So forgive me. But, it seems to me that Jenny was the kind to back-up everything, either hard copy or disk. We've seen that she copied the ritual to a disk. She continuously brought Giles various tidbits she'd printed from the net. It's conceivable that she had back-ups of all her pagan files and lesson plans on disk. She probably even downloaded a list of bookmarks to disk (especially if she had any presentations or demonstrations she wanted to use). A 12-inch fashion doll of Buffy herself will be available at FAO Schwartz, while a line of 9-inch action figures will be available through Diamond Comic Distributors. The lineup for the 9-inch line is tentatively set to include Buffy, Giles, and Angel; however, this lineup is subject to change as the line is developed. " I am a little disappointed in the line-up, but I am still excited that we are getting toys. I wish that they would make more than three figures, and made Angel and maybe a two-pack of Oz and then him as a werewolf, but if these do well there will probably be a second wave of figures. Also, why are they nine inches?! That is VERY big for a toy, and sometimes the bigger the figure, the less detail. I hope that these toys are cool! - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 May 1998 14:47:34 From: Jeff Rohaly Subject: BUFFY: WttH Comments A station here in Ontario, Canada is showing first season Buffy's every Thursday so I just got to see WttH again for the first time in a while and I have some comments about WttH and the direction of the show in general. 1. I'm slow on the uptake so I just realized the significance of the very first scene between Darla and that guy in the school. Joss wanted to indicate that this wasn't going to be the typical horror series with the typical stereotypical roles. I watched those first season episodes out of order so I already knew that Darla was a vampire when I saw this scene so I sort of feel cheated out of feeling that she was likely to be the victim in that first scene and being surprised when she wasn't. 2. Cordy had some absolutely great lines in WttH. Her "morbid much?", "Don't you have an elsewhere to be" and a bunch of others. Now given that Charisma Carpenter was a regular cast member from the very beginning, are we to infer that original plans were for her to play a bigger role in this series than Angel (since David Boreanaz was just a guest star in the episodes in which he appeared)? More on that below. 3. We always talk about Buffy's hair, but what about Xander's? I know it's superficial, but I swear that Xander's second season look -- the official haircut of the twentysomething -- just changes my opinion of him tremendously. Even though he still fires off the oneliners at some inappropriate times, does immature things (such as the revenge spell in BB&B) and so on, I can't help but look at him differently than the unkempt hair guy of Welcome to the Hellmouth. Also, I have no great insight on this, but since Jesse died at the beginning of the series, Xander has been without a friend of the male persuasion, his own age. I wonder if he and Oz are going to bond, or if the Willow situation will prevent this. 4. I was struck by just how much the show seems to have changed, at least in my opinion. I'm wondering when and why the decision was made to let Angel have a bigger role. Was it fan reaction to Angel or David Boreanaz? Was it a creative decision-- did they feel the show would benefit creatively if they pumped up the relationship aspects? I know a lot of people watch for the Buffy/Angel stuff and more power to you. I'm happy that people watch, regardless of the reason. I always have a tough time pinning down exactly why I watch but the best explanation I have is the quirky, humorous and just basic great writing of individual episodes, regardless of the overall story arc. As long as that remains, I'll keep watching. In any case, after I Only Have Eyes For You, I couldn't help but think to myself that they had constructed a "horror, monster-of-the-week" situation whose main purpose was to further the Buffy/Angel storyline. We'll see what happens in the future and maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but that indicates to me that Joss and the creative team feel that the main strength and focus of the show is the Buffy/Angel relationship and they are structuring the rest of the show around that. Now I know that one of the strengths of this show has been to put a supernatural spin on the "horrors" of high school (the in-people ignore Marcie, she turns invisible and extracts revenge; you lie to an authority figure and go to a party and have one drink and end up almost being sacrificed to a giant reptile) and so I suppose one could see IOHEFY as just a supernatural spin on the "horror" of a relationship gone bad and the need to forgive. I know (probably most) people disagree, but I'd be happier if I could describe this show as one about the supernatural with relationship aspects than one about relationships with some supernatural aspects. All with a healthy dose of comedy of course. 5. If you want to read someone who agrees with Joss Whedon's feelings about Seinfeld, check out respected Washington Post media critic Tom Shales' rather scathing article on the show and Jerry Seinfeld personally (I still can't believe that The Master and The Maestro are one and the same!): http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/WPlate/1998-04/16/154l-041698-idx.html Jeff Rohaly rohaly@iaw.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 May 1998 14:57:32 -0400 From: Mindy Mason Subject: BUFFY: Re: buffy-digest V2 #256 I'm sure this has already been brought up. They're SUPPOSED to be nasty, and cruel, and enjoy tormenting the weak. Love and friendship and so on are just human contaminants for them. Spike was atypical, for a vampire, in his concern and tenderness toward Drusilla when she was the weak one. But when Spike was the weak one, Drusilla and Angelus just acted normally, for vampires. Can we say "alone", Buffy was so isolated at the Bronze, guess it proves you can be lonely in a crowd. We see Willow is there, but where is Oz, Xander, and Cordelia; surely Willow didn't come by herself. I guess this 'Ben' guy is a possible new love interest for Buffy least give her something to occupy her time while Angel is sucking blood. He seemed like a nice guy, but if he returns I don't think it will be for long. I suppose it is a sign of the end times Willow is giving out love advice. But Buffy was still way to wrapped up in feeling guilty to listen. Funny she seemed to feel worse about Angel now then in 'Phases' and 'BBB', but I suppose it does follow up 'KBD' guilty feelings pretty well. Course we get to see Buffy save the day at the school; what is with all these kids staying at the school late. Buffy seems to still have some "guy" issues to work out. Yes he is back, more maniacal than the Master, deadlier than Dru, more sinister than Spike and more amoral than Angelus; its Principle Snyder. I think he could use more Bran in his diet. Still, the kids and the janitor I would expect to back up Buffy's story; she should be a hero, yet he still gives her a hard time. Surprised that Willow is still the Computer Science teacher, I guess that Snyder likes the cheap labor. Buffy and Xander walking in the hall before the locker monster, dang that was a mighty short skirt Buffy was wearing, and even a higher well placed split in the front. "Did Cordelia win another round in the broom closet?" LOL; me or did it seem to be strangely similar to some of Xander's shots a Buffy and Angel? So The Terrible Trio has a new home, later it was confirmed but I thought that Spike was looking very healthy. Angel is getting worse at acting like a jerk, frankly I'm hoping that Spike will whoop his butt. Sad to see Giles grasping at straws in regards to Jenny; he always gets in trouble when he doesn't listen to his brain. I thought that they figured out the identity of the ghosts pretty easy; could have at least made it look difficult. Bout time we finally see Cordelia; gross the food becomes snakes that is so creepy. Why did Cordy get struck by the snake didn't seem to be any point to it. Well we got the answer to the question we all asked after SHD what does Snyder and the rest of the city leaders know. Seems they know the most of it; they know about the HellMouth and are trying to cover it up. I wonder what kind of person Snyder really is; seems he was hired to specialize for the supernatural problems of Sunnydale. Snyder seemed afraid at the mention of the mayor; was it just the thought of losing his job or is there something more to the mayor than normal. Could make for an interesting future story. Still can't wait to see what Joss has planned for the Principle from Hell--mouth. Seems that Dru was back to her flipped out days; she just freaks me out when she does that. "incoming" LOL. I must give Marsters credit he did something I didn't think was possible he actually made me feel sorry for Spike, and I am not a big Spike fan. Angel was really slamming him hard, and Dru was being quite ribald. So lets exorcise a ghost "don't you need a license";' but I still don't see Xander going in the lunch room with the snakes for no amount of money. Okay we have a seriously ticked off ghost, the floor trying to swallow Willow, Cordy's and Buffy's visions. Then run its the swarm; what was Giles doing with a lighter? Where was Joyce this episode they went back to Buffy's after the Wasps it was late but she wasn't around again. The forgiveness atmosphere of this episode was starting to get a little thick when they finally brought it up. The parallels were pretty obvious, felt like we were being beat over the head with it. Did wonder one thing, during Buffy's tirade about not forgiving someone, was she referring to herself, Angel or both? Okay, so Buffy got semi-possessed by the ghost and went to the school, why did Angel show up? Did he follow her from her house or was he also called in some way by the ghosts. I can't believe he just decided to walk into a school covered in wasps on the off chance that Buffy might be there. I must admit the gender swap was a nice twist, and of course was needed for the story to end. The intercutting between Buffy and Angel and 1955 couple was fun, especially liked Buffy calling Angel a "bitch". SMG did a real good job during this sequence. I guess many got their wishes and saw Buffy and Angel together again, well sort of. After the ghosts went beyond, Angel freaked I guess Love is worse than garlic for a vampire. Since he is a demon and not able to love. Remember the Judge said he had no humanity; yet the Judge was not happy with Spike or Dru. Always love the ending Giles and Buffy chats, and some nice feeler dialogue about forgiveness. Angel trying to wash away the love cooties was pretty funny, going out looking for a "toddler" I hope they don't find one and its almost sunrise, but it is Sunnydale. I said earlier I thought Spike looked much better early in this episode, and he didn't disappoint looks like blond boy is back and very pissed off. I thought that Angel would likely turn on Spike first, now I'm not so sure. I thought this was overall a decent episode not grand, I'm sure the heavy 'Buffy-Angel shippers' will love it. I thought it lacked some of the needed Buffy humor. And a few to many "been there done that" items. Still a pretty good homage to the Exorcist and Amittyville Horror. I thought SMG did a good job, also ASH showed us a different version of Giles in his desperate hope of contacting Jenny. I didn't really think that the Xander and Cordy were up to snuff in this episode. Special thumbs up to JM for his Spike performance which was the best of the season I think. "Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang..ouch that one hurt" Okay Joss we get the message stop dropping the Anvils on our heads. Forgiveness is possible even for the most horrible things. Its very hard and will cause a lot of pain but in the end it is inevitable, and Angel will be back. Even Giles dialogue about forgiveness is given not earned shows he would some day be able to get over Angel killing Jenny. Instills some interesting chances for future plot twists with Buffy and Angel.
