It's considered either Exactly the point I was trying to make. BtVS is made in America, by Americans, and reflects American values. I do not expect Buffy to take her top off when they have a beach scene. I wouldn't mind if she did, but I completely understand that others would. What I meant by "this culture" was that Buffy/Giles is culturally wrong (like teenage drinking), not inherently wrong (like murder). An important difference many people (in general, not on this list) seem to miss. >especially as Buffy is not a legal adult. Buffy and Mr. Giles? That's disgusting. Why? Because Buffy isn't an adult. Heck, kids don't even graduate from high school until 18. But in cultures where they are out on their own and taking care of themselves _much_ earlier it's different. I would never make the mistake of saying that a 16 year old getting married in a culture where 14 year olds are out on their own is the same as Buffy getting married. Even in Romeo and Juliet, how old was Juliet? (14 as I remember.) We aren't going to call Shakespeare a leacherous pervert because he didn't make Juliet 21 are we? >It is also illegal in every state for a teacher to be sexually involved >with a student. There is no legal way for Giles and Buffy to be involved, >and the cultural mores also forbid this very strongly. Now that is simply not true. I can dig up numerous articles from at least one state showing that it is not illegal for a high school teacher to have sex with a student (who is at least 16). As Lawless pointed out, they'll certainly get run out of town, but it is not _illegal_. BtVS is set in California. It's very illegal there. That's what matters most. He (Mike at PaloBuffys@aol.com), is trying to hold the most consice poll among the fans on what name they think we should use as a whole. Now whether or not we all agree on the final choice is another matter entirely. To make it a fair vote and indicitive of the fans of the net, this poll is being posted to the following places: ash-gasp@eskimo.com buffy@xmission.com buffy-beta@eskimo.com buffy-l@planetx.com Buffy Postingboard at UltimateTV and I have forms set up on my GASPer Home Page and Buffy Links Page at: http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/7728/gaspers.html http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/7728/btvsurls.html Originally Mike wanted all votes in by July 26th, but I've convinced him to hold the voting process through the summer and part of the fall, and post the results on the day the new episode of next season airs, when ever that is. You can only vote ONCE! Mike and I keep track of all votes that come in and will delete any double votes. You can only CHOOSE one Name, if you choose more then one, the first one will be the one we count. That said, on to your choices!: 1. Slayerettes 2. Slayerytes 3. Buffamaniacs 4. Hairy Elbows(Alyson "Willow" Hannigan's Suggestion)" 5. Buffyatrics These come from various suggestions and seem to have gained the most support. Please send all votes to me PRIVATELY at gaspers@eskimo.com (if you can remember) or at whtrose@eskimo.com. If you have any comments on this send them to me as well PRIVATELY and I'll pass them on to Mike. Hi... I think this should be cleared up. Choice #4, "Hairy Elbows" was a sarcastic suggestion someone made on this list. It was not originally suggested by Alyson Hannigan. I picked up on it and said that I in fact liked "Hairy Elbows" and that if Alyson approved of it I would call myself a Hairy Elbow. Whether or not this Hairy Elbows fan name suggestion may reached her later, I don't know. It may have, she may have laughed and approved, I don't know. Someone who has been following the Bronze Postingboard, please confirm if Alyson Hannigan did say (seriously or jokingly) that "Hairy Elbows" was a fan name suggestion. Oh, and if you do talk to Alyson tell her that funee would love to be her Hairy Elbow! funee (: ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 12:03:26 +0100 From: angela4luv@juno.com (Angela Mach) Subject: Re: BUFFY: Comic Con Update! what's the web site? i don't know and wanna go there. The video starred Janet Jackson (who was DeBarge's wife at the time). It was a theme-song to an African American karate movie called something like THE LAST DRAGON. The movie starred Vanity. Oh-oh...I hope I didn't just start a conversation string with people asking "..who's Vanity???". Also, Sunnydale High loses about one to two students per week to some kind of weird murder. Normally, in this dangerous atmosphere, parents would be yanking their kids out of the school in a heartbeat. But the reason why BTVS is so funny, is that the small town takes a stereotypical small town response and merely chooses to repress the death and constant spookiness, opting to explain their problems away in neat simple fabricated stories. Joss' genius is giving Sunnydale an almost STEPFORD WIVES atmosphere. There are few things that are simultaneously scarier and pathetically comical than denial in the face of devastation. I think Principal Snyder sums up my point best as he admonishes Buffy, Xander and Willow during the talent show auditions : "There are things I will not tolerate: students loitering on campus after school, horrible murders with hearts being removed, and also smoking. ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #187 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
