Recap
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/recaps/981231/bbitts.html

"No. 10 Tulane completed the best season in school history with a new coach and a convincing 41-27 victory over Brigham Young in the Liberty Bowl.  Quarterback Shaun King accounted for three touchdowns and cornerback Michael Jordan returned an interception for a score to lead Tulane (12-0), which set a school-record for wins.  The Green Wave could be the nation's lone unbeaten team if top-ranked Tennessee falls to Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday.

"King tossed two scoring passes, including a perfectly-thrown 60-yard TD strike to Kerwin Cook, and ran for another touchdown as the Green Wave shattered their record for points in a bowl game. Tulane, which snapped a four-game bowl-losing streak, beat Temple, 20-14, in the 1935 Sugar Bowl.

"Forced to play without suspended running back Ronney Jenkins, the Cougars' offense scored on its second possession, but then was held out of the end zone until adding three tallies in the fourth quarter.  Brigham Young (9-5) suffered its first bowl loss since falling to Ohio State in the 1993 Holiday Bowl.

"The Cougars drove 65 yards in seven plays early in the first quarter and took a 6-0 lead when Kevin Feterik hit Ben Horton for an 11-yard touchdown. BYU received a penalty for excessive celebration and the 35-yard extra-point attempt was blocked, an ominous sign because the Cougars would not score again until 11:38 remained and Tulane had the game well in hand.

"Brad Palazzo booted a 31-yard field goal for Tulane's first points and BYU was driving on the ensuing possession when Jordan stepped in front of Feterik's pass into the right flat and raced down the left sideline for a 79-yard score.

"King and Cook hooked up on a 37-yard completion on the ensuing drive that placed the ball on BYU's 4-yard line and moments later King barreled his way for a three-yard TD run. Palazzo's 23-yarder with 41 seconds left in the half gave the Green Wave a 20-6 lead.  King compiled 385 yards offensive yards. He completed 23-of-38 passes for 276 yards without an interception and added 109 yards on 16 carries for the Green Wave, who amassed 528 yards to 321 for the Cougars.

"Tulane's offensive fireworks continued right away in the second half. On the fourth play of the third quarter, King lofted a pass down the left side for Cook, who hauled in the perfect strike for the 60-yard touchdown. King found Jamaican Dartez on a 13-yard score just over six minutes later for a 34-6 Tulane lead.

"Aaron Cupp ran for a three-yard score early in the fourth quarter for BYU and hauled in a five-yard TD pass from Feterik with 9:24 left. Junior Mahe, who gained 70 yards on 16 carries in place of Jenkins, added a three-yard run with 1:30 remaining to complete the scoring.  Feterik was 27-of-44 for 267 yards with one interception and Horton caught six passes for 67 yards for the Cougars."

Cougs Look for Ways Out of Funk
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/2/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/01021999/sports/71601.htm

"It was not a particularly merry Christmas for the BYU Cougars.  The black cloud hovering over Coach Steve Cleveland following last week's loss at UC-Irvine was still firmly in place when the team returned to practice on Tuesday.  And it is sure to remain there unless the Cougars can get things turned around today with a win over Utah State in the Marriott Center.  ``I've had enough growth experiences,'' says Cleveland. ``It's time to start winning some games.''

Just a thought: Maybe the Cougs need a new look
The Provo Daily Herald (1/2/98)
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/50B40901C803F6D8872566ED0026D533?OpenDocument

"There wasn't much left in the rubble of the Liberty Bowl.  But perhaps the BYU coaching staff found the germ of an idea.  Even as Shaun King was marching Tulane up and down the field while the Cougar offense pretty much stayed stuck in neutral, you started thinking, well, maybe... Maybe this New Year should signal a slight change in philosophy for BYU football.

"If so, it would start with the realization that the good old days have come and gone. That the dizzying passing game which once terrorized hapless foes needs to be re-tooled.  Why?  It's simple. For all the obvious reasons, BYU isn't likely to recruit the kind of players who can walk out and dominate a football game.  Likewise, defenses have developed complicated zones, blitzes and press coverages to take away all those easy completions the Cougs once enjoyed.  Bottom line: Without a very special quarterback or even a runner like Ronney Jenkins, BYU can't spread the field or put defenses back on their heels anymore."

Morris, Tait undecided on turning pro
The Deseret News (1/1/98)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30004277,00.html?

"As disappointing as was Thursday's 41-27 Liberty Bowl loss to Tulane, two BYU players who may be turning pro said they haven't decided their futures yet.  Cougar linebacker Rob Morris and offensive tackle John Tait said after the game that they were still deliberating. "I have no comment right now," said Morris. "I'll think about my options.  I've talked to some people."

"Asked about his future, Tait replied, "My publicist, Rob Morris, will be in contact with you guys.  That's all I have to say."  Both players said they plan to talk with LaVell Edwards before deciding. "I'm going to have a long talk with Coach Edwards," said Morris."

Cougs no strangers to USU's Morrill
The Deseret News (1/2/98)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30004361,00.html?

"Though coach Stew Morrill is in his first season at Utah State, nobody has to indoctrinate him about Saturday afternoon's opponent.  As his 7-3 team arrives at the Marriott Center for an in-state battle with BYU (the game will be televised live on Ch. 5), he is well-acquainted with Cougar basketball.  After all, Morrill, a Provo native, will experience a homecoming of sorts.

"In addition, he was a candidate for the BYU coaching job a couple of years ago after the firing of Roger Reid and he previously coached the Cougars' WAC rival, Colorado State. His Ram teams met BYU on a regular basis for years (he's defeated BYU six straight times).  He also knows one vital piece of information about this season's Cougars: They are college basketball's version of Jekyll and Hyde."

Game Recap

"Silester Rivers' layup with 11.5 seconds left gave Brigham Young a 61-59 win over in-state rival Utah State on Saturday.  BYU (5-7) led the entire game until Pharoah Davis' free throws put the Aggies up 59-57 with 1:41 to play. Mekeli Wesley tied
the game with two free throws for the Cougars, and Donnie Johnson missed a short jumper for Utah State (7-4).

"After a timeout, BYU worked the ball to Michael Vranes, who led all scorers with 21 points. Vranes drove the baseline and passed to Rivers, who made an uncontested basket that was just his second of the game.

"Rashad Elliott missed a 3-pointer as time expired, and the Cougars beat the Aggies for the 130th time in the schools' history.  BYU snapped a two-game losing streak, while the Aggies' two-game winning streak also ended.   Vranes, a freshman, carried the Cougars most of the afternoon, hitting many key shots and grabbing nine rebounds.  He scored or assisted on 12 of BYU's final 14 points of the game.

"Johnson led the Aggies with 14 points, while Troy Rolle added 10. Davis had nine points and nine rebounds but was just 3-for-10 from the field.  Wesley and Nathan Cooper each had 15 points for BYU, whose leading scorer on the year, freshman Mark Bigelow, was 1-for-12 from the field but had 10 rebounds and six assists."

Young Stuns Packers 30-27 with TD with 3 seconds left
http://www.cnnsi.com/football/nfl/1998/playoffs/news/1999/01/03/49ers_first/

" Terrell Owens hoped for a moment of redemption.  It came at the last instant from Steve Young, and he grabbed it.   It left him in tears.

"Owens, who had four drops and a fumble earlier, leaped in a crowd to catch Young's 25-yard touchdown pass with three seconds remaining, giving the San Francisco 49ers a 30-27 NFC wild-card victory over the Green Bay Packers.

"It's a great thing, an emotional thing," Young said. "That play will be attached to 49ers' lore for a long time. I'll always remember it."

Cougar offensive lineman Tait heading to NFL
The Deseret News (1/4/99)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30004630,00.html?

"BYU offensive tackle John Tait has played his final game for the Cougars.  The 6-foot-7, 307-pound junior made it official Monday — he's headed for the NFL.  'After much thought and deliberation, I made the decision to enter the draft,' Tait said. 'I am grateful to coach LaVell Edwards and coach Roger French for supporting me and preparing me for this next step in my football career.'

"Tait, a two-time first-team All-WAC honoree, told BYU coach LaVell Edwards of his decision on the team's flight home from Memphis following the Cougars' 41-27 loss to Tulane in the Liberty Bowl Thursday."

Miller heading to Montana
The Provo Daily Herald (1/4/99)
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/1646EC4FFF29F09E872566EF0026D726?OpenDocument

"Drew Miller, a backup quarterback at BYU, has announced he will transfer to Montana and enroll in classes there this spring.  "I'm excited," Miller said Friday in an interview with the Missoulian newspaper. "I just want to start over, and these last two years of playing football I want to go out with a bang."

"The 6-foot, 190-pound Miller, who will be a junior next season, said Montana was a natural choice because of its passing offense and because he wouldn't have to sit out a season after transferring down to an NCAA Division I-AA school."

Cougars Fell Short of Expectations
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/4/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/01041999/sports/71951.htm

"Even though their college football season ended in disappointment and was filled with far more turmoil and travesty than meaningful victories, many of the BYU Cougars said they enjoyed it while it lasted.

``I had a great time this year,'' said senior safety Chris Ellison. ``Funnest year I ever played in football. It was great, man. Even the coaches had a great time.''

New year looks better for Rivers
The Provo Daily Herald (1/4/99)
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/497CF1B34A7D5E8C872566EF0026D824?OpenDocument

"The odyssey that is the Silester Rivers story received a new chapter Saturday afternoon. His layup with 11.5 seconds left provided the difference in BYU's 61-59 victory over Utah State, and was a nice beginning for Rivers in 1999.  Because December of 1998 was a nightmare.  Rivers was in a car accident before the Cal game on Dec. 19, injuring his shoulder.   Strep throat kept the 6-7 power forward out of practice all this week, and a torn muscle in his back was causing him more pain."

Best part of BYU's football season came in middle of campaign
The Deseret News (1/4/99)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30004569,00.html?

"Call it the Oreo principle.  BYU's football season was a lot like the popular cookie — the best part was in the middle.  The rest? Well, it's safe to say LaVell Edwards wouldn't mind washing it down with a glass of milk.  A 2-3 start that included an embarrassing loss to WAC pretender Fresno State and an 0-2 finish capped by an uninspired effort in the Liberty Bowl served as bookends for a season that also featured a seven-game winning streak. The roller-coaster campaign left the Cougars with a 9-5 record and not a single week in the Top 25 rankings."

Utes vs. Cougars: Intrastate Rivalry Opens WAC Season
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/9/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/01091999/sports/73435.htm

"Michael Vranes has watched Andre Miller for the past three seasons.  Tonight, he finally gets to play against him.  BYU's talented freshman point guard draws perhaps his biggest assignment tonight when the Cougars meet the University of Utah at the Huntsman Center in a WAC opener. Vranes hasn't exactly been obsessing about Miller, a preseason All-American who guided the Utes to the NCAA championship game last year -- but he is looking forward to the test."

Jenkins Rules Out NFL, Considers Playing in Canada
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/9/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/01091999/sports/73432.htm

"Expelled from school and facing precious few promising football options, former BYU running back Ronney Jenkins is considering playing professionally in Canada, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.   However, he apparently is leaning toward transferring to another school to finish his college career.

"The 21-year-old Jenkins did not declare himself eligible for the NFL Draft by the deadline Friday, as some suspected he would. Instead, he's deciding whether to try to play in the Canadian Football League for a couple of seasons to prepare himself for the NFL, or sit out a year and play one more season in the college ranks.

"No matter where he might transfer -- even to a lower-division school -- Jenkins would be ineligible and have to sit out next season because of the way his expulsion from BYU has affected his academic standing. That would leave him with only one more year of eligibility."

"Just the way a good middle linebacker should, Rob Morris plugged the hole on Thursday.  Stopping the steady stream of bad luck that has plagued the BYU Cougars since the end of the college football regular season -- the back-to-back losses to finish the season, the expulsion of star running back Ronney Jenkins, the departure of offensive tackle John Tait to the NFL -- Morris announced he will stay in school for his senior season.

"The decision instantly legitimizes the Cougar defense for next season.  The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Morris almost certainly will be a leading candidate for the Butkus Award, given annually to the nation's top linebacker, and will anchor a linebacking corps that also will benefit from the eligibility of transfer Jeff Holtry from Michigan. Holtry played at West High before spending two seasons with the Wolverines, with a church mission in between."

BYU 1999 Football to Open on ESPN

Rondo Fehlberg , BYU's Athletic Director, announced that BYU will have their first two football games broadcast by ESPN.  Both the Washington and Colorado State home games will be moved to ESPN's Thursday night lineup and carried nationally.  Other television deals are in the works that will broadcast more BYU games regionally and nationally.

Y. freshman Bigelow glad he chose Y.

"Mark Bigelow said it was weird watching Utah play in the NCAA Championship game last March. Months earlier, Rick Majerus came to his house in Olympia, Wash., and offered the high school senior a scholarship.  Bigelow turned it down.  "I could be going there, but I have no regrets," said Bigelow. "BYU was the place for me. I was dedicated to coming here."

Mountain West gets an automatic berth in NCAA tournament
The Deseret News (1/9/99)

"March Madness has come early for the Mountain West Conference — as in 14 months early.  The MWC, which debuts this fall, has averted a potential obstacle by receiving an automatic bid to the 2000 NCAA men's basketball tournament.  Ordinarily, a newly formed conference must wait five years to earn an guaranteed spot for its regular-season or league-tournament champion.  However, partly because the league has had seven of its eight members together for nearly two decades, the NCAA waived that requirement."

Cleveland's attitude adjustment
The Deseret News (1/7/99)

"By his own admission, Steve Cleveland wasn't much fun to be around during the holidays.  BYU's second-year basketball coach was stewing over an embarrassing 82-75 loss at Cal Irvine on Dec.  22. And thanks to the schedule-maker, there was nothing he could do about it until Jan. 2 — when the Cougars made amends with a 61-59 victory over Utah State."

Game Recap

Andre Miller had 24 points and Hanno Mottola added 22 points and nine rebounds as Utah won its sixth straight game, crushing archrival Brigham Young 75-54 on Saturday night.

Utah won its 29th straight home game, the fifth-longest streak in the nation, to extend its school record for consecutive home wins. The Runnin' Utes, who never trailed, finished a three-week homestand with a 6-0 record and won for the eighth time in their last nine games.

In the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams, Utah (11-4, 1-0 WAC) used a patient offense keyed by Miller who was 11-for-17 from the field and had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals and stifling defense to overwhelm the Cougars (5-8, 0-1 WAC).

BYU has lost three of its last four games and eight straight in this heated rivalry. The Cougars have trailed by double digits in the first half of all but one of their road games this season.

Utah opened the second half with a 16-6 run and led by as many as 27 points before going scoreless for nearly six minutes late in the game. BYU made a 12-0 run in the closing minutes that made the final score respectable.

Brigham Young never recovered after failing to get a field goal on its first 10 possessions. The Cougars trailed 9-1 before Todd Christensen's jumper with 13:30 left in the half.

Moments later, Utah made a 15-0 run, holding BYU scoreless for over four minutes. Miller was scintillating during the rally, hitting five straight shots, including a 3-pointer that made the score 27-7 and brought the selloutHuntsman Center crowd to its feet.

Falcons fly to first NFC Championship Game
http://www.nfl.com/news/98recaps/week19/sfoatl.html

" The running of Jamal Anderson and an opportunistic defense again provided the winning formula for the Falcons, who dethroned the 49ers as NFC West champions with a franchise-best 14-2 record and hosted a playoff game for the first time since 1980.

"Anderson rushed for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns and the Falcons intercepted 49ers quarterback Steve Young three times in the second half, two of which set up field goals by Morten Andersen. Anderson scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and broke off a 34-yard TD in the second quarter.

"The 49ers, who stunned the Green Bay Packers last week with a touchdown pass with three seconds left, pulled within 20-18 with 2:57 left when Young scored on an 8-yard run and Ty Detmer hit tight end Greg Clark on the two-point conversion after a high snap."

Ties to Holmgren Pay Off For Former Y. Lineman
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/12/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/01121999/sports/74139.htm

"Andy Reid did not become the Philadelphia Eagles' head coach because of his football playing ability.  When Mel Olson uses the word ``steady'' to describe Reid as a Brigham Young offensive lineman in 1979-80, he's being kind.  Yet Reid took advantage of opportunities to learn from offensive minds such as Doug Scovil, Ted Tollner and Mike Holmgren as a Cougar player and graduate assistant coach. He became part of the Holmgren network of coaches, leading to a job with the Green Bay Packers and, as of Monday, the Eagles.

"Other coaching developments have BYU connections.  The next NFL coach hired could be Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Brian Billick, a former BYU tight end.  He already has interviewed with the Cleveland Browns and will be available to other teams once the Vikings' season ends.  The University of Washington's hiring of Rick Neuheisel also affects BYU -- the Huskies will come to Provo for the 1999 season opener."

Unreleased Jenkins mulls options
The Deseret News (1/12/99)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30005822,00.html?

"Nearly three weeks after being dismissed from BYU for violating the school's Honor Code, Ronney Jenkins' future remains in limbo, and his options are limited.  A host of Division I-AA schools, meanwhile, are hoping to become the star running back's next destination. South Florida, Cal State-Northridge, Southwest Missouri State, Southern Utah and Northern Arizona have expressed interest in him, the Deseret News has learned.

"But BYU has not yet released Jenkins from his scholarship. As per NCAA rules, no school can talk to him, nor can he transfer, until the release is officially granted.  "At the request of Ronney Jenkins' family, there has been a temporary hold on releasing him from scholarship," said BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins. School officials would not elaborate, citing confidentiality issues."

NCAA Delays Action On MWC Hoop Berth
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/12/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/01121999/sports/74151.htm

" The NCAA management council on Monday discussed an automatic berth to the men's basketball tournament for the new Mountain West Conference, but delayed action until it can gather more information.  The 34-member council will take up the topic again at its next meeting in April.   At issue is the recommedation that the NCAA waive the usual five-year waiting period for a new conference to be granted an automatic berth into the 64-team tournament. The Mountain West Conference begins competition next fall.  Some athletic directors from smaller conferences are worried that they could lose their automatic berths if more are granted so easily to new leagues."

Game Recap

Mark Bigelow scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Brigham Young to its first road victory of the season, an 83-76 triumph over San Diego State on Thursday night.

Michael Vranes and Brian Dignan scored on consecutive layups to give BYU a 78-72 lead with 26 seconds left after the Aztecs had gotten within two points on four straight free throws.

The Cougars (6-8, 1-1 WAC), who entered the game with an 0-6 road record, extended the poorest start for San Diego State (2-13, 0-3) since the Aztecs went 2-23 to open the 1985-86 season.

Matt Watts, who led San Diego State with 22 points, gave the Aztecs their last lead at 53-49 with 9:55 left after making a 3-point shot and a layup following a steal.

BYU responded with a 14-4 run for a 63-57 advantage with 5:48 to go.  In that stretch, Danny Bower sank two 3-pointers for his only points of the game.

Silester Rivers and Vranes each added 14 points for the Cougars.  Marcelo Correa had 13 points and nine rebounds for San Diego State.

Jenkins' chapter closes with ideal gesture by BYU
The Daily Herald (1/15/99)
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/AC0A1E1F712ECB6A872566FA005F5485?OpenDocument

"The door didn't slam shut behind former BYU running back Ronney Jenkins Wednesday night. The way back into school and onto the football team was boarded up for the final time last month.  But there was Jenkins, meeting with school president Merrill Bateman on campus two days ago, seeking to find a way through a different door.

"Bateman stuck a crowbar in the frame of NCAA rules and cracked them open a bit. Jenkins now has a chance to slip off to another football program the way he darted through holes for the Cougars for two seasons, before a second violation of the Honor Code cost him his BYU careers, both educational and athletic.  It wouldn't be surprising if some complain about Bateman's decision to let Jenkins withdraw from school instead of leave with "dismissed" stamped on his university records."

Cougs Allow Jenkins to `Withdraw' From BYU
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/14/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/1999/jan/01141999/sports/74702.htm

"Ronney Jenkins and members of his family met with BYU President Merrill J. Bateman and Vice President Fred Skousen on Wednesday, and secured a change in the language of Jenkins' expulsion from school three weeks ago that should allow the star running back to transfer to a Division I-AA team without having to sit out a year.  Jenkins has been allowed to "withdraw" from BYU, the university said, rather than be "dismissed."

"Jenkins was expelled from BYU on Dec. 24 for violating the school's Honor Code for the second time in two years. But because he was considered punitively dismissed, NCAA rules apparently would have prohibited the sophomore from transferring to any school without having to sit out a year. Typically, athletes who transfer to a school in a lower NCAA division -- for instance, from Division I-A BYU to Division I-AA Weber State -- are not required to sit out a year."

Cougar Volleyball Plays No. 5 Ohio State
BYU Press Release
http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_m/releases/011399.html

"The BYU Men’s Volleyball team, ranked 6th in the nation in preseason polls, travels to Ohio to take on the 5th-ranked Buckeyes. The matches will be played at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday, January 15 and 16 at 7 p.m.

"The Cougars kicked off their season with two wins over MPSF opponent UC Irvine, January 7 and 8 at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah. BYU hit .373 for the two games and held Irvine to a .190 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker Ryan Millar led the team, putting down 36 kills out of 50 attempts, hitting four services aces and totaling 14 blocks in the two games. Outside hitter Ossie Antonetti totaled 25 kills, 11 digs and six blocks."

Utah's Majerus is closet Y. fan
The Deseret News (1/13/99)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30006012,00.html?

"Who would have guessed that Utah coach Rick Majerus is a closet BYU fan.  After his team's easy 75-54 victory over the Cougars Saturday night, the big man admitted it.  He likes BYU.  "I think BYU has a nice ballclub, I'm happy BYU is good," he said. "I don't care if they win every game but ours. I really like LaVell Edwards and I felt sad for LaVell when they lost that football game (in the Liberty Bowl). I pull for him every game but Utah."

Hey, can you spare a gym for Bradley?
The Deseret News (1/13/99)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30006007,00.html?

"He will face Alonzo Mourning and Shaquille O'Neal in a few weeks, but right now, Shawn Bradley is trying to go one on one with himself. He wants to do a solo workout, but just try finding a vacant gym in Utah during the winter months.  "Junior Jazz makes it hard," he says.

"So does carpet. A few years ago, somebody came up with the bright idea of replacing wooden floors with carpet in LDS church gyms. Great for quilting parties; horrible for hoops and knees.  All Bradley wanted was a place to meet privately with his personal trainer, Tony Ingle, the former BYU coach. A few months ago, Ingle offered his services to Bradley free of charge.  He was a coach without a team, he explained, and he wanted to coach somebody.  That's what he lives for.  As soon as the NBA lockout ended, Bradley, who was staying in his Park City condo to open his new restaurant, called Ingle and asked him to get him in shape for training camp.  They agreed to do two-a-day workouts at whatever gyms they could find. That's when the fun began."

Falcons soar past Vikings, fly into first Super Bowl

"The Vikings scored on their first four possessions, two following turnovers, to build a 20-7 lead.  But the Falcons scored a touchdown in the final minute of the half after forcing a turnover. Falcons defensive end Chuck Smith stripped the ball from Cunningham and Travis Hall recovered the fumble at the Minnesota 14-yard line. On the next play, Chandler drilled a scoring pass to Mathis with 56 seconds left in the half to pull Atlanta within 20-14. "

Mekeli Wesley hit a 25-foot shot from the top of the key with 3.1 seconds left Saturday night to give BYU a 60-59 come-from-behind victory over Hawai'i.

The Cougars (6-8, 1-1 Western Athletic Conference) trailed by 17 points with 10 minutes in the game, but rallied behind the work of Michael Vranes and Silester Rivers. Vranes scored nine points and Rivers seven during the run.

But it came down to Wesley putting up the winning points after Hawaii's Casey Cartwright missed the back-end of a 1-and-1, giving the Rainbows a 59-57 lead with 11.7 ticks left.   Rivers grabbed the rebound and passed to Vranes, who relayed it to Wesley for the winning shot.

Game Overview

BYU takes on the Bulldogs of Fresno State Saturday night for the first time in the Steve Cleveland era.  The Cougars come into the matchup on a roll, having won three consecutive WAC games, including two gutty, hard fought wins on the road at San Diego and Hawai'i, and a home blowout of San Jose State.  The three game winning streak is the longest for the Cougs since winning four in a row in December of '95.

Fresno State brings a talented team to the Marriott Center, led by guard Chris Herren and guard Courtney Alexander.  The Bulldogs have played a tough schedule so far, beating the likes of #15 New Mexico, #25 Temple, and SEC power Georgia, but fell short to #1 Duke and #20 Wisconsin.  An interesting twist to this contest is the fact that San Jose State, who was manhandled 75 - 44 by the Y this week, beat FSU by 27 earlier this month.  So far this season, the Bulldogs have only won 2 of 7 games away from Fresno, while they are 10-1 at home.

Implications

At 3-1, BYU is currently tied with New Mexico for 2nd in the WAC Pacific Division standings, just a half game behind Utah (3-0).  Every game from here on out is against a conference opponent, and will probably play an important role in the Cougars' post-season plans.  It will be especially important to score wins in the home games.

Keys to the Game

Throughout the season, coach Cleveland has insisted that the Y needs to produce inside to win consistently.  These past three games have proven his wisdom, as Silester Rivers and Mekeli Wesley have given the Cougs a 1-2 punch down low that they lacked earlier in the season.  Their continued good play will draw Fresno defenders down low, opening up the outside for the perimeter players.  Look for BYU to play zone against FSU to slow down Alexander (3rd in WAC scoring at 20.6 ppg).  The Cougars have been able to win their last two games without high scoring games from Mark Bigelow (3 pts. at Hawai'i, 4 pts. vs. SJSU), but another scoring outburst from "Bigtime" would be welcome.  Forward Nathan Cooper had probably the best two games of his freshman campaign vs. Fresno State.

But when I am needed, I'm sure I'll be able to contribute."  Because opponents are focusing on stopping Bigelow, Bigelow has found other ways to contribute.  He currently leads the team in scoring, rebounding, steals, and free throw percentage.

Ronney Jenkins Chooses Northern Arizona

Ronney Jenkins has enrolled in classes at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.  He will have two remaining years of eligibility to play for the Lumberjacks of the Big Sky Conference.  Jenkins and the Lumberjacks will play Weber State in Utah and former teammate Drew Miller's Montana team during the season.  One source says Jenkins will also compete in track for NAU.

Game Recap

"Courtney Alexander scored 27 points and Chris Herren had 14 points and seven assists as Fresno State held on for a 79-75 win over Brigham Young on Saturday night.

Both teams stumbled down the stretch of a continually tight game.  Willie Farley's 3-pointer with 2:52 to play was the only field goal by either team in the game's final 5:15, but it gave the Bulldogs a 78-73 lead.

Herren missed three free throws in the last 1:02 to keep it close, but BYU missed its final seven shots of the night, including four straight on its final possession. The Bulldogs were a miserable 11-for-30 from the free-throw line in the game.

The Cougars (8-9, 3-2 Western Athletic Conference) had their three-game winning streak snapped in front of a sellout crowd of 21,645.  The Bulldogs (13-6, 3-1 WAC) took over sole possession of second place in the WAC's Pacific Division and won in Provo for the first time in school history.

Fresno State led 37-23 with 4:30 left in the first half, but an 18-5 BYU run before halftime cut the Bulldogs' lead to 42-41. Alexander, who was 11-for-18 from the field, scored 16 points in the first 11:58 of the half.

Farley had 13 points for the Bulldogs, who shot 53 percent from the field.  Silester Rivers had 16 points and 13 rebounds for BYU, while Michael Vranes scored 17 points before fouling out.

Over 21,000 saw a great game tonight! . . . BYU outrebounded FSU by 7 and matched them in turnovers.  If not for about 7 missed layups, the Cougs claim the victory . . . Brian Dignan came in and played great defense on FSU's star guard Alexander.  He was shooting 70% in the first half.  Even with 'Dig' in his backpocket, he shot his way to 27 points and our vote for an NBA draft pick . . .

Next Game: Jan. 28 @ UTEP

Nelson says Shawn Bradley can contribute as 'dominant' role player
http://www.dallasnews.com/mavericks-nf/mavs2.htm

After high hopes in two seasons at Dallas, Shawn Bradley has been moved to the Maverick's 6th man.  "I still see Shawn playing around 30 minutes a game," Coach Don Nelson said. "He's still my center.  But I want him to focus on doing what he does well for us - blocking shots, rebounding. He has to anchor our defense.  I want him to be a role player in a dominant way."

Bradley responded to move by saying he will go with what the coach thinks best and continue to make himself the best basketball player he can be.

Hard Work, Luck Helped Vranes Overcome a Cruel Twist of Fate
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/26/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/01261999/sports/77987.htm

In December of 1994, Michael Vranes, then a junior at Taylorsville High School, went to play pick-up basketball with some friends at a church gym.  During the game, he stepped on a friend's foot, turned his ankle, and affected the next 4 years of his life.  What was originally diagnosed as an ankle sprain turned into seven surgeries.  Specialists had to repair various tendons and bones over the next four years keeping him out of basketball and causing him to return home from his mission early.

But, after all the pain, he is now back to playing and contributing as the starting point guard for the Cougars.  "It is wonderful," he says. "When I go out on the court, it's like,  `Wow, I can play! I can play!'  I'm just thankful that I can run and jump again.  I've learned patience and determination, and gained confidence that I can overcome anything."

"I just felt really good down there (in Provo)," Tahi told the Deseret News Sunday night. "I just felt like that's where I wanted to go. When I got there I was really happy and interested."

Rigell explains his decision to leave BYU
The Deseret News (1/25/99)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30008050,00.html?

Mike Rigell, BYU's freshman wide receiver, told KSL he is leaving the Cougars because "coaches plan to to reinstate Jaron Dabney as their primary kick returner next season."  Dabney was the 1997 WAC Freshman of the Year before sitting out last year because of academic issues.  Rigell may transfer to Montana where high school and former BYU teammate Drew Miller transferred to.

BYU's Kehl Took the Roundabout Route To Arrive at Happiness
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/25/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/1999/jan/01251999/sports/77788.htm

This article recounts the amazing story of BYU defensive end Ed Kehl's childhood.  He was born in Florida and named George McWhorten.  His mother left him with his father after he was born, but returned nine years later to claim him.  She avoided his father's family by moving him seven times in one year around the South.  "She was kind of abusive and stuff like that," he says. "Every time I said anything wrong, I'd get beat to death."

Eventually, after his mother decided she didn't want to take care of him anymore, an LDS couple arranged to have him adopted.  His new parents were Gary and Nancy Kehl of Sandy Utah.  (See link above for full story)

Kehl recently played in the Hula Bowl for college seniors and hopes to land with an NFL team.

Nathan Call, 29, joined BYU's coaching staff in April, 1997.  He had been an assistant coach to Jeff Reinert at Utah Valley State College for three seasons. Coach Nathan CallHe joined the staff at UVSC after an outstanding basketball career at BYU. At UVSC, he helped the Wolverines to records of 22-10 in 1994-95, 29-6 in 1995-96, and 24-8 in 1996-97.

An All-WAC point guard, he earned honorable mention All-America honors in 1992 for BYU.  That year he led the Cougars to a 25-7 record, the Western Athletic Conference title and an NCAA tournament berth.  He was named to the WAC's all-defensive team and set a BYU record for career games with 129.

The two best seasons for assists were produced by Call, 204 assists in 1991-92 and 164 assists in 1990-91.  Called the most underrated player in the Western Athletic Conference, the gritty point guard routinely excelled with the toughest defensive assignments.

Twice Call answered the offensive challenge in heroic fashion in 1992.  At Colorado State he drove the length of the court in the closing seconds of regulation to knot the game at 62-all. In overtime the 5-11 senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., scored six of his 23 points to lead BYU to victory. A couple weeks later in Provo, again in the closing seconds of the game, Call drove the length of the court against Utah, but dished off to Gary Trost for the winning layup.

At Tulsa (Okla.) the honorable mention All-America scored a career high 30 points and was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Call served an LDS Church mission to La Paz, Bolivia.

Before playing at BYU, Call was a standout athlete at Capistrano High in California. He earned All-CIF honors in basketball, football, and baseball, and was named Southern California High School Athlete of the Year.

Cougars Need 2 Big Games From Jepsen
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/28/99)
See: http://www.sltrib.com/01281999/sports/78451.htm

The article points out the Cougars need for Jepsen to play big during this road trip.  "We're really going to need Bret on this trip, because [UTEP's] Sharif Fajardo and [New Mexico's] Kenny Thomas are two of the best big men in the league," says Cleveland. "We need Bret to rebound, and we really need the defensive presence he can give us."

Last year, on the same road swing, Jepsen contained both Fajardo and Thomas leading to two Cougar wins and a trip to the WAC tournament.  "There are times when he performs very well, and there are times when he doesn't meet his, or our, expectations," says Cleveland. "The most frustrating thing is, the passion for the game, the competing hasn't been as consistent as I'd like. Bret has been very aggressive at times. At others he's been very passive."

Bonneville High's Brett Cooper, brother of former BYU player Jason Cooper, has verbally committed to BYU.   Cooper was all-state in Utah this season as a wide receiver and could make an immediate impact at BYU -- once he returns from a mission, which he will serve right after graduating from high school.

Cooper made his final decision after visiting Utah this last weekend.  "After the trip to Utah, I figured that I felt more comfortable at BYU," said Cooper.

A .500 Season Not Out of the Question for Y.
The Salt Lake Tribune (1/27/99)
See: http://www.sltrib.com/1999/jan/01271999/sports/78251.htm

BYU (8-9, 3-2) is well on its way to having its first .500 season in 3 years.  The Cougars will have to take care of its home court and win a couple on the road, but evening out their record and making it back to the WAC tournament -- both goals this year -- is in reach.

BYU will try to get a jump start on those goals this weekend as they visit UTEP and New Mexico.

Blue clues: Rebuilding no longer a topic at BYU
The Deseret News (1/28/99)
See: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30008556,00.html?

The Cougar basketball office, once answering a thousand questions about how to get BYU back to winning, is feeling a change.  "I think everyone expects to win," said freshman Michael Vranes. "And when we don't, we don't just sit and say, 'Oh, we gave it our best shot.' There's no excuses."  "There's a different aura about this team. We don't expect to lose, or just get lucky and win. We're expecting to win. That's the bottom line," added forward Mekeli Wesley.

The Deseret News (1/28/99)
See: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,30008571,00.html?

BYU Coach Cleveland's son Skyler Cleveland "nailed a triple-double Wednesday night, and the Timpview High senior even flirted with a quadruple-double.  He only needed one more steal to notch the rare feat, but he still had a heck of a game."  Skyler finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals in Timpview High School's 90-60 thrashing of Spanish Fork.

Game Recap

Texas-El Paso's Brandon Wolfram paced five players in double figures with 21 points as the Miners downed Brigham Young 87-72 Thursday night.

Rico Nelson scored 18 points for UTEP (12-7 overall, 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) on 5-of-7 shooting from behind the three-point line. Sharif Fajardo followed with 14 points while Eggie McRae and Jarvis Mullahon scored 11 points apiece.

The Cougars fell to 8-10 and 3-3.

Fajardo and William Smith led UTEP with six rebounds each. The Cougars were led by Mekeli Wesley and Mark Bigelow, who scored 11 points apiece.

The Miners led by nine points at the half and in double figures throughout the second period.

UTEP's biggest lead of the game was 85-65 with 1:08 remaining. But BYU's Nate Shappell shot two free throws and a three-pointer by Nathan Cooper helped close the gap.

The Miners shot 56 percent from the field, 31-of-55, for the game.

It was the first time in 12 outings that UTEP had hit at least 50 percent of its field goals.

Game Overview

BYU returns to "The Pit," where they ended New Mexico's 41 game home winning streak last season.  The 83 - 62 win last March was a definite shot in the arm for the Y, and the Cougars would be more than happy to repeat the performance.  Coach Cleveland will look for solid performances from his players to compete with the nationally ranked Lobos.

New Mexico, currently ranked #18, returns several key players from last year's 24 - 8 squad for this, the 100th meeting of the two teams.  Center Kenny Thomas and forward Lamont Long are two of the most explosive players in the conference, both averaging close to 20 points per game.  All five UNM starters average double digits in the scoring category, but depth has been a liability for the team this season.  Also, while definitely talented, the Lobos have been streaky, knocking off big opponents such as Arizona, while dropping their last two games to New Mexico State and UTEP.  The two game losing streak is only their second in the past four years.

Implications

Rest assured that New Mexico hasn't forgotten last year's blowout in Albuquerque, and revenge has to be weighing on their minds.  Both teams are coming off of two game losing streaks, and could benefit greatly from a win as they prepare to meet division leading Utah in their next games (New Mexico on Monday, 2/01, and BYU on Saturday, 2/06).

Keys to the Game

BYU will need production from every position to counteract the talent and athleticism of the Lobos.  Point guard Michael Vranes suffered from tendinitis in his knee earlier this week but was able to play at UTEP.  Shooting guard Mark Bigelow has been realitively unable to find the hoop over the past four games, and the team needs him to return to his sharpshooting ways.  The Cougar big men have steadily improved and contributed more and more over the season, and will be called on again to combat New Mexico's powerful inside game.

Game Recap

A shattered backboard helped New Mexico freshman point guard John Robinson break out of his shooting slump.  Robinson and Kenny Thomas led a 17-2 run by New Mexico (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 18 AP) after the broken backboard halted play in the second half of the Lobos 78-68 victory against Brigham Young on Saturday night.

Robinson, who lost his starting job this week because he has been struggling with his shooting and ballhandling, scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the run that put New Mexico safely in front.  "They left me open and I hit em," Robinson said.  "I love that. If every teams wants to do that, that's fine with me."

BYU center Bret Jepsen broke the glass on the backboard at the north end of The Pit while dunking home an offensive rebound that got BYU within 51-43 with 17:42 remaining.  After a 30-minute delay to install another basket, New Mexico (17-4, 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) came out sizzling, while BYU's offense fizzled.

Robinson scored back-to-back 3-pointers and a reverse layup, Kevin Henry hit a 3-pointer and Thomas scored six points with two offensive rebound baskets and a pair of free throws that made it 68-45.  The Cougars (8-11, 3-4) hit four of their first five shots in the second half. After play resumed, they missed eight of nine and in one stretch committed four straight turnovers. Jepsen twice was short on 5-footers.

"That half hour took some energy from us," BYU coach Steve Cleveland said.  "The Robinson kid hit two big 3s. He was the guy we wanted to shoot the ball. If he doesn't knock them down, it stays at six or eight points and it's a different game.  "But we didn't have an answer for Kenny defensively at that point and we wanted to front and back him. It just didn't work."

Robinson committed eight turnovers in the Lobos' 67-49 loss at Texas-El Paso last Saturday and shot just 6-of-23 over the previous three games.

BYU went 5:21 without scoring before Mekeli Wesley broke the drought with a 10-foot bankshot. Wesley led the Cougars with 24 points and Mark Bigelow scored 15.

Both teams spent the 30-minute break in their locker rooms and Henry said that gave the Lobos plenty of time to adjust to what the Cougars were doing offensively at the start of the second half.  "They scored on like their first four possessions and coach went over what we did wrong to leave them so open because they were hitting 3s. It helped a lot," Henry said.

Thomas, who sat out the last 11:46 of the first half with two fouls, finished with 18 points. Lamont Long scored 20, while Robinson scored 12 of his 14 in the second half.

Long scored 16 points in the first half as New Mexico opened up a 31-17 lead with 8:43 remaining. But BYU slowly cut into the deficit and with two minutes gone in the second half, a 17-foot jumper by Michael Vranes got BYU within 47-41.

Thomas and Long hit layups before the 6-foot-11, 245-pound Jepsen sent glass flying.

BYU starting guard Nathan Cooper broke the little finger on his right hand on a drive to the basket in the opening minute of play and is expected to be out from two to six weeks.

Insider Views

BYU now has fallen to 6th place in the Pacific division, but holds a 2 game cushion over 7th place Hawaii.  Since six teams are taken from each division, a berth in the WAC tournament looks promising, but the goal of a .500 record is more daunting.  The Cougars would have to win 5 of their last 7 games to even out at 13-13 for the season.  With 5 of 7 games at home and one of the road games at San Jose State, the task is not impossible.  What is assured however, is an improvement on last year's 9 win season.  The loss of Nathan Cooper with a broken finger is a big blow to the Cougar's aggressiveness.
