Well, remember, there was no mention of Spike and/or Dru up to this point in the season -- before 'Band Candy' there was no referance to Ethan, either, and we haven't heard anything about Jenny (Save for the snide comment of Xander's). I get the feeling that, when you live in Sunnydale, you put almost anyone you can't see out of your head. > >accepted her at her word. Also (to add to Jeff's stellar comments below), remember that this _is_ supposed to be a secret society. Having someone show up that can say 'hello, I'm Faith's new Watcher, yo Giles, wassup?' has to be a pretty good sign of honesty. What actually bothered me was that he didn't recognize her -- with the amount of training Watchers must require, I can't imagine him not knowing all the others, at least in England. > I think it can be justified because of his less-than-stellar status among > Watchers -- he's never been invited to that retreat, likely because of his Although one does have to wonder, if he's that suckilicious, why they actually assigned him to a Slayer at all. Why? Probably mostly because he had never _seen_ Faith before. He knew there was a new Slayer, yes, but all he really knew about Faith at that point was a) a woman came in claiming to be a Watcher and whacked him, b) this girl came running in _after_ the false Watcher. However, in LTM, there was a deal (not a big deal, but a deal nonetheless) made over the fact that Angel drinks coffee. Buffy ran in to him at the counter when she brought Ford to meet the gang at the Bronze, and IIRC, she said, "Oh! You drink things. Like, non-blood things." or something to that effect, and we also saw a banquet laid out at Drucilla's birthday party that had non-blood things to eat and vamps were hanging out and munching on the assorted treats, so I think we can say that they can and will eat for the fun of it, if not for the nutritional value. Faith enjoys fighting a whole lot more than Buffy does, but she's so busy enjoying herself that she doesn't fight smart. A part of Buffy's brain always seems to be scanning her surroundings for things she can use to her advantage. Spike even remarked on this. So while Faith was just trying to see how hard she could hit him, Buffy saw the blade, said 'ah, here's something I can use' and whap. Referring to this bit of conversation, I have a question: In the scene where Xander and Faith discover Giles in the library, Xander (I thought) established to his own satisfaction that Angel wasn't the one who attacked Giles. If that's the case, then what's with "Your boyfriend is not as cured as you thought?" That line has boggled my mind ever since Tuesday night. I was POSITIVE Faith was going to die in this one. In the trailer, we all saw the scene where Faith is about to stake Angel. But I expected Angel to get up and break her neck...I've heard she's not going to be a long-term character, and I thought that this might just be the episode where they write her out of the show. Don't get me wrong, I like Faith...I just saw what I saw and came to my own conclusions. Oh" Subject: BUFFY: Possible spoilers about future episodes Spoiler space included: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * That should be enough. Ryan posted a message with possible spoilers about future eps. In particular, he speculated (or mentioned someone else's prediction) that Cordelia would become a vampire. This prediction caught my interest, because my cousin (not on the list) and I arrived at the same prediction independently the other day. My cousin's take is pretty much in line with Ryan's: Cordy gets vamped (but neither of us thought that Spike would be the one responsible)...I'll get into my speculation in a minute. Willow restores Cordy's soul, and Cordy and Angel go off to LA to enjoy eternal bliss together. My prediction is somewhat less optimistic. First, I speculated that Cordy got vamped not by Spike, but by Willow or Xander. It's been predicted that when Cordy wishes that Buffy never showed up, Willow and Xander become vampires. I thought that, if this is the case, perhaps all of Sunnydale would've been vamped or killed outright (I even speculated as to how this could be worked into a crossover series finale between almost every show on the WB, but that's a different story)...including Cordy. Now, I've heard that at the end of "The Wish," everything goes back to normal. But I thought that perhaps because Cordy was the one who wished Buffy out of existence (at least from Sunnydale), she might be "stuck" with whatever happened to her, in a Buffy version of "be careful what you wish for." So now we have Cordy turned into a vampire, and probably blaming her fate on Buffy (who is back in Sunnydale at the end of the episode). For revenge, she decides to steal Angel away from Buffy. Somehow (and I'm not sure how this happens), she and Angel have sex, activating Angel's curse again. So instead of Willow restoring Cordy's soul, we have Cordy causing Angel to lose his soul again. Now both Cordy and Angel are evil (a new Spike and Dru?), and both go to L.A. bent on mayhem. I don't REALLY think this would happen -- it would never get by the powers that be at the WB, the concept of a series where the main characters are vicious villains. Would be interesting if that's how the cookie crumbles, though. Not that people can't justify well enough for themselves. People just _don't want to know_. Not in the real world, and not in Buffiverse. Give them a few plausible reasons for things, and they'll fall all over themselves to believe that the world is what they need it to be. > Or they felt the unconventional Slayer required the oh-so-supreme > unconventionalness that is Giles. What exactly _is_ the conventional Slayer, however? Most fanfic Slayers tend to run in the Buffy vein, but so far we've seen three, and all _very_ different. Consider: Buffy. The 'I don't wanna' girl. Probably not that uncommon a syndrome, in the young-and-doomed. The most unusual thing about Buffy, really, is that she kept fighting, rather than letting the angst overpower her and drag her down. In past times, would most likely have been killed due to being majorly forced into her duties. Kendra. The 'sacred duty' chick. Big points for training, but minuses for having any common sense or world experiance. Probably the most common of types, and the shortest lived. These are the sorts that _never_ ask for help, because it is _their_ duty -- never see past the Prophecies. Faith. 'It's my party and I'll slay if I want to.' Can you really say that she was raised to her duty? She was probably a late or unexpected find, like Buffy, but rather than rejecting her duty, embraced it. Of the three types, provided you can keep her stable, she's probably the superior. She neither denies her duty nor embraces it to the point of excluding all else. Her biggest flaw is her focus; the fact that, like Kendra, she's starting to define her life only in terms of death. How can we call anything 'typical'? > Point taken from the people who have mentioned that Angel had never met Also, keep in mind -- you're being robbed. You've already been attacked. Someone else _with a weapon_ charges in. Do you assume that they're present for the good, and get whacked, or do you kill first and question later? > Faith before. I do assume that -- at least for the sake of his own safety > -- Buffy had explained to Angel that there was another Slayer around. I Also, remember, he knew that Kendra had died. He probably would have guessed. And she couldn't have spent nearly as much time with him if there hadn't been someone to cover her patrols. > would have liked to have seen that scene if only to observe how Buffy would > describe Faith to someone.
