Beagle, "The Last Unicorn" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Sep 1997 19:19:31 -0500 From: Foobar Subject: BUFFY: Some random thoughts. You know, I was thinking about something earlier today. Probably in the shower, because it had that vague "this-seems-really-important" feel about it at the time, and my shower-thoughts tend to drift that way. Anyway, I was thinking about Calvin and Hobbes, and how upset I was-- angry, even-- when Bill Watterson decided to bring the strip to an end in 1995. I'll admit it. I was pissed off. Dammit, Calvin was a big part of my life. I went through high school reading Calvin, and then I went through college reading Calvin. Calvin was IT for me, my fuzzy blanket, my teddy bear, my bestest friend, for almost ten years. And one guy, one little man, decided he could take it away from me, just because he was tired of doing it. How dare he? He had a responsibility to me. He couldn't just stop. But you know what? He did. And somehow, amazingly, life went on. This does have a point, I promise. The point is this: suddenly, from out of nowhere, this morning in the shower, I saw it another way. Like one of those funny pictures, the ones where you either see two faces, or a vase, but neither both at once, I blinked and saw it from a different angle. Suddenly I realized that, instead of being upset that Mr. Watterson took Calvin and Hobbes away from me, I should have been pleased, hell, I should have been ecstatic-- no, I should have thanked my lucky STARS that he was kind and generous enough to share Calvin and Hobbes with me in the first place. Think about it. This one guy gave me countless moments of happiness over the course of a decade. One guy, and he didn't ask anything much in return. How do you say "thanks" for something like that? I bring it all up because lately I've kinda-sorta felt the same way about "Buffy." My life's been really stressful for the last month or so, but I've been able to come home on Monday nights and turn out the lights and watch Buffy and get away from it all. For an hour a week (two if I'm lucky) I get to imagine that I'm in a world vastly more interesting than my own, and that I'm surrounded by people that I'm really coming to adore. But that was just, what, 12 episodes? Twelve hours. And there's a whole new season coming up soon, and I have NO idea what's going to happen. Giles could turn into a real jerk. Willow could get fed up with the whole Xander thing and turn to absynthe and punk music. Buffy could... Buffy could die. Again. And I've caught myself saying things like, "I'll be really upset if X happens," or "If they do X I'll be mad." And, frankly, I've heard others say it, too. Just right this minute, sitting here after a long day, I'm thinking that that's not such a great attitude to have. Once again, this one guy (Joss) has given me 12 hours of utter happiness. Call me a weirdo, but for whatever reason Buffy satisfies my need for an escapism-fix, and some weeks it's been the only thing I've really looked forward to. And I've never sent him a check in the mail. I've never bought him a present. Hell, I've never even said "thanks." If you forced me to pin myself down, I suppose I'd say that's my real point here. I'm trying to say, "thanks." Thanks to people like Joss who create these fantasies, and to people like Sarah and Alyson and Nick and all the others who actually bring them to life. Thanks for letting us hang out; it's been a hell of a ride. I guess if there were any real justice in the world, I'd buy each and every one of you a drink, and shake your hand, and say this in person. Hell, if there were any justice, I'd give you the shirt of my back and let you stay at my house. 'Fraid this is the best I know how to do, though. Anyone agree? No! I, for one, definitely don't agree! What makes the show so attractive is the dynamic interactions between all the characters. The show WOULDN'T be the show without the characters of Willow and Giles. Alyson's character Willow is a essential part of the show. Buffy gravitation to Willow (Welcome to the Hellmouth) represented her rejection of her past - being in the popular airheaded elite clique. Willow is Buffy's true gal-pal, and a support mechanism every girl dealing with angst needs! And Willow is accepting of people's quirks. I think that Buffy wouldn't be as interactive, or complex if she were forced to be "alone". She needs the female companion. Besides, a great many people who watch the show can easily identify with "Willow". I certainly can, I was never accepted by the females in my highschool, as I lacked their list of priorities. I was alienated from them for my lack of interest in 'high' fashion, or disinterest in whoever was 'hot' that week. And look at me now, a net addict! Willow is far easier to identify to than Buffy. As for ASH, again, nope. The show would sink without him! Giles is adorable! He's the Watcher, and he represents the adult maturity in conflict with youthful brashness. Without Giles, Buffy would never denied her role as 'Slayer' much harder. And Giles is the adult liason that Buffy needs to move about and not be questioned. I don't think there's anything about the show I would change. I enjoy watching the character development Joss explores. The characters of Willow, Xander and Giles have evolved from exposure to such an impactful personality as Buffy's! Even Cordelia has changed in response to Buffy's presence, although, she resists change well! This new season should be facinating, to see what new directions the show goes in! I suppose it might turn into a kind of Batman (tv series) thing, though. Or Love Boat. Probably wouldn't work. But not having any kind of limits things, doncha think? I could see, oh, Dana Delany, as a sorceress or something, that sort of thing. Might make the show more fun (if that's the object). Then again, you don't want the guest stars to overshadow the regulars, especially when the show is just starting out on a new network. ObBuffyII: I wonder if Kristine Sutherland (Buffy's mom) will ever ultimately become a regular in the credits. I mean, Joe E. Tata on 90210 finally made it, right? Anyone agree? Wow, why does making such a statement on a fan list remind me of dousing oneself with gasoline and handing matchbooks to random passerby's? But I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not just flame-baiting. I think the characters played (quite effectively IMHO) by Alyson and ASH bring a much needed counterpoint of innocence, awkwardness, and bookishness to the anti-intellectual, confident bravado of Buffy and Xander. I daresay the chemistry would fall apart without their complementary energy. Some of the show's best moments IMO have been "soft" (though not necessarily romantic). Like the scene between Buffy and Willow in PG when Willow is describing how the killings in the TV room traumatized her. That was a fantastic and touching scene, even though it was "soft" (involving no action or horror). Or the scene between Buffy and her mom in PG. Serious, poignant moments like this are really cool. I have a feeling the Prophecy Girl is the model for next season, action sprinkled heavily with more serious emotional stuff. I think that if I could change
anything about the show, it would be the cast.
I think that the show would work
much better without Alyson Hannigan and ASH.
anyone agree?

Ack! sacrilege!!!! I love the watcher and both Slayerettes! they help make BtVS what it is!

Tom would probably gladly appear for the publicity. At least he now has "classic" status so it wouldn't be the scenario of the recently faded music star appearing on a TV show for a low fee as a "big celebrity" to boost his sagging popularity (like the Monkees on the Brady Bunch show in the 70's). Macho Tom would probably even help Buffy out by dusting a few vamps himself, without missing a beat (keeps the female fans turned on too). Unless of course, he's actually one of the vampires (recall this thread's recent accusations against Elvis). In which case, heaven help us (not to mention his groupies). This is something she is in great need of since she doesn't see her dad too much because of her parents divorce. I would hate to see Allison Hannigan go as well. She is a wonderful actress. She has truly brought Willow to life. In my opinion, Allison, a 23 year old woman has done a better job at pretending to be 16 than any of the 90210 cast ever did.
