The show uses a similar device that Buffy has used, trying to make all of a teen's worst social nightmares (that normally don't come true) come true in a very graphic way. F's crush gets a copy of the admission essay she wrote all about him. And her personal-super-secret tape to her friend about sexuality gets broadcast to the whole dorm party over the sound system (quite incredible that scene). BtVS used to do a little more of that stuff in Season One, Buffy's embarrassment, usually in relation to the judgemental Cordy (nearly killing Cordy, the slaying equipment spilling on the floor in the school hall, etc...). But now that Cordy is part of the gang and the drama has become grander, those small sweet jokes about social embarrassment (a *huge* teenage fixation) seemed to have lessened. Oh well, things change.... (Spoilers for "Faith, Hope and Trick") Well, this episode was pretty entertaining (though not quite as haunting to me as say, "Anne," although that scene of Angel being dropped as a naked newborn from Hell [even though it looked like Heaven], was quite engaging *w*). Anyone reminded of the legend of Tam Lin?...intercept the Fairy Queen's parade to Hell and pull the rider down (the heroine's lover, Tam Lin) who then reverts to being a naked knight. 1) Classic scene where Mr. Trick grabs the fast food server from the drive-in window. Vintage BtVS, you get lulled into a calm and then shocked by something ironic and unexpected. Kakistos' gory description of what he wanted to do to Faith would normally be followed by someone expressing a LOSS of appetite. Instead the congenial, well-mannered Trick *becomes* hungry and ravages the person he was just being friendly with. b. Moreover, I was loving the whole "fast-food servers are themselves the fast-food served" metaphor with the drive-in and pizza guys. Low-wage fast-food workers do tend to be fodder for our class-conscious culture (taking lots of abuse, etc...) but seldom is that distinction rendered so graphically as it was here (eaten by men in a limousine, no less). c. And what's up with Joss and pizza guys? Way back in season one, Willow's warning to Xander about not ending up like the guy who swept the pizza joint and asked where all the cool parties were. Cordy's jab at Xander about all the cool places his pizza delivery career would take him (we now know where it would take him). Now this hapless pizza guy and Joss's comments about the hypothetical gag show "Pizza Man" (the cosmopolitan victim) on the Posting Board. 2) Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's cool that Mr. Trick is technologically savvy (as was Spike with the Camcorder). But isn't this going to keep straining our suspension of disbelief about why vamps aren't using high-tech weapons against Buffy? She is using rocket launchers on them and they still fight hand-to-hand. b. The only time this has been broached was where Darla shot at Buffy in the Bronze (and not too intelligently at that). If Mr. Trick is hip to T-3 lines and fiber optics, then certainly he has heard about automatic weapons. It's getting harder and harder for me to rationalize that away. c. With archaic fiends like Master, Kakistos, and the Judge, one can say it's an ideological thing (or just backwards thinking). Kinda like Mathias and his followers in the movie version of "The Omega Man" (though not the Matheson original, "I Am Legend"). But with these "modern" vamps, there's really no excuse. Lisa "Faith, Hope and Trick"? Hmmmm, sounds a little like "Trick or Treat" as we approach the end of October (and is there another much-ballyhooed Halloween episode in the offing this season?). - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 15:16:14 EDT From: Krystey567@aol.com Subject: BUFFY: The retreat Is it a possibility there was no retreat at the time? Oh yeah, Willow used that line in last season's opener (during her movie quote game with Xander), and it *is* sort of a parallel for the whole Buffy/Angel sexual relationship to date. For the record, I love to take credit for Willow's use of that Sarah Connor line in "WSWB" (rightly or not) because I used it in a "Name That Movie Quote" panel at BayCon '97 way back in May of '97. Turns out that Joss was at that Con (before many of us knew what he looked like) merely as a wandering anonymous visitor (invited by a fellow Buffy-fan and BayCon staff member, Seanan McGuire, who may still lurk this list). I like to think that Joss wandered into our boisterous movie quote game and was so inspired by what he saw that he included it in the following season's opener (hey, we even had a little kid drop the dorky "Use the Force, Luke" quote, making everyone groan).
