Did you see the look on Buffy's face when she came back to life? She was definately a changed slayer. And add to this the fact that she started fighting like never before.... I don't know... Oh, and Sarah mentioned in the TV Guide article that something was definately going to be different about Buffy BECAUSE of that death experience. I think that it has something to do with her next step as a slayer- that perhaps a taste of her own mortality has awakened something new in her. We know so little about what being the Slayer entails (we don't have a manual) Anyhow- my vote is that this will definately fascilitate some sort of change in Buffy's manner (maybe a temporary one)- and will somehow lead to her enhancing her skills. I did get the sense that her "resurrection" was part of the prophesy- and that it means a lot more than getting CPR and finishing the battle. I think it is rather a beginning of its own... miss hayse :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 15:39:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Morpheus04@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: BIG XANDER INFO SAD THOUGH have you heard anymore about this i like xander and i don't want him to be a bad guy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 12:58:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Sonja Marie Subject: BUFFY: ARTICLE: Buffy Stakes Her Future in Vampires Here's the article someone mentioned at: http://smash.mgz.com/tv/features/buffy.html Cast picture (sans David/Charisma) no mention of Tony :P Buffy Stakes Her Future in Vampires All You Have to Fear, Is Fear Herself by Valarie Thorpe Do you dare to enter the House of The Vampire? Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the sole break-out cult hit for WB last year, is launching into its sophomore year. Although not a big ratings competitor with the big four, it has garnered a very devout niche crowd. The mid-season premiere show debuted with a two-hour pilot March 10 and has grabbed an impressive media watch over its 12 episode run this summer. They received the holy grail coverage this week, with the cover of the TV Guide. Buffy, played by daytime Emmy award-winning Sarah Michelle Gellar, is based on the 1992 movie scripted by Joss Whedon. No newcomer to movie scripting, Whedon also wrote the script for the upcoming Alien Resurrection film and serves as executive producer for the Buffy TV series. Although the TV series is based on the film, there are distinct differences. Where the movie was campier in tone, the TV series is grittier. "I wanted to give the series a wider range and by making it a little more serious, I felt that would help open it up," Whedon said. Another element of the show that has helped entice the younger demographics is the music. Whedon said he likes to have some of the lesser known bands provide music for the episodes to give them a little exposure. If audience feedback is any indication, bands to watch out for are Sprung Monkey, Velvet Chain and Superfine. Whedon even has plans for a Buffy CD release. "I like hiring the unsigned bands because they're cheap," he said, laughing. "No, not really. A lot of great bands just don't get enough exposure." Sarah (Buffy) Gellar is a New York City native who had studied Tae Kwon Do for several years before the kickboxing Buffy character came into her life. Her Emmy-winning performance came with a stint on the daytime soap All My Children. Buffy takes the lead, but it truly is an ensemble cast with Nicholas Brendon as Xander Harris, one of Buffy's faithful sidekicks. He says playing a character going back to high school isn't all what it's cracked up to be, even on TV. "Sometimes I envy the ones who die," he said laughing. "Not really, it's a great role and the camaraderie between the cast makes it a great show to work for." Brendon also did soap time with The Young and the Restless, along with roles in Children of the Corn III and Dave's World. Alyson Hannigan, who plays Willow, feels a little differently from her co-star about going back to high school. "It's not too bad," she said. "It's not like we have to do homework or anything." Hannigan's character Willow plays another of Buffy's sidekicks. She's the girl-next-door type with a twist, since she helps to do battle with legions of undead monsters. Hannigan, in keeping with the other show's actors, is no stranger to television acting. She's guest starred on Roseanne, Picket Fences and Touched By an Angel. So what's coming up for this show's characters? Whedon wouldn't let on much, but one popular character, Angel, will return in a more prominent role. Angel, played by David Boreanaz, plays the vampire with a heart, so to speak. He is attracted to Buffy, as she is for him, but it's hard for love to bloom between a vampire and the town's anointed vampire slayer. As evidenced by the turnout at a San Diego Comic Con panel, vampires can still draw a crowd. Whedon, Hannigan and Brendon stopped in to answer questions about the show, after filming the very first episode of the second season until 5 a.m. that very morning. That sort of fan dedication will pay off, as audience members were clamoring for the good seats. Attendees had a lot on their minds. Will Xander and Willow ever lead fulfilled lives as mere sidekicks? Will Buffy ever find love? Better yet, will she ever find love with someone other than a monster? "She probably won't ever get a boyfriend that isn't a monster," Whedon said. "But it might be a nice monster." I don't know if I'm convinced that Moloch was destroyed, either, merely by electrocution. Now, he may not have been released from the robotic shell he'd inhabited, but more likely was cut off from using it as a tool somehow. Perhaps, as witnessed when the book was scanned in, if someone were to reactivite Roboloch then he might be able retake control. She would have to choose between her desire for him to stay as he is so she can be with him (not prevent him from becoming a vampire), or prevent him from getting the suffering she knows he must endure, therefore letting him live a normal life way back then, having him die of natural causes or something, knowing she would then never encounter him again in her lifetime. (Did that make sense? I"ll try again another time if you guys really wanna know and don't get it...I just read it over and it doesn't really work, but ok.) Also, just thought I'd mention the various things today that made me think of Buffy. Seriously, my thoughts about the show are always in my mind, and these little things just refresh them. I was looking in a mag today and saw an ad for Todd Oldham's shoes for Keds or something. I then thought of Cordelia. I was walking down the street (in the city) and saw a truck for Master Heat and Plumbing. As my car (the car my mom was driving) was leaving a garage, there was a sign that said "Poverty sucks." ("It's like a whole big sucking thing.) THEN, when I came home, on the cover of my bro's issue of Sports Illustrated, it said "A Keeper". Ahhh! Hope this letter was on topic, and even though you guys have said what ObBuffy is, I still don't completely get it and when to use it. If I was supposed to have used it in this letter, soooooooooo sorry, I'm just kinda slow. The show is the best! Oh, also, while I was @ my haircut place, I saw the TV Guide for this week, but was too stupid to check what eps of Buffy are this Sun and Mon. Anyone know which ones they are? "Excuse me, but who gave you permission to exist? Do we hone in on your conversations?" Also, Cordelia said in the beginning lunch scene, "What's her deal?" Later on, someone else said it, though I forget who. Sorry! Regarding a Buffy Christmas ep, here's a possible tidbit: Buffy: (after handing a Vamp a wrapped present) Oops, I forgot the bow! Unfortunately, this "wearing something to identify each other by" idea worked miserably at ComicCon. The items weren't very visible (when worn at all) and people seemed reluctant to approach strangers even after seeing them. It would probably work even worse at the much larger Great America. Prearranged plans to meet beforehand are the only way to go! If you are in BABS (Bay Area Buffy Society), Chris C. and I will be getting in touch with you by email to arrange a group field trip to go see Xander. Yay! Joss Whedon was not nominated, the make-up artists were. If they win, they accept the Emmy, not Joss. Producers usually accept the awards if the show is nominated, as in the case of Chris Carter and the X-Files. Some of the Buffy people may very well be at the Emmys. It isn't as difficult to get tickets to the Emmys as it is for the Oscars. I used to be a seat filler at the Emmys when I worked at Fox. That means anytime a celebrity gets up to use the restroom or go backstage, one of our ranks would run down and sit in their seat until they returned.
