Jenny has something to offer and she doesn't rag on the kids unnecesssarily and without reason. After watching BE a second time, that has to be the thing that bugged me about Joyce most. He wrote a very prominant piece--impossible to miss it!--about the two part Buffy, giving it three and a half stars. Also there's a nice pic of Angel and Buffy that is cropped from a larger pic of the entire cast. I'm too lazy to type out the entire article, and since it's so long I shouldn't do that anyway, but below there are some bits of it and they DO contain mild spoiler (some of which you probably know already.) S P O I L E R S BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ********************* *********************** "...Gellar's Buffy turns 17--but it's hardly a happy birthday. Not when her boyfriend Angel, a deceptively youthful vampire who has switched from evil to good, is targeted for torture and destruction. Not when Spike and Drusilla, the twisted vampire gangleaders thought vanquished by Buffy, return from the undead to wreak havoc--this time with the role reversal of a weakened Spike and a powerful, twisted Drusilla. Now when one of Buffy's circle of trusted confidants(Anthony Stewart Head's Giles, Nicholas Brendon's Xander, Alyson Hannigan's Willow, Charisma Carpenter's Cordelia, and Robia La Morte's Jenny) turns out to be hiding a truly sinister agenda." (From this I think we can guess that the one who betrays Buffy IS Jenny, because who else would have been hiding a sinister agenda all this time? I'd say Principal Snyder may be hiding something sinister, but he's not included in this list of people, and he certainly isn't in Buffy's circle of friends anyway.) Bianculli goes on to mention the reassembling of a dark knight from an old legend on the night that Buffy *contemplates* losing her virginity. There's also a snippit of a conversation between Buffy and Willow that I found amusing, as did Bianculli: Buffy: "You think he's too old because he's a *senior*? Please. My boyfriend had a bicentennial." (Willow's worried about dating Oz cuz he's a senior.) That's about it for the spoilers mentioned in the article, though Bianculli does heap more praise on the show. Any number of list participants have expressed this view, and I'm going to hazard a guess that it's not accidental (perhaps only slightly tinged by my personal utter loathing for Seinfeld). My theory is that Buffy appeals to people who enjoy whimsy and sophisticated verbal wit. Seinfeld appeals to people whose funnybone is tickled more by bad attitudes, pratfalls and people in awkward situations. The most fundamental motif of Seinfeld, if you could verbalize the attitude projected by *all* the players, is something like, "everybody out there is a fool, and doesn't it just aggravate you, and isn't it just shaking-your-head-at pathetic that certain people behave as though they were civil. Those are the ones you *really* want to hurt, let's hurt them." In Seinfeld, truly, no remotely civil behavior ever goes unridiculed, or exists for any other purpose. On Buffy, incredibly clever humor aside, there is true loyalty, dignity and courage in the face of horrible adversity. In Seinfeld, there is mostly *unclever* humor (the Seinfeld writers and Joss Whedon don't even exist in the same universe), misanthropy, ceaseless ridicule of people who aren't pathological and, most of all, endless whining. No one *speaks* without whining. Okay, I now await outraged defenses of Seinfeld from anyone who likes it, but I think the bottom line is, people just differ in what amuses them, and Seinfeld clearly appeals to the majority of Americans, whereas Buffy doesn't. Peace to Seinfeld lovers; you are completely entitled to your opinion and your enjoyment, but I am curious to know what the prevailing opinion is of subscribers to the list. If you think Whedon's humor is more appealing than Seinfeld's, why, and otherwise, why is Seinfeld preferable? Most host stumble over their lines and are very obvious reading the cue-cards. The skating skit was interesting because of WML and her skating background. Perhaps Sarah does smoke, she was puffing away during the skit. The Goth Talk skit reminded be alot of LtM. The Buffy/Seinfeld skit is a funny idea, I don't think that Sarah had Julia-Louis Dreyfuss down. She did nail the spice girl, I thought. In fact it was pretty scary with that wig and dress she looked just like that Spice Girl. The accent during the stripper skit was also pretty funny.
