(BBB Spoiler) Spoiler for BBB: I just noticed a curious parallel. Buffy the Rat was stalked by a black cat in the school basement. And a black cat was present in Amy & Catherine's home the first time we met Amy last season (presumably as a witch's "familiar"?). It jumped out of a chest and was in the opening credits. Perhaps it was not literally supposed to be the same cat, or an actual vengeful agent of Catherine's. But at the figurative level, it kinda could be. Buffy, who defeated Catherine, was now under the power of a Catherine-style transformation spell, and the cat was trying to kill her. I doubt it's just a coincidence that a black cat appears in both Amy episodes. I thought it was pretty heavily implied, but now that I try to come up with reasons, all I have are intuitions: not only is Dru' sighted and pretty handy with the tarot cards, but the Jenna's uncle said the curse was made because Angel took the brightest princess of their poeple (or something like that), presumably this would not only mean someone innocent and pure, but also magically gifted or sighted. Angel compared the gypsy-woman for whom he was cursed to Buffy (I was assuming they were alike personality-wise, not looks) and he does seem to have had a rather intense relationship with Dru'; when he stopped her from killing the kid in the park, he seemed guilty and sad. I'm being a bad fan, because I can't remember exactly...but I thought Angel (or someone) described his mentally torturing the gypsy-woman, which he definitely did to Dru'. Maybe there was something else said when she was torturing him with the holy water, or by Jenna and her uncle... I think Angel said he killed her, but the gypsy uncle said he "took" her, but Angel might have thought making her a vamp was the functional equivalent of killing her, also he wouldn't want Buffy to think of him as "making" little vampires. also if he killed a lot of her relatives, the other gypsies would have that much stronger a reason to want to curse him and keep him cursed. Storywise, there's a certain poetic rightness to Angel being the cause of Dru's downfall and Dru' the cause of Angel's curse. Sorry if I jumped to conclusions, but I think I'll keep'em, if only for the last reason. - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 20:52:16 +0000 From: Jack Welsh Subject: BUFFY: B, B, & B BB&B has to be one of the best episodes of the season! I'm a bit personally annoyed by the "Buffy turned into a rat" bit, because over on the Buffy-Beta list I'm in the middle of writing a "Buffy turned into a dog" story. Now my story is not as unique, and I've got to worry about lines and scenes that are too similar to what was aired. Other assorted thoughts: It was Xander's turn for the "right person, wrong reason" speech; we had Willow saying it to Xander in Prophecy Girl, Oz saying it to Willow in Innocence, and Xander saying it to Buffy here. And it could be one of those metaphors for teenage situations; Buffy is the equivalent of drunk or drugged, and Xander refuses to take advantage of her non-clear-headed state, a potential lesson for teens to follow. I liked the irony of the scene where Xander is about to be killed by Angel, but is saved because Drusilla comes along to turn Xander into a vampire. Then he's saved in turn from Drusilla by Willow and company, who want to ax murder him. Willow in Xander's bedroom: I thought Alyson's acting was very good here, managing to simultaneously convey Willow's usual innocence and spell-caused sexual aggressiveness (which I found a sexy combination). A question about the love spell Amy cast: was it on the women of Sunnydale, making them fall in love with Xander, or was it on Xander, making him irresistible to women? The latter might be better to assume, since it makes the magic less powerful; instead of having the power to brainwash a whole town, Amy was just able to give Xander the power to brainwash women who see him (Drusilla saw Xander in a vision, right?).
