I've done some research on Philippine vampires and they're pretty wild. Anyone who's read the old AD&D _Fiend Folio_ has seen the Penaggalan. That's taken from actual folklore. Monsters of the Philippines, or asuang, come in a lot of varieties. Vampires can often detach a part of their bodies and leave them behind as they fly around looking for victims. Sometimes they suck blood through a tube-like tongue; some of them eat yuckier things like phlegm. A person can become a vampire by swallowing a chick whole, and stop being a vampire by regurgitating the chick (which remains alive in the stomach). How do you kill these vampires? Pour ash or salt on the part of the body which was left behind (could be just the legs, the lower half of the body or everything from the neck down ). The creature will not be able to reattach itself and will die in the separated state when morning comes. It would be fun if Buffy had to kill some non-standard vampires like these. All the rules would change and she'd have to change her tactics. - --diane ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 1997 12:30:54 -0400 (EDT) From: Weepyfool@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: Buffy: Punks in school In a message dated 97-05-20 07:51:23 EDT, Elaine wrote: << I agree, but I have noticed that Buffy has been already trying to send out messages such as: -- take responsibility -- be true to yourself -- face your fears -- true friends are all you need -- teamwork is a good thing -- appearances can be deceiving -- everyone has their own strength/niche Need I go on?? Well, it all depends on the specific vampire lore being used and what the writers want. In most lore that I've read, it needs to be a WOODEN stake - the vampire would recover from anything else, even when impaled through the heart. In Forever Knight, wasn't there an episode in which LaCroix had been impaled through the heart with a metal bayonet, and he lived, but was in great pain - and had to make a deal with Nick to help him remove it? In reference to your beheading theory - some lore does require beheading, and also stuffing garlic in the vampire's mouth after you behead it. So it all varies. But the wooden stake seems to be fairly standard . Anyone else? In the Anne Rice's books, Lestat turns Louis into a vampire by draining his blood and then allowing Louis to drink from his veins. Lestat is weak for a while, but then seems to regenerate with the passage of time and feasting. However I think you are on the right track with regard to a supernatural reason. Maybe it has to do with the purity of nature and life associated with something organic like wood. Since vampires are creatures of the undead, such purity is the key to their undoing. The heart is the most crucial organ for a vampire since it is essential to pump needed sustenance throughout the undead body. So stabbing lungs and other nonessential organs would hardly slow a vampire down, stabbing an organ like the brain would be more damaging, but with the heart intact, the vampire could recover. That's why you have to stake the heart, once staked the vampire cannot regenerate and then quickly dies. What do you guys think? Surge P.S. Though in the litreture vampires will not heal quickly from wood wounds while recovering very quickly from metal woundings if bothered by them at all. We know Buffyverse vampires can be harmed by metal, Angel was gashed across the ribs by the Three and had to be bandaged. Darla also shot him with metal bullets and mentioned that while he wouldn't die from them, they hurt like the dickens. So, Buffyverse vampires can be hurt but not killed by metal. It takes wood, but as Darla said, in the heart is the only way to kill them. Interesting side note, since Buffyverse vampires disintegrate into dust when killed, the old story about having to decapitate them would only apply to people who had been drained by a vampire and would rise again. I've recently seen a lot of discussion about why wood is necessary when staking a vampire, so I thought I'd throw in my (limited) knowledge -- forgive me if this has already been said. As I learned from watching TLC's special on vampires -- and all of you FKers probably remember this, too -- originally, the idea of the stake was _not_ to pierce the vampire's heart, but to physically pin the vampire to the ground, so it would be unable to get up and move about. Part of the myth stipulated that the stake needed to be of a special kind of wood that grew in the vampire's homeland. As for the "death by cymbal" featured in BTVS, an _alternate_ method of destroying vampires was said to be decapitation -- but it had to come from a single blow that completely severed the head, else the vampire might regenerate. As time went on the legends were altered/simplified for popular consumption, so that now in most moden vampire stories, a wooden stake through the heart, or any kind of decapitation (single blow or not) will do the trick. Of course, YMMV, depending on the story. Well, that's what they said on TLC, anyway. See, I paid attention to more than the FK clips :-). As soon a a >show is gettin successful, for some reason I don't really comprehend, >everyone starts wondering, well, how will it end? I wasn't exactly speculating about how the show would "end" -- I don't actually see it having a big blow-out spectacular ending. Clearly Buffy's situation isn't a one-time thing -- Vampires and Slayers have been going at each other for centuries, so there's no reason to think Buffy's career is going to be somehow unusual. It's just that any show which has young stars, particular young stars whose characters are in fairly predictable life situations such as high school, is going to have to take the passage of time into account or risk looking rather silly and spoiling the suspension of disbelief. It applies a little to older characters in predictable situations as well -- witness all the discussion of Riker's failure to get a command of his own after umpteen years as a first officer on the Enterprise in ST:TNG. (Though TPTB managed to get a couple of good stories out of that fact once they acknowledged it as something pretty odd.) In general I think speculation about "How will it all end?" comes about if the show's main hook is a single issue: "When will Nick find a way to break his curse?" "When will the Sliders get home?" "When/How will Voyager get back to Federation Space?" "When will the Gathering take place and who will win?" But if a show isn't built along those lines, the speculation about the "end" is almost non-existant. For example, in Deep Space Nine there's no single issue, so no one speculates about how DS9 will "end." It probably won't "end" -- it will just stop. Well, the writers could *choose* to end it by blowing up the station, but there's nothing in the story pushing them to do so. They could leave the station happily rotating for a century and no one would complain. > This happened a lot with the X-Files, and we all knew that >Mulder would eventually find Samantha, but how to wrap up the loose ends >that come with that? Heh. *DID* we know that? Do we know that yet? There's still no sign that Mulder is going to find the "real" Samantha. >Time needs to pass. I really would like to see what happens during >Buffy's Senior Prom (g) And the statement made as to their young looks >not getting any younger is very true. Yep. Even if they are willing to throw the time scale out the window and keep everyone in high school as long as necessary, Sarah, Alyson, and Nicholas are going to look pretty odd playing teenagers as they approach thirty...(Witness Stan Kirsch on Highlander -- same problem.) >Do you suppose that next >season will begin at the start of the next school year in Buffyland? >Miss Popularity was commenting last episode that the end of the school >year was quickly approaching...just a thought.. And if they *do* start with the new school year, does that mean we're supposed to assume nothing bizarre happened over the summer? That'd be a nice breather for Buffy and the Slayerettes but kind of hard to justify. Of course, if Buffy nails the Master in "Prophecy Girl" a quiet summer could be explained by her having taken out the main focus of evil and the evil forces needing a few months to regroup and restore themselves. Or are we going to get stuck hearing offhand remarks about Buffy's slaying efforts that took place in the summer but not getting to see them? ("Hey, remember that two-headed vampire I staked on the roof of the mall while watching the Fourth of July fireworks?") In any case, if the summer has passed Buffy should then have three months more training under her belt for the fall, unless her Mom sent her overseas for the summer or some such. Wonder how she and Giles would explain their continued get-togethers even when school is out? (Ooh, there's a nasty plot idea...suppose someone starts spreading the rumor that Giles and Buffy *are* involved in a relationship? Although i find it pecular that each watcher does not have an apprectice helping just in case he/she dies. Or could Calander be a watcher apprentice and Giles is not aware of it.I would assume Giles has a boss and the watchers are part of an organization. The org could have sent Calander without Giles being told the full story. It also protects the apprentice if their boss has no knowledge of their existance. That way if Giles is ever kidnapped he won't say under torture that Calander is a watcher apprentice.
