interested in an accurate count, they could limit the number of votes from a given address. As it is, they're literally asking for people voting a lot of times, and if the poll does end up with results they don't expect (say a SMG victory instead of Gillian Anderson), I wouldn't be surprised if the end result was some sort of article similar to the "internet geeks" one that People published. Buffy on table, knife comes down near her head (?) >i can't think of any other episode with a knife near buffy's head other >than Puppet Show when she was trapped under the chandelier thing. There was also that time in Invisble Girl when Buffy had broke into Marcie's secret layer. When Buffy was looking at the yearbook, Marcie had a knife by her head. But then she rethought it and drew back. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 1997 18:56:48 -0700 From: Mark Safransky Subject: BUFFY: Vampire in the Philipines Hey Buffy Fans, Just saw a news story about a Vampire that is terrorizing a village in the Pampanga (spelling?) Province about two hours north of Manila. The villagers are going about armed with wooden spears, garlic and salt and won't go out at night after many have reported seeing a man-like being flying through the air at night. Maybe this summer Buffy's Mom should take a field trip to the Philipines to collect some artifacts and Buffy can go with her to do some slaying! Seriously though, has anyone else seen this story on the news? It aired in the Washington DC area on cable News Channel 8 at about 6:45 PM EDT Saturday evening. It wasn't clear to me what kind of gas it was, but judging from Gile reaction, I guess that he thought it was natural gas. The gas didn't seem to have the properties of natural gas, but I don't know why else Giles would have assumed that it was inflammable. Buffy had the crossbow...the arrows were tipped with metal (makes it easier to go thru to the heart I guess) the shaft of the arrow was wood... so it killed Darla, it might work, I hope Buffy never has to put it to the test. I believe it is not only the material used (wood) but the amount. A toothpick might not kill a vampire since there is not enough substance to it. Perhaps the wood is toxic and staking a vampire through the heart spreads the toxin through the bloodstream. Paper and cardboard are low in wood content, and so in theory, wood (ha) not be enough to terminate the vampire. I always thought that there wasn't a purely physical reason that stakes through the heart killed vamps. I thought it was sort of super-natural/meta-physical reason, that simply a stake through the heart killed them. If there was a vampire toxin in the wood, you'd think that the Slayer crew would create some concoction they could drink to keep the toxin in their blood, and keep the vamps away.
