I've updated the Buffy Music Pages to include song info from "Band Candy." New bands include Mad Cow, Every Bit of Nothing, and Cream. Cream is an old 70s band. You can hear Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses" when Giles and Joyce are listening to records in his apartment (the song was written by Eric Clapton). Mad Cow and Every Bit of Nothing are touring in the LA area, so check them out if you get the chance. Oh, and the new Four Star Mary song is "Violent." It's off their as yet unreleased second CD. Last night's episode, Band Candy, got a 5.7 rating/8 share in the overnight Nielsens for households. Overnight ratings are based on viewing in only 44 of the largest television markets, not the nation as a whole. Part one of a special two-part Felicity received a 5.0 rating/7 share in the hour after Buffy, down yet again from a 5.3/8 last week. As an indication of what The WB is capable of, Monday's heavily-promoted anti-gun episode of 7th Heaven scored an all-time record high rating for the network: an 8.4/13 in the overnights and a 6.0/9 in the nationals. For comparison's sake, the highest numbers ever for Buffy are from Innocence: a 6.7/10 overnight and a 5.2/8 national. That 5.7/8 is down 7% in rating and one share point from the 6.1/9 for Homecoming. It does represent a 6% increase in rating from one year ago -- Nov. 10, 1997 (a Monday) -- when The Dark Age received about a 5.4/8 in the overnight markets in which it aired (specifically, a 5.3/8 for the first half hour and a 5.4/8 for the second half hour). Here are the overnight numbers for the last few episodes: November 3, Homecoming: 6.1/9 October 27, Halloween (2nd repeat): 4.9/8 October 20, Beauty and the Beasts: 6.2/10 Jeff Rohaly rohaly@iaw.com http://www.iaw.on.ca/~rohaly/tvschedule/buffy.html (archive of Buffy's Nielsen ratings) - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 13:23:31 EST From: WiddleOne@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: Band Candy comments Jeff wrote: > But why did Trick go so willingly with > those cops last week when they came to drag him to their initial meeting? > He could have snapped both their necks like twigs. MoonCat - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 14:19:05 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Hickerson Subject: BUFFY: Review--"Band Candy" **SPOILERS!!** Warning: If SPOILERS for the latest episode of "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer," 'Band Candy' make you feel a wee bit uncomfortable, I'd suggest turning back now. There are major SPOILERS just ahead.... In short: The first disappointment of season three. On paper, there was a lot to look forward to in Band Candy. A chance to see Buffy have to deal with all of the adults in town acting like teenagers just seemed too good and idea to pass up. And while Band Candy did reasonably well with this plotline, I still came away with a sense of disappointment. A large part of it was that Band Candy is essentail what Bad Eggs was year--an episode that is intended to be in a holding pattern as we get set up for major events to fall into place. Last year it was waiting until we saw Angel's fall from grace so to speak in Surprise and Innocence. This year, I suspect, it's a holding pattern until such time as the Scooby gang discovers our favorite bloodsucker is back. Until then, we've got to find an amusing, fun way to spend an hour with these characters. And like Bad Eggs, or even Reptile Boy last year, Band Candy tried very hard to be a good, entertaining distractions. Don't get me wrong--I like an episode that takes place outside the established mega-heavy events we see each week on Buffy. But I like them when done well and with some dash. And in some spots, Band Candy did quite well. Seeing Joyce, Giles, and Snyder revert back to teenagers was really a treat. I got a major kick out of Synder's desparate urge to be around the Scooby gang as they tried to figure out what was going on. Armin Shimmerman turned in one of his best Buffy performances yet and I think part of it was that we were allowed to see a different side of Synder than we normally do. It's easy to see that he was having fun just being a part of the gang rather than their chief tormentor. I'm not saying we should see it every week, but this time it was fun. Part of why it worked so well for Snyder is thta he's a one dimensional character. So to see him playing against type is far more fun and interesting. On the other hand, you've got two far more three dimensional characters in Joyce and Giles and so to see them play against type as one dimensional characters wasn't as much fun. I think a great deal of this comes from the fact that we know Giles has a dark past and I expected to see more. Having him as sort of a James Dean from Rebel Without a Cause with an accent was nice at first, but a part of me kept yearning for his darker side to come through. To see why Ethan was truly afraid of him and his past. Dialogue such as "Knock his teeth down his throat because you're my slayer," fell a bit flat. It would have been far better for me to see Giles being the one to threaten Ethan when it came time to extract information from him. As for seeing Ethan come back, I'm torn. Part of me liked seeing him again (and it makes the reason for WB repeating Halloween two weeks ago seem that much stronger), but another part of was disappointed. After his past two appearances in Dark Age and Halloween, I found Ethan to be a far darker, more malevolent character than we saw here. It was like Ethan lite in a way--a way to pay tribute to the history the show has built. And in looking back, I'm not sure if maybe having Marcy's mom be the one behind the spell might not have been good idea. (Other than that she's trapped in a statue, but I suppose you coudl get around that, if you wanted) I think part of the reason that I didn't really like Ethan's return as much as I would have liked was that it was part of one of the lesser monster plots I've seen since Reptile Boy or Killed by Death. In fact, the sacrifice of the babies really reminded me of Reptile Boy, esp. in the way once the monster appeared on screen it was easily dealt with. I suppose I could have lived with this plotline a bit more if maybe the implication that Trick brought the creature out to have Buffy take it out was a bit more clear. I liked Mr. Trick when he first appeared, but I found him a bit dull in this episode. It made me yearn for Spike and his dark, duplicitous nature. And it just seemed to be that idea of having to sacrifice the babies came too far out of left field. Don't get me wrong, it was still a shocking moment and one that made you really disguisted with our bad guys. But it would have been a bit more shocking had we seen hints of it before. I know that the mayor and Trick disussed the plan in his office early on, but someone the idea they were hatching didn't seem as insidious as it later turned out to be in that moment. Not enough foreshadowing for me and that's something Buffy is usually really good at. But, to say that I came away from the episode totally disappointed would be false. There were isolated things I really liked. For one, I loved the concept of Buffy playing all of her friends off of each other to sneak off to see Angel. That part worked really well as did everyone's reactions. Also, seeing Buffy and her mom's discussions about her driving were a nice carryover not only of some of the underlying themes for this season but also of the conversation Buffy and her mother had in Suprise. That part really worked and clicked for me. As did the Xander and Willow footsy scene. This provided the biggest laugh of the night when the table jumped as their feet flew apart. I wonder how long they will keep this going. I am not sure if I want it resolved quickly since it's providing some really great character moments and nice laughs along the way. But, these points couldn't save the episode for me. In the end, I'm forced to look on it as a good try, but not quite a cigar this time. I can only hope that next week the show gets back on track. So, that's about it except for a few small things... --Thank goodness they are finding out Angel is back next week. I can't take any more scenes like we had last night with him. Here's my beef--just because he's in the opening credits, we don't have to see him every week! If he adds nothing to the plot, leave him out. Star Trek does it all the time. X-Files has had whole eps without Mulder or Scully. Why not one without Angel? --The only thing the Angel scene brought to mind was the Klingon self-defense exercied Worf does on Star Trek. --So how many favors does the mayor owe and to whom? Interesting. --So something happened between Giles and Joyce, eh? Interesting. I also am a bit annoyed that Joyce's anger at Giles (she said she blames him for Buffy's leaving) has been dropped. I was hoping to see this explored a bit more. Well, that's about it for now. I wanted to like Band Candy a great deal. But in the end, it's a major disappointment. All right, here's the deal. I just got home from seeing Cruel Inventions and all I can say is WHAT AN INCREDIBLY AWESOME FILM. This movie is destined to be a teen classic. It's sick, twisted, sad and incredibly funny. Without question the best teen film since, dare I say, "The Breakfast Club." No, I'm not on drugs, it's that good. For all of you who don't know what it's about, I'll try my best to surmise. It's an update of Dangerous Liaisons. Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Geller play the John Malkovich and Glenn Close roles. They are rich and wicked step-siblings named Sebastian and Kathryn. While Sebastian gets his kicks by screwing his therapist's daughter and putting nude pictures of her on the Internet, Kathryn attempts to turn this hot moronic chick (Cecile - the Uma Thurman role) into a slut. Bored with his summer vacation, Sebastian brings home Seventeen Magazine with Jennifer Love Hewitt on the cover (nice inside joke, guys). In the magazine is an article by a high school virgin Annette (Reese Witherspoon in the Michelle Pfeiffer role) stating that she wants to wait for marriage before losing her virginity. Sebastain learns Annette is attending school with them in the fall. He wants to screw her before school starts so he can cement his reputation as the school cad. Kathryn thinks he can't succeed and they make a bet. If he doesn't nail Annette then Kathryn wins his supercool car. If Sebastain wins the bet then he gets to screw Kathryn "anywhere he wants." (No, I'm not making this up. A major studio made an expensive teen movie where the plot revolves around Buffy getting screwed in the a**... works for me). The rest of the movie revolves around Sebastian trying to seduce Annette and Kathryn trying to turn Cecile into a slut. The plot takes a tragic turn in the end when Sebastian actually falls in love with Annette, but I don't want to give it away. Here are some highlights, though: 1. Kathryn teaches Cecile how to French Kiss. (This scene is destind to be the leading DVD ma********on scene of all time. The chick playing Cecile is just as cute as Buffy. Go girls go). 2. Sebastian and Josh Jackson (Pacey from Dawson's Creek) blackmail a gay football player. Josh is outstanding as a gay drug dealing preppy. 3. Sebastian turns Cecile into a slut when he gets her drunk and licks her you-know-what. 4. Kathryn shows off her crucifix to her parent's friends. The crucifix turns out to be a cocaine vial. Yes folks, the vampire slayer is a coke freak. I know I'm doing a crappy job explaining the film, but trust me, it's great. All the actors are amazing. I'm totally serious when I say Sarah Michelle Geller could get nominated for an Oscar. She so evil in the movie. As for Ryan, he's great, too. I hated "54" but in this movie he's incredible. The chemistry between them is fantastic. They must've taken a lot of acting lessons since "I Know What You Did Last Summer." As for the rest of the film, the dialogue is the most outrageous since "Heathers." My one complaint is that the only nudity is Sebastian's a**. For a movie that talks about sex non-stop it would have been nice to see a little Geller-Witherspoon t***y. The reason why I mention "The Breakfast Club," is because the movie combines comedy and drama so well. I don't know when the movie is coming out, but you heard it here first. Cruel Intentions is going to shock the country. Kids are going to love it and parents are going to hate it. I don't know who the film mak er is, but he's a very sick person with a wicked sense of humor and sex and drugs on his brain. ****************************************************************************** **** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ and here's another review... Cruel Intentions" - A Review by 'Jen' Last night, I was in Woodland Hills for the screening of Cruel Intentions. If you haven't heard anything about this film, it's a modernized adaptation of "Les Liaison Dangereuses", which has already found its way to the big screen several times before, most impressively with Dangerous Liaisons. Dangerous Liaisons is everything a film adaptation of this story should be - decadent, sinfully pleasurable and brought to realization with actors (including Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman) who have the range and experience to convey the depth of deception and longing. Unfortunately, Cruel Intentions fails in almost every conceivable way to be anything that fine film was. Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as the dastardly leads, the film makes the HUGE mistake of setting this in the supposedly "hip" world of teenagers. Phrases like "eat me" pepper the film as though this alone will make the film contemporary and fun. It doesn't. Set in NYC and a rich country home in CT, the surroundings are gorgeous.... as gorgeous and empty as the young actors here. The one hope for Cruel Intentions lied in its third lead - Reese Witherspoon. This girl DESERVES to be on the radar - she's fantastic. From her premiere in Man in the Moon to Pleasantville and of course, her tour de farce in Freeway, this a girl who can ACT. Unfortunately, even Reese's acting chops and sweet blue eyes can't save this garbage. Chalk up another "Twilight" on Ms. Witherspoon's resume. Written and directed by Roger Kumble, who you may know as the writer of National Lampoon's Senior Trip (yep, that's the best this guy did prior to this tripe), the actors and situations are encouraged to be campy. There is no wit, no subtelty, no finesse in any of it. Scenes and characters are introduced for no other purpose than to try to shock the audience. Cheap ploys such as Joshua Jackson (of Dawson's Creek fame) portraying a stereotyped version of a gay man and a kiss between two of the female characters. Another fatal mistake is made when Kumble tinkers with the ending of this classic story. The point of the tale is now missing. Obviously, this film was made to make a quick capitalization on the teenage mania sweeping Hollywood at the moment. Unfortunately, it decided to sacrifice intelligence in the bargain. Assuming that your targeted audience is stupid is no way to sell tickets. According to the speech from the screening people at the beginning, we were the first audience to view the film. If only we were to be the last. This film is supposed to be released in February of 1999 so the time to fix this thing up is limited. One can only hope that with the inevitable bombing of this film, filmmakers will finally start making SMART films... no matter who the film is targeted for. Pass on this one, folks. Reese doesn't even get naked. - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 07:24:32 PST From: "Kevin Taylor" Subject: Re: BUFFY: Next week's preview >Xander is right back at the bottom of the list, where he belongs. >Though I don't usually rant about him, there's no way I can't right >now. That boy angers the hell out of me! > Well, I don't know about the bottom of my list, but I'm really hating the Xander character so far this year. The only reason he isn't on the bottom of my list is old loyalties from the past 2 seasons. I don't post often to the list, but I like to read what other people have to say. I've had enough. Xander has been one of my favorite characters for 2 seasons. I could always rationalize his actions, and at least understand them to some degree. Of course, he would do things to irritate me from time to time, but in the end, we'd always go back to the goofy character he'd always been and was out there risking his neck every show. But this year, we've seen almost nothing of that side of Xander. There are almost no scenes that show Xander in a good light. What happened and why is Joss writing his character in such a way? Xander has done nothing but annoy the fool out of me. He's turned into the biggest, irresponsible jerk in the world. The only time we've seen a glimpse of the old Xander is in the "Homecoming" episode. The whole "Xander hates Angel" thing is not only VERY old and annoying, but Xander's done and said a number of other things that just make me mad! I'm really hoping that Joss is going somewhere with this, and we will see some development in Xander's character soon. I would hate to think that he's turned one of my favorate characters into a huge jerk for nothing. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 15:04:35 -0500 From: "Allen J. I tend to be a bit bookish, and have Giles' wry sense of humor. One thing I don't share with him, though, is his aversion to computers. With respect to my attitudes towards computers and technology in general, I'm probably more like Mr. Trick. As an aside, if we're looking beyond BtVS, I'm definitely most like John "The Biscuit" Cage on Ally McBeal (in fact, more than a few people have commented on the resemblance). We're both sort of quirky, introverted lawyers...and we both wear orthopedic shoes that squeak on certain floors. :) Allen - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 15:08:34 -0500 From: "Allen J. And more courage than would be required of Buffy -- not to suggest at all that Buffy is anything other than courageous, but Buffy is a more even match for Lyle Gorch. It's a much more dangerous proposition for Cordy -- if Lyle called her on her bluff, there's a good chance she would've been finished. Great build up to next week... Well, from the way I interpreted it, Buffy *was* thinking 'I won't have an excuse to see you anymore,' but Angel might not have known that, and was thinking, 'yeah, it will be better when you don't have to help me around and bring me pig's blood.' You notice he doesn't drink it in front of her, so I'm sure he'd love to do this stuff on his own. But he didn't mean he didn't want to see her anymore, but I think that's what Buffy thought he meant. I don't know, I'm rambling. I'm sorry this might be a dumb Question ,but what was the themeto last night's buffy ? Just a question because today some one put somthing oin my mind like they said that T.V. is all a bout sex and violence but when i really thought about it it seemed Buffy's topic was about sex, violence and immurturaty (if i spelled that right) But tell me something about this, am i crasy? or dose someone else think this ? - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 09:56:40 -0400 From: Donna Brown Subject: BUFFY: re:Band Candy > First off~ > This was one of the funniest episodes of Buffy ever, and by far the best = > episode this season. > I have to agree. After the Canadians weighed in yesterday with rather wan reviews of the ep, I was expecting to be underwhelmed again (this season hasn't rocked my world. . . yet). I was happily surprised -- "Band Candy" kept its targets low and hit way over them as a result. There wasn't a focus on advancing the major plot threads, so the PTB had fun instead. All of the actors were stellar (particularly enjoyed the teenage throwbacks Snyder and Giles), the dialogue was extra-zingy, and the scene where Buffy clocked Ethan to the great delight of Ripper was priceless. Looking forward to re-viewing it tonight with my 13-year-old daughter, who received the worst punishment ever when I sent her to bed 5 minutes into "Buffy" for mouthing off (that'll teach her). speaking of (and sorry to go off-topic), I wrote to WB about 6 weeks ago asking for an autographed photo of SMG for my daughter, hoping it'd arrive by Christmas. It showed up last Thursday -- on her birthday. As you can imagine, she was thrilled. Also, she's probably the only kid with a "Buffy" bus tail hanging in her room. My friend sells media to mass transit, and scored a bus ad/poster of Buffy and Angel that says "Love is immortal" that's probably 7 feet wide and 3 feet high. very cool - - ------------------------------ End of buffy-digest V2 #566 *************************** To subscribe to buffy or buffy-digest, send the command subscribe buffy-digest or subscribe buffy to majordomo@xmission.com.
