And I take the first step and I'm back in the apartment complex with the blue walls. "Majore change of scenery Giles" I say, totally oblivouis to the fact I'm in an entirely different place. I step across the threshold and suddenly (Here is the weird part) I'm at niagra falls and I see trout jumping all around and then I see Giles. And get this, He has his head and a fish body! Anyway, the rest of the dream is just running around trying to kill the Giles-fish. I finally do kill it by chopping off his head, and reporters are all around me with lights, cameras, and microphones in my face. One of them says "So tell us Buffy, how did you kill that mutant fish?". Wacking one out of my way I say "I chopped off it's head." Then I'm back in the apartment complex and then I wake up. Exactly, the first-season message of BtVS was "High School is Hell" (built right on top of it's mouth and everything). But the second- season message began with "Work is Hell" (Buffy's lousy waitress job, and folks enslaved in underground sweatshops). (Gee, we're getting the titles of all Matt Groening's Binky books in here). Is this in anticipation of their inevitable graduation? Curious to see if the theme continues. But I wouldn't worry about nightmares for yourself. If you're a gainfully-employed twentysomething, then Ken probably already has you chained to your forge in his little "workshop" and you should be forgetting your former identity and freedom by now, shouldn't you? It's the kids looking ahead to that who are afraid.... BTW, is the new Angel series really supposed to be more "adult"? If so, that's kinda ironic given that many fans (myself included) felt Angel's role was expanded from throwaway-episodic-first-season- monster to full-fledged-regular-cast-member-and-romantic-lead largely to attract the *younger* viewers. Kinda cruel to lure them in and then not let them watch. Or even to pair Angel and Cordelia for that matter.... Maybe "more adult" was my own interpretation, but I really think I read it somewhere. I know the general idea behind the descriptions I've read is that Angel is supposed to be less light-hearted around the edges and darker than Buffy. Two thoughts: 1) Gee, aren't "less light-hearted" and "darker" just synonyms for "more adult" anyway; and 2) Buffy's been dark enough in its own right of late. If anyone wants to see an unrecognizable Buffy (the character especially), go back and watch Never Kill a Boy on the First Date. >many fans (myself included) felt Angel's role was expanded from >throwaway-episodic-first-season-monster to full-fledged-regular-cast- >member-and-romantic-lead largely to attract the *younger* viewers. >Kinda cruel to lure them in and then not let them watch. I hadn't thought about it that way, but it wouldn't be the first time that a TV show was marketed a little unfairly to attract a specific viewer-type. But once Angel returns to Buffy this season, I don't think he's going to be the romantic lead again anyway. Younger people, and others, may tune it wanting to see that but I personally don't think it's going to happen. Angel has sort of served his purpose -- all this angst that we saw in Dead Man's Party really does trace back to him either directly or indirectly. >Or even to pair Angel and Cordelia for that matter.... Let's see, how could they lure in a viewer like me and then not let me watch? Well, they could put Cordelia on the new series, but then take away her sarcastic, clueless-but-not-so-clueless sense of humor, make her attracted to Angel, and dress in her something out of Little House on the Prairie. Though there's an interesting irony; the actual EFFECT of the spell was just to cause suffering. If the spell had failed, Buffy would have skewered evil Angel, sending him and Acathla to Hell, saving the world anyway. The spell only gave Buffy the heartbreak of getting HER Angel back and then having to send him to Hell. So once the gang discusses the whole thing, will Willow feel that she has to apologize to Buffy, because even though her intentions were good, she ended up putting Buffy through all that? Or Xander might argue that he was right, that Willow shouldn't have done the spell, because all it did was make Buffy suffer. On a related note, what if the spirit or whatever that possessed Willow during the spell wasn't Jenny, but was something malevolent? Actually, I never thought it was Jenny's spirit that possessed Willow, but rather the spirit of the ancient Romany (perhaps the old woman who spoke the curse originally?), still eager for social justice against evil Angelus after all these years. And I figured that if Jenny had done the curse herself, she would have been possessed in the same way. Whether Buffy and "good" Angel suffered or not would be irrelevant to the ancient ones, so long as the Evil One was stopped and punished. I suppose it's possible the possessing spirit might have known that Angel would be hellbound following the restoration, but he would have suffered even if he weren't (just in reflecting on what he'd done). I pictured the curse as somewhat robotic, "See evil vampire, restore soul, make him pay!" But otherwise, I'm not so sure... Angel/Buffy romance has been the cash cow of BtVS. It has funded the quirkier, less popular eps like "Killed by Death" and "Go Fish" by keeping overall ratings decent, imo. Some people think these recent token daylight dream exchanges between Buffy and Angel are to meet contractual obligations for David as a regular cast member during a period where the story arc doesn't really call for his presence.
