BYU to phase out men's gymnastics and wrestling
See: http://CougarFan.com/teams/general/news/1999/04-01.html

After long and careful study, Brigham Young University announced that it will phase out the university’s men’s gymnastics and wrestling teams.

"This has been a very difficult decision, but one that had to be made," said BYU Advancement Vice President K. Fred Skousen.  "Across the country, fewer schools are sponsoring men’s gymnastics and wrestling teams. The trend is particularly apparent in our new Mountain West Conference, where even before BYU’s decision there were not enough teams in wrestling and men’s gymnastics to conduct an NCAA qualifying conference championship."

BYU plans to phase out the two sports programs over a one year period, meaning all incoming seniors will be able to complete their eligibility at BYU during the 1999-2000 school year.

Men's Volleyball rises to #2 in latest poll, eyes #1
See: http://cougarfan.com/teams/volleyball_m/news/1999/04-01.html

After defeating then-#2 Pepperdine twice last weekend, the men's volleyball rose to #2 in the latest national volleyball rankings.  The top-ranked team is Long Beach State who handed BYU its only loss of the season.  However, No. 1 Long Beach State was defeated last night by UC Irvine, 3-0.  By virtue of their loss, second-ranked BYU now holds the overall MPSF lead with a 14-1 record.

At this time, BYU is poised to be the first seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament coming up April 26-29.  In the current scenario, BYU would host all games as long as they continue winning through the tournament.

The top five teams in the nation are:

1  Long Beach State 17-2
2  BYU              21-1
3  Pepperdine       18-3
4  Ohio State       17-4
5  UCLA             16-6

Y. fans can toot their horns for Morris

In an effort to promote Rob Morris for next season's Butkus Award -- the award given to the top linebacker in the nation -- BYU marketing has created a campaign around a new nickname.  Meet Rob "Freight Train" Morris.  The name stems from an interview with Brent Musburger last season where Morris compared sacking a quarterback to a freight train hitting a Yugo.

Orem High School Basketball Star Opunui Signs
See: http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/0A847665B811DDD88725674C0027EE17

Shawn Opunui, who previously committed verbally to the Cougars basketball team, made it official Wednesday by signing his letter of intent.  He averaged 21.4 points and 6.1 assists for the Orem High squad.

"He is the kind of kid (BYU) is looking for," Orem coach Matt Logan said. "He's athletic, he can guard people and can break defenses down with his dribble. That's what they've been lacking."

Opunui told SportsNight's Greg Wrubell that he is 99% sure he will serve a mission before joining the basketball team.  His future backcourt partner, guard Mark Bigelow, recently received his mission call to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Although Opunui was the only signee on the first day, a few junior college players may sign the dotted line for the Cougars in the near future.  The possibilities include UVSC's Nate Knight and Danny Brotherson and Fresno City's Michael Garrett and Terrell Lyday.

John Tait selected 14th in NFL draft

Former BYU offensive lineman John Tait was selected 14th in the NFL draft Saturday by the Kansas City Chiefs.  It was speculated that Tait could go as high as Arizona's 8th pick, but the Cardinals decided to stock up at wide receiver instead.

Tait is the first BYU player to be selected in the first round since 1987 when Shawn Knight and Jason Buck were picked No. 11 and No. 17, respectively.

You can check other BYU players drafted in later rounds at: http://nfldraft.espn.go.com/html/school/school_listB.html

San Diego State’s 23-14 victory Friday over BYU marked the first time in over 40 years that an opponent has won a three-game league series in Provo.

The Aztecs took advantage of four Cougar errors and clubbed six home runs Friday as they batted through their order in the second, fourth and sixth innings.  BYU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run homer by Gary Johnson and unearned runs scored by Ryan Pond and Isaac Iorg.

The Cougars, now 19-25 overall and 7-13 in the Western Athletic Conference,  are idle because of finals and graduation until next Friday when they play at Oklahoma State for three non-conference games.

The Cougars, remember, are scheduled for a seven-game tour that takes them to England and Spain from June 22 to July 4.  "Compared to coming back from a mission and just spending the summer lifting weights and playing pickup ball, this is certainly better," said coach Steve Cleveland.

Rugby team sets to make statement about Sunday play
See: http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=10556

The BYU rugby team hopes to change the national rugby tournament forever.  How?  Every year the championship game is played on Sunday, and every year the BYU team withholds from entering the tournament although favored to win it all --- until this year.  BYU will try to win its first three matches and make it to the Sunday championship game where it will forfeit.  That statement, they hope, will force a change in the day the championship is played.

"The Cougars are ranked second in the nation headed into Saturday's Sweet 16 national playoff match against the University of Arizona in Colorado Springs, Colo.  If they beat Arizona, the Cougars will go on to the national finals in San Francisco May 1-2. The finals will be televised on Fox Sports."

Men capture 2 NCAA gymnastics titles
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,80000914,00.html

Guard Young and Cortney Bramwell helped to show the strength of the BYU men's gymnastic's program, winning individual titles in the vault and the rings, respectively, at last weekend's NCAA championships.  The two became BYU's first individual champions since 1975.

Both Young and Bramwell are juniors, and will be back for the Cougar's final year of men's gymnastics.  The program will be discontinued at the conclusion of the 1999-2000 season.

"It's pretty frustrating," Bramwell said. "BYU is doing better as a program than it has ever done, and now we're being dropped. It's tough."

New Identity : Cougs May Change Their Logo
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/apr/04241999/sports/100444.htm

BYU is considering making a change in the logo that appears on uniforms, football helmets, and other athletic apparel.  The purpose of the change would be to help update the Cougars' visual identity.  Merchandising revenue certainly plays into the decision as well.

Over the past few years, BYU has made changes to the mascot Cosmo, and has moved toward changing the traditional royal blue to a darker color. Any changes that take place with the logo will be announced before football season starts this fall.

"We are reviewing things and trying to decide what we want to do," associate athletic director Val Hale said. "That doesn't mean we're going to change anything. It does mean we are evaluating it."

Judkins may leave Utah basketball to join BYU staff
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,80000574,00.html

Jeff Judkins has spent several decades helping the University of Utah achieve basketball success, both as a player and an assistant coach.  He is now considering a change of pace, namely accepting a job as Director of Basketball Operations for BYU.

Judkins has seen his duties with the Utes shift somewhat over the past few years, and has spent less and less time working with the players, and has been given more administrative responsibilities.  In a recent reshuffling of his coaching staff, Utah coach Rick Majerus made Judkins an offer similar to the one extended by the Cougars, and Judkins contacted Coach Cleveland about openings at the Y.  While no coaching slots were open, Judkins was offered the job as Director, which has been vacant since Lynn Archibald passed away two years ago.

Judkins is credited with helping the Utes land top LDS recruits such as Alex Jensen, Jon Carlisle, and Britton Johnsen.

The Mountain West Conference, which officially begins operation July 1, has finalized its composite football schedule for the 1999 football season.  The first MWC intraconference game is scheduled for Thursday, September 16, when BYU plays host to Colorado State in Provo.

The eight MWC schools will play a challenging non-conference schedule, competing against most Division I conferences this year, including Wyoming's season opener against defending national champion Tennessee.

Two possible recruits heading to Utah

Chris Burgess, who originally snubbed BYU for Duke two years ago, has decided to leave Duke and transfer to another university's basketball program. He has stated that his first choice is Utah and that BYU is not one of his options. He ruled out BYU because there has not been enough time to evaluate Coach Cleveland in his first two years.

Chad Jacobsen, a two-sport star at Springville High School has signed to play football at Utah. BYU had extended a scholarship offer in football to Jacobsen, but did not lend much interest in basketball. He has expressed the desire to play both sports in college and says that Utah has said they will provide that opportunity.
