That was supposed to be number three, and "Enough" is the real number four. It takes place ten years into the future, but I’m not telling you what’s happened in advance. I’m going to reveal that as time goes on in the story. If you want to get this, ask me for them! ********* "Reunion," by Ingrid Part Thirteen: "Translations" ********* "‘An old enemy returns’ is the first line here, see?" Cordelia was pointing at the small text and Buffy was squinting to read it. "Right. Now what’s this?" "Okay, now this is what we can’t figure out. This part says ‘slayer’ and this part says ‘time.’ We figure that it has something to do with the slayers throughout time and it’s a measurement of the difficulty this disaster will present." "No." They both looked over to the couch, where Angel was hunched over the big book. "It’s one slayer. Look at the article before it. It’s definite. I think it means the previous," he corrected. "Previous? Wait. That would explain why Buffy’s having the dreams too. These are ‘now,’ and this is ‘previous,’ and… hmm…" "Cordelia. Tell me that’s a ‘the new slayer and the old slayer have a party and the whole gang’s invited’ kind of ‘hmm.’" "Well it is if you consider a bunch of vampires warping time a party," Angel announced. "Huh?" "As far as I understand, that’s what it means by ‘set things right’ in this context. That would also explain why you’re involved. It must have been a vampire you’ve faced that’s responsible for this. But who? I can’t think of anyone left alive that has both enough power and enough motivation to-" "Spike." "Spike?" "I saw him in my dream." "Me too, and so did Corin, or at least I think she did." "He wants to bring her back," Angel affirmed. "Drusilla," Cordelia added. "Damn." "What does it say about the outcome?" "That’s another problem. It’s something about a death." "A death will restore time. Whose death?" "That’s the end. There isn’t anything else that indicates…" "What about this?" "A friend emerges from the shadows." "Well I’m a friend," Buffy continued, "but I don’t think I’ve ‘emerged from the shadows.’ Unless you consider L.A. a shadow." Her attempt at humor fell flat. She perked up immediately. "Hey, maybe it’s Angel?" "Hmm… Maybe." "I think we should worry about Spike first. A friend can only help us, right?" Someone knocked perfunctorily at the door. Giles. *** END, PART 13. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. The author claims no rights to these characters. SUMMARY: I’ve decided to help explain the past through a series of interludes that will be interspersed throughout the story as it goes on. This series is obviously meant as a companion to the aforementioned "Reunion." These flashbacks take place about 9 years before "Reunion," give or take a few months. Needless to say, if you haven’t read "Reunion," this won’t make much sense to you. If you don’t have parts 1-12 of it, you can write to me and request them. My address is Ingrid29@juno.com. Oh! BTW, I love to get feedback, except when my mailbox explodes, which is often, but send it anyway! "Reunion" Interlude # 4: "Enough" by Ingrid "Come on- You should go to bed. I don’t know where your parents, are, but-" "Oh God. My parents. They don’t know yet. What will I tell them?" He looked around. "What day is it?" "It’s Friday." She looked at her watch, rubbing at her eyes. "Well, technically Saturday," she answered, her voice still shaky. "They’re gone. For the weekend. Some business thing…" He trailed off and looked at her. She grew uneasy. Maybe he didn’t want her here after all. It was too private, too personal. For all the groping they’d done, they didn’t know all that much about each other at all. "Xander?" "You look terrible," he observed, his own voice a tenuous mess. He reached out and touched her face, wiping at the running make-up there. She smiled and tried to fill her lungs with air. Her eyes were still burning. "I know," she breathed, "so do you." And laughed from behind the tears. The silence blended comfortably with the rain on the window. "And you’re shaking," he continued, and pulled her into a comforting hug. "So are you," she grinned, relaxing in his arms, comfortable even though she was sitting on a kitchen floor, in wet clothes, curled up to her equally wet boyfriend. Slowly, he pulled them both up to their feet. "Come on," he prodded, and they made their way up the carpeted stairs leaning on each other. "Where are we going," she asked quietly. "To get cleaned up," he explained, and led her into the bathroom. *** Tenderly, with as steady a hand as he could manage, he dabbed at the black lines running down her cheeks. She closed her eyes at the touch, completely unfamiliar to such gentleness; even unaware that such a thing existed. "Xander," she whispered. He shushed her with his lips, letting the washcloth slip from his hands to fall where it might. The kiss was so soft- little more than a breath on her mouth. She had to bite her lip to stop from whimpering. "Xander," she pleaded. He pulled away reluctantly, leaving her lips warm and tingling. "That’s right," he breathed. "I’m sorry. I forgot what we were supposed to be doing. Wait right here." She sat in the bathroom alone, reeling from the last few moments here. Him. He returned shortly with some clothes in his hands. Boxers and a large navy T-shirt. "Here. Change into these." He smiled at her before closing the door. "I’m gonna get changed in my room. Be back in a second," she heard from down the hall. She peeled the wet designer fabric from her body and toweled herself off. Her long hair was slowly but surely drying. The clothes he’d given her were warm. Comfortable. She knew they must have been his. What was she doing here, anyway? She was supposed to be home- What the hell was she worried about? It didn’t matter. It wasn’t like they would miss her anyway. But she would miss him, if she left. Maybe he would even- He knocked at the door. "Come in," she mumbled. He opened it and she followed him down the hall. She didn’t notice much about the bedroom. It was enough that she was there, in the place where he lived, slept, and dreamed. It was enough that he’d chosen to let her into his personal space and stay for a while. Wordlessly, she crept under the sheets with him and curled up against him. And for once, it was enough. *** END, Interlude # 4 _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
