(Was so many other things I don't want to think about it) I'm sending this to the newsgoup because I think that this is relevant to some ongoing discussions over there as well. Chewie615@aol.com wrote: > If Xander and Buffy were to get together, > it would be awkward and I don't believe they'd have much in common. You and I sharply disagree in this area. I think that Xander and Buffy have a lot in common: 1) They both come from broken homes. Every Christmas Xander sleeps outside to get away from his family's screaming and yelling. Buffy knows all about yelling and screaming families. It's been implied that her parents fights were constant and horrible. There was probably a rift in Buffy and Joyce's relationship long before she slayer. 2) They both feel things deeply and powerfully. Buffy is not one to show or tell her emotions to anyone. The exact depth of her pain is unknown to anyone, not even the audience because she hides it with jokes and barbs. Rarely do we her confide in anyone except under duress, even Angel. I sometimes feel that she spent more time comforting him than he did her. Xander is the same way. He jokes and he plays, often hiding his own feelings so he can help his friends. Buffy is exactly the same way. 3) They have both paid high prices during there tenure on the Hellmouth. Jesse was the first casualty. Xander keeps fighting because the Hellmouth took his life long friend away. If he stops, the people who could die might be someone else's' life long friend. Theresa, Ford, Ms Calendar, numerous children , and other innocents have died during Buffy's tenure on the Hellmouth. Buffy's first watcher died in LA. When her parents fought and accused her of being a trouble maker, Merrick was there for her. She fights, even though she desperately wants a normal life, because she can't shake Merrick's teachings. 4) They both know what's really going on. Sure, there are others who know, but it's not as personal as it is with Buffy and Xander. While everyone else walks around wondering why the powers that be have selected them for suffering, Buffy and Xander are well aware how things work. Angel is aware too, but not in the same way. His suffering is a result of his own actions and a curse, not as a direct result of the Hellmouth. Has anyone eels noticed the sheer power at Angel's disposal? It has been shown in previous episodes (Angel, Lie to Me, Innocence, Becoming 1 & 2) That Angel is more powerful than other vampires. Now that The Master, Luke, and Darla are gone, it's quite likely that Angel is one of the most powerful vampires out there. In addition to that Angel has an iron will. It is mostly by will power that keeps the demon from taking over completely. It is also by will that he survived centuries of torment in the demon dimension. Add all his natural strength to the simple fact that evil has more raw power at it's disposal (in the Buffyverse any ways) than good dose, and you have a problem of nuclear capacity. The only thing that keeps Angel's demon at bay is Angel's willingness to suffer *eternaly* for crimes technically he didn't commit. People don't seem to understand the true nature of his curse. It doesn't simply mean that he can't make love to Buffy, it doesn't simply mean that he can't be around her, it doesn't simply mean that he can't love her, it means that he can't enjoy *anything*. Nothing. He can't forgive himself for the demon's actions. He can't find joy or comfort in another's arms. Angel can't even enjoy an ice-cream cone. Never can Angel smell the fresh air of spring, or take a deep breath at the end of long day and be glad it's over. Because he can't breath, blood, real life-giving blood, doesn't flow through his veins, his arteries, anywhere. Angel is dead. Not only his he dead, but he is cursed. Any lessons he has learned about the sanctity of life, about how to be happy and love people, can never be used. Because the minute, the second, the moment he does, he risks losing his soul to the world beyond ours and a ruthless, viscous demon takes command of body so powerful, it has literally opened up a portal to hell. Angel should rest in peace. He has suffered torment beyond my level to comprehend, and, I suspect, everyone else's on this list. Xander didn't know how right he was when said that restoring Angel's soul was selfish. I would never, ever doom someone I love to the existence that is has been Angel's. If I truly loved someone, I would let them rest forever in peace. Y'all are probably sick of this topic by now, and to honest I'm out of ammunition for the subject. So I'll just lurk around and read what ever responses come. What interests me is why Joss would want to be so adamant about this. Nothing we have seen so far would require this knowledge that it was Dru, not Angel, who made Spike and as it's been mentioned, it in fact requires some rationalization due to the events in School Hard. The only thing I can figure is that Joss has some ideas floating around in his head about the circumstances involving the way in which Spike came to be a vampire. And the ideas that he has all work better for him if Dru made Spike. I presume that at some point, in flashbacks, we're going to get to see this. Maybe it will be in Buffy and maybe it will be in the Angel series. There's definitely some room for backstory here with these three since there's almost four decades between the making of Drusilla and the restoration of Angel's soul. Did the mortal Drusilla know the mortal Spike, or whatever his real name was, and once vamped did Dru decide to bring Spike along for the ride? Or did the vamp Dru fall for a mortal Spike and thus vamp him to keep their love eternal? Or did the vamp Dru make Spike for no particular reason and then fall for the demon-enhanced version of him? That or my personal guess is that a switch ala 'Freaky Friday' will take place between Angel and Xander, and it will be Angel in Xander's body with Buffy. That leaves Buffy and Xander without a significant other. It also leaves both of them hurt &/or depressed &/or vulnerable....
