Someone mentioned recently something to the effect that that Cordelia probably would have difficulty dating Xander because he is such a loser. I disagree. I think Cordy is somewhat jealous of the friendship between Buffy, Willow, and Xander, and she was trying to make herself look better by putting them down. I don't think she ever really thought they were losers--she just felt a bit threatend by Willow's brains, Buffy's looks, and Xander's apparent disinterest in her beauty. I take it that Willow and Xander really aren't geeks despite Cordelia's treatment of them. I certainly don't think they are portrayed as geeks. They really aren't even portrayed as "lovable losers." I think they are presented as being cool. This is somewhat reinforced in Invisible Girl. Willow and Xander were talking about signing Marci's yearbook "Have a great summer" and what a horrible thing this was (as if it had never happened to them). I may be the oldest person on the list (I'm 32) so I am a bit out of touch with what is cool nowadays. As a college English teacher, I identify more with Giles than I do the kids:-) So, are they geeky, or is my Cordelia/jealousy theory more accurate? ObBuffy: In another blaze of SAR-related rationalization, I was wondering about why Angel's sense of fashion was apparently slain over the summer. Then I thought, you know, all we've ever seen angel wear in the first season was black and white. This is not a fashion stretch. What distinguished him was that he wore his clothes well. This says nothing about his ability to dress himself. He could be the Urkel of the BtVS set for all we know (and even Urkel is wearing Tommy Hilfiger these days). Let him experiment with his clothes. I'm all for it. He may wind up looking like Xander yet. Someone noted yesterday that maybe Xander was trying to style like Angel, but what if it were vice versa? I mean, Angel has admitted being jealous of Xander. What if what we're witnessing is the slow merging of their personalities into Buffy's "perfect" man--Xangel, or perhaps Ander? these are the things that disturb my rest. We are all entitled to our opinions, (DUH!) but I think Joss and the crew are allowed to have a few so-so episodes. The way I see it is, the season premire was to tie some loose ends from the season finale, and SAR was sort of a random story to bring about new subplots. From what I got through different articles about this new season, I think the focus will manily be on Spike and Dru so SAR is just some lead up to the main bulk of the season. Also, we enjoyed last season much more than this one's so far because our expectations are pretty much shooting through the ceiling. We had no real comparison (except the movie) and so I think we were open to anything they threw at us. And anyway, I agree that SAR wasn't the greatest episode to date. Anime Nut pretty much summed it up as to why. But BtVS is still da' show! Oh, and about her saying something about knowing how it is to lose someone close, I really got the feeling that she was referring to Merrick. Like I've mentioned before, in WttH, she says to Giles along the lines of "Why can't you people just leave me alone?" -You people- meaning "Watchers." Just my cents thrown in! Let me clear this up. I didn't mean that *I* thought Xander was a loser, but Cordelia has not been shy about saying it. When I was in HS we had a *ton* of different cliques. In most cases, people of the same clique dated only within *their* group...sad to say but my HS very much resembled that of "Clueless". Now, if someone were to date outside of their clique, especially if the person they decided to date had been a constant source of joking and ridicule you might very well get ostrasized from your clique. I didn't mean to say that I thought it was impossible for Cordy to choose the slayerettes over her own Clique of friends, all I said was that if she had gone to my school, she would *have* to choose one group or the other. I just sent off a message to someone I knew would know an answer. I would bet that this is Howard Gordon from the X-Files because my friend says that Howard Gordon is no longer working on XF. I love XF, but I don't think that Mark Snow's music would quite fit in with some of the uber-trendy tunes they have at the Bronze :) glee - ------ Xander: To read makes our speaking English good. - "I Robot, You Jane" Buffy the Vampire Slayer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 16:31:17 -0400 From: Jesse Jou Subject: Re: BUFFY: Are they really geeks? I think this is a very good point. Would Cordy be willing to give up "the popular zone" to date a boy from a different social circle? It's clear from Invisible Girl that she really isn't happy there (or at least she doesn't find it particularly satisfying). Now that she's sorta fallen into the Slayerette clique: will Little Cordelia be happy at last? Part of me wants to see all the romantic weepiness of a Edward and Mrs. Simpson kind of situation with Cordelia surrendering her May Queen crown in the name of the name of love, condemning her shallow peers for their intolerance of her geek love, yet part of me wants to see la belle dame sans merci crush Xander's heart under her foot, just for kicks. We shall see. I hereby cast my vote for Dr. Gregory being the person Buffy referred to when she said, "I know what it's like to lose someone." in SAR. Reasons: 1) Willow said, "He's the only teacher who doesn't think Buffy's a felon." 2) He seemed to genuinely admire Buffy, as teacher to a student, and he let her know it. Considering how little adult approval Buffy gets, she was probably starved for some positive influences. Giles can't do it all. 3) Buddy said she liked him while she and Willow were in the library recovering from the shock of finding the body. 4) the last scene, where she tucks the shattered glasses into the jacket in the closet. Someone said on an earlier post that Willow had looked really pretty in this episode, well a guy friend that I am trying to convert into a slayerette came over last night and we watched some of last season and the two from this season. As we were watching the end of WSWB and Xander makes the joke about grinding their enemies into talcum powder the camera fixes on Willow and she smiles this *electric* smile at Buffy. Anyway...Matt was like "Rewind that, Rewind that!"...and I'm going..."huh" and he is jerking the remote out of my hand and replays the scene.....and he starts drooling over Willow. He went on about it for like 10 min. For those who taped it and didn't notice it....go back and watch this scene....I for one have never thought Willow was geeky....just understatedly pretty. Well, when she flashes that smile there is nothing understated about it....she is *beautiful* Did anyone else notice this....or am I sounding as much like an idiot as my friend did? Second thing was the scene in the Library with Cordy and Xander. When she says she has to go and he says how bad that is....then he says...."bu bye" Did anyone else notice a little David Spade in a red devil costume sitting on Xander's shoulder ? I must be losing it....coulda swore I saw it. Last thing....driving down the road today.....listening to the soundtrack for "My Best Friend's Wedding" and I start picturing Xander and Cordy together and thinking about how badly Willow would be hurt that she had been passed over *twice* and I started crying. Nope....I'm definately losing it. Yes, now Giles did say that it may have the movements, the memories, even the personality of the human it took over, but that it is nonetheless a demon at the core. To which you answer: >I am strongly under the impression that the whole demon possession thing is >a bit of Watcher propaganda. Uh oh, I hear the beast of moral relativism once more, stalking slowly through the brush around our campsite, disturbing the perfect deadness of night. Everybody stay close together! Questioning the canon of the watchers? Help! the moral compass spins wildly! How will we ever know truth if we can't trust the word of the Watchers? I can just picture vampire parents saying to their vampire children, "Don't believe those human Watchers and the lies they tell about us! They will teach you to be ashamed of yourselves by calling you demons at the core. We are a proud, strong people with a noble heritage!" To a "loser" like Jesse (or even Marcie), there might be a certain appeal to being a vamp. A sense of belonging, power, magnetism, a certain elite allure (not to mention getting inducted by cuties like Darla). "Jesse" certainly talked the perks up after his conversion. Whereas a "winner" like one of Cordy's boyfriends might actually be worse off (subordinate to the Master, no longer able to revel in earthly successes). But Giles would likely argue that it is the demon's art to talk as Jesse would have talked, to make a Jesse-like argument in defense of the demonic conversion using Jesse's values, but not Jesse himself (who has presumably flown the coop). Watcher propaganda? Boy, first my faith in the credibility of other elite information groups (like the FBI and CIA) was shaken (like when I was about 5). Now, the Watchers. Who's next, Barney? Lisa P.S. Do do you think demons have genders? Can any demon infect any person, regardless of sex (or age)? Does the demon become the gender of person invaded? Are there individual demons are just one big common demon that spreads into each successive victim like same air passing from the Space Shuttle into Mir, into a cosmonaut, into soccer ball he inflates, into a comrade he resuscitates? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 16:47:36 -0500 From: KiNeTiC Subject: Re: BUFFY: Who she lost JACYNTHE wrote: > > I had a private Buffy marathon today, and one of the eps was, of course, > "Teacher's Pet." > > I hereby cast my vote for Dr. Gregory being the person Buffy referred to > when she said, "I know what it's like to lose someone." in SAR. > > Reasons: > 1) Willow said, "He's the only teacher who doesn't think Buffy's a felon." > 2) He seemed to genuinely admire Buffy, as teacher to a student, and he > let her know it. I kind of disagree, maybe the writers were leaning towards the movie buffy's loss of Merrick (From the film), her first watcher, remember he was the one who told her all about her being in the first prophecy of being a vampire hunter, and sadly she lost him halfway through the film.... - -Alex M. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 16:50:00 -0700 From: Lawless Subject: Re: BUFFY: Another SAR question Slayer5454@aol.com wrote: > was a slayer before coming to Sunnydale, in LA.
