Critic Ken Tucker does "Buffy" a great service by giving the show yet another rave review (in this case, and "A" grade, whereas "Charmed got a "B+") in the "legitimate" press. Also, he is in his forties, so it's gratifying to see that Buffy's over-30 appeal (and I can speak to this personally) is so strong. First, I got the new TV Guide with the interview with David and Keri. He seems like he must be a lot of fun to be around, not to mention he's so cute! The photo of them at the beginning of the story, in the car, is great! It does say he and Ingrid have been married for a year and he calls her "a loving force." Wonder what that means? Anyway, it also says he's gotten a new Mercedes. Good for him. There is also a fold out of all the up and comers and of course the whole cast is included. Then it has a write up on Seth. Then my mail came and the new (Nov 6) Entertainment Weekly came. It has a small picture of SMG and Shannen Doherty on the cover with the headline "Buffy & Shannon Who's Got the Power?" There was a great write up about Buffy and Charmed. Buffy got an A, Charmed got a B. Way to go Buffy! Seems like our show is finally getting the credit and respect it deserves. Finally, a question about the MTV special. All the cast members were with each other 2 on 2 or 2 on 3 -- David with Aly, Nick, Seth, Charisma. Aly and Seth. David and Charisma. David and Nick, etc. How come Sarah wasn't with any of them like that and only with the entire group? Did you notice that Nick was wearing different clothes for some of the intros? That also led me to this belief. S P O I L E R S S P A C E Review: This was a great episode in my books, and will be enjoyed by Willow-and-Xander relationshippers, like me. The story was still not up to my usual expectations of Buffy, though. "Homecoming", Episode 4 Season 3 We open at The Bronze, where Buffy and Scott are dancing. They kiss, and Buffy leaves to go to the old mansion. Angel paces around inside it, still slightly animal-like. Buffy enters and hands him a bag containing a glass of blood. She asks how he is, and he says that it hurts less. Buffy explains to him that she hasn't told Giles that he's back, since he wouldn't understand. She then drops her bombshell, she's seeing someone else. Angel whips around, and she tells him how she needs someone she can depend upon, and trust. The scene suddenly switches to the next morning at school, where Scott tells Buffy that he doesn't think they should see each other anymore. Buffy tries to stop him, but he breaks up with her. Once again, the scene switches slightly, but we still see Buffy, only through a pair of binoculars. Two men in a van record her image, and send it out through a phone line. In another large room, we see a new man, and Mr Trick. Mr Trick tells the man, as they observe Buffy, that that's her. [Opening Credits & Commercial] Inside City Hall, a secretary enters the Mayor's office. He hand the mayor a report, which the mayor sniffs. He asks to see the secretary's hands, and tells him that they should be cleaner. The secretary leaves with a bewildered expression on his face. It's photo day at Sunnydale High, and we see the gang get several odd photos taken. Cordellia checks out the competition for the upcoming Homecoming, and is asked to remind Buffy that today is picture day. In the Library Buffy and Faith spar, with unusual strength even for Buffy. Faith comments on this, telling her that she should get dumped more often. They talk about the dance, and finally decide to go together. Cordellia is about to enter the Library, when she sees two guys and runs off to talk to them. Later that day, Buffy talks to a teacher asking her for a letter of recommendation so she can stay in school. The teacher doesn't recognize Buffy at all, which depresses her. At lunch the gang (minus Cordellia) eat in the cafeteria, and Buffy remarks that now she'll only have a small yearbook picture for people to remember her by. Xander informs her that she doesn't even have that, since she missed pictures. Buffy confronts Cordellia on her not informing her about picture day, and the two exchange insults. Buffy gets so angry that she announces she's entering the Homecoming against Cordellia. We see the large room we saw earlier, with Mr Trick. With him are two Germans with guns, the same two who have been observing her, a spiked monster, and a male and female vampire. The male vamp is the brother from Bad Eggs (season 2), who survived. Mr. Trick tells that that the game will begin soon, with Buffy and Faith as the targets in SlayerFest 98. [Commercial] In Willow's bedroom, Willow and Xander dress. Willow tries on different clothes to get his opinion, while Xander puts on his Tuxedo. They talk for awhile, with Willow changing behind her divider, until Willow emerges wearing a stunning black dress. Xander just stares at her, and tells her that she's gorgeous. Willow replies in kind, and they both remark on how lucky Cordellia and Oz are, respectively. Willow worries about the dancing, and Xander volunteers to help her. They dance, until they suddenly stop and kiss each other. They kiss for about 15 seconds, until they both quickly break apart, panicking. They try to deny what happened, and Xander says that they need to get out of their clothes. After thinking about what he said, he tells her that he didn't mean together. In the Library, Buffy plans her strategy for winning Homecoming. On a board she has her competition with their weaknesses. Willow and Oz sit together, with Xander sitting beside her. They are extremely uncomfortable. Buffy comments on how she should win, since she did before. She had friends back then, she remarks, but then comments on the number of people she had at her welcome back party. Willow reminds her that they were killed by Zombies, though. Buffy assigns tasks to each of them, when Cordellia enters. They two competitors decide that they should still be friends, until Cordellia takes Willow, Xander and Oz away, who had already agreed to help her. Buffy is alone, until Giles enters. She says that it's still fun, until the glass she's holding in her hand shatters. The next few scenes alternate between the campaigns for Homecoming, and the preparation for SlayerFest 98. Buffy runs into Willow, who is nervous. Buffy tells her that she still considers Willow her friend, since she saved Willow's life so many times. Willow winces and says, "What do you want". Buffy asks for access to Cordellia's Homecoming database, and Willow gives it to her. The two Germans in the van continue to observe Buffy. [This section can't be explained well, you'll just have to watch it. :)] Willow and Xander rest on Willow's bed, and talk about how it was the worst thing. Xander agrees with her, saying that he sees Willow in a whole new way now. Willow explains that she was talking about Buffy and Cordellia, and Xander stammers out that he was too. Willow makes a comment about Xander and her, which Xander takes as a reference to Buffy and Cordellia, until Willow says it was about them. Buffy leaves her house and enters a Limousine in the driveway, with Cordellia in it. Cordellia hands her a card from Faith, which explains that they'll be left alone to solve their problems. In the front of the car the driver, one of the Germans, puts a headphone in his ear. The car drives though the country, until it stops in a forest. Buffy and Cordellia exit the limousine, confused. A TV and VCR is resting nearby, with a sign saying "play" on it. Buffy plays the tape, which consists of Mr. Trick explaining to them, Buffy and Faith, that they're in SlayerFest 98 and have 30 seconds to run. Cordellia has been confused with Faith, and tries to explain it to thin air until the TV explodes and they start running. The Homecoming continues in The Bronze, with Willow and Xander standing uncomfortably next to each other. Faith meets them, until she sees Scott dancing with another girl and leaves the camera view. Giles rushes in, dressed in a Tuxedo, and tells that that something is wrong with Buffy. After he sees Xander and Willow's startled expressions, he tells that that he was just joking. Buffy and Cordellia continue to run through the forest, until Cordellia stops her from running into a foot trap. A guy with a shotgun is behind her, and Buffy throws the trap at him. His foot trapped, he tells them who's hunting them, and Cordellia tried to tell him that she's not Faith. Before she can finish we see two knives implant themselves in the tree in front of her. Back at the Bronze, Faith walks up to Scott and pretends to be his girlfriend, breaking him up with the other girl, and leaves. Xander and Willow sit in chairs, slightly turned apart from each other. Buffy and Cordellia break into an old house, where Buffy insults Cordellia. Cordellia says that Buffy's only trying to make her mad so that she won't be scared, and it worked. She searches for a weapon, and gets a spatula. She tells Buffy that she's actually in love with Xander, and Buffy calls Giles. The man who's helping the two Germans tracks them on a computer when the two use the phone, and cuts her off. Giles gets her message, and runs out to help. Still in the old house, Buffy explains to Cordellia why she wanted to win Homecoming, so that she could tell people that she actually lived and had friends later. The scaly demon breaks into the house, as Cordellia assaults him with her spatula. Buffy drops the gun, and Cordellia grabs it. She fires it, and manages to hit a bottle on a shelf. Buffy yells at her to use her spatula instead. The two Germans load a grenade launcher, and target the old house. The grenade lands in the house, and Buffy throws her and Cordellia out a window. The demon tries to jump out of another window, but fails when he finds it boarded up. The house explodes, and the two competitors run away. In the Library, we see Gorches and his girlfriend, with Giles unconscious on the floor. The man continue to track Buffy and Cordellia on the computer screen, leading the Germans to them. Mr. Trick continues to watch, until he answers a knock at the door. He opens it and is arrested by the police, who take him away. Buffy and Cordellia enter the school, and the Library. They're attacked by the two vamps, and Buffy is knocked out by the female, who dusts. Gorches is left, and Cordellia confronts him, insulting him. She finally scares him, and he runs away. Soon after Buffy and Giles have awoken, and they sit in the Library. They learn that the corsages they're wearing didn't come from the gang, and realize that they're being tracked by them. At the same time the hear a door slam open in the hallway, and Buffy leaves. They Germans see her and run after her, until she splits them up. The man continues to track them, giving the Germans directions on where to shoot. Buffy, behind one of them, throws the corsages now wrapped in wet paper at one of them, and it sticks to his back. The man tells them to fire, and they both begin to shoot each other. Soon both lie dead on the floor. Mr. Trick enters the mayor's office, who tells Mr. Trick that he knows he's a vampire. He talks about SlayerFest, and says that he needs someone like that in his town, to keep people in place. He offers no option, making Mr. Trick part of his team. Back at Homecoming, the winner is about to be announced when Cordellia and Buffy enter, dirty and clothes torn. Buffy tells them that they shouldn't mess with Cordellia, and Xander laughingly agrees. The vote turns about to be a tie.....between Holly and Michelle. As the two girls give their teary thanks, Buffy and Cordellia turn and leave.
