Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the Buffyverse, when a vampire makes you a vampire, your soul departs, and your body is taken over by a demon, right? If this is true, Angel was in Angel's body, his soul left when he became a vampire, and the demon took the place of his soul..After he was cursed, his soul was "returned" to his body...If this is the case, couldn't a simple exorcism make him human again? First off, let me say, that I think we should send Angel to a shrink before we call in the holy fathers (Perhaps a nice Rogerian or Sullivanian psychologist with plenty of kleenex handy, but not a Maslovian, good god! Do we really want to deal with Angel's Hierarchy of Needs?). "I killed my family and friends and I did it with a song in heart." "Mm-hmm. And tell me, how did that make you feel?" Secondly, one of the earlier victims of this question postulated that knowing how to restore vampiric souls would certainly be a powerful addition to Buffy's arsenal (certainly it would reduce the number of random vampire attacks). So, not just that Giles could figure a way to exorcise Angel's demon, but also to turn the rest of the vampire brood into a tortured lot, conflicted by their painful memories of man's inhumanity to man. Now, that said, I'm not sure that people should be jumping to conclusions over Angel and Buffy's angst-ridden romance. We know one thing, first of all. The main selling point for Buffy over the summer has been to promote the forbidden fire that engulfs our slayer and cursed vampire hunk, and so it's to be expected, even for previews of the season premiere. Scratch that, *especially* for previews of the season premiere. Secondly, I viewed that preview last night and I saw what was going on. It looked like they snatched a few choice clips from the episode and meshed them together. All I witnessed from the preview was Buffy and Angel in Buffy's bedroom (how many times have the been in there and nothing's happened?) and Buffy mentioned something like, "I missed you." And then we see a few clips of them dancing together, like they've done many times. No, I'm willing to put money down and say that Buffy and Angel *aren't* slated for partnership during the season premiere. What was trying to be expressed is that the name "Buffy" alone, might be construed by the greater populace to be a show about ditzy cheerleaders. A lot of us know that the story is the other way around for cheerleaders in many respects, but who can stop a stereotype? I'd think that "Buffy" alone could give people who have no knowledge of the show many pictures of a series complete unlike what already exists. When Buffy is attacked by The Three she runs for her house. Is that a really smart move? Letting the Vampires know where the Slayer lives. We see Darla return later so we must assume that the Three told her and the Master where Buffy lives. So why doesn't the Master just send a legion of Vampires to hang around outside Buffy's house to attack, in this episode or in future ones. Of course it had to be that way for the show to work, but I am surprised it didn't get mentioned in later eps. What happen to Buffy's Slayer sense? I know this as been discussed, but Darla is maybe ten yards from her in a almost empty library, yet she can't sense her. I guess she needs to stay with the fashion sense. Much talk was also made about Angel's reaction to the light, It appears as it was discussed before that a vampire must be in direct sunlight to burn. Angel and Darla both stay in the Apartment which is well lit after she lifts the shade, but it doesn't effect either one. Which would mean Angel could have been in the Crypt during WttHM, as long as he wasn't in the direct sunlight. Also, Its light out but Angel is just coming in, and then Darla exits. Where did she go, do we assume that the building has a underground connection to the sewer system? The second season promo was great, I liked the new logo, but prefer the old one. I can understand why they wanted to drop the "Vampire Slayer" part. Seems like we will be seeing a whole new Buffy at least at first. She appears to walk away from Xander and Willow, more than once we see them both with looks of concern on their face over her. I wasn't sure who she was dancing with, but I thought from the looks of it, it might be Patrick Swayze WOW! It does seem that Joss is keeping is word, that Buffy would be having problems after the events in PG. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 1997 18:16:20 -0400 From: Michael Clarke Subject: BUFFY: Re: Questions about "Angel" Christopher B. There have been instances in literature (at least) where a vampire can be disinvited. See "Salem's Lot" by Stephen King for one. Once the invitation has been revoked, the vampire must leave. Remember, these are supernatural creatures that have their own set of rules. What they want can make no difference at all. If they can bend iron, flip humans around like rag dolls, etc., why would a wooden front door stop them in any way? It stops them because it's against the rules to come inside without an invitation. If that invitation is that important, it stands to reason that the withdrawal of it would make a difference as well. As far as the Buffyverse is concerned, we will have to wait and see if Joss covers the whole "disinviting" subject. I think the season premier might settle the subject. We know Angel is in Buffy's room, so if it makes a difference, she will have to ask him inside again. I had a friend in high school who was nicknamed "Buffy," but changed back to her given name after freshman year because of the Valley Girl jokes that were being made at the time. ("Buffy" having been quickly adopted by comedian culture as the quintessential Valley Girl name.) "Buffy" and "Trip" (for men) are both names that have a patina about them of shallow privilege, whether it's entirely fair or not. And I think that was Joss's point with the original script for the movie. Just because someone is called "Buffy", and just because she's a cheerleader, doesn't mean she's necessarily shallow--even if she wants to be, as she clearly does in the early conversations with Merrick. One of the most interesting sequences in "Invisible Girl" (for me) was when Xander and Willow were making fun of the May Queen festivities and saying something like, "What kind of shallow airhead would get excited about being the May Queen?" (I'm going by memory here 'cause I can't find the tape I could swear I made. Grrr!) And Buffy says, "I was May Queen at my old school. It was fun." (She delivered the line beautifully, too--simple and tragic.) The message still seems to be: Don't judge. And I think the more we spend time with Charisma the more we'll presumably see her character's human side--the Buffy side, if you will, that likes doing her nails and cheering and wearing nice clothes because it's just fun. Just to let everyone know, the graphic for the shirts should be up on a webpage shortly (read: by tomorrow if ol' Murphy Law oesn't step in :-). Also, because so many people want to see the graphic before ordering (perfectly understandable, IMHO) I'm going to add an extra week to the deadline. So you have until Sept. 15 to get your orders to me. Also, if money is tight right now or something, that's fine. I will be running these shirts again in about six months. Or, if you need to post date a check or something by a week, that's fine too, just email me in advance and let me know. That's about it for now. I watched her from the closet. I didn't read it, I swear." (Now, how valid is an oath given by a vampire, I mean, what can they swear to?) Buffy: "Oh. Oh." (Second one very sadly.) Angel: "I did a lot of thinking today (hanging out in a closet all day must give one a chance to think!), I really can't be around you, 'cause when I am...." Buffy: "Hey, no big, water over the bridge..." Angel: (speaking over Buffy's next line) "All I can think about is how badly I want to kiss you." Buffy: "Under the bridge, over the dam, I think it is." (Last part indistinct.) Buffy: "Kiss me?" and so on The point being that Buffy is saying that it's no big deal that Angel can't be around her, and at first can't remember the appropriate metaphor, which means that, like water that has already gone UNDER a bridge or OVER a dam, their inability to get cozy is something that can't be changed. jb "You know, hey, I don't know what everyone's talking about, that outfit doesn't make you look like a hooker hehehe." Scott? And why? That sorta sucks because It started out "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and now it has been reduced to 'Buffy' Does anyone know why? The name sounded cheesey but now just Buffy makes it sound like a 'Clueless' spinoff in my opinion. Now the logo looks great but hey Joss put the Vampire Slayer back in Buffy. Please? With sugar on top? My bet is on Buffy because they wouldn't start the season without showing something relating to Buffy's traumatic experience in 'Prophecy Girl'. Would they? Maybe relating to her past? How true, and it is so ironic, because originally they wanted to do away with "Buffy" and just call the show "Slayer." (Kind of like BH 90210 becoming "90210.") Apparently, they thought "Buffy" would be what would turn people off because it had such an '80s mystic. >I think the reason the ratings aren't higher is because people don't >realize that this show is about more than vampires. I think it's because it's on the WB. (Sorry, Scott.) The WB just doesn't have a "Seinfeld" type show that they can launch new shows behind. Maybe BtVS will become their new "E.R." WB does not make BtVS, but it does make the WB promos. OTOH, The BtVS execs. do not make, or have any influence or veto power over, the promos. Yes, they may "suggest" things to the WB, but that is pretty much limited to "Please don't spoil this episode with the promo." So I think it would be wise NOT to draw conclusions based on one promo. We've been griping for weeks about the way that the WB has been running a bunch of promos each week with David Boreanaz, even though they then show an ep. w/o Angel. IOW, I think it's fair to figure that the WB is continuing to play up Angel beyond his actual role in the show. To be honest, if Joss, David, et. al. actually drop the campiness and turn BtVS into a teen version of Beauty and the Beast, they'll lose fans (including me, most definitely). Also, I see some people are trying to determine who Buffy is dancing with in the promo based on the hair of the guy. Well, David now has a short haircut, so I don't think you can tell who the guy is based on the hair. In fact, I saw a new pic. of Charisma lying on the floor that is excellent. With any luck, I'll have it on my web page this weekend. The opening credits are going to be reworked. However, since they haven't shot all the episodes yet, this season's credits can only have shots from the first 4-5 eps, unlike last season's credits.
