It was full of great lines and scenes and it just seemed like the cast was having a ball celebrating the one "holiday" which they seem to celebrate every week, all year round! I gotta say, one of my favorite scenes is right when the costumes take over the gang and Willow, Xander, and Buffy are standing there staring at these attacking demons and WIllow says, "Buffy? What do we do?" and THUMP! The Buffster faints! How UN-Buffy was that? :) > 1) Nick and Sarah just weren't convincing as their alternate personas -- > Nick didn't _sound_ like a soldier to me, and SMG _really_ didn't sound like > an 18th century lady. Despite the goodness of the episode, I'd have to agree with this. Um...I think when Buffy was running through the alley was as close to being a noblewoman as she got. And Xander was just....I don't know. I mean, he looked good, but just wasn't as militarily convincing. And GO WILL! Hehehe...she took over the situation and broke out of her shell. Not to say I want her wearing those kind of outfits for the rest of the season, but at least she's showing more confidence in herself. But, I'm confused, in the previews from TV Guide or something, they say Willow is a "no-so-friendly" ghost. She seemed pretty friendly to me. I was expecting her to become an assertive young lady ghost. Oh well... That's my two cents! His actions were a 'calling card' literally (at the end) and figuratively by the spell. My take was that he wants Giles 'back' and what better way to get the old Giles back than to bring out his personal demons. Even his not fighting back was calculated. If he had fought back, Giles would have been justified in defending himself. However by not fighting he elicited Giles' sadistic tendencies, rather like, "See, you still are the same Ripper from the past." Clever chap, Ethan Raine. I could see that. Gotta say Giles was one of the best things in this episode. Could it have been something to do with the fact that it was Halloween which is supposed to be a "night off" for the vampires? However, I get the feeling more that Spike is really testing Buffy at this point, trying to find our what her strengths and weaknesses are. After all, he did have the vampire film her battle to study her fighting technique. He has defeated at two slayers, so I would think he's honed his technique over the years. Maybe he's playing a cat and mouse type of game now to find out her strengths and weaknesses both on and off the battlefield. I see his running away last nite as realizing he's fighting a losing battle and running away so he can fight another day. I do think that except for a bit of tension at the end, the Spike was wasted in this episode. I loved him in School Hard, and though he did a great job there. However, I think any vampire could have been there at the end to be threatening Buffy. Just my two cents.... This is a little long, but here goes: Charisma Carpenter, who plays the deliciously nasty Cordelia Chase on WB's BtVS, says she gets a lot of fan mail demanding that her character be a little less, well, nasty. "People ask me when am I going to be nicer to Willow and Buffy," Charisma says of her character. Cordelia is a way stuckup Sunnydale High School cheerleader who vampire slayer Buffy and her buds love to hate, but always end up rescuing from vampires and assorted ghouls. "I'm victimized a lot so Buffy can save me," she says. Charisma is OK with her character's basic meanness because, she says, a softer, gentler Cordelia wouldn't be funny. "She's insulting, but she's also very entertaining." Charisma, who was named for "a really tacky Avon perfume," actually kind of likes playing Cordelia because it has given her an opportunity to shine. She credits her success and the show's popularity with teens to producer Joss Whedon. "It's amazing how well he knows his characters. He has Willow, Buffy, and all the cast, inside of him," she says. "And he's a genius at finding new and interesting ways to say things teens can pick up on and relate to." And when it comes to one-liners, Cordelia gets some of the best. Especially wicked are the verbal arrows she slings at Buffy and her guy sidekick, Xander. Maybe you caught this zinger in a recent rerun: Cordelia's thanking them for saving her life when a popular guy walks by and asks if she's now hanging with them. Her reply: "You think I felt like joining that social leper party?" Ouch. Wonder if the tension between Cordelia and Xander could lead to romance? Charisma says she doesn't know. But there's definitely no romantic interest in Charisma's real life. "I'm free," she admits. Well, not entirely. She's very attached to her two golden retrievers, Hobie and Sidney. "They follow me around and they're very sweet," she says. "They're my companions." Like in a Hollywood fairy tale, Charisma was discovered while working as a waitress in an L.A. restaurant. "I was studying to be a teacher, but this very persistent guy persuaded me to hook up with a commercial agent," she says. Although that connection resulted in her making more than 20 TV commercials, she prefers the steady job of a TV series and hopes the success of the show leads to other offers. In the meantime, she's happy being hated - as Cordelia, that is. Whether she's scheming to get Angel, Buffy's vampire boyfriend, or flitting off to get her legs waxed, Cordelia is one of a kind. I snatched the newspaper right out of a co-workers hands when I saw this. Last night's show was great. So many things to look forward to, especially concerning Giles and Oz and Willow. And finally having Angel and Buffy together alone - whew - my TV was smokin'! Can't wait to hear from others and what you thought. One of my faves! Why was Willow referred to in all the episode descriptions as a "not so friendly" ghost? Unless they meant that she was taking charge or something. But I almost expected her to be mean! Glad she wasn't though! I loved it when Buffy fainted! So not Buffy!! I would have loved to see Principal Snyder dress up for Halloween! As Quark perhaps! Willow looked incredible!! Loved her Xena line! Did anyone else thing she looked a tiny bit like Gabrielle in that outfit? A brief appearance by Oz!!! Go Oz! You gotta love a guy who is so infatuated with Willow! "Who is that girl?" I think I'm really gonna like him! I'm disappointed that we didn't get any reaction from Xander on Willow's real costume! I would have loved a delayed response from him after he became Xander again! I think my favorite scene was when Willow walked through the wall in the library and scared Giles half to death! Too funny! Angel and Buffy....sigh. Giles past....I hope this isn't just a few episode arc where we find out about how different he used to be and then he goes back to his normal, bumbling self. No matter what we find out, I hope it's incorporated into his character. Spike and Dru. I am so intrigued by these two! Can't wait to find out more! I wish they could stick around a few more seasons! Cordy and Xander....well I'm convinced. Cordelia is drawn to the take charge type of guys. This was evident in WttH with Jesse, and I think it was pretty evident in the Halloween ep. Did you see the look she gave Xander when he put his jacket on her? I really think there is a future between these two. Maybe she's drawn to him because he doesn't hang on her every word. Also, coincidence that Cordelia was running by Buffy's house? I don't think so! She was probably looking for her favorite slayer to save her!! Did anyone else think that Buffy would try to find a steak when Angel asked for a stake? (But then again, how would she know what a refrigerator was?) Why is everyone so surprised that Buffy's mom wasn't home? She does have a life! And Buffy is 16/17. She can be home alone! Only two vamps holding Angel back when Buffy was in trouble? (while about 4 held Xander back?) I don't think so! I think it would take an army of vampires to keep Angel from saving Buffy! I thought Janus was a curious choice for the power invoked in this episode, although the significance of October 31 (the end of the month) would kind of play into a dark aspect for this figure. Personally, given the "riot of the tipsy bacchnals" (points if you can tell me where this comes from and what it refers to, OFFLIST) character of last night's episode, I would have been interested in seeing Dionysos as god of the day. I must also confess that I found Ethan Raine to be a very disappointing villain. Probably because I last saw the actor who plays him in an execrable episode of Baywatch Nights, playing an evil sorcerer whom David Hasselhoff defeats with his intrinsic demi-godhead. If David Hasselhoff can beat him, I exhibit no surprise that Little Rupert did as well. Furthermore, the man looks and carries himself like he should be choreographing Cats or some equally banal Broadway extravaganza. And by this, I don't mean that Ethan came across in a queeny manner (although how many more effete British magicians will we be forced to endure in American entertainment and where's David Warner when you really need him?), just that he reminds me of an evil, and substantially less talented, Bob Fosse. When he snarls "It's showtime," I expected him to follow it with a four count "5-6-7-8!" However, I was very intrigued by the Giles-related revelations, and, as Diane E. noted, it does place his trying to take on the Master in PG in a new light. It also offers a legitimate post-hoc explanation why he may have been knocked out so many times last season. Perhaps, if he were left to his own devices and conscious, would we have seen Ninja Giles come to the rescue more than once? And Willow, ah, Miss Rosenberg, that midriff. sigh. From the collection of miscellaneous accessories for the Barbie dolls by Mattel. Many of the Barbie add-ons were "dream" things. Principal Snyder: Tossing eggs, keying cars, bobbing for apples ... Tossing eggs is simply the Halloween practice of throwing raw eggs. Keying cars is a rather more vicious act, using a key to scratch the paint of on a car. Not a practice that I often associate with normal Halloween pranks, but obviously Principal Snyder has a low opinion of Buffy. Bobbing for apples on the other hand, is often associated with Halloween but is not a prank. Rather, it's a game where the contestants attempt to bite an apple that is floating in a tub of water, without using their hands. The practice is certainly innocent fun when compared to the rest. Perhaps Principal Snyder is showing just how out of touch he is. Buffy: Gosh, I'd love to sign up, but I recently developed carpal tunnel syndrome and can tragically no longer hold a flashlight. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes pain or tingling in the fingers, hand or wrist. Recently the ailment has become generally known as a type of repetitive stress injury that can be cause by typing. Xander: I figured it'd be a big, old vamp scare-a-palooza. Likely a play on Lollapalooza, one of the first, biggest, and best known of the current, annual, summer music festivals. Cordelia: Like a care bear with fangs. Popular in the early to mid 1980's care bears are a series of cute, themed stuffed animals. Ethan: I feel quite moved to make you a deal you can't refuse. Reminiscent of the line from the Godfather movie "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse." In the movie the line carries with it an implied threat. Though it's not clear at the time, Ethan's offer actually proves threatening to Buffy. Willow: She couldn't have dressed up like Xena. Unlike Buffy's choice of helpless, 18th century noble woman, Xena is a strong, fighter. Most commonly known from the current television series Xena: Warrior Princess, Xena and Buffy are often compared as strong female characters. Cordelia: I was just attacked by Jo Jo the dog faced boy. A reference to the a side-show freak from the early 1900s. - -- John Nestoriak * "It's the non-relationship drink Software Engineer * of choice. She was beyond bitca. Her line to Buffy about her being the slayer of dating made me cry out. It was tops. Not to mention all her ploys to get Angel to notice her. It was great. I also liked how, even though she was a bitca she still retained her new found respect for Buffy which was evident in her patience for Buffy's "amnesia".... well, I guess we all know now that she didn't know Angel was a vampire... LOL...living with his parents. Too funny. I'm still not sure how I feel about this new side of Giles. I, of course, was cheering "You Go boy" when he was kicking his friend but he was too cold. It freaked me out but I am certainly dieing of curiosity as to what exactly his secret is. Who was that guy...what is Giles hiding. Spike was in top form....I loved when he was about to bite Buffy. Damn, Xander rocked when he was beating up the monsters and vamps. And boy did he look good in that tank top. I almost fainted (alittle melodramatic... but come on, he was hot!!! ooh baby) Willow also looked great and I loved her almost run ins with Oz. They are most definatly gonna be a couple, I can see it now and I for one am very happy. One thing that bothered me about this ep is that all the questions I thought would be answered, or secrets revealed, didn't occur. We did not really learn of Giles great secret but just got a taste (of course, I'm sure more is to come and that's good- I like the suspense of not knowing) and why was there all this talk of Angels' old girlfriend. Unless this all was revealed in the first five minutes of the show (which I missed) then all that speculation and spoilers for the past two weeks were wrong. Maybe I missed something and should watch it again but I don't think so. All in all I loved the ep and thought it left us with much to look forward to in future eps. BTW- Angel and Buffy's last scene together- talk about sweet and heart aching. It was great to see them finally together. Well, in the Pack episode he was punched out by surpise. He didn't have a real chance to fight back. I think I can reconcile that scene with the new Giles we now see in this ep. Obviously there's alot about Giles we don't know, and I for one can't wait to learn more PoizonIvy: Vampire Kisser Keeper of Xander's Wardrobe Keeper of Buffy, Willow, and Xander's Talent Show Togas Keeper of Ampata's Mummy Seal Proud NOSer WL(SP)/Spikette Member of the DC/East Coast Buffy Crew FOK! ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #399 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
