I see a number of problems with this. 1) There's a lot fewer Scouts that there were even 20 years ago; Scouting is no longer a part of most American boys socialization. 2) Because of fear of pedophiles (some get through anyway) , Scouting is fairly heavily supervised. It would take a hefty number of adults either _totally_ clueless, or on close cahoots, to get this past the safeguards. On the toher hand, this _is_ Sunnydale .... 3) Most Scouts don't have the very closed social circle cults require; they associate with their family, with schoolmates, and with other non-Scouts. Reality check: when was the last time you heard about a whole troop of Scouts doing something evil? > Now I'm the one who wants some clarification! Do you mean > that you see Xander on the road to going postal? It seemed > like the whole frat/rich boy notion just rubbed him the > wrong way. Remember Xander's speech about how "when I have power, and prestige, and money ... they'll still have more."? Except as things are going, Xander _isn't_ going to have any of those things. Cordelia's crack about his pizza-delivery career hurts, because she's nailed him dead-center ... and he knows it. Xander comes across as intelligent (though not well- educated) and ambitious. But he's also got a bad case of "I want to be liked" (notice how as soon as he started chatting up the babes at the party he forgot all about Buffy?) as well as an abusive past (Willow: "... on account of he beat you up every day for five years?" (School Hard)). So yes, I can see Xander going postal. I can also see him becoming the kind of petty bureaucratic tyrant one currently associates with IRS agents or DMV clerks. Pity, because he's basically a nice person. Sure the fraternity rubbed him the wrong way ... but he'd join in a second if they asked. Personally, I think that our country has some serious drug problems that will not be taken care of with a prohibitive program. The war on drugs and slovenly propaganda such as "choose life" and "just say no" tell me *nothing* about why I should avoid drugs. Also, the 80s "war on drugs" did much to point to the evils of "hard core drugs" like cocaine and pot (though I would say that marijuana really ain't all that bad), but it did very little to educate and include alcohol and tobacco into the mix. (Can we say, driven on campaign money?) I'm a big fan of red wine, cloves, and the occasional hallucination, but I recognize that this is not for everybody and I'm not about to go out and try to convert people to "my ways" like some self-righteous Puritans might. The thing that I would caution Buffy creators and Buffy watchers of is that the introduction of elements, such as the effects of alcohol and smoking, is as much propaganda as a public service announcement from the President of the United States. When Buffy takes that drink -- she *is* underage, you know -- she is buying into all the commonly-held beliefs of alcohol and "(im)maturity." glee - ------ Xander: To read makes our speaking English good. - "I Robot, You Jane" Buffy the Vampire Slayer ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 12:32:04 -0500 (CDT) From: -aMy*mAcE- Subject: Re: BUFFY: My Reptile Boy Comments So, uh, what frat are you in? ;) Amy, who, by the way, loved that there were so many great songs in this ep. m_c_0339@mtsu.edu "The basis of optimisim is sheer terror." Too bad they had to be psycho cult leaders... Cordelia telling Buffy how to dress and act at the pasty. LOL. That scene was hilarious...Willow's world being all askew from Buffy lieing. Maybe this Willow love is contagious but I love her. I find it hard to believe there was a time when she annoyed the heck out of me. Now she's one of my fave characters, and my love for her just grew when she gave it to Angel and Giles. I was so happy- I mean somebody had to wake them up. GO WILLOW!! Loved having Xander, Buffy and willow walking in on Giles' moment with the knife/sword. All I was thinking is- wow, Giles could be the next slayer. He seems to be able to hold his own. Okay- Xander in boxers. I thought I'd have to just keep rewinding Nightmares to see that again. Oh thank you Joss- thank you. Hello- Cordelia hugging Angel. Man, she wants him bad. She's all over any hot guy around. I was waiting for Buffy to step up and kick her butt with a line like, "Get away from my man" okay- maybe not that line but close. And then, what was up with that nerd guy bringing her food at the end. I know she was traumatized by the college guy experience, but I doubt even Cordelia would look at a guy like that. She has pretty high standards. I mean, remember how she used to treat Jesse. I'm sure under normal circumstances this guy would have gotten the same treatment. Some Fave Lines: X: "Hop off the outlaw train Willow, before you land us all in jail" W: " It's the non relationship drink of choice. It's not a date, it's a caffeinated beverage." C: " I just know your pizza delivery career will take you to so many exciting places." B: "When you kiss me I want to die" (I think this line really gave an indepth look into Buffy's feelings for Angel) C: "Oh Buffy, it's like we're sisters, with really different hair." W: "She has a date with Angel, isn't that exciting." X: "I'm elated" X: "Wow, Wow, rewind. Since when do they have orgies and why aren't I on the mailing list." C: "hy do they park so darn close to you." W: "She's 16 going on 40...and you, you're gonna live forever, you don't have time for a cup of coffee." X: "Okay, this is the guy you want to party with." X: "That's for the wig, that's for the bra....that's for the makeup, and that's for the last 16& 1/2 years." X: "Angel, Angel, Angel. Does every conversation we have have to come around to that freak. Hey man, how you doing." Definately and A+ episode. It delivered much more than I expected. BTW- why at the end, does Angel address Buffy and Xander and not Willow. He always seems to acknowledge Xander. maybe they have this weird Buddy connection- with there mutual love for Buffy. They're competitors but I see a bond there. Is it just me or what. That's all for now, thanx for listening to my ramblings. I'd like to believe that Xander would turn out okay, but as you noted, the boy has some pretty serious issues. In line with your observation about his need to be liked, he develops serious feelings for Ampata in one episode and an episode later is still vociferously jealous of any guy who looks at Buffy crosswise. I think I like this take on neurotic Xander; it smacks of reality. I agree he's still a nice guy, but he's also very self-involved, and the flaws make the character. Spoilers are contained below What I found most interesting about this episode was that Reptile boy was a secondary story, actually it was the third story arc. The first was "Buffy and responsibility", the second was "Buffy & Angel", then it was the reptile boy story. That's what I think makes Buffy so unique, most shows would have made the whole show about reptile boy. But, the character development would suffer. I liked the opening with the trio sitting around watching bad-tv with nothing to do, been there done that. Welcome to Sunnydale, home to the world's largest graveyard. That graveyard must make up the entire town. Giles was in rare form with the responsibility speech early, he's a strong man, I think anyone else would have given into Buffy's pout. I guess hanging out on the steps with Xander and Willow is Buffy's way of rebeling. This episode did answer one question, what happens in a couple of years when the gang leaves High school. Answer: they can all stay in Sunnydale and go to college. Most places College seniors trolling for High School juniors can be locked up. The graveyard scene with Angel seemed a little repetitious of SAR. Can't they fight someplace other than a graveyard. Yes, Angel is 241, but he keeps making the same mistakes over and over with Buffy. When she walks away and he begins his "how dangerous it is" speech that was some serious URST. I took it as "look we might be out sometime, and I might vamp out and hurt you". Buffy's line "when you kiss me I want to die" left me a little stumped, I didn't know if she meant that in a good way or a bad way. Xander's running commentary on Buffy's fight with Angel was funny. Anybody else think that Willow's "CORDELIA" line was very simliar to the way Xander always says "Angel". "Frying pan/Fire", ha. I'm thinking now that maybe Xander has his own "slayer sense", he didn't like Angel and he turned out to be a vamp, he hated these guys and they were freaks. Plus his own talent of dating the paranormal. Next time Xander gets a date, Buffy can just save herself some time, and go ahead and slay her. Buffy lied to Giles, WOW! I was stunned, shocked "cockeyed". I did like the scene outside the library the look of guilt on her face was great. The scene in the lounge were Cordelia starts to teach Buffy the do's and don'ts, I think she would rather be fighting vampires. I loved Aly and Nick in that scene their timing was wonderful. In fact the whole episode those two were right on mark when they were together. "catch an orgy", "If its on early", ROTFLOL. I thought Cordy told her not to wear black, but she looked good. I couldn't believe that Xander came in a window. I wanted to laugh at Xander with the wig and bra bit, but I started to feel so sorry for him and I almost couldn't. I was surprised that they had Buffy actually take a drink, I figured they would use an old "its only fruit punch" line. With Buffy, considered a role model for many young girls it was a bold step. But, I assume they wanted to show the results of drinking, being eaten by a demon snake. Anyone been to a frat party would know that they wouldn't have picked Xander out of line up if they had to. Never have Willow keep a secret, I almost hurt myself watching her trying to keep the truth from Giles. But, I was impressed by the little outburst at Giles and Angel. Willow has a lot of guts when it comes to other people. "how do you shave" ha. I don't know why Cordy was freaking in they pit, you would think she be used to it by know. Was I the only one that about every four seconds was whispering "break the chains". Why did they have Xander knock on the door, couldn't Angel just have kicked it in. I did like Xander's fight scene "this is for the wig...". I expected for Tom to end up eaten by the reptile boy, or at least fall into the pit, figured it would be poetic justice. Giles and Buffy at the end, it would have been fun if he let her twist in the wind a little bit. But I was glad to see he realized (with Willow's help) that he was pushing to hard. I guess Cordy learned her lesson about older guys, I guess she will get tired of younger guys, and set her sights on Xander. Neat, to see the frat boys paid for their crimes, something we haven't always seen in Sunnydale. After the "Angel..that freak", I guess Xander will be going to buy that collar with the little bell. Angel's "lets have coffee" was a little goofy for him, when Buffy walks away the first thought was of WSWB, but that little grin she gives walking away was priceless. I enjoyed this episode, I thought the timing among the cast was great, several funny lines. Special kudos to Alyson and Nick. Cordelia was back to standard style. I wasn't sure about the 3rd straight episode of "Buffy: my life sucks" story lines. I thought it was also a little weird that last week, she canceled plans with Willow and Xander because of Slaying, yet this week she's willing to lie to Giles so she can go out with Cordelia to a frat party. It also appears every week we get a new Xander, lover, fighter, goofball, and slacker every episode he seems to change. Also, all of last week's "maybe a Xander and Buffy connection" was gone. And, what is with all the coffee references, I didn't know this was Friends now. I don't know of that many teens that drink coffee. But, the Bronze appears to have a coffee bar. BTW: nice commercial with SMG introducing IKWYDLS, but despite the film there are no cliffs are rocks on the beaches of North Carolina I live here. I'm not sure if this is in other vampire lore but in The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice any hair the vampires had when they were given the dark gift stayed the way it was. An example is in "The Vampire Lestat" Gabrielle(Lestat's mother who he made into a vampire) had extremely long hair whan she was made. But once when she tried to cut it off to look like a boy it grew back while she was sleeping. So to bring it back to the buffyverse vampire world Angel wouldn't have to shave because he was clean shaven when he was made and any hair would stay. Since the titles aren't shown in the opening credits, maybe they're more like `working titles', just something for the cast & crew to call the show, instead of having to use the numbers? Come on!!!! Please. Yes, most high school kids probably would but I knew people in High School, College and older that chose not to drink for various reasons. For Buffy there's also the fact that she the slayer and "big on the responsibility thing". I actually rather liked the way they treated it. No preaching, no will she or won't she. Xander and Cordy both seemed quite willing to take a drink. They seem to have hit a very nice, believable middle ground. Some people were drinking and having fun while others became obnoxious (the Hulk). Drinking wasn't overly glorified or overly shunned. I think you'd be suprised at how many people are not sexually involved. As for her smarts, that seems like an arguement for her being a vigin. She seventeen, not a slut. > But not wanting to drink??? Come on!!!! Please. Again, please don't sterotype. Not all teenagers drink. Alcohol is an aquired taste for some, and they can't stand the taste. Others don't drink for health reasons. Some don't drink for moral reasons. Althletes often don't drink during the season. Some kids simply don't like the loss of control. Some simply don't like breaking the law. Maybe you should stop listening to the media, and start listening to the kids. They just might suprise you. > And the lesson that the writers give to the audience.....have one drink and > you'll end up drugged, almost raped by a frat guy and then taken to the > basement to be sacrificed. That's a fairly unrealistic tax on just one > drink. Actually, rape is a risk withe drinking. Teenagers simply don't have the knowledge neccisary to recognize their own limits when it comes to alocohol. This puts them at risk for things like date rape, car accidents due to DWI, and alcohol poisoning. These are the reasons that it's illegal for teenagers to drink. > Please...alcohol has taken a bum rap. It is a vice that can be handled > responsibly. But teenagers don't have the neccisary responsiablity. Nor do many adults. The fact of the matter is, if alcohol were to go before the FDA for approval, it wouldn't pass. It's simply too dangerous. Historical, and public acceptance are all that keeps it around. It's a drug, plain and simple, and as prone to abuse as anything else. More so, since so many people are quick to dismiss it as harmless. Alcohol kills brain cells. It kills liver cells. It kills. ObBuffy: Quips and Quibbles on BtVS Vampireism gives a new meaning to "biting the hand that feeds you". Or would that be neck? And have there ever been vampires above the artic circle? Six monthes of night, sure... But what about the six monthes of sun? Has anyone noticed that all the guys who turn out to be disasters for Buffy's social life are blond? Owen, Tom, Richard... And Xander and Angel both have dark hair.... - -Terrie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 1997 12:44:17 -0700 From: Lisa Rose Subject: Re: BUFFY: Prohibition in Sunnydale?? Were you unlucky enough to have caught 7th Heaven's "marijuana" episode that preceded Buffy a week or two ago? Finding their son in possession of a joint (though of course it was *forced* upon him because he doesn't really smoke) was akin to discovering he'd joined a human-sacrifice college fraternity. ObBuffy: I'm still not sure that Joss is really propagandizing against smoking and alcohol. He may be playing with our heads, with tongue-in-cheek satire of Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign and D.A.R.E., and other programs whose approaches (though not necessarily their goals) make them easy targets for ridicule, IMHO. That sign "Drunk Drivers Don't Always Die" showing a disfigured man was too much! (in a dark humor way?). These messages aren't accidental or coincidence. The only question is of Joss's intent, I suppose. Lisa PS, the allusion to "roofies" (the "date rape" knockout drug likely slipped into Buffy's and Cordy's drinks) was more chilling than satiric for me, however, because those things in particular really freak me out (I had a roofie helplessness nightmare last night because of this episode). PPS, For those who say that frats were unfairly stereotyped in this ep, that is to some extent true. I hung out a lot with a non-traditional type frat in college composed of mostly sweet, gentle guys (as were many other frats). However, during the same four years, two frats were banished from campus for group rape (one of these also being charged with kidnapping and abduction). ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #375 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
