It lets me check up on these things without waiting for another rerun. Giles never said "summer solstice", nor did anyone else. Here's a transcription of the relevant scenes. First, when fighting Buffy in the crypt, this is what Luke says: (Apparently quoting some prophecy): "And like a plague of boils the race of Man covered the Earth. But on the third day of the newest light will come the Harvest. And the blood of Men will flow as wine, when the Master will walk among them once more." (then in current vernacular): "The Earth will belong to the Old Ones and Hell itself will come to town. Amen!" Later, Angel says: "Tonight is the Harvest. Unless you can prevent it...the Master walks." Still later, Giles says: "Under the crescent moon, the first past the Solstice, it will come...that's tonight." Giles never specified *Summer* Solstice, and given what Luke said about "the newest light" it seems like the Winter or Spring Solstice would be the most likely interpretation. Winter Solstice is Dec. 21 and Spring Solstice is March 21. "Newest" might mean the turning of the year at the shortest day (Winter Solstice) or "Newest" in the sense of the "youngest" season (Spring.) Winter makes more mystical sense but the Spring date seems more likely since three days after Winter Solstice would be Christmas Eve. That also makes the May Queen reference make sense if it's the end of May and if events in Sunnydale are somewhat compressed compared to their airing time. (The first half-season aired over twelve weeks not counting reruns, while time passing in Sunnydale would be only eight weeks.) This whole sequence also adds fuel to the controversy about the accuracy of Prophecy. Luke's statement of the Harvest Prophecy quite clearly did *not* come true. In fact I can't see any way to make it "true" by means of careful interpretation. Also, Angel seems to feel that Prophecy is something that can definitely be subverted -- "Tonight is the Harvest. Unless you can prevent it." He doesn't seem to think it's *easy* to do, since he's very surprised that Buffy actually manages to pull it off, but he thinks it's possible. In other words, Giles, Angel, and Buffy shouldn't have panicked so easily in "Prophecy Girl," since they'd already seen that Prophecy could be defeated. - ------- On a different note, while hunting up the Solstice references I also checked out the "Vamp nail polish" scene. It was definitely "Vamp," not "Goth." - -- Maytree (Priestess of the Pause Button) - ------------------------------------------------------- Jennifer Hawthorne :: jen@pacwest.DIESPAM.net [To reply to this message, remove DIESPAM from address] - ------------------------------------------------------- Miles added it to his life's lessons list. And Angel as Brad doesn't work either; Brad's not a mental wizard himself, and far too naive for Angel. Most of the amusement value in this idea is picturing the characters with their Buffy personalities trying to portray their RHPS counterparts. I think Giles would just faint dead away if someone tried to get him into fishnets. (I'm talking about Giles, not ASH, of course.) >I think someone mentioned earlier that it would be a good idea to see the >Rocky Horror Picture Show if the discussion is confusing. It IS a great >idea if you are old enough. I'm not a mother (yet) but my concern over age wouldn't be a matter of the movie's content (it's suggestive, but we don't get to really *see* all that much, and it's all done for laughs) but rather that younger teenagers probably wouldn't enjoy it as much, particularly if they rented it to watch at home, than they would if they waited a few years and went to see it at a midnight show, complete with live actors, after a few beers, in the company of a bunch of rowdy college buddies all of whom have seen it before. Watching RHPS alone at home on TV without rice, toilet paper, squirt guns, and audience participation would totally ruin the experience. Kind of like watching a colorized "Casablanca," or seeing "Lawrence of Arabia" on a fuzzy black-and-white 9" TV. It loses a lot. Darla says, "For a *hundred* years you've not had a moment's peace because you will not accept who you are." We had "The Pack" on YTV tonight. Great ep except that the "dark, brooding one" was not present in the flesh, only in the conversation, and via his jacket. It brought to mind a couple of things. 1. I wonder how they explained the principal's demise to the media. 2. I teach in a high school and I am amazed by the lack of custodial staff at Sunnydale who should be noticing these students in the building after hours. Our custodians are always alert at night for people in the building who shouldn't be there. But her hair wasn't fine. And her dress WAS a little spotty. Besides, her dress was white. THe producers may have her wear those short little skirts, but they WON'T do that, I'm sure.
