A friend, who's husband works for the local paper's entertainment section, let me look at an advance copy of the book and I've got to say this--don't spend the $14.95 for it. I gave it a cursory glance and saw numerous mistakes (most glaring is that Inca Mummy Girl is simply referred to as Inca Mummy) and that only sporadic bands are listed for the shows. It's also unoffical so that means no photos from the show. The other part that got me was the analysis on each ep was wanting. I guess with all the lively disucsion that goes on here, I've been spoiled a bit. :-) Michael - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 10:08:03 -0400 From: genevieve@gist.com (Genevieve Faulkner) Subject: Re: BUFFY: New Buffy Book Came out today...Not a novel.. ><< Speaking of that, does anyone know when the OFICIAL guide is out?? >Are yout alking about the Offical Watchers Guide? Joyce, on the other hand, has (as far as I can remember) always wanted her daughter to be happy, has been there for Buffy (comforting, not asking too many questions, not prying, etc), and has tried to be a good mom _and_ hold down what seems to be a job with long hours. Buffy, also from that point of view, has _not_ been a very good daughter. She has lied to her Mom, almost gotten her Mom killed by not telling her the truth (what if Angel had decided to kill Joyce in the street?), and interfered with her Mom's social life (yes, okay, he turned out to be a Terminator-lite, but before she knew that, I mean). Buffy had good reasons for all of this, I know. I wonder if this is why Slayers don't have social lives or parents (Kendra, remember, was raised by her Watcher). I think Buffy and Joyce are doing the best they can, _and_ I think people who haven't been parents ought to try it before knocking it. Now I've said my piece. I don't think she's a horrid parent, she can only work with what she knows, which really wasn't and still isn't much. ("Hi, Mom, now that you know I'm the Slayer, Angel really was..") Although Joyce knows that Buffy is capable and fairly level-headed, she will do anything to protect her daughter. (School Hard, anyone?) She's not going to turn a blind eye to this. I'll be surprised if they don't bring Ted up again. I think it'll be interesting to see Joyce and Buffy (hopefully) grow closer because of a single fact that neither of them really want but must deal with - that Buffy is the Chosen One and she *must* kill the vampires. Also the fact that I've been getting hyped for months can't have helped.) We see some very interesting character development, old threads are picked up, and at least one new one (Joyce vs Giles) begun. Buffy's acceptance of her Karma was rather nicely done (not that there won't be beaucoo issues to be worked out). All in all, it seems that 4+ months of R&R helped a lot. We still don't know exactly how a Slayer is activated; if it's something mystical involving a transferance of power or whether a Watcher simply tells his or her Slayer-In-Waiting that she's now up to bat or what. I know that in the context of Anne, Joyce's response to Giles' statement that he didn't make Buffy who she is -- which was "And who exactly is she?" -- made sense, since the episode did deal with Buffy coming to grips with who she is. But part of me was hoping Joyce would ask: "Then who did?" About a week ago, there was some discussion about the level of promotion for Buffy this year. There's an article from the New York Times, reprinted in a Toronto paper today at: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/docs/news/19981003/TheArts/SAFELIY.html It details The WB's promotional strategy of using alternate media such as billboards to promote its shows. It does concentrate mostly on Felicity and some of it is pretty scary. They had focus groups analyse the Felicity billboards which resulted in several digital retouchings of the photograph, including changing Felicity's shoes, her pants, the color of her hair and so on. It describes several of the people responsible for the promotional campaign watching one particular promo trailer and worrying that there was a frown on Keri Russell's (Felicity's) face if you freeze-framed at just the right moment and thus the distorted message -- but she's not really an angry, spoiled brat -- that might send. It also quotes one of the persons involved saying that Buffy's initial promotional campaign failed in that it ended up hitting the wrong demographic.
