Oh" Subject: BUFFY: Introduction Hello all, I'm new to the list, and I thought I'd introduce myself. My name's Allen, and I'm 25 years old, which I'm guessing puts me near the upper range of the demographics...I don't really remember how I found the list (surfing somewhere), but I'm glad I did. My fiancee and I have been watching the show for probably about six months now, and I think I've seen most of the episodes. One memorable one for me was the one with John Ritter in it...brought back memories of "Three's Company." (like I said, upper range of the demographics) My fiancee and I are drawn to the show for different reasons, I think -- she likes the more "normal" aspects of the show (such as they are), while I go more for the supernatural stuff, especially the characters and plot lines that draw from actual mythology (vampire or otherwise). I'd have to say my favorite character is Giles -- it's sort of refreshing to see a hero who is more of a reserved type, rather than the pure action-oriented types that are more common. Nothing against them, it's just refreshing to see something different. Anyway, I just thought I'd say a quick hello to everyone. Allen - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 16:59:04 -0400 (EDT) From: medianoche@webtv.net Subject: BUFFY:Is it Angel's fault? Hey, everyone. I've read most of the stuff about whether or not Angelus' killings were Angel's fault, and I would like to share my opinion. I watched a movie called The Sleepwalker Killing (I'm pretty sure that was the title) and it was about a man who, in his sleep, drove to his inlaws house, brutally murdered his mother-in-law, and put his father-in-law in the hospital. His father-in-law lived, and of course, testified that his son-in-law was the murderer. However, the son-in-law had a history of sleepwalking, and after all the medical testing, it was confirmed that he was in fact sleepwalking on the night that he murdered his mother-in-law. Anyway, this was a true story and the sleepwalker was aquitted. Therefore, to relate this to Buffy, Angelus is the sleepwalking form of Angel. So in my opinion, if they put Angel on trial for Jenny's death, he would not be held responsible from a legal standpoint. Morally, I just happen to agree that he is not responsible, but that is just one of those questions without a definite answer. (Did anyone else see this movie and connect the analogous situation?) - ---=C7 - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 98 17:10:56 EDT From: (Charles Summers) Subject: re: BUFFY:Is it Angel's fault? I believe the name of the magazine is either "Buffy Official Magazine" or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". It has the cast photo (2nd season) on the front along with a small picture of Seth in the top corner. It has interviews with all the core cast members plus Synder and Joss himself, an episode guide, and stuff like what the cast did before BtVS and during summer break. It also has a lot of stuff you can order (some t-shirts and poster I haven't seen anywhere else ) I can't wait to read the whole thing. I just sorta skimmed over it to let you what all was in it. Someone brought up the fact that Joss has been relying on the vampire-mortal relationships already established in other mediums (ie: Forever Knight, those trashy I-can't-believe-I'm admitting-I've-read-them romances, Interview) and I sort of agree. I think he's glossed over the intricacies that come with establishing a relationship. I, for one, would simply like to know what Angel's last name is! How about his family or his hobbies (he's got to do something besides brood :) What do Buffy and Angel talk about on their "dates?" I'm sure Angel's been to some amazing places whose beauty can be appreciated by his soul. Buffy can share the little things about her day that amuse him or talk about the latest whatever. I think they should know at least some of the regular boyfriend-girlfriend things- favorite colors, personal quirks, whatever. It's kind of corny, but wouldn't it be kind of cute to see Angel helping Buffy with her history homework (what better source could she find? :) Or see him quizzing her on something? Don't get me wrong- I'm a total Buffy-Angel supporter because I see so much potential there. The vampire-mortal thing is a solid frame upon which a great romance can be built. I think my favorite Buffy-Angel scene is from Ted where Buffy is ripping on Ted to Angel or at the end of Halloween where she turns to him support. This has the potential to be a grand, sweeping romance with the little normal things that bring it home. You're absolutely right which proves my point: that an Angel/Buffy relationship is accepted because even though he is older than Giles, he looks young whereas Giles who is 150 years younger than Angel looks older. Like I said this is TV, anything can happen. They touched on an older woman going after a younger man in the Valentine's Day episode when Joyce sank her hooks into Xander. Still, Buffy and Giles raises too many taboos unless they make Giles look younger via time travel magic, etc. You know, like they did in Back To The Future where McFly goes back in time and his mom (who is a beautiful teenage girl) has the hots for him.
