On a basic level, it had all the ingredients that make for classic = Buffy: innuendo, angst, Cordy being an idiot, Xander the one liner = king, Willow just being adorable, and Angel looking soulful. Plus, we = had the return of Dru and Spike (The best damn undead tv villains to = come down the pike since Chuck Barris and Gene Reyburne), a couple of = real cool plot twists, and a slightly ambiguous cliffhanger (This is his = reaction to sex?). Even on just a base television watching level, this = was a damn good show, except for the ONE HUGE GAPING HOLE no one seemed = to notice that I'll get to in a minute (Yeah, I'm milking it, but what = the hell) But there was so much more to Surprise, starting with the innuendo fest = between Angel and Buffy. Sick me, I was expecting = her to let him go for her cut (Maybe in a later ep. :-). I thought the = entire sequence was handled quite tastefully (Lord knows it could have = been worse). Then we have the cliffhanger--I know I'm out of sequence here, but = antic in me, not to mention that I've been in the same situation), their = ongoing relationship has been really cute (I hate that word, but it = fits). The asking for a date scene tonight was priceless. If she can't = have Xander, at least let her have a good one (Unless he paves the way = for Xander :-) Xander and Cordy: It's amusing. I hope to God it doesn't last. Xander in general: Is it just me, or did every line out of his mouth = seem like a one liner tonight? It got real annoying after awhile, to = the point where I thought he was just being an ass for no real reason. = The lines were funny, but there was just too many of them and none of = the character. Spike and Dru: I love these guys. It's a shame they're probably not = going to be around next year (I've been told that each year of Buffy is = more or less self-contained: Last year was the Master, this year Spike = and Dru, next year ?), because these guys are great. The actor in me = would give organs to play Spike. They're evil, they know they're evil, = and they could give a whooping funt. I love how the tables have been = reversed and it is now Dru (Still a couple of burritos shy of a = combination platter) taking care of Spike (The scene where she licked = his scar. Eeeeew!) The Judge: Okay, my big problem. First off, I'm sorry he looks dippy. = He should be a bad guy on Lost In Space, not here, although it was nice = to see the actor again (I can't remember his name. Seen him for years). = Secondly, in the scene where he's about to kill Buffy and Angel drops = the kleag light on him. The Judge fell through the floor, right? That = was what put the gaping hole in the floor that Buffy and Angel used to = escape, right? Then where the hell was he in the sewers? How did Angel = and Buffy hide and escape from the pursuing vampires without running = into him? If he didn't fall through the floor, why didn't Dru send him = instead of the two vampires who we KNOW aren't going to find them? = Where did he go? Did the light send him to a parallel dimension? Did = he suddenly realize how stupid he looked and run away in shame? Wha' = happened? Anyway, I'm done rambling. Score: 5 out of 5 (I can ignore the bad = stuff just because I was glued to the screen for the whole hour). =20 See ya tomorrow for part 2. Jeff - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 22:19:26 -0700 From: David Simpson Subject: BUFFY: BUFFY in USA Today There was a nice article about Buffy's move to Tuesday nights on the WB in today's on-line edition of USA Today. I haven't seen it roll in on my digest yet, so I have included it below. It is very positive about the show. Watch out for possible spoilers down a few paragraphs in the story. - --------------- 'Buffy' ready to sink teeth into Tuesdays SANTA MONICA, Calif. - On a quiet street about 25 blocks from the beach, there's an industrial warehouse that's home to vampires, crosses and buckets of fake blood. This is where TV's teen hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer is taped, where high-schoolers and monsters are created in the same dressing rooms and a reporter is sharing some chicken and rice with actor David Boreanaz, who happens to have yellow eyes, part of his vampire makeup. "I got to wear these yellow eyes for Halloween, too," just for fun, says Boreanaz, who plays Buffy's vampire lover, Angel. "I put them right over my contact lenses." Angel is a key component of WB's plan to move Buffy to Tuesdays, where it becomes a companion to the touted teen drama Dawson's Creek on the mininetwork's new fourth night of programming. A two-part Buffy airs Monday at 9 ET/PT and concludes Tuesday at 8. Buffy is about a normal high school girl who lives in a quiet small town that happens to have a lot of bloodsucking monsters. She punches, kicks and otherwise muscles the beasts out of town. This week's episodes show Angel's transformation from good vampire to bad, and all involved with the show say this move changes the direction of Buffy. "This is great," says the actor. "I've been brooding for so long. Now I can really have some fun." Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays Buffy, is delighted with the show's move to Tuesdays. "I never thought we were compatible with 7th Heaven," she says of the family drama that's been Buffy's lead-in. "It attracts a totally different audience from our show. We're a much better fit with Dawson's Creek." But having her TV boyfriend turn on her has been tough. "The scenes are now so emotional for me - I'm drained," says Gellar, 20, during a visit on the set. "It's a new relationship for me." Those killer kicks of Buffy's are real. Gellar started studying tae kwon do at age 8 because "all the girls took ballet, and I was such a tomboy, I wanted to do something different." One kick during shooting last season resulted in a broken foot, an injury she camouflaged with big boots. The last year has been a roller coaster for Gellar, who before Buffy was best known as Kendall Hart on ABC's All My Children. Gellar completed the first 13 episodes of Buffy, then immediately flew to North Carolina to shoot the summer horror hit I Know What You Did Last Summer. She followed that up with Scream 2, returned to Buffy and has another film lined up for April 1, when production wraps for the second season. "Buffy's been a lot of pressure," she says. "I'm in every scene, and there's a lot riding on me. For the films, I was a member of an ensemble, and that was a lot of fun." Buffy was a surprise hit for WB, whose shows hover near the bottom of the Nielsen ratings. Buffy clicked both with critics (appearing on many "best of the year" lists in December) and WB's target audience of teens and young adults. "It had been a long time since teens had been written with respect on television," Gellar says. "And there's certainly never been a teen female action hero before. "Kids love that." I know lots of people probably loved it, but all I can say is ... ugh! I have no problem with the _plot_, you understand, and Angel's role in it -- what I hate are endless scenes of over-the-top romantic dialogue. And I really hate that Buffy no longer slays alone, or with her Watcher, but now her slaying trips are constantly in the company of her vampire boyfriend, who does just as well as she does -- whatever happened to "She is the chosen one"? But the one good thing that comes out of all of this is that I am now sure I _really_ don't want to see Mulder and Scully get together -- I mean, if _this_ is what happens to an action series once romance takes over the storyline, I can now rest assured that it's always better _unconsummated_. I have included it below for those who are interested. There are no spoilers in it, but it is a nice write-up about the show. - --------------------- Buffy Slated to Slay on Tuesdays=20 Can the WB's smart young vampire fighter help the network put a firm stake in prime time? After this week's action-packed two-parter (tonight and Tuesday, 8 p.m./ET), Buffy the Vampire Slayer moves from Mondays to Tuesdays for the rest of the season. Its new 8 p.m./ET Tuesday slot should provide the perfect lead-in for Dawson's Creek, the WB's much-hyped drama from Kevin Williamson, the creator of Scream.=20 David Boreanaz, who plays Buffy's undead love interest, Angel, wouldn't reveal too much about the two-parter. "All these characters on the show are going to be having some changes," he told our Jeanne Wolf. "They're going to be very dynamic, crazy changes, but they're going to be good changes." Is that all we get? "For me to go into that area," said Boreanaz, "I'd have to be chained up and tortured by Drusilla again." Putting its two hottest shows on the same night could help the WB create a kind of must-see TV for a young, hip audience much the way Fox once built Wednesday night out of the back-to-back powerhouses Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place in the early '90s. Until recently, young audiences were relegated to channel-surfing hell on Tuesday nights to avoid such boomer-oriented shows as Michael Hayes, Frasier and Home Improvement.=20 If the WB pulls it off, expect Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar to get just a little more demanding about what she wants for the show's third season.=20 =97 John McPartlin=20 - --------------------- David Simpson mailto: simpsond@utah-inter.net Buffy: Hi, guys. MAJOR SPOILERS FOR PART *2* COMING DON'T GO ANY FURTHER IF YOU WANT TO BE SURPRISED ON TUESDAY S P O I L E R S P A C E H E R E LAST CHANCE -- MAJOR SPOILERS FOR INNOCENCE AHEAD Angel's soul is definitely gone. Buffy doesn't realize this the first time she sees him after their night together and he unleashes some of the cruelest dialogue imaginable upon her and reduces her to tears. Angel does try to kill Willow. It's part of his plan of mental attack against Buffy. As he tells Spike and Dru (with whom he has teamed up, creating an interesting dynamic including some clear jealousy on the part of Spike), he thinks that Buffy is strong physically but the way that he'll be able to beat her is through her heart. Willow catches Xander and Cordelia kissing in the library. She initially freaks out and runs out into the hall. Xander runs after her and gets hit by the line: "You'd rather be with someone you hate than be with me." Later, she tells Xander that she's willing to put aside her feelings on the matter for now since there is important work to be done (i.e. finding a way to kill The Judge). Oz and Willow share some private conversation after she catches Cordy and Xander together. She asks him to make out with her. He declines saying that it's obvious even to the casual observer that she just wants to get back at Xander. He says he daydreams about kissing her and he's willing to wait until she wants to do so for the right reason. From the look on Willow's face after he says this, she's almost there already. Buffy realizes that Jenny had something to do with the curse being removed (it came to Buffy in a dream) and confronts her. Physically, in front of a whole computer class. In the presence of Giles, Jenny explains to Buffy that the one moment of true happiness that Angel shared with her caused the curse to be removed. Jenny tries to explain that there was nothing she could do but is rebuffed by Giles and Buffy. They go to see Jenny's uncle to see if he can do anything, but Angel got there first and killed him and wrote "Was it good for you too?" in blood on the wall, in order for Buffy to see it. At this point, Buffy realizes she must kill Angel. Buffy kills (or at least dismembers) The Judge with a really powerful weapon (I'm no expert, but it looked like some sort of hand-held surface to air missile launcher kind of thing) that Xander, Cordy, Oz and Willow stole from the local military base (Sunnydale gets bigger all the time). Xander apparently retained all the knowledge of being a soldier from his Halloween experience. After Buffy kills The Judge she has a one-on-one battle with Angel. At the end of the fight, she has the opportunity to stake him. Angel: "You can't do it, you can't kill me". In response, she gives him a kick where it really hurts. After he goes down to the ground, she walks away saying "Give me time." There's a really touching scene between Buffy and Giles that I can't do justice to at the end of the episode. He expresses his respect for Buffy and pledges his support as the coming months are going to be difficult as they have to fight Spike, Dru and now Angel. The ep is written and directed by Joss Whedon and to me, really had the heavy, emotional feel of Prophecy Girl. (SPOILERS for 1/19 Part One) Spoilers for 1/19, First Part of Two-Parter: Six Points about Part One: 1. As soon as I saw Vincent Schiavelli listed in the opening credits (Jenny's uncle), I knew we were in for a heck of a ride. Vincent is the unsung anti-hero of more horror & thriller flicks than you can count on all your fingers and toes (because of his "handsome" countenance, no doubt). He honors BtVS with his mere presence. Joss decided to pull out some big guns in the casting of this one (including the return of "Luke" Brian as The Judge, yippee!) 2. If they could only give out an Emmy for raw cuteness, Alyson/Willow would have to win one for this ep. Her "getting asked for a date" scene with Oz in her big floppy purple hat (especially as she walked away, talking to herself) was simply off the cuteness scale. It terms of sheer cuteness, it will perhaps never be surpassed by anyone, in any show, ever. 3. Dru was so gleeful about the incineration of sweet devoted nerdvamp, Dalton (the fact that he was picked because he feels and reads made it even sadder). She has no loyalty, even to faithful members of her own kind (heck, historians suspect even ruthless pirates were loyal to their own kind). Now I want her to die. 4. As soon as they said that the Judge's touch could burn away humanity, I suspected that might become the mechanism for Angel's rumored "change." But now it seems that being physically intimate with Buffy will be the real change mechanism. Or will it? 5. Did she *really* have sex with him? She was still wearing some of her clothes in bed. 6. Did everyone catch in the tail-end promo for the two-parter that they said "Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer"? I've never heard them say Joss's name before. Is this a move to give Joss some much-deserved credit, or does his name now have drawing value, like Wes Craven's? You be the judge, Lisa - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 03:46:14 -0800 From: Lisa Rose Subject: BUFFY: Elaine the Vampire Slayer Just managed to watch the tape of SMG on SNL and I loved it! 1. Buffy does Seinfeld. How can people not see all the humorous little digs in that skit? Joss has stated publicly that Seinfeld is "the coldest show on television," setting that up as a perfect parody from the get-go. So now, Joss's little baby, BtVS, is being rendered into the cool, calculated comedy of manners that is (was) Seinfeld. They might be having a bit of irreverent fun with Joss. b. Plus, there is Elaine who (on the Seinfeld show) has constant disasters in her attempts to connect with men romantically, but who nonetheless hangs out almost exclusively with men (Jerry, George, Kramer) as friends. So vampires become metaphors for men in the parody. She slays them all day long, but comes home and hangs with them as though nothing's amiss after work ("Jerry" even jokes about how many of his friends she killed during the day). c. And in the announcer's voice-over for the skit, it seemed that the entrenched vampire subculture was being used as a metaphor for other subcultures in the Seinfeld section of Manhattan, such as the Entertainment or Jewish subcultures (both of which are a constant source of self-reference on Seinfeld). I thought that skit was much subtler and funnier than many are giving it credit for. Plus, SMG, and the guys playing Jerry and Kramer did great caricatures of their characters, imho. 2. Sarah's sign to Alyson at the end: That was sooooo sweet, and Aly seems so deserving of such affections. Yet I can't help but laugh. If SMG had done that for Nick, David, or Tony instead, people would be screaming about the romantic overtones. But not if it's Aly. Couple that with what (the late) O3rd iBlnd wrote recently: At 12:48 AM 1/19/98 EST, O3rd iBlnd wrote: >She said hi to Aly because in Seventeen magazine, it said >they have been hangin out a lot lately and enchanging gifts. >They've been like really close. b. Hanging out, exchanging gifts, getting close? Can you imagine if she were doing that with one of the boys? I'm not saying that she and Aly have a "thing," because close friends can certainly do stuff like that w/o romantic overtones. But it's interesting that no one even brought that up (as far as I can tell) on a list that thrives on racy (and sometimes questionable) rumors. 3. Funny how both BtVS and now SNL have been able to make hay from SMG's ability to skate. Too bad little "Tara" didn't get to take Michelle K. out of the competition with a skate blade to her throat (ala BH#1)! It would have been a perfect episode crossover-device, given that Tara's new role-model was Tonya "Knee-Crusher" Harding. 4. OT: Norm on the Teen Beat segment was hilarious, playing essentially the role of a "homosexual pedophile," which is quite ironic given that such was his frequent controversial description of Michael Jackson (when he did Weekend Update). Was also kinda funny that the naive and enthralled teen girls accepted Norm as "one of them" because he shared their feelings for JTT (not to mention his ad-libbing when his moustache fell off amongst them). All in all, a coup, imho, Lisa - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 07:59:46 -0500 From: Schimmel <75211.522@compuserve.com> Subject: BUFFY: Gypsies? I just don't understand people who read every syllable they can find about a show and then complain that they know too much and the episode is ruined for them! The solution is so simple- if you don't want to know- don't read ANYTHING and you're sure to be surprised! Sandra (tired of the constant complaints about spoilers) - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 08:41:50 -0500 From: Dan Compora Subject: BUFFY: Dru-Jenny (Talk about preview) I haven't rewatched the episode yoet, but in one scene, I seem to remeber a quick flash from Jenny to Dru, supporting what has already been mentioned as Dru being the Gypsy Angel killed. Someone questioned this theory, but Jenny's uncle made it pretty darn clear--he just didn't name Dru by name, but the scenarios were exact. This got me to thinking, has Jenny been involved in any of the previous Dru confrontations? she was not there when the church burned, nor was she there on Halloween or Lie to me. I'm sure she knows Dru is a vamp though. My wife came up with an interesting theory, based on the previews. In case talking about previews is considered spoiling... Perhaps the curse was removed when buffy and Angel had ...relations. In the preview, Jenny said something like this to Buffy: "What you did will get people killed." Perhaps the curse stipulated that if Angel ever found "love" again, that would mean he was happy and therefore the curse would be removed. BTW, I'm not one to often comment on physical appearance, and I'm not usually one who notices Willow's often discussed beauty--I've always thought she was kind of cute in a geeky way, but nothing to look twice at. But yesterday, when she went up to Oz in that purple hat, she looked so darn cute. I finally saw what others have been talking about in Willow. ________________________________________________________________________ Dan--Keeper of Cordelia's Gatorade cup, Jenny's mousepad, & Willow's upgrade diskettes dcompora@monroe.lib.mi.us - - ------------------------------ End of buffy-digest V2 #42 ************************** To subscribe to buffy or buffy-digest, send the command subscribe buffy-digest or subscribe buffy to majordomo@xmission.com.
