Someone else has already suggested 'compound interest'. Here are my two favorite possibilities: Angel could also have acquired small properties as "hideouts" shortly after he was cursed and came to the US, using money acquired in any number of ways (including night jobs and takings from pre-curse victims); it wouldn't take a lot of cash. He could even have homesteaded some of them a century ago. Houses, say, an hour's horseback ride outside of New York, Chicago, Atlanta, etc, etc... Isolated by the standards of the day, but by the middle of this century, they'd be primo real estate, worth a fortune either as resale or rental. Or he could have bought IBM at 1 3/8 a share, US Steel at 2 1/4, and Xerox at 3 5/16, etc., and be living on his dividend checks.... He'd have been in a primo position to buy stocks *really* cheap about 1929. And if he did have, say, a night-watchman's job back then (think about how effective he'd be!) he wouldn't have to worry about buying food with the money so he'd have more to invest. Banking: ATMs, checks, credit cards (trust me, credit card companies _aren't_ picky). Before ATMs? Suppose it's 1980: you're the branch manager of the Rebello Drive office at the First National Bank of Sunnydale and you get a letter: I have recently made certain investments in the Sunnydale vicinity and am considering buying a vacation home in the area. In anticipation of this, and to facilitate my visits io the area I am prepared to deposit $250,000 at FNB Sunnydale. If your service is satisfactory much larger deposits are possible. Privacy concerns will require certain unusual arrangements Regarding the account. Nothing is illegal, and all Extraordinary costs may be billed. I will call you at your office one week from the date of this letter to arrange an evening appointment. Angel Kilkenny Are you going to take that call? Are you going to do anything within reason Mr. Kilkenny wants? Including taking peresonal supervision of the account? As to shopping and delivery: once you have money available, custom local delivery arrangements (for an fee) are commonplace. He can buy mail-order; he can buy from the Web. You know, I was thinking that the VAMPIRE'S belife in them was what caused them to work. Like when a small child falls down and you clap, they dont think it hurts, but if you freak out, then suddenly they're wounded horribly. Not quite the same concept, but you get what I mean I hope. However, this theory doesn't jive with sceens like when the vampires are digging up the Masters bones and they say "The ground is consecrated - It Burns!" because they didn't know that it had had Holy Water dumped all over it until their hands started burning. I don't thnk it's a bad theory. I think it explains all of the available evidence, and allows us to make predictions about future behavior. (Which, in the technical sense, makes it a good - - though possibly inaccurate - theory.) The digging vampires felt the senseation (a real phenomenon) associated with the holy water. Their mind promptly told them this would extremely painful, to the extent of causeing physical damamge. This theory also explains the scene at the beginning of "Nightmares" where The Master grabs hold of the cross. Bring tougher/smarter than the average vampire ("Hey look, Boo-Boo, a walking pic-a-nic basket!" "I don't know, Yogi, I don't think the Slayer's gonna like it if you ....") I think that they may work simply because the items are considered Holy. This is different I know, but if you look at Highlander they can be safe on any Holy Ground. Immortals dont have to believe in that particular religion. Perhaps in the Buffyverse it works the same way. Any item considered Holy can ward off a vampire. Perhaps the only reason we've only seen crosses and holy water so far is because that is what is traditionally accepted as hurting vampires. Vampire myth and legend doesnt provide for Jewish or Hindu or any other type of religious symbol to ward off vampires, at least not that I have seen. Basically, to recap conclusions this list has formed in the past, there were always those who were advocates of the inherent ability of holy symbols, more often specifically the ability of crosses (though the possibilities of other tools of faith have arisen), and those who were advocates of the user's faith. I was originally a patron of the latter opinion, but some people brought up good points and evidence about the former opinion that I hadn't noticed (i.e. the burn mark Angel received from his 'closeness' to Buffy at the end of Angel). Consequently, there was never really any definitive conclusion drawn about this entire subject, but like a true undead question, many topics spawned off of it like hungry locusts feeding on...well, I won't go any further, but you get my point (do you?) I'm going to sleep. }:)> Chris 2 **Keeper of Xander's Cool** **BABS Loremaster** ===================================================================== BABS Homepage: http://www.porter.ucsc.edu/~weasel/BABS/babs.htm ===================================================================== "There are no happy endings, because nothing ever ends." - - Peter S. His hair looked better then. Funny, I feel completely different about this. I liked Buffy's hair *much* better last season (it's totally obvious that her new hairstyle has something to do with the promotion of her forbidden romance with Angel, but I won't further discuss that), and I like Xander's hair better this season than last season. Perhaps I'm finally fully sinking into the Gen X alternateen preference after living at a college with so many similar haircuts as his for over two years. In the preview of next wk's ep, there's this procession of demons walking down the street and Spike is at the the head of that procession. I did it on slo-mo so many times and I'm sure it's Spike. So we get to look forward to seeing him in this one :) Also, it looks like that Angel gets to be the main hero in the ep not Buffy. That's nice for a one time change. You're missing something here. Every illegal (and legal but immoral) act, every deviation from the "straight and narrow", Angel commits brings the demon closer to regaining control. That's probably part of what's going on with him and Buffy: according to recent information the age of sexual consent in California is 16. Not only is Buffy the Slayer, and rather immature (by Angel's standards), but she's also legally jail-bait .... I think Angel is being very careful to live almost all of his life in a very "normal" manner and not just because it draws less attention. He'll be in the Halloween episode, the "Lie to Me Episdoe" where one of Buffy's ex-boyfriends tries to sell her to him in exchange for being made a vampire. and then two other episodes, which sources tell me is a two-parter. Hopefully they'll leave his death open enough so that he could camoe back later, but most likely not. Le Sigh. I for one am expecting that Angel kills him, making it a whole Father/Son thing rather than Buffy killing him. - --Livia RHM#2.1, JitterDoug extrordinare, GASPer & Slavemaster's Head Wench ListMom, roar@userhome.com, spike@mindwell.com, roafanfic@userhome.com Guardian of: All things Longinus, Spike's Inner Child & Glas' Spooky voice ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 09:18:20 -0500 (CDT) From: Anime Nut Subject: BUFFY: More new episode titles (SPOILERS) Spoiler space just for a few measly words I can't imagine the reason for this space being needed for two episode titles Hey, everybody! I just got back from the YTV page, and they have the titles for episodes 8 and 9 of this season. Many of us already know that episode 7 is titled "Lie to Me". Here's the new info: Episode 8: "The Dark Age" Episode 9: "What's My Line (Part 1)" There aren't any episode synopses for either ep, so that's all I know. I'll jst say two words: `compound interest'! This reminds me of a line from Douglas Adam's book, Restuarant at the End of the Universe, where it says something like if you put a penny in a bank account in your time and then travel forward in time to the end of the universe and the restaurant at Milliway's you will have enough interest earned to afford your meal. Sorry, I just thought it was amusing. ObBuffy: I, too, wonder how Angel supports himself. Of course, it's not to say that he couldn't work nights as a secruity guard or the graveyard (no pun intended here!) shift at 7-11 or something like that. Of course, I have a feeling it's one of those TV questions we are just suppose to ask but not think too much about like "Where does Captain Kirk go to the bathroom?" (And you thought he went all of those landing parties just for the chance to meet women!)
