Kendra gives the impression that she has been training all her life, having been removed from her parents, etc. So, although this does not answer the question you asked, I hope it gives a little insight on the whole slayer/chosen one mythology. Also, someone made the statement that Buffy was not the true slayer since Kendra had been called and then killed. They commented that this should mean there is another slayer out there. I disagree. Buffy was alive when Kendra was killed. Buffy is the true slayer. She has not lost any of her enhanced strength or senses. Yes, I mentioned senses, I think the slayer has some sort of enhanced senses in regards to the paranormal at least. Buffy calls it her Spider sense and the wiggins alternately. So there you go. The beginning always says for every generation there is a chosen one which implies that a]there can be only one slayer and b]one is born for each generation[my take]. Since slayage is such a risky endeavor it does make sense that there is a whole slew of gals being trained or with capabilities for the job. Kendra's description of her lifestyle made me feel that there are countless girls, trained from infancy[with official slayer handbook], waiting to be chosen or called into duty. We all know that Kendra was activated as the chosen one["slayer"]upon Buffy's death. Her subsequent resuscitation[sp?] had no affect on a new slayer being called....she is IMO officially dead as a slayer and now that her replacement is dead it stands to reason a new slayer will be called into action. I also noticed some things in the episode that were kinda subtle. Like when Buffy first sees Lily and Ricki, Ricki say something like "Yeah, forever. That's the whole point" in reference to the tattoos. Angel had JUST said that in the dream. And, when Ken first met Buffy, when she was running away from all the people, he was saying things like how she had to grow up to fast, and kids get old quick here. It sounds Celtic, but I could be mistaken. I know they're friendship [or more than friendship] rings, but that's about all. I am so happy that they brought Buffy back in one episode, because things were not the same without them together. It's like eating a peanut butter sandwich without the jelly, ham without eggs, Clinton without Starr. < While I wish I could have seen some of time lost in reruns, the Scooby Gang isn't the butt-kickers without their fearless leader, and their fearless leader isn't as fearless without the Scooby Gang to help kick butt. [Willow=Velma, Xander=Scooby, Cordy=Daphne Giles=Freddy [more like Freddy's uncle or something], Oz=Shaggy, or maybe Xander is Shaggy... ] And also, grief runs deep, as someone else said: Buffy may have seemed as upset as if Angel had died, her mom kicked her out, she had been expelled, and had run away to live by herself with nobody to talk to only a few days ago, but must have still been stinging like it HAD only been days. Especially after that dream, realization that he's still in her mind/heart, and waking up to find herself living in a bare, personality-less apartment in a deserted, bleak neighborhood filled with people who had given up on life, no friends, nobody to watch her back... Sure, it toughened her ["I can take care of myself" was her outlook], but it would drag any sane person to the floor, dealing with all that in B2. As for Joyce... She seems conveniently out of the way for Joss's uses, but, as the show is mostly from Buffy's [and the Gang's] Point Of View, parents seem to bhe the last concern over friends, [insert gender spesific]friends, school, and saving the world. This is how I've heard it goes with a majority of teenagers [minus, of course, the bit about saving the world in all literal meaning]. Also--She might realize that her daughter is stronger than she is--I mean, saving the world, all that, but more that Joyce cannot stop her from sneaking out, fighting vampires, leading parts of her life that Joyce doesn't know about, etc like she might have been able to do when Buffy was younger. That her daughter's life is out of her reach, out of her parental control... That must throw her off, that AND having her daughter tell her she's a vampire Slayer. Joyce thought she was nuts [if I'm wrong, please correct me, and if I AM wrong, I am certain someone will catch the slip-up]: "Buffy, you need to get help..." she said, I belive. >I just think that Joyce sees him [Giles] as a person who a]put her daughter's life at risk and b]laid the fate of the world at her feet.< He's a responsible adult, she must have thought, doesn't he SEE the DANGER??? She doesn't care about Masters and Harvests and spells that make people horribly, horribly mean, she cares about her baby, who could get killed out there trying to stab lumber into the organs of a bunch of 'people' who should be, by all rights, DEAD. How COULD a should-be-sensible grown man throw my little girl into such a life-threatening situation?? She's just a child, my little girl. 'Your child is in danger' is one of the worst things that a parent can hear, besides 'she isn't going to make it, Mrs. Summers'...... NOT THAT GILES IS AT FAULT. Oh, one point about "Anne" first: in the teaser, was Oz wearing the $.25 peep show shirt that Xander wore way back at the near-end of IG? I thought it looked a little familiar........maybe they shrunk the shirt by accident or something, and it fit Seth's smaller frame. In every premiere, (thus far, obviously) Buffy struggles with her identity, leading to the acceptance of her destiny and her responsibilities. In WttH, she attempted to start her life over as a regular teenager, but is faced with her responsibility as the slayer. In WSWB (ok, this is a little tougher), she experiences some self-discovery, realizing that she is vulnerable, and is responsible for others (her friends...she fell for the trap and all and the vamps came to take Willow, Giles, etc. away for the Master's resurrection ritual thing) as well as her obligation to kill the vamps. In Anne, she tries to run away and start over her life w/out slayer responsibilities, (ahhhh....I should thesaurusize....I'm getting sick of this word) but realizes her skills and special abilities are necessary to stop the demons and their underground hell. Now some finale similarities: In each finale, Buffy's "killed" someone close to her. In PG, it was the Master (in WSWB she said something like) "we were close; we killed each other, that really promotes togetherness." In Becoming Part 2, she sends Angel to hell. Then in the premieres following these finales, Buffy is confronted with her feelings; fear and resentment, in WSWB, and love and guilt, in Anne, and both are portrayed through nightmares, although in WSWB, some other sequences and stuff showed this, too. Additionally, Buffy spends both summers between the finales and premieres away from Sunnydale, and the people there. In both premiere teasers, there's some vampy action, and some members of the gang (w/out Buffy) discuss school (which makes sense, since it's like the day right after the teaser occurs.) Also, over both summers, Buffy has little to no communication with her friends. Oooooh!!!!!!! Even more! Psyched? In the summer before WSWB, Hank reported that Buffy'd been "distant," and the summer before, and even for some of, Anne, she literally was, in terms of location. (Sorta.) Buffy pushes her friends away from her in WSWB, and REALLY pushes them away in Anne. Whew! I think that's about all I can connect...if any of this didn't make sense, well, then...sorry. I tried, but I may also be slightly delirious b/c I'm still feeling kinda sick. Feel free to disagree, but please don't pounce. Thanks. : ) Can't wait till next week's ep! (I only have a slight idea as to the plot since the preview wasn't shown after Anne. Grr! But, of course, the surprise factor is then upped...) I tend to watch the credits and I noticed several changes in the creative team, and I'm wondering if this will have any noticeable effect. I wonder partly because I'm not sure exactly what some of these job titles really mean and how important these individuals are. In any case, here's what I noticed. For the seond part of last year, the "Executive Story Editors" were Rob DesHotel & Dean Batali and the "Story Editor" was Marti Noxon. DesHotel and Batali are no longer in the credits and are probably gone because I just noticed tonight that they're now co-producers of the ABC series Fantasy Island. They wrote several episodes too, including The Dark Age, Phases and Killed By Death. Hmm, I bet some of you are thinking "good riddance." Well, they did Puppet Show and NKABOTFD too if that helps. Marti Noxon -- the seemingly inconsistent writer of such episodes as Bad Eggs, but also BB&B, Surprise and others -- is now listed as a "Co-producer". Finally, the new "Executive Story Editor" is Jane Espenson and the new "Story Editor" is Doug Petrie. Those are both names I don't recognize from earlier Buffy work, but I could be mistaken. Also, for those of you in the know, what exactly do "Story Editors" do? It can't be as simple as "they edit the stories" can it?
