I may be wrong, but I don't think Angel is a "watcher". It was revealed in "Angel" that he was made a vampire by Darla and was a ruthless killer for many years. He told Buffy that he killed his family, their friends, their children...that he offered a gruesome death to everyone he met - and that he did it "with a song in (his) heart". All of that changed when he fed on a beautiful young girl about Buffy's age from a Romany (gypsy) clan who was "dumb as a post". To avenge her death, her clan put a unique curse on him - they restored his soul and, apparently, with it came remorse for all his years of killing. The girl herself didn't give him back his soul - her family did. He now lives alone, avoiding the vampires he once went on rampages with. "You're living above ground...like one of them," Darla said to him in "Angel". "You and your new friend are attacking us...like one of them. Guess what, precious...you're NOT one of them." To prove her point, she rolled up the blind, making Angel cringe from the sunlight, and pointed out that he was still forced to live on blood. Giles is the Watcher, but Angel is, I guess, Buffy's unofficial other protector. In WWTHM, he told her where to find the vampires in the underground tunnel, but didn't go with her. He also shows up occasionally at the Bronze to give her a "cryptic warning", as she calls them - this happened in "Teacher's Pet". When Buffy asked him why HE didn't stop the Harvest if he was so concerned about it, he said, "Because I'm afraid..." - a decidedly human emotion. I like Angel in his soft-spoken way - maybe he could be an assistant Watcher, like Xander and Willow are Slayerettes! Well, this is it from a first-time poster to the forum - I hope I've shed some light on our Angelus and that I haven't been too long-winded. Angel is not a watcher. Angel is a vampire who killed a gypsy girl. He also killed his parents, but that is much earlier. Anyway, the Romani tribe cursed him since he killed their favorite girl: they gave him back his soul. She had nothing to do with it, since she was dead. So now, he is still a vampire, but he feels guilt for killing since he has his sould back. He however is NOT a watcher; I didn't catch any references to slayers that he has helped before Buffy, but I can't swear that he has never done so, since I may just have missed it. The only way that I see Buffy's mom learning the secret is that she sees Buffy taking on an entire group of vampires over the course of an evening. Yet even if Mrs. Summers witnesses Buffy's prowess, I cannot imagine that she would be happy about Buffy's avocation, even if she was proud of Buffy's accomplishments. Buffy's father might react differently. I wonder how parents during major, earthshaking conflicts handled their children's dangerous but vital activities? Many teenagers took part in the civil rights movement here in the United States; some died. I know some people in my parents' generation that were in the Resistance as teenagers during World War II. Did they tell their parents? Were they proud? Fearful? Encouraging? Forbid them to get involved? Did they wear thick blinders so that they could cope? Another analogy might be for teenagers who today volunteer for fire fighting or life guarding. Both activities can be very dangerous--even deadly. Sports and activities like mountain climbing, SCUBA, skiing, horse riding, diving, hang gliding and piloting planes are legal at 16--and can be fatal. For the parents on the list--how would you handle these as well? At least Buffy has some supernatural powers and training to make slaying a little safer. Kathryn PS In my family, my father always encouraged me in risky sports and travels, my mother always worried and tried to stop me. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 16:58:48 -0500 (CDT) From: "Grace M. I thought that it made some very relevant points about how feminism exists in the 90s. The author may very well have a "thing" for Emma Peel, but I would posit that Peel of the AVENGERS is someone who has greatly influenced the potential of female characters in television. I am, unfortunately, too young to have seen the AVENGERS, but every strong woman character on TV today has been compared to Emma Peel in the past few years. From Scully to Xena -- all these women have kicked a** and kept their feminine composure. They are all complex characters who refuse to be pigeon-holed into little boxes. Although I love Buffy, I'd have to say that she is one of the least complex or angst-ridden characters. But I think that a lot of this has to do with the "fun" nature of the show. I was impressed when I saw "Nightmares" which allowed SMG to build on that part of her character which gives her complexity. glee - ------ I laugh in the face of danger! ...And then I hide until it goes away. - Xander Harris from "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 15:16:01 -0700 From: Allan Alexander Subject: Re: BUFFY: Buffy's secret: Let's share Lawless wrote: > > I was watching "The Witch" when Buffy's mom is going on about her > problems and I just wanted to slap her for yelling at Buffy for getting > into trouble when she's actually trying to save the world. One of the best treatments I've seen of this kind of dilemma was in Diane Duane's _Deep Wizardry_. The heroine is a 13-year-old wizard, newly come into her powers. (This takes place in our modern world.) When her parents catch her in an awkward situation, she decides to tell them the truth. They think she's crazy, until she demonstrates her magic to them. Then they alternate between being proud of her and wanting to keep her safe. "Let someone else save the world." I think Buffy's mom would be similar. If forced to believe this wild story, she would want to keep her little girl safe from harm. "Let someone else kill the monsters. You've done your part -- they can get a replacement now." Any loving mother wants to protect her child. Buffy herself, before "Prophecy Girl", was not really ready to accept that being the Slayer might mean giving her life for the safety of others. Four lines, if you don't count the attribution! OK, I'm on digest, so six people may already have responded to this, but... Buffy's a minor. All it takes for Mom to commit her is Mom to get her there and sign the papers. Assuming she can find a cooperative mental hospital, it could probably be done in an afternoon. Unlike an adult, Buffy *can* be forced into treatment without having to prove she's a danger to herself or society. Because she's still, legally, her mother's "property" in the sense that Mom can decide what's best for her, where she lives, etc. Which, if we postulate a mental hospital full of, oh, zombies or something (can you say "mad scientist"?) could get *really* interesting! Anybody see the asylum episode of "She Wolf of London"? Like that! Part of what makes Buffy a tragic heroine is the show NEEDS for her to keep her dual indentity to herself. The problem of wanting to be a good daughter, but having to disobey her mother all the time gives the show much of it's dramatic tension. It hurts Buffy to have to lie to her mother all the time, but Buffy knows it's for her own protection. We've already seen what happens when a vampire learns how to hit her right where she lives; Darla could have done much more damage if she so desired. There are already too many people who know what she is, knowledge which endangers their very lives. Remember, Giles signed up for life as a Watcher (though he's done quite a bit more than watching lately, I wonder if that could get him in trouble with TPTB in Watcher society), Willow and Xander did not and it could end up costing them dearly. If you're interested, the s*bscription process is similar to the process you follow when s*bscribing to the Buffy discussion list. One last suggestion before getting to the instructions-- if you have a story or a poem to post, you'll probably want to wait two or three days so that people have time to get s*bscribed. And so that we have time to s*bscribe them. :) Wherever you see a *, replace it with the letter "u" (no quotes). Xmission bounces messages that have administrative commands in them, so we have to mask the words. TO S*BSCRIBE TO THE BUFFY FICTION MAILING LIST: There is a digest option, although the volume on the fic list probably won't be as heavy. At least not yet... REGULAR FIC MAILING LIST S*BSCRIPTION: Send an e-mail message to majordomo@xmission.com The subject doesn't matter. The text should say: s*bscribe buffyfic Don't capitalize "Buffy" in the message. You only need to include your e-mail address in the body of the message if you want your list mail going to a address than the address you're sending the s*bscription request from. You'll get a confirmation message back pretty quickly. If you don't send the message back exactly as requested, you will NOT be s*bscribed. Once you've sent back the confirmation message, you'll get a message saying that the listowners must approve your s*bscription. This may cause a slight delay in s*bscribing, but we're going to approve requests as quickly (and as often) as possible. Once the server has received our approval and you're subbed to the list, you'll receive a "welcome" message with new s*bscriber information and list rules. Please read this and save for future use. DIGEST FIC MAILING LIST S*BSCRIPTION: Exactly the same as s*bscribing to the regular mailing list, except put the following in your e-mail to the majordomo: s*bscribe buffyfic-digest TO SEND MAIL TO THE BUFFY FIC MAILING LIST: If you're subbed to either list, simply send the mail you want to be distributed to: buffyfic@xmission.com Mail to this address will automatically picked up and redistributed to everyone on record as a s*bscriber to both of the Buffy lists. TO UNS*BSCRIBE TO THE BUFFY FIC LIST: Send an e-mail message to majordomo@xmission.com The subject doesn't matter. The text should say: uns*bscribe buffyfic If you're unsubbing from the digest list, the text would say: uns*bscribe buffyfic-digest PLEASE NOTE: send s*bscribe/uns*bscribe/digest messages to the list address (buffyfic@xmission.com)! You need to send them to the list which is the "brain" of the list. The list server is majordomo@xmission.com. Questions or problems? Contact either one of us offlist.
