I didn't bring it up but the message by someo= ne else brought me out of my lurking. I am not going to make this personal, so no one should get hurt. When I wrote in, I was not suggesting that Buffy or Dawson's were racist nor did I mean to suggest that their creators were racist nor did I mean = to imply that fans of those shows are racist for liking them. No. Not at all= . But we cannot deny that these shows are very "white." That doesn't make t= he shows racist but it does make them less than diverse. Stephanie brings up a good point: what about the all black shows? Well, that's dilemma isn't it? All white shows will be crititicized by many because this is how TV has always been: showing the stories of white people and for a long time completely ignoring the lives of black people or people of other backgrounds, races, ethnicities, whatever. All black shows don't fall under the same criticism because things have t= o get worse before they get better. So all black shows are still payback, still compensation for years of institutionalized racism. Stephanie makes= a good point about these shows but that's the reality and lots of critics o= f "white" television want integration not segregation, that we should have shows of diversity instead of shows about white people and shows about black people. It's a controversy and bringing it up does not make Stephanie racist either. She's obviously a very nice person facing a big scary topic. Like I wrote before, Joss and Kevin both grew up in all white schools or nearly so. I understand this. So did I. And one tenss to write from experience. This doesn't make them racist. AND as Stephanie pointed out t= o me privately, sunny southern California is very white and preppy. BUT movies like Clueless showed us a diverse cast and diverse student bod= y and this struck me as more realistic than Buffy. I love BUFFY, but I wouldn't mind the show being not so much about JUST white people. It's fun to see reruns even. BBC2 showed two episodes of Sliders last evening. The second one was Stoker, in which the members of the band Stoker are all vampires. Watching the beginning of it, I was sure I was watching a trailer of Buffy the vampire slayer: there was a room full of teenagers listening to the band, with the camera focussing on the heroine (not Beckett, the other woman); backstage the leader of the band was talking to a woman whom he was trying to get to join the band as a singer; although he had normal teeth and was trying to reassure her, you just *knew* he was seconds away from draining her blood. And unlike the vampires in Buffy, he didn't fart around trying to be cool or say cool things: IMO he bit her at exactly the right moment. It was only when the Sliders opening credits appeared that I knew what was going on. Please read. Effective January 23, 1999, the Xmission Buffy discussion list and the Xmission Buffy fiction list will stop operations. This was not an easy decision for us to make, but real life is becoming increasingly intrusive. One of us is writing her dissertation, one is rehabbing a house, all of us have jobs and personal lives-- and all of these things get in the way of running the kind of list we want to run. So, reluctantly, we're giving it up. There are numerous other great Buffy lists out there, as well as a very active newsgroup. We'd encourage people to post about these other lists so that no one becomes "Buffy list deprived" after this list stops functioning. :) You don't need to do anything if you want to stay onlist until the end-- the list will just go away, and you'll be automatically uns*bbed. Or, as always, you can uns*b any time before the 23rd. Needless to say, we will not be processing any new subscription requests as of this date. In terms of the list rules-- we'll continue to enforce the rules on flaming, spoilers and the four-line quote rule. ALSO: As of the 23rd, all archives will go away-- and this includes the fiction archives. If there's something you want, get it now. Thanks to all of you for making this a list that we were proud to run. I also had a group of friends get busted up because one woman tried to start dating one of the guys, yep me. Actually it ended up working really well for all of us, but that's another story. But "be honest," fun-ee implores, can we men think of a women friend only in a platonic sense? Well, I have to say, it depends on the woman. With most, no serious sexual thoughts ever go through my little gray computer. By serious, I mean not spurious thoughts that come and go, but those that I might be tempted to dwell upon for longer than a fleeting instant. But for others, it can be a struggle. And it really just comes down to self-control with those people. I try to be pretty strict with myself (a married man) to not let those kinds of fantasies develop and keep things G-rated between me and such women. I'm not talking about struggle and discipline to start a morality discussion. Rather I'm saying for me, I *can't* become very close friends with some women for this reason. Before you start to think I'm some kind of psycho, let me add two things. First, this has only happened to me a couple of times. Second, I don't mean I can't hang out with said females, just not become the closest of friends. So the answer for me is, sometimes. >Any guy like Xander who admitted that 'linoleum makes >me horny' would have noticed Willow as a pretty girl sometime between >junior high and high school at least, I would think. It is a little bit hard to fathom, isn't it. As much as I'd like to deny it, physical appearance does play a huge role in this question, at least for me. Though some people have strange tastes, about the only time Willow doesn't look stunning is *maybe* standing next to Cordelia. == Todd \\\\ The Browns are back!
