That still doesn't explain his active participation in the > Judge scheme though, really. I get the impression from watching them that Acathala was a lot more powerful than the Judge. Spike had a way to keep the judge under control, effectively--just deny him the chance to feed and he loses his power. Spike can control the demon. Yes, he helps the Judge feast on the living, but that's only to take down Buffy. From what they said about Acathala, I get the feeling had he been released, it's the end of the world as we know it. We all go to hell, including the vamps. There also may not have been any way to control the demon was loosed as they had with the Judge. But that's just my thoughts, I could be wrong. Yet when he went to > Buffy in Becoming 2, he told her that end of the world plans were > all "tough guy talk" and he was against it because he liked this > world. I had thoughts about exactly why Spike and Dru wanted to end the world through the use of The Judge back when Surprise/Innocence aired. In fact, what I said at the time was: I was just thinking. The Judge's goal was to rid the earth of the plague of humanity. Fine. Why would Dru and Spike want to go along with this? They realized that this is what was supposed to happen; they repeatedly said they wanted to destroy the world. But don't they need humans around in order to feed off them? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it has ever been established that Buffyverse vampires feed off anything other than humans. Didn't Angel even keep bags of human blood in the fridge in order to snack? So as much as these vamps hate humans, they need them too. Don't they? End Flashback. The responses I got at the time were that I was misinterpreting the nature of vampires in the Buffyverse. Based on Giles speech in the pilot, vampires were demons that were just biding time until the earth could be rid of the plague of humanity and the original demons, the "Old Ones" could walk and control the earth once again. They didn't need or even really want humans around. So I must admit I felt a bit of vindication after hearing Spike's speech in Becoming. Although I was a bit off base: it came across not that Spike necessarily needed humans around to kill and feed off, but rather that he sort of liked having them around to kill. But now I'm wondering if he was just shooting Buffy a line with that stuff -- see below. > I look at it as he will go along with whatever Dru wants because she > is nuts and he doesn't really believe she can pull it off, but Angel > actually scares him. That still doesn't explain his active > participation in the Judge scheme though, really. Unless he was lying to Buffy about his motivations in wanting to help her stop Angel from unleashing Acathla. Perhaps he didn't really care whether every human soul was sucked into hell or not. He just wanted to get Dru away from Angel and preferably also have Buffy kill Angel. But Spike knew that telling Buffy he was also in favor of not unleashing Acathla in the first place would make it more likely that she would go along with his plan. The reason I see this as a possibility is Spike's actions during the fight between Buffy and Angel. As Spike is carrying Dru out, he sees that Angel has Buffy on the ropes and Spike says something along the lines of "My God. He's going to kill her." Spike knows that means that Acathla will proceed to suck all the human souls into hell. What is his response? He shrugs and continues to carry Dru off. That seems to indicate that he cared more about Dru than he did about whether he would ever get to see his beloved Manchester United play another football game (I bet there's many a wife and girlfriend in England that wishes their partner had the same priorities.) Spike wanted to escape with Dru more than he really wanted to help Buffy stop Acathla and save the world.
