What would have made it funnier? If Larry had been in the ep, and hit on Xander. 3. I Robot, You Jane.... First appearance of Miss Calender, and the first major Willow episode. Doesn't get much better than this? 4. Becoming..... Great acting on all the actos parts, and it gives me such a thrill to see Spike beat the living daylights outta the cop. 5. Halloween.... Spoilers for Prophecy Girl and When She was Bad In the last scene in PG, during the fight with the master Buffy does a standing flip over his head and lands behind him. Buffy isn't bif ob flips during her fights and this one really stood out as one of her more incredible feats. Exactly how does one flip six feet in the air without any method of propulsion? I guess it doesn't matter, since that particular move is almost annoying common on Xena Warrior Princess. Xena flips over the heads of her enemies all the time. By the time they turn around she has already thrown the punch that will knock them out. I also noticed that in When She Was Bad, when asked what she would do about the vamps, Buffy replied, in a cold voice, 'I'm gonna kill 'em all." This line is one of Xena's trademark lines, along with "I have many skills." I'm not saying that Buffy is copying Xena, but we should look out for a sudden rise in the wearing of leather or subtextual glances between our heroine and her red-headed sidekick. :-) Cydney "Stay sane inside insanity." - -Richard O'Brien - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Aug 1998 05:21:56 EDT From: Subject: BUFFY: San Diego Comic Con Favors This is not meant to flame anyone just to inform them a bit. And as we all know she was brought back to life via CPR. Well anyways, She saw herself sort of as not needing anyones help anymore. Its like if you out ran a police car chasing you to give you a ticket for speeding (which I have never ever done by the way..:)) and you got away, you have a chance of doing it again, because you outsmarted them the first time, you sorta of seem invulnerable. I figure it had to be due to the crack at religion since they could have gotten rid of the slut line and kept the next sentence in, but who knows. More generally, I think it's too bad that YTV has the Canadian network rights to Buffy. It's a specialty cable network that exclusively shows children's and youth programming. It belongs on a real broadcast network. The two high profile WB shows for the fall, Felicity and Charmed, have both been picked up by the closest thing Canada has to a nationwide privately-owned broadcast network, CTV, and yet Buffy remains on a children's channel as well as a ragtag band of independent stations. Apparently they're not playing anymore season 1 eps. The other two (Teacher's Pet and The Puppet Show) did badly in the ratings, so they probably didn't want to pay extra to show them for the 4th time. (Networks only get to air an original program 3 times....if they want to show it again, they have to pay for it). The Monday time slot is just an open time slot until the fall when they try out Hyperion Bay. They didn't want to use all their 7th Heaven reruns in that slot because they're going to start showing 7th Heaven twice a week in the fall (so they're saving up the reruns). Dawson's Creek doesn't have enough eps to fill the time slot (plus it reruns badly)...so Buffy was the winner of the Monday summer timeslot by default. - -Rayne - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Aug 1998 07:14:49 PDT From: "Steve Brown" Subject: Re: BUFFY: Favourite Buffy girls I have to give Buffy the top billing because it is her series, but Cordy has shown growth and depth even more so then Willow, IMHO. If at the end of the five seasons, SMG does decide to leave Buffy and move on to a career in movies or somewhere else beacause of the sucess the show has brought her, everything can work out just great. Overall the biggest disappointment It is exactly the fact that everyone is out of character that I like these episodes (KBD and Nightmares). There are times in all of our lives when we do not act in a predetermined way. We all are out of our own character, so to speak. These characters were pushed beyond certain limits (facing childhood fears and nightmares). Also, the fact that some many of them overcome those fears and anxieties is a credit to the actors. The look of resolve on Nicholas' face when he punches the clown is an example. SMG convincing Alyson to let her take the flu virus is another. There was a report on Kevin Williamson (the creator of Dawson's Creek) on CNN Newstand last night. What I found interesting is that he doesn't even claim that the teens on Dawson's Creek or in his movies are meant to be realistic teenagers. His exact quote: "I don't look at teens as teens. I think maybe that's the whole trick to what I do is that they're just smart, sophisticated adult characters and they happen to be 15." That was followed quickly by a quote from Katie Holmes (she plays Joey on Dawson's Creek for you non-watchers): "He understands kids." My response was: Well, which is it? Does he understand teens or does he not even bother trying and instead, just pretend they're adults in the bodies of attractive young actors in order to perform his stated goal: to lure in the teen audience. Personally, I would amend Ms. Holmes' remark and say that Kevin Williamson certainly knows what sells to kids, if nothing else. Back to Buffy, I find this test marketing of Buffy movie ideas rather intriguing. I bet they're struggling to decide whether they want the movie to essentially stand on its own or whether it should just be a big-screen continuation or conclusion of storylines introduced on the show. Since the show does have a pretty small audience -- although it is younger people that dominate the audience, and they go to movies in greater percentages than the rest of the population - -- they will need to attract a substantial number of people that don't watch the show. Does anyone know what the domestic box office was for the original Buffy movie? I keep hearing that it basically tanked, but I've never seen the actual numbers.
