From saving Buffy from Teresa in Phases to telling off Angel in KBD, his speech is in line with a slightly more "get tough" attitude. And Buffy has shown in Passion and KBD that she is feeling extreme guilt for Angelus' murder spree. It may be an unpopular opinion with Angel fans, but if she hadn't gotten involved with him in the first place a lot of mayhem could have been avoided. While I agree with the fact that everyone more or less _adjusts_ to the situation they're placed in, it doesn't mean that the "popular" kids in school are going to befriend the not so "popular" kids. The question is, what does it mean to be popular? Well, living in this godforsaken rich suburb where one of my friends just got a bmw for getting into med school (I love him like a brother but this doesn't mean that it doesn't still tick me off), to be popular means to have money. But quite honestly, while many kids envy the money and exclusivity of the popular circle, there aren't many of us that would like to be included within it, myself included. To some extent, there is still judgement based on what clothes you wear and what kind of car you drive. I will admit that there has been improvement though. Now kids don't reject or accept based _solely_ on financial status but it still plays an important role. The sad thing that I've realized is that, much of the real world works that way as well. If you think family and friends can't make teens realize the reality of things , what makes everyone think that SMG or some celebrity make them realize that. There actors and actresses not guidance cousellors or teenagers parents. They can't change the ideas of certain people with a public announcement , they have tried and failed constantly. Example, cigarette warnings. They have had more public announcements than ever on the danger of smoking and the number of teens who smoke continue to rise. Also it would be hypocritical for certain actors to do that for anything. Do we know if that person who is making the public announcement is not doing drugs or is practicing safe sex? And especially if there character is like that who will listen to them? Don't get me wrong , seeing extra of the Btvs cast is not bad or if they ever do that I wouldn't hold it against them but if BTVS does that it won't be taken seriously because the show's focus is not based on real life issues. Another thing people will just see it as a promotional tactic for money nad exposure especially when the show isn't really about that. They already do there part by subletly showing certain lessons and moral issues"Sex has consequences" and that's enough.I could name more but I think I have said more than enough. - - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 00:50:14 EDT From: Vass99 Subject: Re: BUFFY: Letters, books In a message dated 98-04-11 00:02:16 EDT, cn2759@coastalnet.com writes: << Else they might want to replace Buffy for a period of time in the summer for a replacement series. Why should you care? It's a site dedicated to swashbuckling women of all descriptions, and includes pages about movie-Buffy, "our" Buffy, and Sophia Crawford (Buffy's stunt double). Right now it's just got a few images and a paragraph about each person, along with a couple pertinent links; I'm in the gradual process of expanding, and the next update will include two pix of Sophia recently posted by Jeff Pruitt and a little more about her time on _WMAC Masters_. (OT plug: the Hideaway, like all my sites, is now "Bobby Approved" to conform to Web Accessibility Initiative guidelines for accessibility to disabled users. For more info, visit http://www.cast.org/bobby/ ) Second order of business: my $0.02 on Xander's rather, um, vehement attitude toward Angel. Your mileage may certainly vary on this one, but before "Innocence" my take was that he *had* started to consider Angel a friend--the only male one he's really had much contact with since Jesse died, as a matter of fact. (Well, unless you count Giles, but he's a grownup and definitely in a different category in Xander's head.) It was starting to seem that way to me for a while--the cracks at Angel's expense were starting to feel about as automatic as the ones at Cordy's expense--but what really clinched it for me was the very casual dissing each other at the end of "Reptile Boy". The attitude there was *so* not actually hostile; that's just the way a lot of young guys seem to deal with each other, e.g. my little brother and even his best friends. And of course there's also the bit with jumping to Angel's defense with the outsider, as represented by Kendra ("Angel's our friend!"), then immediately catching himself being too open about it and getting questioning looks from the rest of the gang ("Except I don't like him.") Now it may be just *because* Kendra was the outsider, and therefore Angel--as part of the group by consensus--is to be defended for the sake of group loyalty even if Xander doesn't like him personally. I can *completely* see that fitting into Xander's personal code of honor, and would be the last to tell anyone who sees it that way that they're wrong. What I see, though, is that Xander *did* start to see Angel as a friend, but his pride wouldn't let him admit it to Giles and the girls. Then "Innocence" happens, he trusts Angel (or what he *thinks* is Angel, except that Angel ain't all there) by going to get the others and leaving Willow alone with him, and it nearly gets Willow killed. How betrayed can Xander get? And how much has he got to hate who Angel is now for "killing" who he was before? But Xander's got to be the one to not grieve for losing the Angel they knew--he's got to "be strong" for Giles and the girls, who *did* openly like him. So he connects it back to when he *did* simply distrust and dislike Angel, glosses over that messy section in between that would require him to grieve, and channels his currently-*very*-understandable hatred while pretending he thought that all along. He probably also feels stupid for letting himself start to like and trust Angel, thus creating the betrayal factor that imho makes him a lot more vicious about it now than he would be if he had just hated him all along as he claims. Keeper of Buffy's "Sorry Angel. Changed the locks." Keeper of Willow's "You're the Slayer, and we're like, the Slayerettes." Keeper of Xander's "You know, Buffy, Spring Fling just isn't any dance. It's a time for students to choose, um... a mate, and then we can... observe their...mating rituals and tag them before they migrate - Just kill me!" Keeper of Angel's "It must just eat you up that I got there first." Keeper of Cordelia's "Damn it Xander! What's going on? Who died and made you Elvis?" Keeper of Giles' "Things involved with a computer fill me with a child-like terror." Keeper of Spike's "So, who do you kill for fun around here?" - - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 17:54:17 -0300 From: Aida or Fernanda Subject: BUFFY: Tv Ratings I'd like to thank all Buffy fans who helped me figure what those tv ratings meant. I mean, the ones which appear every time there is a new Buffy episode. I've got a real good explanation from AleXander, who makes the transcripts of all Buffy Episodes. I am sure this info below will help all of us: TVY Y stands for Young, meaning all children. TVY7 Y7 is for older children over 7 TVG is for General audiences, all adults and children TVPG means Parental Guidance is suggested for children TV14 means the show is meant for people over 14 only TVMA means Mature Audiences only, people over 18 D means suggestive Dialogue, sexy language L mean Language, lots of swear words etc. S means Sex or suggested Sex V means Violence ObBuffy: concerning that Willow thing. I think Buffy would never be able to face all those issues without her support, so please...stop talking nonsense about Willow. IMHO Happy Easter!!! :D Aida and Fernanda - -- "If I fail, at least I will have failed my way instead of failing someone else's way" Jodie Foster (actress and movie director) - - ------------------------------ End of buffy-digest V2 #219 *************************** To subscribe to buffy or buffy-digest, send the command subscribe buffy-digest or subscribe buffy to majordomo@xmission.com.
