I mean, sure, everyone has said to themselves, "What would I do if so-and-so were to die? That would just kill me!" But none of those people really know how it feels. They don't understand what it means to lose your best friend. The person you grew up with. The one who was there for you when everybody else had something better to do. The person who was friend, and family, and sole confidante - when no one else wanted to be. None of those people knew what it was like to have a Willow, or to lose one. And to think that she wanted more. All those years, and he knew nothing about it. So she was in love with him! She was everything in his world, and she wanted to be the only thing she wasn't. He was glad that she hadn't told him. Perhaps he would have been better off never finding out. But at least this way, he didn't have to cause her any pain. The person who given everything for him, how could he tell her that he didn't share her feelings? He never could have, to her face. Not to his Willow. But he couldn't have been untrue to her either. So what could I have done, Xander thought ruefully. Run away? Well, I guess I don't have to. She did that for me. And now I have nothing. When she left, she took away everything that mattered to me, everything that was good, and right with the world. Xander and Willow, that is what's right. That's the only think in the world that I could count on. Just Xander doesn't have the same ring to it. Lonely Xander. I guess I'll have to get used to it though, because I'm going to be lonely Xander for a while. Unless . . . but no, that probably still hadn't changed. Even if Willow had left, he knew that one constant remained in his life, the fact that Buffy didn't love him. Not the way that he loved her, at least. Maybe Willow and I had everything in common after all, he thought, unrequited love seems to be a characteristic of our friendships. (Oh god, it must have killed her to hear me talking about Buffy all the time. If only I had known, I would have spared her that pain.) But maybe . . . maybe with Angel gone, Buffy could look at him in a different way. Maybe she would see in him something that she hadn't seen before. Maybe she would notice all the wonderful aspects of Xanderness that she hadn't seen in the year that he'd known her. After all, he reasoned, Angel has been in the scene since the beginning of our friendship. No one could have competed with tall, dark, dead boy with his angst and dark clothing. Buffy had to pull the Romeo and Juliet bit, it was practically a law. But Romeo and Juliet died, and Buffy is still alive. And maybe she can move on. Maybe somehow she can see through the pain of her loss to the guy that is still around, the guy that has been in love with her since the moment he laid eyes on her. Maybe she can move on to me. It seems so natural. We're all that we have left. She's all that I have, and all that I want. If she could only see me, really see me, and really understand how perfect we could be together. If she could only fall in love with me, because the Lord knows I've fallen in love with her. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 11:21:28 PDT From: "Black Fire" Subject: BUFFYFIC:Till Night Passes By (1/1) TITLE: Till Night Passes By AUTHOR: Black Fire EMAIL: blackfire42@hotmail.com FEEDBACK: If you wish. DISCLAIMER: The characters portrayed in this story belong to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, Sand Dollar, etc... I make no claim to them what-so-ever, nor do I make any claim to the lines from "Jekyll & Hyde." SPOILERS: Up to Killed By Death. SUMMARY: This story takes place several months to at least a year after the events of the last few episodes. Angel has gotten his soul back durring this time. WARNING: I was really, really depressed when I wrote this. Till Night Passes By The room Angel walked into was a solemn one. They had been gathered around the hospital bed for a week now... waiting... They didn't notice him at first. He just stood there in the doorway watching them watch her. It was Willow who finally turned her attention to the door. Her smile was forced and the tears in her eyes were fresh. But, in spite of that, she slowly walked towards the newcomer. The look on her face told him all he needed to know - he was too late. "She woke up... a couple of times," Willow managed to choke up. "The first time, she was dilirious. I think she was reliving what happened. The second time..." she almost couldn't say it, "she wanted to go after Spike for what he did to her. Both time... she called out for you as she slipped back into the coma." A red-tinged tear slid down Angel's cheek. By this time, all eyes were focused on him, and a heavy silence had fallen around the room once more. Giles, this time, broke the silence. "The doctors say she won't make it. She's been slipping away for the last hour or so." He stopped to wipe his eyes. "I think that she was waiting for you." Angel only nodded as he moved towards the bed. He didn't take his eyes off her for a moment, not even to watch the others vacate the room. He just sat down in a chair next to her, took one of her hands in both of his and waited. After a few minutes, she stired. Weakly she opened her eyes and looked at him. "Angel?" she whispered, as if not believing he was really there. "I'm here, Buffy," he answered. "Spike?" "He'll never hurt anyone ever again," he said. His features hardened into a mask of anger. "I made him pay for what he did to you." "It was my fault," she whispered. "No it wasn't." "Yes," she said, "I should have taken him out before I went for Drusilla." "You couldn't have known what he would do." "I should have," was the reply, "If it had been you instead of her, I would have done the same." Buffy closed her eyes and let out a breath. She stayed that way for a while. "Buffy?" Angel asked, getting worried. "I'm still here," she answered, keeping her eyes closed. "I'm sorry I left," Angel apologized. "I know why you did," Buffy replied. "I understood that you had to be along for a while after all that happened. I just didn't think that it would be this long. But I'm glad your here now." "Me too," Angel forced a smile. "Buffy shivered and looked at him. "Hold me," she finally asked, weakly. Angel moved over to the tiny hospital bed and gathered her in his arms. He spent the rest of the night laying in bed with her, just holding her. * * * * * At about 8:00 the next morning, the rest of them filed back into the room. Buffy was laying on the sunlit bed with a peaceful look on her face; the first she had worn all that terrible week. The group began to hope that the worst had passed, that the doctors had been wrong... That was when they noticed the thin layer of ash that covered her. Willow reached over to feel for a pulse, but all she found was a cold hand with something resting in it: it was Angel's Claddagh Ring with a slip of paper rolled up inside it. She slipped the ring off the paper and read what it said: ...I'll keep you near me till night passes by... ...And I'll never desert you. I promise you this till the day that I die. Ok. That's all of it. Please send me any comments, suggestions, flames you may have.
