Benton =20 This story features Giles, Angel, Spike, Dru, Buffy and Noel Arceneaux. It is rated R for very mild violence, general blood-sucking and sexual innuendo. No spoilers. Song lyrics lifted from "Walk This Earth Alone" by Lauren Christy, Charlie Midnight and Patrick Doyle; available on the "Great Expectations" soundtrack. =20 There is a prequel to this story in the works, which will cover all the loose ends and nagging questions, including the Mokoi. (Read on!) This one takes place in alternate Buffy-universe, where Angel never reverted to Angelus, but other equally nasty things have happened. INNER DEMONS The night was clear. The stars shone in the sky and the waxing crecent moon grinned down like a cheshire cat. An eriee silence hung around the town of Sunnydale. A silence broken only by the faint sounds of flesh hitting flesh. In a dark ally, a lone girl was set upon two vampires. Their battle raged on for several minutes before she was able to overpower them. But no sooner had she finished off the first two when two more threw her into a wall. Recovering almost not quickly enough, she watched one move in for the kill. But it didn't matter. Stake in hand, she was ready for him. When suddenly, the vampire stopped and looked down at an arrow that was jutting from his chest. It was the last thing he saw before vanishing into dust. The girl and the remaining vampire stopped, startled by this oddity. Where had that come from? However, the moment's hesitation was all it took for a second arrow to find the creatures heart and reduce it to dust as well. Still puzzled, the girl followed the arrow's path back to a low wall. There, the figure of a pale man with long dark hair stood. He was dressed in black and held a longbow at his side. The two stared at each other in silence for a time. Until a noise caused the girl to look away for an instant. But, in that instant, he was gone ans she was left confused and alone in the ally way. "Thank you!" she finally called out, and left the battlefield. * * * * * Alone in the night he walked. The lone predator moving through the urban jungle. But he wasn't hunting this night. Well... not yet anyway. The night was still young. Tonight he was just out thinking. Something wasn't right. Their numbers were decreasing faster than normal. Not that they still didn't have enough among their ranks to do some real damage. But there was something weird about the recent decline. He could blame *her*, but even she couldn't slay as many as had been killed in the last few days. No. Someone was helping her. But who? Not the others. He wasn't underestimating them, he knew better, he just knew that they weren't involved in this. No this was someone else. "Damn," he swore. Who was helping her? Dru had said that someone was coming. That he walked in between darkness and light. But that was all she could... or would say. Whoever he was, he was staying out of sight. He continued on, walking and thinking. All would resolve itself. But now he was hungry. Now it was time to make her suffer more... * * * * * Please send your feedback to Blackfire42@hotmail.com The Black Fire ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Feb 1998 15:08:00 -0500 From: ingrid29@juno.com (Ingrid E Stanton) Subject: BUFFYFIC: DISCUSS: Calefacto's Chalice Great story! (17/?) by ingrid And now for the gratuitous, but entirely necessary DISCLAIMER: The characters of Buffy, Giles, Angel, Xander, Willow, Cordy, Spike and Dru, and anyone else I forgot to mention belong to Joss Whedon and the WB. SUMMARY: Takes place a day after the last part. This one's *very* fluffy with a lot of dialogue. If you don’t get this, that’s ‘cause you haven’t read the other parts. If you want to get this, ask me for them. Have fun… *** "One Vampire’s Headache…" Part the Seventeenth *** Buffy looked at the bare wall in front of her. She was being released today, and today, she would see Angel. Giles had come in earlier to tell her that he was awake. Her heart had jumped into her throat, and hadn’t gone back to its proper place. She was in a constant state of anticipation, and felt she might bust her way out of this place now if they didn’t hurry up. Willow stopped at the doorway and looked at Buffy’s bed. "It’s okay, Will. I’m not asleep." "Do you ever go to sleep, Buffy? ‘Cause every time I come in here you’re always-" "How’s Angel?" Buffy sat up eagerly. "Oh. Angel? He’s better. He can’t wait to see you." She paused. "Uh…Buffy?" "What?" "I kinda faked some stuff for Angel on the records." "Faked? As in…" "Hacked. Yeah. Angel’s now my step-brother." Buffy burst into a fit of giggles. "Will, he doesn’t look anything like you!" "Well, step siblings don’t have to look alike, and this way, he’ll have some family. Besides, only a relative was allowed to provide his information." Another nurse stepped into the room. "Buffy Sommers?" "That’s me," Buffy answered perkily. "Everything has gone through. You’re free to go. Just sign yourself out." Willow didn’t think she’d ever seen a bigger smile on her friend’s face. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Buffy bolted into the room, running smack into a doctor. They both backed up. "Oh my God! I’m so sorry!" The doctor looked slightly amused. "That’s okay. Just next time, try not to run in a hospital." "Sorry!" She repeated to his retreating back. As soon as he had disappeared, however, she took off for Angel’s bed. Behind the curtain. Number 302, she recalled. She pulled back the antisepticly white cloth to reveal Angel sitting up in bed reading a small book. She guessed it wasn’t about demons. He looked up when he saw her and smiled. "Buffy." Her heart constricted in her chest. He looked absolutely beautiful sitting against the crisp white sheets, light pouring from the window through the gauzy white curtains. She hurried to his bedside, settling on the edge of a chair and kissing him hard. "I missed you," she declared, burying her head in his chest and reassuring herself. "I missed you too," he responded quietly. He waited; stroked her hair. "Buffy?" "huh?" "What happened in the library- To Spike and Drusilla, I mean." She looked up into his eyes. "I staked them," she replied fiercely. "Oh my God- I didn’t even tell Giles." "I had a feeling you had. I couldn’t remember." "I’ll let him know as soon as I get out of here… Hey! When are you getting out, anyway?" He sighed. "Unfortunately, not for a while. I had to get stitches. Just don’t heal like I used to." Buffy cringed. "Stitches? Ow." "Yeah," he answered, "but it’s worth it." Her heart melted. She kissed him again gently. "Poor Angel." Their lips met again. He smiled. Buffy reached at the foot of Angel’s bed, grabbing the chart. "Angel Claire," she read. "Angel Claire?" "Willow said it was from a book she’d read. A love story." "Really," Buffy asked, intrigued, "And what happens?" >From the doorway, Willow answered. "Well, he breaks her heart, she marries another guy, goes insane and kills him and is executed." Buffy raised her eyebrows, "Will, why do you wound me?" "Did I mention he marries her cousin?" Buffy’s nose scrunched up. "eww!" She looked at Angel. "Promise to never marry my cousin?" He watched her with an amused expression. "As long as you promise not to marry another guy. Or kill anyone, for that matter." "Okay. Deal." She shook his hand and leaned towards him. "You need to get some rest," she whispered intimately, "I’ll see you later." "goodbye," he answered softly. "Sleep," she commanded on her way out. **** END, PART 17 Comments? Questions? Write to me at Ingrid29@juno.com. Summary so far: A mysterious guy has been killing vampires in Sunnydale. If you couldn't figure out who the other two characters were, why are you on this list? INNER DEMONS Part 2 "And you're sure you saw this guy." "Xander, vampires don't just turn to dust by themselves." "Spontainious combustion?" Xander shrank a bit under the glare his friend turned on him. "Hey. It could happen. Right?" "What could happen?" came a familiar voice from behind them. The two turned to see a man standing near the library doors. "Hey Giles," Xander said in greeting. "Buffy was just telling me about the strange happenings while on patrol last night." "What sort of strange things?" came the response, as Giles lead them into the library. "Strange," Giles finally said, after listening to Buffy retell her story. "Yes, very unusual." "Unusual?" Buffy echoed. "That's all you have to say?" "In an area where the unusual is... well... usual, what would you have me say?" "That you've maybe heard of this guy," Buffy countered. "Isn't there something in your books about a Robin Hood wannabe who goes around shooting vampires?" "I can look again, if you wish, however, I have heard nothing of a strange man running around with a longbow." There was a lull in the discussion. That is until Willow walked in the room. She surveyed the group with a puzzled look. "Okay, what's going on?" she started. "Something's up isn't it. Anything I can do?" "Not unless you've seen a strange guy running around Sunnydale lately, Will," came Buffy's answer. "Which strange man?" Willow asked. "There are so many strange men around here. You know with the hellmouth and everything." "This one, apparently carries a longbow," Giles explained, "Buffy say him shoot down two vampires last night." "Oh...," she breathed. "Well... that's a good thing..., at least." "Well that was the grossest thing I've ever seen," said Cordelia as she burst into the room. She looked at everyone, "Well?" "Well what?" asked Giles. "Aren't you going to ask me what happened?" "Sorry, Cor," Xander replied, "we were talking about strange people. We were just about to get to you." "Well, anyway," Cordy continued as she glared at Xander, "my neighbor found this big, dead cat on her fron lawn." "Aawww! Poor thing!" Willow exclaimed. "It was probably hit by a car last night." "I don't think a car could have ripped the thing's head off." Cordy replied. "Eww." "Could there be another cult in town, Giles?" Buffy asked. "It's possible," Giles started. "Willow, the animal shelter would have picked up the body by now." "I'll go check their files," Willow answered as she headed for her computer. "I found it," she called, after a few minutes of searching. "One dead, male cougar found," she read, "head torn from body. Cause of death, excessive blood loss." "That would mean vampires or cults, right?" Xander asked. "Those would be my first choices as well," Giles confirmed. "However, we shouldn't rule out any possibilities." "Uh oh," Willow interupted. "It says that they've found several other animals in the last few days. All killed the same way." "Looks like I have extra work to do tonight," Buffy groaned as she looked at the library clock. "We should get to class." With that the four kids vacated the library, leaving Giles his research. * * * * * "So you're mom's out of town again?" Willow asked as they left class later that day. "Yeah," Buffy said, "some big art show up north." "Doesn't it feel kinda weird to have your mom gone all the time." "Not really..." Buffy said, "Well... yeah, kinda. I don't know. With the... current situation, I sort of prefer her to be away from here. It's one less person to worry about." "Well, there is that," Willow agreed. They walked out into the court yard and just stood there for a while. "Hey, Oz's band is playing at the Bronze tonight," Willow suggested, "wanna join me." "Can't," Buffy sighed, "I have extra work tonight, remember?" "Oh... well..." Willow searched for an alternative, "you could show up for a little while." "No, I should really do some patroling tonight," she grumbled. "Maybe next time." "Alright," as Willow finally gave in, "I'll see you tomorrow then." "Ok. Be careful out there," the slayer cautioned. "You too." * * * * * On the hunt that night, Buffy silently patrolled the ally ways in the residential area. She had carefully made her way over to the park when she heard a noise from above her. She climbed to the rooftops and resumed her search. The slayer made a pass around the buildings. When she finally stopped, she noticed the merry-go-round down below. She remembered how she had once watched Angel and Drusilla talking and her heart seized. She shook her head to clear it of thoughts of her lost love and started back to the ladder. She had just reached a large air conditioner housing when she felt, rather than heard something behind her. But in the time it took her to spin around and reach for her stake, the whistle of an arrow could be heard, and Buffy turned just in time to see her assailant crumble to dust. “Okay,” Buffy breathed, “whoever you are, thanks for the help. Now show yourself.” It came quickly and quietly. An arm encircled her waist while a gloved hand clamped down on her mouth. In an instant, she was pulled back against the mystery person and was being manuvered back to the housing. She struggled to free herself, but her captor’s grip was too strong for her to break. “Shhh!” a soft, accented male voice whispered in her ear. “It’s alright. I’m not going to hurt you.” “Buffy ceased her struggles and he released her. She turned to face the visage of her rescuer from the night before. He was a head taller than she. His dark brown hair fell just below his shoulders. His face held a gentle severity and he looked at her through kind yet haunted blue green eyes. As before, he was dressed all in black from the soft leather boots he wore to the leather hat that covered his head. Over his shoulder, Buffy could see a bow and quiver of arrows strapped to his back. “Who are...” she wasn’t allowed to finish. He held up a hand to silence her and listened to the night. Deftly he manuvered her around behind him. The stranger then reached for his bow, and arrow, rolled around the corner and fired. Satisfied that the shot had found it’s target, he returned to his previous position and rearmed himself. After listening again for a moment, he repeated the move on the other side of the housing. “No witnesses,” he said quietly. “Not yet anyway.” Again he listened. When he was sure that the area had been cleared, he took the slayer by the hand and dead her to the edge of the roof. “Okay,” Buffy said when they were both on the ground, “now who are you?” “No one important,” he said. He suddenly turned his face to the wall. “Get out of here,” he growled. “What’s wrong?” “Go please. I don’t want to hurt you!” he pleaded. “I don’t know how long I can hold back!” “Let me help you.” “No one can help me,” he said mournfully. Suddenly, there was a movement near by. They both turned turned at it and, in the dim moonlight, Buffy saw that the man’s face had changed. The face of a hungry vampire now stared back at her. She almost jumped. But then she remembered the stake in her sleave. She got it out, prepared to fight as the vampire made a move towards her. When, suddenly, he went in the direction of the sound. In a flash, he had his hands on a large stray cat and was feeding from it. He flung the meal away and leaned against the wall. “Please go,” he begged, “that won’t be enough.” Buffy took one last look at him and took off, dropping the stake as she left. The fiend grabbed it from the ground and turned it on himself. He tried to plunged it into his own heart but couldn’t. He finally found himself flinging the weapon away with a defeated cry as he sank to the ground sobbing. * * * * * The Black Fire Blackfire42@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Feb 1998 18:43:36 -0500 (EST) From: kvweller@Charleston.Net Subject: Re: BUFFYFIC: Beta reader needed You will be happy to know that my kids and I have already done a Buffy/X Files skit with Christmas cookies. The show must go on… *** "One Vampire’s Headache…" (18/18) *** Angel strolled down the street, acutely aware of the life and light around him. The sun beat down on his back, and gave him a warm, familiar feeling. It was funny. Sometimes, he’d notice a strange bird’s song, or the way the sunlight reflected off a car. Buffy would laugh, never noticing any of these things. She’d never known any other kind of life, he thought, and smiled. Better for her, but for him, it only increased the joy that life brought him now. And the fact that that life would someday end made each moment still more precious and wonderful. Angel Claire. He was getting used to this life. No one seemed to question him here- where he came from, his family (even though Willow and Buffy had concocted a story). With Giles’ help, it hadn’t been difficult procuring a job at the museum. His historical knowledge was unparalleled. Buffy liked to joke that he was becoming just like Giles. Truthfully, there seemed worse fates. After he’d woken up after the transformation, questions had plagued him. Why? He didn’t deserve this- after all he’d done. He’d often wake up wondering if the whole thing wasn’t some idle daydream, but then he’d see the sun shining cryptically down on him and thoughts would become muddled. The questions grew fewer and fewer as he settled into his new life, and a faint hope began to build in him. He felt a pair of gentle arms slide around his waist from the back, and turned to look at her. Buffy’s smile lit up her whole face. "Hey," she purred, reaching up to touch his face. She kissed him gently, absorbing the light and the heat of the day along with the touch of his lips. She pulled back and her brow crinkled. "Watcha doing?" "Thinking," he replied simply. She put her hands on her hips. "About what?" "Stuff." He smiled at her attitude. "Listen. You’re not allowed to be cryptic boy anymore. I thought we went over this already. Remember? The rules to being mortal? Nothing more mysterious than your run of the mill secret affairs." She raised her eyebrows anxiously. "You’re not having an affair, are you?" "No, Buffy. I was thinking about vampires." "Oh." She became very serious. "You don’t- Angel, you don’t regret it, do you?" He was adamant in an instant. "No! Of course not, Buffy. I wouldn’t trade *this* for anything in the world." She breathed out in sheer relief, and took his hand. "Then what?" "It’s just… Well, I feel like I don’t deserve-" "Angel," she interrupted him, "we’ve been through this." "I just can’t get over it that quickly." "I know you can’t get over what the demon did in your body, but that’s exactly what it was- the demon. It wasn’t you. I know *you’d* never hurt anyone like that." He brushed some blond hair from her face. "Thank you," he whispered solemnly "Hey," she answered, kissing his cheek, "anytime." ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Little was visible in the dark warehouse, save a lone candle that was inching its way to the center of the room. Closer inspection would reveal a dark vampire, listlessly drifting across the charred floor. She sat where a broken table lay, and on it an old book. The pages crinkled slowly as she read in an otherwise dead room. Her eyes brightened as she lit upon an interesting passage. "Resurrection of the undead," she read to herself, and laughed. "Exactly what I needed for you, Spike, love. Katherine is so much prettier than Drusilla, don’t you think? You *will,* anyway." *** FIN! Wow! Aren’t you proud of me? From Buffy=92s expression it was pretty obvious that Giles wasn=92t happy. "Well, he went all watcher on me. Chosen one, sacred duty. The whole spie= l. He threatened to stop me." "What=92d you do? Are you going to not go?" "Full speed ahead on the plan. I told him that there wasn=92t a lot he co= uld do to stop me and that my mom wouldn=92t believe him so there was no wher= e he could turn. You=92ve just got to promise me that you won=92t tell him any= thing until it=92s too late to stop me." "Buffy, I don=92t think Armageddon could stop you. Maybe slow you down bu= t definitely not stop you." Willow waited outside while Buffy lied to her mother. They only had about eight hours before sunrise and everything had to be ready by then. Buffy waved to her mother one last time before shutting the front door. Willow = was impressed with the ease Buffy could lie to her mother, but then again Wil= low was impressed with the ease Buffy did just about everything. "Is you=92re mom mad?" "Why should she be mad, Will? For all she knows I=92m spending the weeken= d with your family in LA." "What are you going to do if she finds out you didn=92t go to LA. with my parents?" "As long as she doesn=92t find out by sunrise tomorrow, it really won=92t matter." "We=92ll go back to my house. My parents already left so there will be no= one there. We can go over the plan one more time and make sure that you=92re = ready for sunrise." As Buffy and Willow walked towards Willow=92s house, Buffy felt someone watching them. At the corner before Willow=92s street, a pair of vampires jumped from the bushes. Buffy had already known they were there and was anticipating the attack. Before the first one had a chance to attack, She reduced him to a pile of dust. The second vampire took his opportunity to grab Willow. "Wouldn=92t this have been so much more fair one on one? Why=92d ya=92 ha= ve to bring my friend into it?" Buffy hit the vampire so hard he released Willo= w and turned his full attention towards her. "I understand, you=92re more t= he silent type? Was you=92re friend the talkative one? I never did get the c= hance to have a conversation with him." The vampire charged at Buffy but she avoided the charge by jumping into a tree. "Surprise. Your attacks would = be so much more successful if you employed the element of surprise. I=92m so= rry, this really has been fun but I have big plans in the morning and I do hav= e things that have to be done first. Please accept this with my apology." Jumping from the tree, Buffy turned the remaining vampire to dust with a broken tree branch. "You okay, Will?" "Of Course. Are you sure you=92re ready for this plan? It could be danger= ous. Maybe Giles is right, this isn=92t a good idea." "Will, Where=92d the cold feet come from? I can do this. You=92re forgett= ing it=92 s Angel we=92re talking about." Willow opened her front door and let Buffy enter. "Buffy, you=92re not be= ing a hundred percent truthful with yourself. It=92s not actually Angel you=92l= l be facing at sunrise. When you confront him, he=92ll very much be Angelus, a= nd Angelus isn=92t Angel. This could be very bad. " "Listen, if this doesn=92t work Angelus will kill me. If I don=92t at lea= st try, Angelus will kill me anyway. In the big picture what does it matter if I = die tomorrow or in two weeks, I=92ll still be just as dead. At least this way= , there=92s a chance I=92ll be successful and by sunset tomorrow, Angel wil= l be back and Angelus will be gone for good." "I hope you=92re right." "Of course I=92m right, I=92m the slayer." - - ------------------------------ End of Buffyfic-digest V2 #28 ***************************** To subscribe to buffyfic or buffyfic-digest, send the command subscribe buffyfic-digest or subscribe buffyfic to majordomo@xmission.com.
