Buffy was suffering from post traumatic stress. The creative people have to be given credit for dealing with this issue instead of just sweeping it under the rug (and having our girl appear 1st ep new season like nothing is wrong), they chose to show how the encounter with the Master messed with her head, BIG time. She *died*. Slaying possibly causing one's premature death is no longer a vague concept. She did and could again (for good) "die young and stay pretty." My curiosity was piqued by re-watching When She Was Bad and the resulting discussion which again compared Buffy's behavior to someone who was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. So a little web surfing and this is what I've come up with. An excellent, readable article is at http://www.dartmouth.edu/dms/ptsd/Overview.html from which all quotes are taken. These are the guidelines for diagnosing PTSD: "the "A" stressor criterion specifies that a person has been exposed to a catastrophic event involving actual or threatened death or injury". Well the Buffster passes this with flying colors. PG included her actual death if even for just a minute. The B criterion is "intrusive recollection". The traumatic event "retains its power to evoke panic, terror, dread, grief, or despair as manifested in daytime fantasies, traumatic nightmares, and psychotic reenactments known as PTSD flashbacks". Buffy suffers the traumatic nightmare of the master's return and the "mental image" of the master when exposed to his empty grave site. Again textbook compliance with the criteria. The C "avoidant/numbing" criterion has the victim attempting "to reduce the likelihood that they will either expose themselves to traumamimetic stimuli, or if exposed, will minimize the intensity of their psychological response". Buffy doesn't run away from the vampires but is clearly not looking forward to meeting the master again. Also the victim will "separate the cognitive from the emotional aspects of psychological experience and perceive only the former" - Buffy's I can handle it non-emotional response to Angel and Giles' warning. And of course "emotional anesthesia that makes it extremely difficult for people with PTSD to participate in meaningful interpersonal relationships" - hence pushing away those closest to her. "Symptoms included in the "D" or hyperarousal criterion" include insomnia, irritability, hypervigilance and startle. Hypervigilance like I'm ready to begin training now and what are they going to throw at me next. Irritability that gets one called a bitka by those closest. The E criterion says that symptoms need to be present for at least a month. The 3 months between PG and WSWB certainly qualifies. The F criterion says "the survivor must experience significant social, occupational, or other distress as a result of these symptoms". Like the kind of social distress that would cause one to consider living in a cave rather than face your friends. Looks like the writers either have a background in psychology or a good enough understanding of human responses that they were able to come up with a text book and IMHO highly realistic response to a traumatic event. Oh, a note of warning: don't play armchair psychiatrist on real live humans. Consult a physician, yadda, yadda. - -- John Nestoriak * "It's the non-relationship drink Software Engineer * of choice. Oh, I don't know. For me, it's not a sexual thing, as much as it is a sensual thing. It's not about, if you'll pardon the expression, bumpin' uglies with the undead. It's about the lure of it all, the frightening seductiveness of a life without conscience, without remorse. I mean, haven't we all wanted to be the monster, just for a little while? There's another side of it, too. Vampires are demons, soulless creatures of the night. They're reckless and animalistic, but also somehow above (if that's the right word) pure sexual passions. I too think the earlier makeup was better. Certainly scarier. Could be that that look was toned down for WML due to the "I didn't even notice" scene. Your body doesn't do ANYTHING by itself. It takes all the supernatural power the demon can muster to keep the body moving and intact at all. Remember how hard it was for Dru to regain her strength (both spiritually and physically) after Prague? It takes a lot to hurt a vamp, but once it's hurt, it's very difficult for it to heal. I was a little curious to see if they would edit that scene with Buffy and her Mom in the car. But, they decided to leave it like it was. It was interesting to compare the season's first episode with what is happening now. Buffy has had no more after-effects from the master after WSWB, least so far. The almost kiss between Xander and Willow is forgotten, with the exception of IMG, there as been no real romantic tension between them at all this season. Course now we have the Xander/Cordelia, and Willow/Oz story lines. Since Oz did try and protect Willow in WMLp2, I no longer wish him a slow death, a quick one will do. Angel and Buffy romance is on tract it appears, they have been on dates and Buffy declared him to be her boyfriend. Xander appears to be over Buffy now, despite him saying so, in WSWB. He has even started to accept Angel, all with the exception of LTM where Xander showed some strong jealousy. Cordelia, since WSWB as become a reserve slayerette, perhaps even a full timer after WMLp2. Little bit of development of the Giles/Jenny relationship, they have dated, even done a possession thing. Course now they could be back at the start. Overall it appears they have tried to pair everyone off, the road may be rocky but they all have partners. This of course is a huge change from the original triangle angst of Buffy,Willow, and Xander, with a little Angel thrown in, creating a square. "There are somethings I can just smell, its like a sixth-sense" "No, that would be one of the five" Still a great line months later. Below is spoilers and speculation spoilers for next weeks episode, * * * * * * * * John Ritter as a guest star, cool now we know the series has arrived. I was happy to see Joyce return, thought perhaps a Vamp had taken her hostage she had been absent for so long. So they have even given Joyce a love interest, to bad Ritter plays a scumbag. I was surprised that Buffy kept the truth about her slaying in her diary. Ritter's character Ted reads it, guess he learned nothing from "Angel". Couldn't believe he struck her, but I loved Buffy's comeback "I was hoping you'd do that", that smacks the heck out of him. The tumble down the stairs was very Jack Tripper, so we know he's alive despite Joyce's declaration he's dead. What is weird about this is that just last week a friend and I, were talking about a way the vamps could get rid of Buffy. We came up with the idea that they could hire someone to dress like a vamp and attack Buffy. She would kill the human, likely goto jail for at least a few years. Thus, the Vamps could party and, no new slayer would be called, because Buffy is alive. (please no Kendra remarks). Actually it came from the rumor that SMG almost attacked a person dressed as a vamp in a theme park who startled her. I'm sure Ted will end up being alive and something strange, why should Joyce get a normal date, when Xander dates giant-bugs, and Mummies. Starting to wonder about Joyce up-stairs, she has no clue about Buffy's life, and she starts dating this SOB. Whoever wrote it should be fired. >> :::cough:::You think it's that bad? Okay, so it was more dark than usual, but still-- <> I didn't see it that way at all; in fact, school was probably the *last* thing on Buffy's mind. At 16, she was given the responsibility for protecting mortals from the undead, fell in love with one herself, possibly watched her previous watcher die (not sure how much of the movie's event's Joss is following here...), and died herself, etc. As if the Master's visage weren't scary enough! One of the points of Buffy's whole " I don't have a normal life " spiel is that she's *always* working--sort of like doctors who are always on call. The linked eps of PG and WSWB are really just showing all of the pressure that built up on her over the first season. Unlike the Slayerettes, she wouldn't be able to take a vacation from danger, even when seized by the impulse to run away. At the point in her life when she should be enjoying her life, she *died.* Then Buffy was brought back to life and killed the Master--only to face the same problems she had always had, instead of living happily ever after. (<--That's partly why I like Buffy.) Psychologically, she could be suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, grieving, repression, or...well, teenage angst;-) <> Assuming that I count as a " young person " here, I've got to say that, aside from the fun/humorous aspects of the show, its evident themes include responsibility, loyalty, personal strength, and courage. Admittedly, younger children can be more impressionable; it's a matter of relation to personal experience. <> Now, that *was* cruel, (not that slapping is a good thing), but understandable. Buffy is a Slayer, but also an adolescent who was forced to grow up much too quickly. Underneath her tough exterior, she's still unsure of what she wants or what to do (that whole " when I kiss you I want to die " scene comes to mind.) She's told herself that she can be a " lone ranger, " but her Slayer Support Network is more important to her emotional stability than she realizes. In such a confused emotional state, she lashed out at those who were closest to her; *they* realized that she had a problem, even if she didn't. At the end of the episode, Buffy is embarassed about how she's been treating her friends, and tells Angel in SAR that she was only dancing with Xander to make him jealous, so her actions weren't without consequences/acknowledgement. Buffy hurt the people she cared about in WSWB, but her behavior was a product of *her own* hurt/fear/loss of innocence. :::gulp:::Whew, that was longer than I meant it to be... - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Dec 1997 18:46:40 -0800 From: Lawless Subject: BUFFY: Plans for Buffy's 3rd season A director friend of mine recently talked with Joss Whedon about a 3rd season. Neither one of us knew that the other like the show. Anyway, we were talking about Kendra and the question came up, that how is Kendra so old? Buffy only died last season (approximately 6-8 months ago). Buffy certainly didn't age more than that, so how could Kendra have been sent, trained, and be a teenager in such a short time? Also, from Kendra's comments, it sounded to me like she had been being trained her whole life. For example: no education, not knowing her parents, and not talking to boys ... Certainly if she had recently become a slayer she would have had a normal life until then. Are there Pre-Slayers out there all over the world? If so do they train in hopes of becoming the next slayer? Maybe this issue was already discussed, since I haven't been on here all that long. Matt =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Matthew J. Was it just me that noticed this? Also, why didn't Xander die when she kissed him? That was a kiss, right?? Annie L.
