Browns hoping newest QB will be starter, mentor
See: http://www.cnnsi.com/football/nfl/news/1999/02/22/browns_detmer/index.html

If Ty Detmer is going to be his teacher, Tim Couch promises he'll study hard. Detmer set 59 NCAA records during his career at Brigham Young, and won the Heisman Trophy with the Cougars in 1990 after passing for more than 5,000 yards and 41 TDs as a junior. Couch was just a kid then, but remembers watching Detmer shred defenses.  "I followed him when he was at BYU and I'm familiar with the kind of offense he ran there because we ran BYU's offense at Kentucky," he said

John Tait's Combine Diary

Tait talks about his first week at the NFL combines in Arizona.  He went through various tests including a psychological one that asked him whether he'd like to be a dog or a cat.  He answered "dog."  This is fun reading.  You can also email a question to Tait to be answered in next Tuesday's diary entry.

Tait is impressive at NFL combine
See:  http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/0221cards.shtml

Tait, the Brigham Young University junior who is considered the best offensive line prospect in this year's NFL draft, had a strong showing Friday at the league's scouting combine.

He bench pressed 225 pounds 26 times and wowed NFL scouts during his interview.

"He's big, strong, athletic and we had an impressive meeting with him," New Orleans Saints General Manager Bill Kuharich said.  "I'm not usually big on BYU (offensive linemen), but he really came off well," an NFL executive said. "What a prospect. What a nice young man."

"Some people said, "Stay for the Outland (Trophy),' " said Tait, 24. "I'm not big on that stuff. I was getting good reports back from the NFL and thought I was ready."

ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper predicts Tait will be the first lineman chosen and will go 10th overall in the April 17 draft.  Sports Illustrated has him going 12th.

The Arizona Cardinals, who need offensive linemen, surely will consider him with the eighth pick.

Which TCU Team Will Show up Today? BYU Is Eager to Find Out
See: http://www.sltrib.com/03021999/sports/87482.htm

TIPOFF:     3:30 p.m. MST @ Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas
TV:         KSL (Channel 5)
RADIO:      Cougar Network, including KSL (1160 AM)
RECORDS:    BYU 11-15 overall, 6-8 WAC; TCU 19-9, 7-7
SERIES:     Tied, 3-3
LAST MEETING:     TCU won in Provo 92-80 in 1997. In the first game that season, the Horned Frogs punished the Cougars 101-61 in Fort Worth, Texas.
AT A GLANCE:      The 1998 scoring champion, TCU's Lee Nailon again leads the WAC in scoring at 22.4 points per contest. He also averages 9.2 rebounds.  The Horned Frogs lead the conference in scoring (87.9 points) but are last in defense (80.9).

"The BYU Cougars could have done worse in the draw for their first-round opponent at the WAC men's basketball tournament, but not much. Texas Christian is everything the Cougars are not: quick, athletic and capable of beating anyone in the field on a good day.

Yet, the Horned Frogs have also had their share of bad days, and that should give BYU some hope as it prepares for its postseason opener today at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas (3:30 p.m. MST). Despite possessing one of the most gifted rosters in the league, TCU has dropped nine games -- including four in a row at the end of January."

Game Recap

Nathan Cooper had 24 points as Brigham Young may have ended Texas Christian's NCAA tournament hopes with a 90-74 victory Tuesday in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.  Cooper had eight of his 24 points in a 16-1 run early in the game that gave BYU a 16-5 advantage, and the Cougars never trailed the rest of the way.

The win moved BYU (12-15) into Thursday's quarterfinals with a matchup against rival Utah, the tournament's top seed.

The Cougars shot 13-29 from 3-point range. Michael Vranes was 5-for-7, Mark Bigelow was 4-for-5 and Cooper connected on 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc.  Four BYU players scored in double figures, offsetting Lee Nailon's 33 points and 13 rebounds for TCU (19-10).  Nailon and teammates Ryan Carroll and Shannon Long all played the final 10 minutes of the game with four fouls.

BYU was aided by three technical fouls called in succession against Nailon, Lee and the TCU bench midway through the second half with the Cougars leading 62-57.  BYU went on a 12-5 run to pull ahead by 12 points and was never seriously threatened the rest of the game.

Bigelow had 20 points while Vranes had 19 and Mikeli Wesley added 17.  Carroll had 17 for TCU.

Game Overview

BYU is coming off of two great games, having blown out UTEP for their regular season finale, and knocking off a very talented TCU team in round one of the WAC tourney.  The team has been shooting well and getting solid performances from pretty much everybody who has logged playing time.  Tuesday's win was noteworthy as it marked the first tournament victory for the Cougs in five years.

Utah enters the game riding a 19 game winning streak and a number eight national ranking.  The Utes are probably on more of a high right now than they were a year ago at this time, shortly before advancing to the national championship.  Last week's blowout of #21 New Mexico completed a season which saw them become only the second team in WAC history to finish the conference schedule undefeated, and gave them their fifth consecutive regular season conference title.  Their consistently suffocating defense has made them an insurmountable obstacle for opponents for the better part of three months.  Simply put, they are very good.

Implications

For BYU, a loss would spell the end of the season, whereas a win would propel the Cougars into the WAC semi-finals.  Knocking off the Utes would also turn heads in a big way, and would probably be the best publicity the team has had in a very long time.

Keys to the Game

BYU has created some momentum in its last two games by coming out and playing to win, and it will be crucial to keep that momentum going.  The players have to put the other two Utah games from earlier in the season out of their minds and go out and play their game.  Granted, the Utes are very heavy favorites in this game, but the beauty of tournaments is that anything can happen.

BYU's women's basketball team lost a close game to Southern Methodist University 75-60 in the quarterfinal round of the WAC Tournament.  The game ended the team's WAC season with a 16-12 overall record and and 9-6 conference record.

No. 1 BYU Travels to No. 11 USC, Cougars Look To Extend Win Streak
See: http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_m/releases/030399.html

With dreams of a national championship and a perfect record still intact, the No. 1 BYU men's volleyball team (15-0, 11-0) travels to USC (14-7, 6-5) on Saturday, March 6.  The Cougars are coming off a two-match sweep of then-ranked No. 2 UCLA over the weekend, while USC enters Saturday's MPSF contest having lost five of its last six matches, including a 0-3 home-court loss to No. 2 Pepperdine on Tuesday.

"Even though USC has been struggling lately, that doesn't mean we are going to approach this match any differently," BYU head coach Carl McGown said. "In addition to being one of the prominate programs in the country, USC has a significant home-court advantage. Their gym is small and very dark and they will have a couple hundred fans who are right on top of you. It is a very challenging place to play."

Following this weekend's contest at USC, the Cougars will depart for a three-match swing in San Juan, Puerto Rico, beginning March 11-13. BYU will face American University, Concordia University and the Puerto Rican national team.

On the men's side, NCAA record holder Leonard Myles-Mills will compete for the Cougars in the 60 and 200-meters, and Jim Roberts will compete in the shot put.

The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Butler University, will take place on March 5-6 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Game Recap

Andre Miller scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half as eighth-ranked Utah extended its school-record winning streak to 20 games with an 81-62 victory over Brigham Young in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

The Utes (25-4) will play Tulsa in Friday's semifinals. Utah, which ran the table in the WAC Pacific Division, defeated its archrivals three times this season by a combined 65 points. The Utes have won eight straight games between the schools to move within two victories of evening the all-time series.

Silester Rivers scored 23 points for BYU (12-16), which made a three-win improvement from last season. The Cougars fell behind 41-26 at halftime and fell apart after the Utes had a seven-point possession early in the second half.

Unlike the first two games between the teams, BYU hovered within striking distance and trailed 43-34 on a dunk by Rivers with 16:42 to play. Hanno Mottola hit a jumper for the Utah and, after a miss by the Cougars, Alex Jensen was fouled attempting a 3-pointer, starting BYU's collapse.

Nathan Cooper was called for the foul and also whistled for a technical. Jensen sank 2-of-3 free throws and Mottola made the pair from the technical. After a TV timeout, Tony Harvey drilled a 3-pointer to give the Utes a 52-34 bulge with 15:24 to go, effectively ending the game.

"That pretty much sealed our fate, but I am not sure what happened," said Cougars coach Steve Cleveland. "I never really did get an answer from anybody."

"That was a huge play," admitted Jensen. "I think it took the air out (of them) and was the turning point."

The Cougars got no closer than 15 points the rest of the way, while Utah took its largest lead at 81-52 on two free throws by Jeremy Killion with 3:43 to play. BYU scored the final 10 points to make the final score respectable.

Utah established control from the outset, scoring the first 11 points. Nate Althoff had the final four in the run, including a dunk 3:35 into the game. A 3-pointer by Ryan Christensen pulled the Cougars within 17-9, but Miller started and ended an 8-0 burst with layups, giving Utah a 25-9 advantage with 9:55 remaining.

The Utes shot 59 percent (16-of-27) from the field in the first half en route to a 41-26 lead after 20 minutes. Mottola finished with 14 points and Phil Cullen netted 12 and seven rebounds off the bench for Utah, which had a 34-22 rebounding edge.

Mark Bigelow had 14 points for the Cougars, who shot 43 percent (20-of-47) from the field.

"They are a real physical team," said Bigelow. "They are fundamentally sound and they work hard and they just do things well."

#8 Utah to face #21 New Mexico in WAC Championship

Semi-Final scores:

SMU 56, #21 New Mexico 57
Tulsa 61, #8 Utah 64 (OT)

Coming of a tough overtime contest with Tulsa, Utah moves on to face #21 New Mexico for the third time this season.  Utah has dominated both previous meetings.  New Mexico, although ranked, it still considered on the bubble of a NCAA tournament bid.

Cleveland confident that BYU is back on the winning track
See: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,70000305,00.html?

BYU basketball coach Steve Cleveland would admit that the team's improvement this season was not dramatic, but that things are moving in the right direction.  "Put one foot in front of the other and move forward," said Cleveland, whose team won three more games than it did a year ago and claimed a victory in the WAC Tournament for the first time since 1994.  "All indications are that we are improving. We competed in almost every game."

The toughest challenge facing Cleveland for next year is replacing mission-bound Mark Bigelow.  The WAC Pacific Division Freshman of the Year lead the team in scoring and rebounding.  "Personally this year was everything I hoped for and lots, lots more," said Bigelow. "I just wish we would have won a little more."

Football Opens Spring Practice

Just as you were gloating about the end of basketball season, the BYU football team reminds you that football season is only a summer away.  Friday marked the start of spring practice for the team and opens questions for next year.

Among the questions are:  How will BYU replace star running back Ronney Jenkins?  How will BYU rebound from the loss of 10 starters?  Who will the quarterback position shape up?  The above two articles attempt to answer many of these questions.

Practices will run four times a week, including scrimmages once a week, until the annual Blue & White Scrimmage on March 27.

Cougars grab honors at NCAA track meet
See: http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/D1A7537F70E103BF8725672C002C3396

The BYU women's team is in 4th place at the NCAA Track Championships after the first day of competition.  "Emily Nay led the women with a fifth-place finish in the 5,000 meters, setting a BYU school record and earning All-American recognition with her time of 16:09.41. Tara Rohatinsky grabbed the second All-American award for the women, placing ninth in the 5,000 with a personal best of 16:20.92."

"We're very pleased with all our ladies," women's coach Craig Poole said. "They represented BYU very well, and we're excited about tomorrow when we've got the 3,000."

On the men's side, Leonard Myles-Mills will compete today in the 60-meter finals.  "Jim Roberts, the only other BYU men's team member competing at the NCAAs, earned an All-American award in the shot put, finishing sixth with a mark of 61-7."

Baseball drops game to Hawaii

Sean Takamori hit an eighth inning triple in the left-center gap Thursday to give Hawai`i a 3-2 victory over BYU in WAC baseball action.  Takamori's triple drove in Rah-Miel Mitchell who had been hit by a Micah Mangrum pitch. Mangrum hit four UH batters in the game. Mitchell drove in the other two Rainbow runs in the second inning on one of three Hawaii hits that inning.

The Cougars (7-11 overall, 2-2 WAC) played Hawaii (14-5, 1-3) late Friday night and had another game scheduled today.

USC-BYU volleyball matchup a battle of youth vs. experience
See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=9565

BYU's top-ranked volleyball team will look to make #11 USC its next victim tonight.  The main difference between the two teams is experience.  BYU is led by seniors Ryan Millar and Ossie Antonetti while USC has no seniors on its roster.

Nonetheless, Coach McGown still fears the Trojans.  "They're a very scary team," McGown said. "They have lots of very good young players that can play volleyball."

The Cougars will next play at home March 19 when they host Long Beach State in the Marriott Center.

MWC seeking site for its tournament
See: http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/486494A61B5A849E8725672C002C3386

The WAC basketball tournament made its home in Las Vegas for many years and it looks like the new Mountain West Conference may move in after the previous renters depart.

"We will have a tournament," BYU athletic director Rondo Fehlberg said. "We've decided that.  "Now we're looking at options for a site. I'd say the most probable option is Las Vegas. However, some of our presidents have reservations."

Another opponent of Las Vegas as a tournament site is Utah coach Rick Majerus.  While not fond of a conference tournament in itself , Majerus strongly opposes Las Vegas as the tournament location.  "I don't like having the kids in casinos.  It's too much temptation," says Majerus.

Women's soccer travels to Arizona for weekend contests

The BYU women's soccer team, although not in season, is back on the field and competing.  The Lady Cougars will face Arizona and Arizona State this weekend.

"The BYU team starts spring play a little earlier than most schools because the term ends sooner.  The Cougars already traveled to St. George two weeks ago and blanked Ricks College 13-0 and defeated Dixie College 6-3."

Men's Volleyball Keeps Perfect Season Alive, Improves to 16-0
See: http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_m/results/030699.html

After stumbling to No. 11 USC in game one, 9-15, the top-ranked BYU men's volleyball team reeled off three straight wins (15-9, 15-8, 15-5) to collect its 16th straight victory of the season.  The match marked only the seventh time in 1999 the Cougars have been extended past a third game, and was only the third time this season BYU has lost the first game of a match. With the win, the Cougars improve to 16-0 on the season, while USC has lost six of its last seven matches, falling to 14-8 on the year.

Next weekend will be a homecoming of sorts for All-American Ossie Antonetti and Hector Lebron. The Cougars will play three matches in their native Puerto Rico, beginning March 11-13. BYU will return home on Friday, March 19, when the Cougars face No. 3 Long Beach State at the Marriott Center.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m. (MST).

Turning in two stellar performances in the 3,000 meters, the BYU women's indoor track and field team finished the NCAA Championships in sixth place Saturday, tying with Pittsburgh with 23 points. The finish is the highest ever for a BYU women's indoor track and field team.

Sophomore Sharolyn Shields led the Cougars Saturday by breaking a BYU school record in the 3,000 meters, placing third with a 9:18.15.  Senior Maggie Chan was right behind her with a fourth-place finish, running the event in 9:19.28.

The two finished off a list of eight All-Americans for this year's women's indoor team. On Friday, Emily Nay and Tara Rohatinsky both earned All-American status for their performance in the 5,000 meters and all four members of the Cougars' distance medley relay team earned the honor for their second-place finish.

QB Engemann still impressive

Both these articles talk about Bret Engemann's recent return to the BYU football team after his LDS mission.  Many of you remember him being mentioned during President Hinckley's interview on Larry King Live.

Engemann is back and impressing the coaches and players with his arm strength.  "He's going to be a good one, no question about that," said coach LaVell Edwards.  "This guy could be something really, really special," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said.  With Kevin Feterik as the incumbent starter, Engemann and 5 other quarterbacks will be vying for playing time at the backup spot.

Cougar coaches do some chatting about the shotgun

Another coach was in town this week attending BYU's spring practices.  Rich Rodriguez.  His name is familiar to BYU fans as the Tulane offensive coordinator that guided the Green Wave to last year's victory in the Liberty Bowl.  "We thought it would be a good idea to go over some things Tulane has perfected," Cougar offensive coordinator Norm Chow said.

One of those "things" is the shotgun.  "What we got out of it," Chow said, "is how critical timing between the release of the pass and the receivers is, and how Tulane pulled the trigger on it."

"They're a very balanced team, with good inside and outside play," Coach Trent Shippen said.  "And they're at home, and they have a really loud crowd. That always helps. It will be tough."

John Tait Draft Diary: Wrestling Anyone?
See: http://cnnsi.com/football/nfl/news/1999/03/09/diary_tait/

"All the focus shifts now from the combine to personal workouts. For me, at least, this is a big deal because a lot of teams want to see me because I'm only a junior. Wednesday is my first workout down in Scottsdale, Arizona, with two more scheduled for later this month.

I heard that one time at a workout at Nebraska, a scout told a defensive lineman to wrestle him. He just said, "OK, let's wrestle." Guys were looking at each other, wondering what to do, and the scout just grabbed him and next thing you know, they're wrestling. It's crazy, but you hear all sorts of stories like that. I hope nobody asks me to wrestle -- I haven't since my freshman year in high school. I'll try not to hurt anyone."

"My parents put so much time and money into gymnastics so I could do what I loved," Broekman said. "My mom was a receptionist at the gym to help pay my tuition, family vacations were postponed so I could go to meets. Even when things were tight they found a way to keep me in the gym. Long Beach State’s 13-15, 9-15, 15-7, 15-9, 14-16 victory, powered by an NCAA record-breaking 58 kills by David McKienzie, ended BYU’s 20-match regular season unbeaten streak.  McKienzie took 106 of LBSU’s 227 swings.

“Long Beach is a great volleyball team,” said BYU head coach Carl McGown.  “They played back row defense exceptionally well.  They flat out beat us.”

Playing in only its second game-five contest of the season, BYU racked up a 14-12 lead to come within one point of closing out the match before committing one service error and three consecutive hitting errors to hand Long Beach the 16-14 win and the match.

The article also mentions the BYU media relations departments campaign to help linebacker Rob Morris with the Butkus Award.  Miniature trains will be sent to season ticket holders and media personnel to remind them about "Freight Train" Morris.

Pochman, Sowards like mop-up roles
See: http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/314840A12722575D8725673D002C33C3

Being a kicker is not a glamorous role on the football team.  Generally it is to kick the ball away to the other opponent.  Punter Jesse Sowards described it this way:  "Kickers are a necessary evil."

Most kickers are not on scholarship, although they practice with the main team and play more often than a lot of scholarship players.  Despite the lack of attention, BYU has generally had very good kickers.  This fall, returning starter Owen Pochman will resume placekicking duties.  Pochman has only missed 2 PATs the last two seasons.

The men's soccer team has won three consecutive national club championships and four out of the last five.

Tracksters Take First and Second at Cal Poly Invitational
See: http://CougarFan.com/teams/track/news/1999/03-22.html

With rain drenching the competition facilities at Cal Poly for half the meet, the Brigham Young University men’s and women’s track teams competed against only one full team of the three they came to face.

The men’s team, competing without top runners Leonard Myles-Mills and Kenneth Andam, took ten first-place finishes to win the meet with 201 points. Myles-Mills and Andam are recovering from injuries. The women’s team also recorded ten first-place finishes, but came in second with 201 points, one fewer than winner Utah State.

Because of the inclement weather, host Cal Poly withdrew several of its athletes, while the University of California withdrew completely.  “It was an issue of money,” said men’s head coach Willard Hirschi. “We spent a lot more to get there from Utah than USC did to take a few buses down, and the same with Utah State.”

Blue and White Game Concludes Spring Practice

Without starting QB Kevin Feterik, RB Junior Mahe and linebacker Rob Morris, the rest of the BYU team played an entertainng spring game today.  Key starters are traditionally held out to prevent injury.  The White team led by QBs Charlie Peterson and Bret Engemann blanked the Blue team 28-0.  Both sides spent the game almost exclusively in the shotgun throwing the ball.

While the game meant a lot to some players trying to jump in to starting positions, some veterens enjoyed the afternoon with a little time on the other side of the ball.  Cornerback Brian Gray played several downs at wide receiver, but didn't get the chance to catch a pass.  Wide Recievers Michael Westbrook and Ben Horton played one down on defense that turned out to be one of the more entertaining plays of the game.  Brandon Doman threw a 15 yard strike to Andrew Ord who was delivered a crushing tackle by temporary free safety Michael Westbrook.

Butkus Award candidate and BYU middle linebacker Rob Morris feel next season's BYU defense could be even better than the fifth ranked defense of last season.  A key factor for the return of the nationally-ranked defense are the cornerbacks.  Heshimu Robertson should return in in August after a suspension due to the Honor Code.  Brian Gray is trying to secure his schoolwork to remain academically eligible.  Another player that could make an impact is JC transfer York Frierson from Los Angeles Southwest JC.  He too must prove his academic competence to be eligible.

Following its first-ever 3-0 victory over No. 2 Pepperdine (18-3, 13-3) on Friday, the third-ranked BYU men's volleyball team (21-1, 14-1) closed out its regular-season home schedule with a second straight three-game sweep over the Waves Saturday night.  The game scores were 15-12, 15-6, and 15-7.

"Tonight was a great match", said BYU head coach Carl McGown. "We played great in every aspect of the match. For us to beat Pepperdine in three straight games on back-to-back nights is a great accomplishment."

"I have to give credit to BYU," Pepperdine head coach Marv Dunphy said. "They are a real good team and deserved to win. To have a team like this and be able to play in this kind of environment, it's great for men's volleyball.  "People know about the fans here at BYU. Not just here in Provo, but throughout the country. People know what it's like to play volleyball here."

On Saturday, Shane Belliston homered in both games to help BYU to a doubleheader sweep over Southern Utah, 7-3 and 9-3.  Belliston hit a solo shot in the third inning, but it was teammate Chris Circuit’s three-run homer in the seventh inning that put the Cougars in position to withstand an SUU rally in the bottom of the seventh.

The Cougars, now 17-15 overall, have beaten the T-Birds in four of five meetings and are scheduled to play them in Provo on April 12-13 in a three-game series.
