SUMMARY: Cordelia's reaction to Willow/Xander RATING: PG SPOILERS: Through Band Candy FEEDBACK: Feedback is to me as chocolate is to Xander DISCLAIMER: Cordelia, Xander, and the rest of the Buffy crew belongs to Joss Whedon & Co. No copyright infringement intended. This is just a 10-minute-Danielle-avoiding-her-term-paper fic. Enjoy! :) I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LET YOU GO "I have the sense to recognize I don't know how to let you go" "Do What You Have To Do", Sarah McLachlan Cordelia slammed the book shut with a resounding thud. "Big fat nothing here," she noted to the startled Watcher. She stood up with a sigh, heading towards the stacks to return this book and replenish her supply of dusty volumes of obscure demons. "I can't believe I'm giving up my Saturday night to research yet another demon. Hasn't Giles got them all memorized by ---" Cordelia let her complaint trail off, stunned by the sight that met her eyes. She swallowed hard, resisting the urge to cry out. She felt like she'd had a stake from Buffy's crossbow driven into her heart, the pain was that sudden and intense. Xander. Her Xander. And Willow. Kissing. Cordelia retreated a few steps into the shadows of the bookcases. Safely hidden from sight, Cordelia watched her boyfriend with a growing feeling of disappointment welling up in her stomach. She couldn't take it anymore. She turned away. It all made sense now. The strange looks Xander and Willow had been giving each other. The guilty look that had been in Xander's eyes for the past few weeks. Willow's jumpiness around her. Cordelia couldn't believe she hadn't put the pieces together sooner. She fought to hold the tears back. "Damn you, Xander," she whispered to herself. "Why did you make me fall in love with you?" Xander had been a completely new experience for her. She'd never actually cared so much about a guy before. Usually she dated them till she was bored, then broke up with them and bestowed the honor of dating Cordelia Chase upon another, cuter guy. And then Xander came along. She'd hated him for years. Never expected to talk to him, let alone date him. But she'd gotten swept into the Scooby gang. Spending more time around Xander. And then that day they'd kissed in Buffy's basement . . she knew she'd been a goner right there, but she refused to admit it to herself. But Xander had gotten to her. He'd made her laugh, he made her furious with his constant insults, and he made her feel special without even meaning to. And she'd fallen in love with him. And she'd thought he loved her too. But this. Cordelia had always been afraid she'd lose Xander to his beloved Buffy. But she'd been aware of the threat Willow possessed. She had prayed Xander would never wake up and realize what a beautiful, intelligent girl Willow really was. But Willow had seemed happy with Oz, and Xander never gave her much of a second look. Willow was his best friend. Cordelia was his girlfriend. The line was drawn. But obviously Xander had woken up. And Willow had never fallen out of love with Xander. The kiss she'd witnessed proved that beyond a doubt. She knew she couldn't compete with Willow. But she didn't want to let Xander go. Xander was the only person who knew the real Cordelia, who saw her beyond the exterior she presented. She didn't want to lose him. She didn't want to lose that. So what was she going to do? She knew the more she held on to him, the more he'd slip away. She let out a sigh of frustration and regret, and wiped away the tear that had escaped from her eye. She wasn't going to cry. Not yet anyway. She knew what she was going to do. She was going to break up with Xander before he had the chance to dump her. And she'd act like she didn't care, that he hadn't meant that much to her. She wouldn't show how much she was hurting, how much she did care. The Cordelia Chase reputation would be intact. But she would know. And she thought Xander would too. She wasn't going to tell him she'd seen him with Willow. She'd keep that to herself. If Xander decided to tell her, that would be okay, but she wouldn't tell him. She'd let him go. And she wouldn't look back. "But I'm going to keep on loving you, Xander. Because I don't know how to let you go," Cordelia whispered. "I don't know how to let you go." She looked around a little anxiously, suddenly aware how odd her being here at this time of the night might look to the neighbors. Getting a little impatient, she knocked again. Finally, the lock rattled and the door creaked open revealing a half asleep, bathrobe clad Giles. The sight of his Slayer standing on his doorstep at 2am shook Giles awake. "Buffy i-is everything all right? What's happened?" He ushered her inside and shut the door behind her. "It's a long story, Giles." She said with a sigh. "Do you have any coffee?" "No, no coffee, but I can make a pot of tea?" "Tea would be good." she replied sinking down onto the couch. ========= Giles came out of his office still reading a book. "Buffy, I think I've found..." he began before he noticed she was sound asleep, head pillowed on a book at the large library table. After she had told him everything that had happened with Spike, they'd come to the library to do some research. They had been researching through the night together. Searching for something, anything that would explain Spike's behavior. He sighed deeply and shook his head. Pulling his glasses off he massaged the bridge of his nose and wondered how his Slayer had managed to fall in love with a vampire again. She was the strangest girl, but she was his Slayer and he had found the answer she was looking for. Giles gently placed a hand on Buffy's shoulder and shook her gently. She came instantly awake. "Giles! Did you find anything?" "Y-Yes, I-I think that I have." he said "Well then, what are you waiting for? Spill it." Then she added quickly "And in English." "Um, well, I found a reference in one Watcher diaries about a vampire who didn't always kill his victims. The Watcher wrote that this certain vampire was in control of his demon." "His soul was restored? Like Angel?" she questioned "No, well, not exactly. Mr. Sacamoto hypothesized that somehow this vampire had maintained or regained a degree of his humanity." "So, what you're saying is, that it's possible that Spike could be in control of the demon?" "Yes, well to a degree. It would explain his feelings for you and the fact that he cared for Drusilla all those years after the incident in Prague." Buffy jumped up from the table and hugged her Watcher. "Thank you, Giles. You're the best. I gotta go find Spike." Then she was jogging across the room towards the doors. "Buffy, I don't suppose I need to remind you..." he called, but she was already out of the library. "to be careful" he finished to himself. ========= It was early afternoon by the time Buffy reached the abandoned warehouse that was currently serving as Spike's lair. Buffy climbed in an open window and carefully looked around. Since it was daylight, the minions were no where to be seen. Buffy finally found Spike's room and quietly slipped inside. She immediately saw Spike on the bed and went over to him. Her heart lodged in her throat. He wasn't breathing. He looked dead. Buffy smiled a little to herself for being silly. He was dead and he didn't need to breathe she silently reminded herself. Spikes eyes fluttered half open and he regarded her for a moment. "Have you come to kill me, Slayer?" he asked in a quiet voice. She was shocked by his words. "No, I don't want to kill you. I just wanted to see you. I talked to Giles..." she stopped talking when she noticed his eyes were shut again. Spikes eyes fluttered open once more. "Lay with me, Luv? I want to hold you." Buffy quickly scrambled onto the bed and snuggled up next to Spike, pillowing her head on his shoulder. Spike pulled the blanket over the two of them. Then he kissed her forehead and whispered "I love you" into her hair before drifting back to sleep. Buffy couldn't help the grin that spread across her face. She felt so safe in his arms, so contented. But, most of all she felt loved. With a sigh she drifted off to sleep as well. Things were going to work out for them she could feel it. Love had found a way. ================ The end - Masquerade series, part 7 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 13:33:41 -0800 (PST) From: Black Fire Subject: BUFFYFIC: Legacy of the Burgunds (3/?) Title: Legacy of the Burgunds Author: Black Fire Email: blackfire42@yahoo.com Feedback: Please? Spoilers: This part comes after Homecoming. I need to see what happens with the next few episodes. For now, this is like a subplot to the current storyline. Disclaimers: I don't own any of the Buffy characters and I can't afford to. (Though, I wish I could, a least afford to.) Wolf and any other characters (I haven't even given them all names yet, how lame) are mine. Please do not use them without asking. Summary: This story is heavilly based in Germanic/Norse mythology, particularly, on the Saga of the Volsungs. Two of the greatest legends of the past have returned, bringing who-knows-what with them. Legacy of the Burgunds Chapter 3 -- An Incident... or Two Later that night, at the Bronze, Buffy and the rest sat in their usual corner discussing school, slaying and anything else that came to mind. "Hey! Wolf's back in town," Willow chimed in. "Wolf?" Cordelia ask. "You mean that gorgeous, would-be football player guy with the nice eyes?" Willow nodded, smiling. "Oooo... yum," Cordy said, gaining a jealous look from Xander. "Yeah, Buffy and I saw him this afternoon," Willow explained. "I think Buffy liked him." "Now what made you think that?" Buffy asked. "Well, you... did that thing with your mouth again," Willow babbled. "And you really seemed to like talking to him." "Oh," Buffy blushed. "But that could mean anything. He's a nice guy. He's funny. He's normal. What's not to like?" "Hey," a voice interrupted. Everyone turned to see Wolf walking up to them. They all waved their hello's and welcome backs. "So..." he said, taking a seat, "what are you all doing here in the corner? Not conspiring or anything, I hope." "What? Us?" Xander asked. "Not at all. Why?" "You had a look about you," Wolf said. "You know, that kind of look that should send most of this town screaming in fear. You know the look I'm talking about. I saw it about you all summer." "Oh *that* look!" Xander exclaimed. "That's just us... being us, you know." "Uh huh..." Wolf nodded, smiling as if he knew more than he let on. "Hey Buffy!" Faith yelled as she approached in a hurry. "What's going on," Buffy asked. "Hey,... hello!" Faith stopped short as her eyes caught sight of Wolf. "Why didn't you tell me there were munchies like this one around?" "I didn't know he was around until today," Buffy answered. "What's up?" "Too bad," the other slayer said. "Nothing right now. Just keeping my eye on the dance floor." "Oh?" Buffy looked. There were a couple questionable characters out there. She watched as they left with their intended victims. "Not a problem," she said grabbing her bag and Faith, who was staring at Wolf, rather than watching the vampires. "Don't go away," Faith ordered Wolf as Buffy dragged her away. * * * * * The fight didn't last long. In fact, with Faith along, it was even shorter than usual. Buffy got the two girls away, while Faith staked one. She then finished off the second herself. "Not bad," Faith said, brushing some dust off her shirt. "Not bad at all," the slayer replied. "I was talking about the hunkster inside," Faith said. "Oh..." Buffy was cut off by the sound of howling. They turned as a wolf came loping up to the Bronze. It seemed to ignore them and head straight for the door, causing a bit of a scene. The bouncer tried to get the creature to go away, but it just sat down some distance from the entrance and waited. "I said get out of here," the man at the door shouted as people hurried inside. The wolf ignored him and stayed where it was. "Is there a problem?" Buffy asked, approaching the bouncer. "Yeah!" the bouncer yelled. "That flea bag's scarin' away the patrons." This gained a seemingly insulted growl from the wolf, but that was all. She barked once, twice, then howled again. This time, the bouncer tried swatting the animal with a stick. It only evaded the attack and sat back down. "Thrudhr!" Wolf yelled as he walked out of the Bronze. He walked straight over to the wolf. "I told you to stay home." "Is that your animal?" the bouncer yelled. "No," Wolf said, his golden eyes flashing as he turned to face the man. They were almost the same size. "This is not my animal. She is my friend." Wolf knelt beside the creature, "I told you to stay home with father." The wolf's tongue lolled out of her mouth. She whimpered and licked Wolf’s cheek. “Okay,” Wolf laughed, as if he understood her. “She’s beautiful,” Buffy said, staring. The wolf stood at over half Buffy’s size, with pale, blue eyes that sparkled within her masses of gray hair. As Buffy spoke up, at last, the Thrudhr finally turned her attention to her. There was a low rumble, not quite a growl, heard as the wolf stared at Buffy and Faith. "They're friends," Wolf said, stroking his companion's neck. "This is Buffy and..." "Faith," the other slayer chimed in. This seemed to calm Thrudhr down, though she still kept her distance. "Are you through with your introductions?" the Bouncer asked, mockingly. "'Cause I want that creature outta here, or I call the cops." "She's leaving," Wolf told the guy. He looked at the wolf, "Go on home. I won't be here much longer." Thrudhr didn't seem to like being sent home. She gave Wolf an odd look, much like that which a mother would give a child, and loped off. "Now," the bouncer said, "I want you out of here too. You've caused enough trouble." "But he didn't do anything," Buffy defended. "I don't care," the guy argued, "he's caused enough trouble, he and that wolf, I won't have them causing any more. And if you don't like it, you can just go home too, missy." "Fine," Buffy said, turning to leave. Wolf watched her walk off into the night. And, up on the roof, a small brown cat, who had seen the entire event, mewed as she stared, intently down at the entrance to the Bronze... watching. * * * * * == The Black Fire | Vote for me in the Site Fights!!
