I've only watched both episodes once this week but I noticed that in both, water was a major element in the show. First when they're at the docks and Buffy gets thrown into the ocean, then when Angel and Buffy escape the Judge and come out of the sewer it's raining, and finally at the mall when the sprinklers go off. Now, I'm not a psychology major or anything but water has always symbolized two things: a rebirth and sex. Now the "sex" one is pretty clear what with Buffy and Angel doing the deed. But the rebirth one fits right in, too, with Angel being reborn into his "vampire" self again. I wonder if TPTB did this on purpose or I'm just WAY into symbolism. (Blame freshman English 102.) My guess is that the invitation rule only applies to people's homes. For instance, when Angel went to see Jenny's uncle, I'm assuming that he was staying in a hotel, not his home and thus didn't require invitation. Next, I don't think that Angel purposely sought Buffy out in order to break the curse. He said himself that he tried to stay away (or something like that) but couldn't. It just so happened that he was in the heat of the moment when he finally achieved true happiness, true release where every thought in his mind was joyous, no lurking guilt in the back of his mind. At the end of part one, I think Angel looked like he was having major cramps because his soul and the demon inside of him were fighting it out and the demon was reasserting itself inside his body. I'm wondering though, is Spike ever going to be back at full strength on his own or is it going to require some sort of special circumstance (like Dru)? It just seems like he's not making any particular progress. Incidentally, was there a purpose to showing Spike listening to the Buffy and the Slayerettes when they're at the warehouse? Was it just to establish that Spike was still there? After reading the post about how David Boreanaz is on the cover of the March YM (heehee), I'm thinking that it's great how all of a sudden, EVERYONE's noticed Buffy. Didn't it start with SMG on the cover of TV Guide? And then YM is putting out two consecutive covers with Buffy actors. Ain't it great? Maybe this has been covered but can vamps get sick? I was just wondering if Buffy and Angel used protection, which lead to the question of whether or not vamps can harbor communicable diseases. Anyone know? Beautifully taped love scene though. Took my breath away. Lastly, the candle thing. Personally, I think it was another symbol of Buffy growing up. Normally, when people light candles, they're supposed to make a wish and then blow it out. Well, at that point, I think that Buffy realized that making a wish wasn't going to help, essentially making this a scene that showed her growing cynicism. Perhaps it was also a symbol of her love dying but either way, it was a symbol of her growing up. I thought I was going to cry while she was listening to the dialogue of that old movie. Okay. Enough is enough. I’ve been reading the last few days’ digests, and I’m blown away by the intelligence, thoughtfulness and articulateness (is that a word?) of this group! I’ll do my best to keep up! First, a quick thought: I was listening to an oldies station today, and they played “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” and I realized that it would be a great song for Xander and Cordelia: “I don’t like you, but I love you/ Seems like I’m always thinking of you/ You treat me badly/ I love you madly/ You’ve really got a hold on me/ I don’t want you, but I need you/ Don’t want to kiss you, but I need to/ I want to split now/ I just can’t quit now/ You’ve really got a hold on me.” On to the show. I just have to add my “Wow!” to everyone else’s - those were two AMAZING episodes! I’m glad Joss took the unexpected turn of making Angel evil again; of course I like Buffy and want to see her happy, but plotwise, there isn’t much to do once she and Angel are together and happy. Sure, they’d have problems down the road, when she grows older and he doesn’t, but in the present, their happiness would mean a lack of story. The idea that they had finally admitted their love, and she lost her virginity to him, and now suddenly he’s evil and nasty - well, THERE’s fertile ground for a lot of drama! Of course I feel terrible for her..but wow, what a compelling story! Also, and I mean absolutely no disrespect to the Angel fans, but personally, I found “good” Angel to be rather bland. I generally like good vampires (I’m a fan of Dark Shadows and Forever Knight), but Angel just didn’t seem to have much personality, IMHO. He’s much more interesting as an evil character to me. And his evilness is having so many repercussions! Buffy’s love life shattered, Buffy’s “professional” life much more difficult (not only does she now have a powerful new enemy, but she can’t even bring herself to kill him), and a major love triangle brewing with Angel, Drusilla and Spike. I’m GLUED to my TV! Oz and Willow - TOTALLY adorable, and I definitely want them to be together. Their gentle, sweet scenes are a nice contrast to the darkness of the rest of the show. Oz is much better boyfriend material than Xander - sensitive, romantic, emotionally mature (not wanting to make out with Willow until she was over Xander - very nice to see in a guy, if only a fictional guy!), with a sense of humor. I liked their banter at the beginning: “I’m going to ask you to go out with me tomorrow night, and I’m kind of nervous about it.” “Well, if it helps, I’m going to say yes.” “It does help. It creates a comfort zone.” Too cute for words. Alyson’s acting in this episode was terrific - her glee as she said to herself, “I said `date’!”, the hurt look in her eyes when she found out about Xander/Cordelia. And when Xander said they needed a large vehicle for his plan, I loved the hint of cattiness in her voice when she said, “I’ll get Oz - HE has a van.” Just a SLIGHT edge to her voice, as if to say, “which makes him much cooler than you, you loser.” Xander and Cordelia - very funny. I have to laugh every time they have a fight and then say, “Oh, what the heck, let’s make out.” A very weird, but very entertaining, relationship. > i don't get the fact that if Spike and Dru can have a loving > relationship and still be vampires, then why cant buffy and Angel > still be together, but the exception being he's an evil > Angel.... I think there’s three reasons. First, Spike and Dru are BOTH evil, and they really groove on each other’s evilness. They’re on the same wavelength, so to speak. Whereas evil Angelus and good Buffy now have opposite beliefs and values, so there’s no common ground. Secondly, Angelus seems to be much MORE evil and less human than Spike. The Judge wanted to zap Spike and Drusilla for their affection, but Angelus is “clean”. I think Angelus is utterly incapable of any kind of love or loyalty. Thirdly, Angelus now hates the fact that he ever had tender feelings, so he hates Buffy for being the one who brought out those feelings. So, no chance for a relationship there. With Angel's apartment, there are two possibilities: one, since the apartment was vacant when Angel moved in, it didn't count as someone's residence because no one was living there; or two, if he has a landlord or landlady, he or she would have said something like "Come on in" when Angel first came to look at the place. Oops, sorry about that. I meant to say a "new slayer should be called." I think Warner Brothers realized they might have some problems when they put Angel and Buffy together and decided to break them up for awhile. I also had a discussion on the sex thing with a friend of mine and he had some interesting things to say: "The show was reaching that Moonlighting stage. Ratings are rising, but a relationship would have killed the show. Fanatics might have liked it or wanted it, but the normal people are turned off by such things. At least that is what ratings have shown in the past. Look at Moonlighting, Remington Steele, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, etc. for proof. All shows with a mystery/action background with primary character being female, with a male protagonist. All 3 shows were in the top 10 at some point, but dropped like a rock when the two became involved. Buffy follows the same basic guidelines, but has more than one male: Angel and Xander, and has thrown in two females with Willow and Cordelia for the romance to center around. I don't know why shows fail when two become a couple, but I remember a class at UT where it was discussed. Even Happy Days was said to have bombed when they gave the Fonz a steady woman. Now I remember that, but I thought the show bombed because Cunningham left. My class finally came up with the fact that the show creates a sex symbol in their primary male and female characters (or in Happy Days case just in the Fonz). Most people watch the show because they grow to like the main characters. So they are turned off when they become part of a relationship. Another prime example was Friends. Friends was doing real well until that whole relationship with Rachel and Ross. So NBC has the show axe the relationship and ratings are strong again. Hell I think your web site (and others like it) could be used to help substantiate the theory. SMG is way popular now primarily due to Buffy. She has a lot of people drooling after her, and our theory is they watch because she is single, and in their mind available in a sense. Give her a relationship and they will lose interest because she would somehow become less attainable. Doesn't make much practical sense, but it doesn't make much practical sense that you could create a newspaper that just covers made up stories on celebrities, and make a killing. The sad truth is that people do become obssessed in a limited sense with "stars." Lawless - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 23:13:40 -0600 From: "S." Ok I admit that while Jenny did not know that this would eventually balloon into all this, she is not without fault with regards to Giles and Buffy's feelings. Giles has been betrayed by someone he cares about. How this will work itself out will remain to be seen. With The Judge (more on him later) on hand he certainly didn't need her around mucking things up anymore than they already were. And Buffy, well as far as she knew ("What do you know? SLAM!") Jenny was responsible for everything from Angel's transformation to the depletion of the ozone layer (her dreams are just sooo vague). So I can understand their feelings. She committed the sin of ommission as far as they are concerned. > And then at the end Buffy LET HIM GO?!!!! It's about time a new > slayer was killed since she can't handle her job. This show has built upon the notion that Buffy has many a problem reconciling (SP?) her life as a HS girl and her destiny as the Slayer (can we say "What's My Line"?) I've fallen in love twice in my life and had that love betrayed once. Now granted she never turned into a vamp but I think I would still have trouble driving a stake into her heart. Love makes you do....well you know... > Now, about the Judge. A rocket launcher? that's the way to solve the > Armageddon? I believe we were to assume that this guy was badder than the Master by 10X at least. And he actually killed her. Yeah no weapon forged--I think this set up a really cool climax that we were denied. That's my only beef about the entire two-parter. Sadly, it's a big one. > The guy must have been an extra from Toy Story. Ok that's just silly and unneccessary. > Also, the complete personality switch of Cordelia still baffles me. > This was someone who wouldn't spit on Buffy if she was on fire in > season one, but in season 2, the "romance" season, she suddenly > becomes miss "How Can I Help?" True, but the significance of the cross dates back to the series premiere= . Angel gave it to her when they first met, when Buffy was rebelling against bein= g the Slayer. It ended up saving her life, because when she faced Luke she almo= st got killed by him, until the cross fell out of her pocket and burned him. One= thing I'm waiting to see is her remembering Angel's leather jacket, the one he = gave her in Teacher's Pet. To me it just seemed a little more personal, since = he was concernec for her well-being, not just the Slayer's.
