I just recently joined the list and I really enjoy reading everyones comments and theories. I would appreciate your comments on the following questions. 1) Are there vampires all over the world, or just were the Slayer resides? 2) Does destiny/prophecy have the Slayer moving from place to place every time a crop of vampires arise. 3) If Buffy is the Slayer of her generation, how long before another Slayer arrives? In WttHM, the Master tells the vampires that it's been a long time since they faced a Slayer. 4) And is there a different Watcher for each Slayer? I know that it's the job of the Watcher to keep a diary. However, think I would be interesting for Buffy to find a diary of a previous Slayer. What do you think? THE ARCHANGEL KEEPER OF XANDER'S TENNIS BALL OF UNFULFILLED TEEN LOVE ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jun 1997 10:31:06 -0400 (EDT) From: WiliQueen@aol.com Subject: BUFFY: Monk/Knockoffs/Angel's Soul/Master's Skeleton Topic 1: Lady Elendil puts forth a couple theories about what happened to the monk who was emailing Ms. Calendar (or, more precisely, sending out *global* mailings, presumably to anyone who might be able to help), and I'd like to add another: he could have been grabbed/killed by humans sympathetic to the demon cause (this veers us a little more in the Lovecraftian direction that BtVS' "First Ones" mythos resembles) or been the victim of any of a number of other supernatural mishaps. Remember that all hell was breaking loose, quite literally; the Master was only the eye of the storm. As for whether all the vampires were headed for the Hellmouth and what happened to them: I would agree with Lady E that there are vampires elsewhere in the world; I think this particular colony was currently the most active, which is why fate brought the Slayer there. Vampires elsewhere may have felt the pull, but wouldn't have arrived there yet. But I've also been reading a number of posts opining that all the vamps invading the school died or otherwise went *poof* at the Master's death, and I have to admit to being puzzled by that. Cordelia just said they were "gone"; I assumed that the Hellmouth closed, cutting off the force drawing them to that location, and they got the heck out of Dodge before what happened to the Master could happen to them! The theory that they died seems a little more possible in light of the speculation on different types of vampires that's been going on based on the zombie-like behavior of the mob minions (in that case, I could see how their existence could be dependent on the Master's). My own take on that is they're simply new vampires who've been given a minimum of information (if any) and sent out to fend for themselves; "only the strong survive" does seem to be a basic vampire tenet. I expect it takes time (and a high level of starting intelligence) to become one of the sophisticated vampires like Darla. The one baby-vamp exception we've seen is Jesse; he was made a vampire specifically to serve as bait for Buffy, and presumably they took the time to give him more guidance than "you know what you need, go out and get it." I guess the main reason I lean away from both theories (different kinds of vampire/the minions died in PG) is that Joss has been really good about clearly explaining what BtVS vampire mythos is, and I can't see him tossing elements like that at us without clarifying them in the dialogue. But as always, the speculative discussion is fun! Topic 2: Lisa Rose, cheesy knockoffs are *inevitable*. Look at it this way: copies are never up to the quality of the original; but when the original is as brilliant as BtVS, there's room for two or three of the copies to be watchable. :-) And may make room for something truly new to get a slot that might not have otherwise--remember that BtVS was pitched as "Clueless meets The X-Files" (yeah, sounds dumb to me too, but the ends justify the means, especially when dealing with network suits). Without XF's track record, they might not have taken the chance on buying BtVS. Who knows what Buffy could be paving the way for? Topic 3: Jodie LaKing makes good clarifying points regarding the status of Angel's soul (re: the "I'll be damned" comment in "The Harvest"). I'm going to be a pain and toss in another level of complexity: by whatever rules he is being judged, is he alive or dead? By BtVS mythos, he was booted from his body by the demon when Darla made him a vampire; by the reckoning of the Catholic Church for sure (and most other religions I know much about) he died at that moment, so the tally on his soul *should* only be measured up to that moment. In Catholic doctrine, whatever sins he committed *before* he died could be redeemed after death (it used to be in Purgatory, but I think the Vatican altered that at some point. I'm fuzzy on where they say you go now if you're not quite up to Heaven standards; been a pagan too long...), but it's orders of magnitude harder. Under normal circumstances, the departed obviously can't take action on his own behalf, and must depend upon the prayers (thousands and thousands of them; I think there used to be actual ratios of prayers or Masses to days in Purgatory) offered for him by the living. In Angel's case, if we hypothesize that he was Irish Catholic, there probably would have been *oodles* of prayers and as many Masses as his family could afford...if he (as a vampire) hadn't munched them all. But after the curse, with his soul returned to his body (I wonder, does he remember being anywhere in the interim, or did the vampire's memories physically coded in his brain take over?), he's in a unique position for a dead person: he *can* do works in the world. Does this mean his tally went back to "alive" status at that point, or does the final tally stand as something to be balanced--a fixed price tag on redemption, so to speak? Okay, that rambled a *lot* further than I intended it to. The point is, I don't think the actions of the vampire (from the time he was made to the Romany curse) are on his soul. And I think he probably knows that intellectually, but it certainly must *feel* that way to him when he remembers them as if he willingly did them. What is that if not damnation on earth? His task, then, is to grow beyond it and rise above it, something I think he's slowly figuring out how to do. It'll be a long process, and I look forward to watching it. Topic 4: Hate to break it to you, Archangel, but there's no *way* Joss has missed the classic regeneration you described. :-) It happens *all* the time--notably in Hammer's umpteen Dracula flicks--from the flimsiest of vampire remains with but a drop of mortal blood. Usually it bugs me to see the device used YET AGAIN, but I would forgive if it happened in BtVS because (a) part of the show's core is homage to classic horror, (b) it's not out of proportion to level of full-blown supernatural activity in the Buffy universe in general (some writers try to do it in more "realistic" settings, with disastrously absurd results), and (c) the Master is a cool bad guy and I wouldn't mind having him back. :-) Whew. Okay. That's me for today. :-) Later! Valerie * WiliQueen@aol.com Slayerette * NatPack * BBPG * Broadway Baby * etc... I'm a soprano. His worldwide posts spoke of the end of the world but what if he knew more, especially concerning Vampires roles in said event. Killed by Vampires, Killed by evil Humans, Ran to hide from the impending doom. Sure. Great. But unless Joss was just throwing in this ambiguous "Monk" storyline just for gits & shiggles, don't you think it was meant for more. They sure referred to this guy a lot for us to find out next season that he died at the hands of evil. So what? It's a moot point by then. Can anyone say anti-climactic? I've been sending white :) Actually, I haven't. But if I were, they'd be white, and I'd send some to Alyson as well. Red roses are for weddings and funerals. white roses are symbolic of love and innocence to me. Survey: Ladies, which color do you hate or prefer? and why? email me privately, please. That was the shittiest interview I've ever seen, what a rip off (well maybe not since I didn't pay for anything). They used what, 7 or 8 questions? I asked over 200 questions and instead of using any of mine they go with things like , "who would win ion an armwrestling match, you or Xena?" That was a waste of a question when someone could have used that space to ask, "do you feel like the father/daughter scene in "Nightmares" was metaphorical to your own relationship with your father? And if so, how much of the onscreen emotion portrayed by you was induced by this situation and carries over into your current ideas of family values today?" And who asked about her being the hottest download on the internet when it's not even close to being true? Argghhh, in my opinion, if she can answer the question in one sentence, it's not a question. A question is one that takes her 10 minutes to figure out an answer for and requires the assistance of a public relations advisor and an attorney. - -Lawless (before responding to this post, make sure you take into consideration the small amount of sarcasm that underlies the majority of it). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jun 1997 17:17:57 -0500 From: Sharon Subject: BUFFY: Digest update Many of you have been experiencing problems with your digests, nost noteably that they are being cut off. You bring up some good questions: >1) Are there vampires all over the world, or just were the Slayer >resides? I've thought about this a lot, and it kinda bugs me. We've heard discussions amongst the vamps about experiences in other parts of the world ("1843. Madrid. He caught me sleeping." - Luke) and so must assume that they are indeed a plague upon our planet. Given this, do they not have free reign to feast at will in places other than Sunnydale, CA? Perhaps a Slayer's ability to quell an uprising in one part of the world is a way to keep the worst occurances in check. >2) Does destiny/prophecy have the Slayer moving from place to place >every time a crop of vampires arise. As noted above, perhaps each new Slayer is called to the one location that needs her the most. >3) If Buffy is the Slayer of her generation, how long before another >Slayer arrives? In WttHM, the Master tells the vampires that it's been a >long time since they faced a Slayer. "I know the drill. One Slayer dies, next one's called" - Buffy Or so it goes. We've discussed the possibility of there being Slayers in waiting, so to speak, or perhaps the next in line hasn't been born yet. If a Slayer dies and the next one is just being born, it would give the vamps time to feed at will or regroup from their battles with the recently departed Slayer. Or......if the Slayer before Buffy was in, say, Australia, then the group of vamps terrorizing Sunnydale would have been free from her retribution. Could be a combination of these scenarios too I suppose. >4) And is there a different Watcher for each Slayer? >I know that it's the job of the Watcher to keep a diary. However, >think I would be interesting for Buffy to find a diary of a previous Slayer. >What do you think? Yes, it appears that there is a different Watcher for each Slayer, although in Prophecy Girl, when Buffy is confronted with the possibility of dying that night, she asks Giles if he will train the next Slayer or if they will send for someone else. Does this mean that in some cases a Watcher can assist more than one Slayer, or was Buffy a bit confused given her mental state at the time: "Giles, I'm 16 years old. I....I don't want to die." - Buffy Wow, wouldn't the diary of a past Slayer offer some really useful tips to our beautiful heroine? Oh gee, think it has any "hunk" references in it?
