The problem with poor Cordy is that even when she has a valid and profound point (as with the leather Mercedes seats) she often chooses to express it in a way (reflecting her lifestyle) that sounds shallow and cliched. I have a feeling we're going to care more and more for her over the next season, nonetheless. I chose the same Terminator quote ("We loved enough to last a lifetime," as best as I could remember it). And some little kid came up with the Star Wars "Force" quote which made everyone groan. That's quite a coincidence (unless of course there was a Buffy writer in the panel audience, unbeknownst to us, who was inspired by our collective game to include it in a script; but that would be a long shot). Yes, she was with the others. There are four people hanging down: Giles, Willow, Ms. Calendar...and Cordelia. During the rescue by Angel and Xander, she is on the floor in the loft to the left of Giles and Ms. Calendar; you can see her for just a moment as the camera pans to Xander and Willow in the foreground. Yes they did make the show a little sexier and a little darker. But I don't think this is a bad thing. They did darken the show up, but they didn't lose any of the humor. Its the pacing of the show that's important. One of the big turn ons in my favorite shows (X-files, Millenium, Buffy) is continuity. The episodes are connected, events in one act as a building block for another, and these events have ramifications. Just because everything wasn't addressed in this episode doesn't mean it was forgotten. I'm sure we'll hear more about what was bothering Buffy, the relationship between Xander and Willow, Angel and Buffy, etc. The show is spookier, and a little more glitzy. But hey, a show this good deserves a bigger budget, better effects, etc. right? Just wait until they get some bigger music acts on the show. I'd love to see Matthew Sweet play at the Bronze (having seen him live in Boston wasn't enough) There have already been MANY comments on the show already, but there were some interesting comments I'd like to address *Buffy and Xander dance - I'm torn. It did seem a little out of character, but so did Xander's panting for Buffy to show up. On the other hand, the arguments about Buffy driving her friends away to keep them safe does validify her actions. She may have acted like a grade A vixen, but it was calculated to affect Willow, Xander AND Angel. *general sexual tension - again the bosom and grouping comments do seem a little odd, but the friendships are reaching a new level. It could be that all their pent up desires are beginning to take their toll. I'm still kinda surprised that Xander still likes her after the rejection. Maybe that explained his confusion during the dance: she said she doesn't think of him in that way, but that dance suggested otherwise... * sappy music - hello, that was classic buffy humor! Sure, they leave you with the sweet and happy ending (which is almost a relief considering what everyone went through) but at the end the tag line from the Anointed One (like the all black look) made me laugh out loud, even when I knew it was coming! * Giles and Calendar - their greetings did seem appropriate to me, and I'm really looking forward to seeing their relationship blossom. It's funny how the older couple are relating so much better than the kids! I hope that Joss doens't inject any angst into their relationship, we have plenty already. It could be amusing to see Ms. Calendar helping Giles in the role of Watcher. I'd be REALLY cool if Giles was out of action for an episode, and watching the Slayerettes turn to Ms. Calendar for help! She IS a technopagan after all, with her own resources and quite possibly powers...? Anyway, keep on watching and spreading the news. In "The Pack," Willow defended Buffy to Hyena Xander by saying Buffy helped them. Hyena Xander said they didn't need help until Buffy came into their lives. Willow sorta had to agree with that. Now, Xander and Willow have an uneventful Summer until Buffy returns from her summer vacation. Then they get attacked by a vamp. Is hanging around with Buffy just bad luck for them? Which is cause and which is effect? Do vamps draw Buffy to strike in Sunnydale? Or does Buffy draw vamps to strike in Sunnydale? Or does some third factor draw them all to come and strike in Sunnydale? Why did the Anointed Boy wait all Summer until Buffy was back to dig up the Master? (other than the fact that it's her show, of course). She wasn't necessary. Was he waiting for Cordelia and Ms. Calendar to return from their vacations, so he could have them all together? The Master killed her, in fact he did more than that. His parting shot "You gave the power to leave. If you hadn't come, I could have never escaped. Think about that." killed her spirit. If she had just killed the Anointed One and not shown up, the Master would still be stuck. And then to find out, after killing her and saying that, some vampires wanted to bring him back so she could experience him all over again? If she were a weaker person, she would collapse. The fact that she tortured the vampire was shocking, but I understand why she did it. She was losing control; despite her efforts to save and protect her friends, she was powerless again, and taking it out on the vampire. She has no more sympathy for them after last season, and probably doesn't view them as human. I DON'T think it was the right thing to do, but I don't think she'll be torturing any more vampires. Crushing the Master's bones was how she "spanked her inner moppet", the more I think about it, the more I loved WSWB. It had a lot of depth and passion, a rarity for TV these days. I thought the burning up in flame was a *tad* contrived. I was hoping our new 'preacher' would stick around for awhile. But the effect was cool, once it happened. I just was thinking, here's this nice intelligent (well, for a vampire) creature, so why did he RUSH the Slayer who had a nice pointy object waiting? Vampires are traditionally very susceptible to fire. I thought Absalom was wicked cool too (what a cool name!) He was very intellgent, but vampires are creatures of passion, and easily enter a frenzy when taunted. Since Buffy nixed his plans to revivify the Master he was already furious. Her sarcastic comment to his threat pushed him over the edge. (I play a lot of Vampire:the Masquerade, which is where I draw a lot of my comparisons from. Naw, you're not alone, I had a similar reaction. As I watched it, I thought, "they're really going to reach to try to make this banter into something sexual," as in, like, "Take me, then, if you're man enough." But smg just gave such a flat reading of the line and played it so straight that it went nowhere and sort of became a juvenile "I'm tougher than you" thing. Nothing wrong with that, but it didn't exactly advance the characters as far as I was concerned. Then again, maybe more realistic for the overall plot and clueless high school kids (y'all are free to correct me on this). :) jb "Hi guys. Miss me?" Throughout season three, Ivanova interrupted moments between John and Delenn, much like what happened to Willow and Xander. This has become known as Ivanova Interruptus. :-) Of course, Joss just likes playing with our minds, so he was bound to interrupt the Willow/Xander kiss. However, I agree with earlier posts which suggested Xander was already moving away from the kiss. I think Xander's just now realizing how much he cares about Willow; he wasn't ready for the kiss. We all KNOW that Xander LOVES his chocolatey goodness- unless the clown in nightmares permanently ruined his love for them. Also- My roommate noticed that in Buffy's dream, Willow was kind of a blabbering idiot... hmmmm subconscious opinions???? and on that note, I have to complain a moment about Willow's clueless behavior in the premiere! the clog dancing remark was over the top and then Willow (of all people) saying, "oh yeah, Sarcasm.." I think the writers forgot that Willow is naive and good hearted- not oblivious and insipid. happy wednesday morn to you all miss hayse ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 1997 08:21:47 -0500 (CDT) From: Anime Nut Subject: BUFFY: Ep 3 contradiction Hey, everybody! While I impatiently wait for WGN to broadcast "When She Was Bad", I thought I'd look ahead to the third episode of this season. In doing so, I believe I've found yet another screw-up by TV Guide. The TV Guide site describes the episode as dealing with a foreign exchange student who happens to be a revived mummy. The WGN site (which has always been more reliable than TV Guide) lists as the episode as "'School Hard': Parent-teacher night is disrupted by uninvited guests". This sounds obviously like Die Hard in a school. Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with mummies. I'm gonna' go with the WGN site on this one, since TV Guide has listed the wrong episode of BTVS at least three times in the past. Here's to "Some Assembly Required" and "School Hard" -- hope they're great! That whole scene was forced-- Buffy knew that she had to save Cordelia- and yet she's up for some spiteful banter in the meanwhile???? And the wording of the remarks was ridiculously sexual "You think you can TAKE me?" "Why are you riding me?" etc.... please. It was bad timing- and it was annoying. It was a symbol of forgiveness. I suspect it was all small talk. (The CC said: talking softly) After they talked about the boring teacher, they probably went on to discuss the history assignment, the Unidentifiable Blobby Object that was served for lunch yesterday, and what Eddie heard Joe say to Felicia at soccer practice. And since the actors knew that the conversation was not going to be audible, some lipreading might well have revealed an innocuous non-Buffy-related conversation.
