There's a list information page set up at http://www.mindspring.com/~romana/buffylist/index.html. The buffy FAQ can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1763/buffyfaq.html. Please check it out ASAP--Cagey has done a wonderful job with it and it will answer a bunch of your questions about the show and fandom. PLEASE READ THE FAQ before posting questions to the list-- many common questions are covered there. Because we want this list to be a great place to talk about "Buffy," we are setting up a few ground rules. If you've ever been involved in a discussion list, many of these rules will look familiar. Hopefully, they'll make list life more interesting (and more fun) for everyone. Please note: we enforce these rules. This is an extremely high- volume list, and we want to make sure that the volume is relevant to the show. 1. Keep posts on topic. Topics should be related to Buffy the series, Buffy the movie, the actors involved in either project, etc.. Discussion of vampires in other universes is fine as long as they're being discussed in relation to the Buffy universe. 2. Please be careful with the use of strong imagery or language in consideration of younger list members. Think "rated PG." Also, no masking (replacing one letter in a potentially offensive word with an asterisk). 3. No advertising of non-Buffy related items or services. If you want to post information about Buffy-related merchandise, conventions, etc., clear it through one of us first. Also, no attachments, or binary files of any sort (including images, wavs, MOVs, etc). 4. Please don't post fiction to this list. There is a separate Buffy fiction list (subscription info below). 5. If you get advance information on a new episode, or see an episode earlier than the national viewing time, and you want to post about it, please do the following: **Mark the post as a "spoiler" in the subject header. **Leave about twelve lines (blank or with non-spoiler info) at the top of the post. This ensures that anyone who doesn't like knowing about an episode ahead of time is "protected." :) The blank space is for people whose mailers automatically open up the next piece of mail, without giving them a chance to see "spoiler" in the header. Spoiler warnings are not necessary after the start of the episode's national viewing time, which is currently set at 9 p.m. Mondays, Eastern Standard Time though we request that at this point you please put the episode title in the subect line. Spoiler warnings are not necessary for reruns. 6. Most importantly, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO FLAMING ONLIST. We have absolutely zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. Flames can kill a list, permanently damage relationships, and make life a lot less fun for everyone. Broadly defined, a flame is a personally derogatory, inflammatory comment about another list member, their progenitors, or about any of the actors, writers, directors, producers or crew of "Buffy." Disagreements-- even heated ones-- are expected. But the minute you start slamming someone personally, you will face the Wrath of Jill and Sharon. First offense: offender is unsubscribed for one week. Second offense: offender is unsubscribed to the Buffy list for a minimum of three months. If the offender returns and flames again, they're offlist permanently. And no, it doesn't matter that the actors, writers, etc. from "Buffy" aren't onlist; we won't put up with anyone flaming them anyway. There are slander laws against it. It's also common courtesy. Determination of what is (and what is not) a flame is made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. Determinations of any penalties associated with flames are also made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. 7. Related to #6, the listowners reserve the right to "kill" any discussion threads which either of the listowners deem offensive, or which appear to be degenerating into a flame war. If either one of us declares a topic "dead," it's dead. Anyone who continues the discussion thread, against our express wishes, will be immediately unsubscribed for one week. 8. Please limit quotes of a previous post to four lines maximum per point you are responding to. Buffy is a high traffic list, and we're asking subscribers to be mindful of wasted bandwidth when they respond to posts. For example, here's an original quote: >I just love Buuffy the Vampire Slayer. It's my favorite show, and about >the only thing I watch on television anymore. I look forward to each >and every episode. DOes anyone know hot to write to the stars of the >show, or where to write to show our support? Willow is my favorite >character, but I like Buffy a lot to. And Giles! Woo hoo! I recognize >him from VR5. If you want to answer this person's questions about where to write, there's no need to include the extra stuff, so your response should look like this: >Does >anyone know hot to write to the stars of the show, or where to write >to show our support? You can even clean it up further and put it onto two lines, but you get the picture. Only include the relevant stuff in your response, so that people get what you're talking about. Penalties: First offense: Offlist warning (clearly marked WARNING: Overquoting). Second offense: Removal from the list for one week. 9. Please limit your .sig to 6 lines maximum, but do include your name and email address at the bottom of each post so someone can respond to you privately if they want to. Penalties for not following this rule are the same as for #8. 10. Do NOT post personal information, or requests for personal information, about the cast, crew, etc. of "Buffy" to this list. Personal information includes (but is not limited to) home address, telephone number, email address (unless the individual gives it out freely), etc. It's certainly fine to discuss who's dating whom, or how tall someone is, or things like that. But anything that could constitute an invasion of personal privacy (or could potentially be some type of threat to any individual) is strictly forbidden on this list. The penalty for this is ONE warning-- ONE. If it happens again, that person is permanently unsubscribed from this list. If you have any question over what you're posting, and whether it violates this rule, please email either one of us. 11. And last, but not least, we reserve the right to deny subscription (new, renewed, or continued) to the list for any individual(s). IF YOU'RE SUBSCRIBED TO THE REGULAR BUFFY LIST AND WISH TO CHANGE TO DIGEST: You need to unsubscribe from the Buffy list, and resubscribe to the digest. Send a message to majordomo@xmission.com In the body of the message, put unsubscribe buffy Then, send a second message to majordomo@xmission.com In the body of the message, put subscribe buffy-digest You'll go through the same approval process that you got when you subbed to the regular Buffy list. If you're subscribed to the digest version, and want to change to regular mail, do the opposite-- unsub from buffy-digest, and resub to buffy. sah (romana@mindspring.com) & Jill Kirby (jtkirby@mcs.com) Listowners, Buffy Mailing List ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 10:30:44 -0500 (CDT) From: templar Subject: Re: BUFFY: Body parts episode On Mon, 29 Sep 1997, Wendy wrote: > Are we sure Angel can't ..um.. .fulfill... Then again, maybe that demonic presense is all that's keeping Angel's body from showing his true age: 241! The title of the Faulkner work is either Absalom, Absalom! or Oh, Absalom! or something equally plaintive, although recalling its plot would require that I turn to the battered collection of Cliff's Notes sitting in my parents' closet. Which leads me to my observation of how very brown and destitute everything vampire-related looks this season. Like that warehouse which is quite sepia in its coloration, or all the long-haired vamps who look like their dressed in burlap. I'm calling it the Okie-vamp look, as it seems to be a homage to Steinbeck's the Grapes of Wrath (Steinbeck and Faulkner being spiritual if not literal cousins in their ability to pinpoint the desperation of poverty, although Steinbeck better observes the rules of complex sentence construction and avoids run-ons and florid language {which Faulker--bless his pointed little head--does not and which this post is rapidly becoming]) Could it be perhaps an inadvertant reference by Whedon to the emotional poverty left by the Master's death? As if the Undead Gravy Train has at last reached its terminus, leaving the downtrodden vampires to fend for themselves in a world that seeks to exploit them as cheap labor? Now I'm just being silly. Vampires don't need to breathe, but they can still use their diaphram muscle to move air in and out of their lungs. If not, they couldn't talk; there'd be no air moving through the vocal chords. Although Angel is quite intelligent, I suspect he's still carrying lots of out- moded ideas, such as the concept of `The Breath of Life'. He was born in 1756, and spent 130-140 years as a standard vampire, who probably wouldn't have cared to learn newer human ideas. He's still got a lot of catching up to do, and he just didn't know how CPR really works. He thought Buffy needed the "Living Breath" only Xander could provide to save her life. And as any fan of Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's St. Germain can tell you, there is much you can do that is fulfilling that doesn't involve being "fully functional in all ways." (STTNG: Naked Now flashback! Someone help me!) I think the issue is just chockfull of grey areas until Joss tells us otherwise, so to the circle of hell wherein the undead questions do reside! This whole thread reminds me of that amusing observation that "Sex is all in the head," which garnered the saucy retort, "What organs have you been using?" And while we're on the subject, it strikes me that the question isn't whether Angel is capable of...ahem...performing his husbandly duties, but whether he'd be any good at it. What if we finally do get our "Very Special Episode" and Buffy says, "That's it?" Would Buffy/Angel shippers around the world collectively sigh in disappointment, whilst Xander and Willow or Cordelia light up in the adjacent hotel suite? It seems like a Jossian irony. Yeah, my first reaction to the Anointed One's cool new henchman was also to think of Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom" (I assume that's the reference you mean?). But Faulkner himself took the name from the Biblical moniker of King David's favorite son, who ultimately turned against his father and was killed. It's hard to know exactly which source the name was taken from for the Buffy character. I was wondering at the time if we would see A1 resurrect the Master (more Biblical allusions?) only to rebel against him, requiring he be killed (thus avoiding the aging problem with the kid). I also had a strange image of Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" with A1 and the rest of the Master's old vampire family dragging Master's rotting carcass in an arduous cross-country trip to a special location for resurrection (and if Darla weren't dead, she could get pregnant along the way, etc...). I can't wait till tonight's ep!! Too bad that I have two midterms tomorrow! :( Liz "It'll Put Goosebumps On Your Goosebumps" Valley Magazine June 1997 Pg. 10 Nicholas Brendnon may be a newcomer to the entertainment industry, but after winning a role in the WB Network's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," just about everyone in Hollywood has seen his face--he's plastered larger than life on the show's billboards throughout the greater Los Angeles area. "It's a pretty good-looking mug, don't you think?" he jokes, explaining almost apologetically that the billboards will be coming down soon. Still, he admits all that exposure is enough to make anyone's head spin. "This show came about during my first pilot season, and it's been a big part of my life for the last year," he explains. "In the two-hour pilot, my best friend turns into a vampire, so I know what's going on at the school." While Brendon's character Xander Harris teams up each week with Buffy to fight the forces of evil, he says that his role on the show is really comic relief. "I get a lot of the good lines," he says. A former college baseball player, Brendon says one of the joys of working on the show is he gets to do his own stunts. "I'm pretty athletic, so I really enjoy doing the stunts," he says. "We have a good stunt coordinator, so I don't get a lot of bruises and pain, except for this one time that I took a face plant down a flight of stairs, but that wasn't entirely planned." While Brendon admits he's still mastering his craft, he says working on the series has been a great learning experience. "I'm kind of in school right now," he says. "I ask a lot of questions on the set. I'm always talking to the director or the D.P. (director of photography). But I'm really learning things that they can't teach you in school. Eventually, I want to do film and go the indie route." So how is Brendon dealing with his new-found fame? "I like to swing," he says. "There is this swing set in Venice that overlooks the beach, and you can see the planes take off from LAX. It's a great place to relax. If vampires have no breath they shouldn't even be able to talk, let alone smoke or perform CPR. The act of speaking is accomplished by passing air over the vocal cords, causing them to vibrate. The movements of the mouth, lips and tonque then form the final identifying sounds of the letters, words, etc. This is why we speak when we exhale, and why Christopher Reeve (AKA Superman) has difficulty speaking now that he's on a respirator. Now then, to bring this back to Buffy: CPR is also know as the breath of life. Vampires are known for taking life, not giving or restoring it. Who knows, maybe the air they exhale is so tainted as to cause more harm than good (that whole vampire bad breath thing), but for vocal cord stimulation and cigarette smoking it simply doesn't matter. The only lust a vampire has is for blood. Physically, he is not alive, so he cannot give life. Most vampire lore supports this notion. The way vampires "breed" is by sucking blood. This is how they make their "children." Restoring Angel's humanity is very unlikely, but it would not be the first such attempt. In Dark Shadows, Barnabas has tried to become human again through medical means. Lestat (from the Anne Rice novels) became human for a brief time in Tale of the Body Thief. I wouldn't mind seeing Angel become human before the series ends, but I hope they do it in an original fashion. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 12:15:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Sonja Marie Subject: BUFFY: Website Update - New Urls Hi all, I have added 10 more URLS to my Buffy Links Page at: http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/7728/btvsurls.html There are now 303 pages listed! This is my first time responding to the list and I think the list is great! Its interesting reading what other people have to say about the show. Also: about another message about vampires becoming human again don't forget nick Knight in Forever Knight. He tried to become human again. Also in the last season there was an episode where Janet did become mortal again. it opened up possibilities for Nick. Bingo! I have to admit I am impressed that both you and Jesse Jou (hey, does that rhyme? Ok, maybe not) were thinking along the same lines. And I like the former's point about the "dark" motif. This is an unusual list. > But Faulkner himself took the name from the > Biblical moniker of King David's favorite son, who ultimately turned > against his father and was killed. It's hard to know exactly which > source the name was taken from for the Buffy character. You have a point. There is a strong religious theme throught Buffy, what with all the crosses and such (and, BTW, I thus think "Seventh Heaven," while not perfect, is NOT such a terrible lead-in). While neither the Biblical nor Faulknerian plot matches perfectly, both have similarities. But I think the real reference is to Faulkner's tale: a) Faulkner's characters were also African-American (very unusual at that time); b) the Buffy Absalom used some very quaint phrasing such as "Turn you into jelly" that sounded vaguely Faulknerian, not (to me) Biblical; and, best of all, c) Faulkner's 100th birthday was last week, and that coincidence is just too great for me - the screenwriter or somebody else may have been a one-time English major type (or just a Faulkner fan) sneaking ;) in a timely homage that only those of similar bent would get. Or not. And I'm not sure why something that can be killed by holy things would take a Biblical name, but I don't want to start a brouhaha about *that*. It's true, though, stuff like this is certainly open to interpretation. > I was wondering at the time if we would see A1 resurrect the Master > (more Biblical allusions?) only to rebel against him, requiring he be > killed (thus avoiding the aging problem with the kid). Yes IMO the character was basically wasted, which aroused my suspicions as to why they would go to the trouble of giving him such a quaint name. It seemed unnecessary for such a relatively minor character.... This also seems to extend the theme in this season's episodes of major literary/pop culture allusions. jb "Is it possible to have too much character?" This article is from: The Globe and Mail (Canadian Newspaper) Saturday, September 27, 1997 Arts Section Page C23 **Fashion On The Box** by Rose-Marie Turk ******** "Warner Brothers' BtVS goes in a different fashion direction this season. Cynthia Bergstrom, the new costume designer, says she is looking for "funky young designers," to dress a cast lead by SMG as Buffy. So far, her new designer finds include silk and velvet combinations from L.A.-based Alicia Lawhon. After shopping a mix of stores, such as Fred Segal Melrose and Santa Monica, Barney's Rampage amd Contempo Casuals, Bergstrom's high-end-low-end combinations include Dolce & Gabbana's "interesting" patterned pants with T-shirts from Dollhouse and Juicy & Curiosity. Gellar's role-reluctant vampire fighter and high-school student demands a pants-driven wardrobe that includes Greed Girl's sailor pants. "But she's not going to fight all the time in pants," Bergstrom says, noting the star will also flex her muscles in a Calvin Klein tulip-print wrap skirt and a DKNY baby-pink minidress. Bergstrom may have already found the accessory of the season, at Fred Segal in Santa Monica: a real-cigar-box purse trimmed with glow-in-the-dark lizards, by Annabelle, that "is perfect for my show." ******** Hope ya'll enjoyed this...looking forward to tonight's ep :) fading back into yesterday before tomorrow comes, Randi Toronto, Ontario, Canada Keeper Of Angel's Telephone *what scares you most will set you free that's what the Angel said to me* - Robyn Hitchcock *maybe I'll find some peace tonight in the arms of the Angel* - Sarah McLachlan ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #331 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
