Since this episode borrows so much from Frankenstein, the `re-animation' methods involved probably *greatly* amplified Darryl's strength and endurance, possibly beyond that of most vampires. Also, when Buffy fought Luke, she "fought smart", breaking the back-lit window to distract Luke into worrying about sunlight, then staking him from behind. She used good tactical sense dealing with the She-Mantis as well -- bug spray, Giles' recordings of bat sonar, and *then* a machete -- but she had no way of knowing any specific weaknesses for Darryl, so she had to just try to slug it out. In response to Jennifer Hawthorne's message about the disappointing SAR, I will hereby post a review that I posted on the posting board moments ago... Anime Nut's review of "Some Assembly Required": Hey, everybody! I've been getting a lot of flak for giving SAR two and a half stars on my site, so I thought I'd make it clear exactly what I liked and didn't like about the episode. I'll start with the dislikes so I can end the letter on a positive note. What I did not like: - - the role of Willow. This ep's writer, Ty King, overplayed Willow's nerdiness with such lines as "Nothing in here but back issues of Scientific American. Ooh! I haven't read this one." Also, she was virtually useless in this ep. Her big moment came in retrieving an article from the coroner's office. Did they really need Willow to tap into the coroner's office, only to get an article from a mass-produced newspaper? It seemed like Aly did her best to salvage her role in the ep by using her super cute voice inflections as much as possible, particularly for the words "little powdered donuts". - - Xander's lines, despite their hilarity, sounded way too scripted and rehearsed. The whole "People want the dream" speech just sorta' fell out of his mouth as if he'd rehearsed the line to death. - - the whole Daryl plotline may have been creepy and gross at times, but it was also very boring. The army of zombies theory was a very unconvincing red herring, and there was too much sympathy given to the character of Daryl that he made a very poor villain for Buffy to fight. - - the death of Daryl was sadly anticlimactic. Daryl bodyslams Buffy. Daryl prepares to smash desk on Buffy. Daryl climbs onto corpse in the middle of a fire? Come on!!! Not only did Buffy get her butt kicked by a football player, but she had to rely on her enemy committing suicide? I couldn't have felt more cheated. Not that I got that out of the way... What I liked (if not loved) about the ep - - the whole Giles and Jenny Calendar relationship. While I still feel that Jenny needs to retain her bite from IRYJ, I am officially rooting for this relationship. Giles' "Well, I think it's rather odd that a nation that prides itself on its virility should feel compelled to strap on forty pounds of protective gear just in order to play rugby" line absolutely ruled! - - the look on Angel's face as Cordy pulled him out of the library was priceless. - - Charisma has outdone herself as the Queen of the Scream. Not only can she scream so long and loudly, but she can convey a nice range of emotion in her screams. Compare her get-me-out-of-here scream when Daryl removes her blindfold to her scream when she sees the body that her head's going to be transplanted onto. She deserves an award just for that. - - "Ms. Calendar's my father." 'Nuff said. Since the pros and cons sorta' balance out, I was forced to give this ep an average rating -- two and a half stars. To sum up my review, I would say that I loved so many individual moments in this ep, but the underlying plotline dragged the whole ship down. Just a few things. Something about this episode just didn't feel right to me. Perhaps it was the TV guide article that I read right before it came on. Xander and Cordelia? Ummm hello? I understand the attraction....for both of them, but how could Xander stand to date a girl that has consistently called him a geek? And how is Cordelia going to explain to her friends that all of the sudden she is dating such a "loser"? When I was in HS you could only go so far putting your popularity on the line until you lost all credibility as a snob. Talking to the nerds in the hallway occasionally could be accepted, but dating one? I don't think so, which leads me to believe that Cordy will either become a full fledged Slayerette or that she and Xander will merely indulge in a slight flirtation. I just hope that for my sake, that at least by the end of the series Willow and Xander will pair up. Did anyone else notice that at the football game, Xander had on an off-white wind breaker amazingly similar to Angel's....what is it they say? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. :-)) I don't agree that Xander is "over" Buffy....that whole *male* thing when they come into the Library...."Xander"...."Angel".... Whatever. I have to say that there were some hilarious lines and as a whole I enjoyed the episode, but I enjoyed it more because it was a new episode than because of anything in it. I just felt sort of disappointed that more of last weeks episode wasn't discussed. There was also some talk of Angel's unecessary appearence's in this ep. Remember how before the new season started there was all of the talk about the show dealing with more romance. Well the way it seems to me is that this is how they are going to incorporate it. By just adding it where they can. Last two things. If Xander is such a non-studier....would he really use words like prodigious? And unfortunately I am already obsessing about next weeks episode Why would Spike and Drucilla cut the phone lines.....who exactly would Buffy et al call? Vampire Busters? Just a thought. This just occurred to me while reading this post: Considering what happened the last time someone said something about "thank you for saving my life" to Xander, maybe he reacted harsher than he should without even realizing why himself? Isn't the subconscious a wonderful thing? Someone up there loves me.. Beautiful British Vampires with Punk attitude. Thank you!!!!!! Finally-- vampires that not only have blood lust, but style and I'm assuming very SHARP tongues (and of course incisers :-) I've been somewhat disapointed in our standard hunks as of late (Angel is whipped and Xander has had a hyena relapse...without the laughter) so I'm glad these new vampires look lust worthy! miss hayse ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 1997 15:00:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Amanda Subject: BUFFY: Re: BUFFY SPOILER FOR SAR: Giles voice over n Tue, 23 Sep 1997, Virginia Eveland wrote: > Hi, > > Perhaps my brain wasn't functioning, but is it not a new thing that > ASH did the voice over for the beginning? I was totally freaking out for the first five minutes of Buffy cause my idiot sister moved my Buffy tape and I missed the first and best scene but I did notice that Giles was reading the lines. I've never noticed that before. he didn't do that in WSWB did he. Whatever it is- I liked it. I hope the continue it cause it makes it more personal. What I've wondered is whether Cordelia knows Angel is a vampire - it's sort of been skipped over in the storyline. I suppose I can just assume that she does, but given her previous encounters with the undead, would she feel so comfortable around him to a)cling to him and b)have him accompany her home? I'm fairly certain that she hasn't seen him in his vampire state yet - the closest she would have come would have been in WSWB, but alas she was both a)passed out and b)strangely missing from whole parts of the scene. Ah, and as to quotes, I've got to go with "Mated with". He simply doesn't say enough syllables for "made it with" - and it's a definite 't' and 'ed' sound. I mean, even when she was a bitca he wasn't as snappy. You think he would have listened to her when she was being nice and thanking him for saving her life and all. I was truly shocked when he didn't even let her finish talking. I like the corner Cordy's turnung. She's nicer but her edge still remains. As in "mating ritual" or "mating dance", which is basically what it was when you come right down to it. Plus I just can't see such a suave and sophisticated older vampire-type guy like Angel using the phrase "made it". It would sound weird, like if Giles had used the "I have a thing" speech or asked Ms. C if she liked Mexican.
