In the scene between Willow and Spike (just after he breaks the bottle and has pulled her head back to threaten her), there are two different camera angles: one from Willow's side- showing her left cheek, slightly below, and one from Spike's side showing his right cheek and her face pretty much straight on, but slightly from the right. When the angle is from Willow's left, she had several strands of hair across her face (remember her hands are down- no using them), when the angle turns to Spike's right cheek, no hair. It goes back and forth during the whole scene. Just another nitpick from a Buffy lover. Um.... first of all....[snip] What about all those shows with only black people on them >> First, I just want to say that the mails didn't say they were racist in the sense I think you are using. The shows do lean towards the white culture and white people, yes, but the connotations of "racism" are now different from its original meaning and can't be used to accurately describe them now. Unfortunately I don't remember who said it to give credit, but the point that Buffy reflects Joss Whedon's high school experience was dead-on. His high school was probably a lot like mine: mostly white kids, very little diversity. This is how it was for him. The show is a reflection of that. This is horribly off topic and the list-mommies are gonna have a field day but... watch "White Man's Burden" and that will give you a tiny (and I mean itty-bitty- it's just a movie) taste of what black people go through. Most white people (myself included) don't really understand it at all, especially since I grew up in a tiny town in NW Ohio. I had one black friend and that was weird there. I do want to scream every time someone blames racism or biggotry for something, but the sad fact is that it usually is to blame. About the TV shows, yeah there are predominantly black shows, but look at the ratio of black shows to white shows (yes, once again let's boil this down to the simplest formula possible). There is a gigantic gap. Jenny - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 17:57:16 EST From: fun-ee@juno.com (fun ee) Subject: BUFFY: One Word: Sex In my opinion, Hollywood's vision of race and the inter-mixing of race on tv series and film is pretty much slow in developing as far as being realistic. The fact that they have Black tv shows only seems to heighten the segregation of White and Black. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a White cast with an occasional Black character thrown in. There was a Hispanic character in Inca Mummy Girl. Yet, if we're talking California, you all know there are lots of Hispanic, Asian, Mid-east, Black as well as other minorities in junior and high schools. The trick of making an inter-racial cast work is not making an issue of their race. People should just be viewed as people, but storytelling often involves the use of stereotypes: Xander is a stereotypical male with raging hormones, Willow is a computer nerd, Buffy is something of a tough girl outcast, etc. With an all White cast the intro of an occasional minority character makes them stick out all the more and the audience tends to stereotype them as 'token' or whatever even though it might have been an honest attempt to use a character who just happened to be Black or Hispanic. On the other hand, to be honest, I think there would have been a risk of using a non-Caucasian in the role of say Cordelia or Willow or Xander, or even Cordelia. Why? Because, like it or not, inter-racial romance on tv is still something controversial. I mean, I remember seeing light romance between races on Saved By The Bell where a Black and Asian girl are going together, or on the Power Rangers maybe where the Asian girl goes out with the Black or maybe it was the White ranger. But as a rule romance between White and other races is still viewed as not the norm, risky and unacceptable, even though in reality there are many inter-racial couples dating and married. The possibility of a romance between a Black Cordelia and a White Xander would be too controversial and make too many waves (in the Southern states especially) . See what I'm getting at? It's about sex. Yes, S - E - X. It's ALWAYS about sex in puritanical America. Don't even look for other excuses like ratings, politics, social problems, etc., just save yourself some trouble and remember EVERYTHING in life is about sex. Freud agrees with me. I was watching a Biography of the Rat Pack (Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and some other guy I forget) and it was really shocking to see that when Frank Sinatra was in charge of assembling all of Hollywood for the big Democratic fund raiser in Washington DC after he had helped President Kennedy win the election, Sammy Davis Jr. was told not to come. When Sammy Davis married a white woman there was also no congratulations from the White House, even though Davis had been there helping Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack get Kennedy elected. Old ways die hard. Some of those old ways still include the sanctity and purity of the White female in a White America...but like I said, what it really boils down to is SEX between Whites and other races...like I said, it's about SEX! Aren't you glad I'm here? funee (: ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Here they are, in alphabetical order. The 10 best: 1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (WB): Bright, inventive and reliably entertaining, Buffy is a stylishly witty morality play in monster's clothing. Writer/creator Joss Whedon, who also did the big-screen Buffy, understands how to use TV's episodic format to deepen his stories and characters. Whistler and the First both work indirectly, persuading and tempting and so on rather than taking more direct action. And Giles has described the background of the Buffy universe in terms of demons ruling the Earth in the past, until they were thrown out. So, suppose that the ruling demons, including the First, were thrown out by demons like Whistler, who rebelled against the First and sided with the humans. It's a mirror image of the whole Satan/rebellion/fallen angels bit; the First is God and Whistler is Satan, in a sense, but here God's the bad guy, Satan's the hero, and Satan won and threw God into Hell. It also reverses the Garden of Eden bit; instead of an ancient paradise ruined by disobedience to authority, there's an ancient demon-ruled world freed by rebelling against authority. And it fits in with the teenager/high school metaphor aspect of BtVS; it's taking the side of the rebellious teenager against the strict parent. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 19:50:06 PST From: "Duremdes BShaw22" Subject: BUFFY: tues. night Tues. night was a Buffy night, they had the show on the WB, then pax channel had Touch by an Angel with Alyson as a guest, then Fox had King of the Hill with Sarah as a guest voice. So maybe, and I'm just guessing here, it's cos a motel isn't really a human's residence the way Buffy's house or Giles's apartment is. Maybe Joss and co. consider it more like a public place where anyone can come and go as long as they pay. Sort of like how when Buffy was sick last year and Angel could've just walked into her hospital room if he wanted. They had a little timeline of witch shows. One says: Winnie Goodwin Free Spirit <----Title Name Sept. 1989to January 1990 Corinne Bohrer used her broom to clean up after 3 kids, including Buffy's Alyson Hannigan. I mean do you guys have close female friends >you never have honestly thought about sexually? Yeah! :) My best guy friend is one of my absolutely closest friends and I adore him to death. However, we know that we'll never be together `that way.' We've actually had other people come up to us and ask us if we were dating and without even turning to each other to look we both went `ewwwww!' And it's not because we're still in the `cooties' stage either. *g* (I'm 17 and he's 18.) We're such good friends we have non need for a further relationship. I for one detest the phrase `just friends' because a true friendship can be so wonderful that there's no `just' about it. I dunno, part of this may lie in the fact that Josh and I *talk* to each other a lot more than Buffy & Xander do about our feelings and such. We've said `I love you' to each other--meaning, "I love you very much as a good friend and possibly a sibling except we don't fight as much." However, I *have* known a couple of guys as friends that I've also dated a bit. The way I see things is for me personally there are two types of guy friends: ones I absolutely could never date and ones that I'm happy being friends with but would think about dating someday. I don't know if Buffy has ever thought about it this way, but if she has I suppose it just depends on which of these two Buffy sees him as. Smurf saith:Joss has proven that he will keep me nailed to the >edge of my seat with great story lines, unsuspected plot twists, lots of >humor, and possibly a few tears along the way. Yes! This is a great way to be thinking, Smurf. I agree. Joss can go or not go down this road (or any other for that matter) and I think most of us can agree that it'll still be interesting. I guess that's why I didn't throw a hissy fit over the whole Xander/Willow thing. It was a plotline that intrigued and amused me, even though I didn't want it to happen. One of the things I didn't like about it is Cordy. Nice Guy Oz is trying again with Willow, but Cordelia can't or won't allow herself to forgive Xander, and this has essentially cut ties with *all* of her friends in the Scooby Gang. By now, that mostly means she has no friends. Oz and Willow have each other and Xander has his friends to comfort him, but Cordy has no one. Poor dear. And at heart, she truly is a nice person and a good friend. Ah well, maybe she'll hook up with Faith, and then everybody'll be happy! ;) Ooh, I'm not lurking...hope I can keep this up... - -Jaina, on Snow Day Numbah THREE! "I'm a moose. A blue one." Lather.
