Hi, everyone! I'm new! Although I was expecting to dip my toes in with a few short, telling comments here and there, I'm afraid I've found my very first message devolving into an outright essay, and we have Chris2 to thank for it. In his discussion of Buffy's ability to sense vampires, Chris2 wrote: >In which Giles tells Buffy that she must "hone" (I think that's the word) in on the >vampire in order to sense it. This is an interesting question which, believe it or not, actually tells us something about how long Giles must have been in America. Technically, the idiom is supposed to be "HOME in on," because "hone" means "sharpen" (sharpen in?), while "home" as a verb means to intend to go somewhere (as in homing pigeons). But you're right--Giles says "hone." Now if we look at the Webster's Dictionary of English Usage (1989), under the article for "hone in on," it says: "An issue looming on the usage horizon is the propriety of the phrase 'hone in on.'...[which is clearly a confused variant of 'home in on']...We did not encounter 'hone in on' until George Bush used it in [his] 1980 [presidential campaign]. But we did record two instances of 'hone in' in the '60s [one of which was]: ...Wallace has been able to 'hone in some basic issues...' Bush said." So not only does the popularity of 'hone in on" as a variant for 'home in on' seem to be related in part to George Bush's public life legitimizing the phrase (my opinion), but its usage has been growing ever since 1980, to the point where I now hear 'home in on' far less frequently than its bastard cousin. The ObBuffy conclusion I draw from this is that Giles has been in America (or at least a follower of American politics) since 1980 or thereabouts. If it had been longer, he wouldn't have picked up the new idiom (since I picture him being an "according to Fowler" kind of guy who would sneer at a nonce usage), and if it had been only a few years, I don't see why he would have changed his speech patterns, since in Britain they presumably still say "home," since over there George Bush hasn't been warping people's speech by example. But if Giles moved here in 1980 or so, the usage would have been all around him, and he might not know that Americans had ever said anything else, and after 17 years of attrition, he would have joined America in its new usage, in the same way that I assume he now says "cookie" instead of "biscuit," just to avoid being misunderstood. A stretch, yes, but what else can we fans do? Until it's actually established how long Giles has been here, I'm going with 1980. (Um, it HASN'T been established how long Giles has been here, has it? I'd hate to think there's a whole bunch of egg waiting to fly at my face...) I ask this because it struck me that Buffy is very much like a superhero character (fighting crimes, special powers, secret identity, down but never out, etc.), and Spider-Man is sort of the original quippy, wiseacre superhero, usually (if memory serves) balancing grave danger at the hands of ridiculous foes with a kind of deconstructive irony that makes pop culture references and points out the absurdity of even the worst situations. Any other Spidey or ex-Spidey fans care to back me up on this? I suspect Joss and I read a lot of the same issues, and the flavor seems very similar. (Note: I'm not saying Joss is uncreative or that Buffy is a knockoff of Marvel--I'm just trying to identify what sources Joss might have drawn on as models on the road to creating this quintessentially marvelous program.) Sure looked like 'em to me. Wonder where she found a priest willing to provide them? I mean, she could bail holy water out of a font in just about any Catholic church, but wafers *must* be blessed in a mass/eucharist to be the Body of Christ and thus have any "punch" to 'em.... Which means she most likely has a Catholic, Orthodox, or Episcopalian priest on her side, somewhere. Those are the denominations that most often use the traditional-type wafers, in my experience. The reason I surmise this is that according to the traditions I remember, you only need a holy wafer when you're staking a vampire in its coffin--to make sure it won't rise again, you have to fill its mouth with a communion wafer or two and then cut off its head. Has Buffy ever used even ONE holy wafer? I can't remember anything, and with such a paucity of use so far, I have a hard time believing she'd be carrying around as many as we see in the pilot for anything but long-term storage. Actually, you find practically nothing about the Christian concept of devils and demons in the Bible--even the idea of Lucifer's "fall" from heaven is taken from a traditional misreading of Isaiah, and there's never a direct connection made (in the Old Testament at least) between the serpent in the garden and the Lucifer we're familiar with today. As I recall it from my religious studies classes, the very idea of Satan didn't enter Jewish religious thought until after their Babylonian captivity (because the Babylonians had a concept of good-evil dichotomy)--before then, God was in charge of both good AND evil, which is why, before Job, you get confusing scenes like the one in First (or Second? it's been a while) Samuel where a presumably good God hardens Pharaoh's heart or sends an angel to torment King Saul. Which leads me to the additional question: what tradition ARE Joss's vampires from? The fact that Buffy carries around communion wafers seems particularly interesting here, because although the word "Christian tradition" has been mentioned before, not all Christians use communion wafers. (I myself have experienced a host--sorry!--of Protestant communion foods, from cubes of white bread to broken-up matzoh crackers.) So not only do vampires seem to be drawn out of the Christian community, they seem to be drawn from the *Non-Protestant* (or at least non-Baptist-and-evangelical) Christian community, which is whittling it down pretty thinly. For what it's worth, I like Mr. Weitzman's idea of the Lovecraftian Elder Gods concept, which seems sensible and fertile (they're just malevolent extradimensional beings, and don't require a belief in the magical salvific properties of blessed water). But I'd like to see the show do more with this, to clear up the ambiguity at the moment. Certainly it seems that religion (aside from the cross) is a very small facet of Buffy's weaponry against the vamps, so I don't see why we couldn't hope to see a Buddhist or Muslim or even atheist slayer in some future time. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 1997 22:33:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Cruciver@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: vamp names I don't think they'd need last names, since there aren't that many to begin with, so they'd still be able to tell each other apart by first name--particularly since vampires tend to have really strange names anyway (they still haven't used the names "John" or "David" even!). And thanks to Buffy, there seem to be fewer all the time. Personally, I like to think that they DO have last names, and every vampire's last name is "the Vampire." And I'm eagerly awaiting the appearance of Varney "the Vampire" the Vampire. One of the greatest things about Buffy is the way that every episode seems to play not only on the fear of monsters, but the everyday fears associated with high school. And these fears (stage fright in "Puppets," unpopularity in "Invisible Girl," causing your parents' divorce in "Nightmares") are a lot more resonant and painful than the otherworldly vampire stuff. The supernatural creatures are almost a relief by comparison--or at least a cathartic release. It may be an old topic, but I love it so much I think it bears mentioning again. The scripts are just wonderful.
