After demolishing #8-ranked Hawaii in three straight games Thursday night, the #1 men's volleyball team turns its sights to a red-hot USC team that has defeated #4 Pepperdine and #2 Long Beach State on its route to this MPSF championship game.  The winner of tonight's match receives and automatic bid to the NCAA Championships next weekend.  BYU is already assured of at least an at-large bid.

The match will be held in BYU's Smith Fieldhouse at 7pm (MST). KBYU-TV will broadcast the game delayed one hour starting at 8pm (MST).

For the second night in a row the bat of Oscar Lopez was fatal for BYU as Fresno State won Friday, 7-2.  Lopez, a shortstop who is the last batter in the Bulldog order, hit a single to centerfield to score Jason Fanconi with what proved to be the winning run.  Fanconi had doubled in that second inning and his run broke a 1-1 deadlock.

FSU, now 30-26 overall and 11-12 in the Western Athletic Conference, hosts BYU, 20-29 and 7-15, in the final game of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. MST in a game which can be heard live on KSRR Radio (1400 AM).

QB battle may finish with a Ty

Browns quarterback Ty Detmer is armed and ready for the battle to keep his starting job.  An eight-year NFL veteran, he already knows what he's up against.

"I knew coming in that they were probably going to take Tim Couch," said Detmer. "There was no real drama in the draft for me. You heard about them taking Akili Smith, but no matter who it was, the situation was going to be the same for me."

It's Mili's time to impress Seahawks
See: http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/html98/hawk_19990425.html

This might be the most important time in Itula Mili's NFL life.

The Seahawk tight end is taking most of the snaps because starter Christian Fauria is out with a foot injury, backup Deems May is recovering from a knee injury and the rookies are still learning the playbook.

So Mili, a third-year veteran from Brigham Young, has a chance to impress the new coaching staff.

Last Meetings 4/08/94:  Penn State won

Match Overview

BYU enters its first ever Final Four game as the #1 seed and the #1 ranked team in the nation.  The Cougars began the season on an 18 match tear, breaking the previous BYU record of 13 straight wins.  Of the 29 matches this season, the Y has won 19 of them 3-0.  Even more impressive is to realize that 12 of those 19 matches were against nationally ranked opponents.  Since falling to #2 Long Beach State in a thrilling volleyball marathon on March 19th, the team is on a 10 match streak, and has lost only two games during that stretch.  The Cougars have had three different players (Ryan Millar, Ossie Antonetti, and Mac Wilson) earn AVCA National Player-of-the-Week Honors, the most by any school this year.  Also, for the first time, all six starters for the Cougs were named All-Americans.

Penn State brings a great tradition to this year's NCAA Championship Tournament.  This being their 14th appearance, the Nittany Lions have been to more Final Fours than the other three participants combined.  In 1994, they became the first and only non-California team to have won the volleyball national championship.  Their record of 22-12 this season is deceiving.  They suffered a horrible start, dropping each of their first seven matches, but have since rebounded, losing only five of their final 27 contests.  PSU is currently riding a six match winning streak.  They hasn't fared well against BYU's conference this year -- five of their 12 losses have come against MPSF teams.  Also, despite going undefeated in conference play this year, Penn State is a meager 2-11 on the season versus ranked opponents.  Also notable:  PSU is only 2-5 on neutral courts this season.  However, they have been efficient against BYU, having won all seven matchups over the years, four of which have been played since BYU has been NCAA-sanctioned.

Implications

This is what head coach Carl McGown has been dreaming of since coming to BYU.  His efforts have been directed at a club team, then at a fledgling NCAA competitor that was routinely handed embarassing losses, and now, the team is finally among the elite.  Winning two more matches will bring the ultimate trophy -- a national championship.  It all comes down to being able to pull off two more wins, and it all starts tonight with Penn State.  A loss will end a good season, sending the Cougars home, wondering what might have been.  A win will propel them to the national championship game.

Keys to the Game

Penn State runs a very deceptive offense, so defensive recognition will be important for the Y.

However, BYU has the talent to win the match -- if that talent is healthy.  Yesterday, Ryan Millar and Ossie Antonetti missed practice because of severe flu-like symptoms.  Millar suffered from similar ailments before the MPSF Championship last weekend.  Before that match, a team physician gave him an injection, which made him drowsy, but he felt better and was able to play a huge role in the Cougars' win over USC.  Now Antonetti is down with similar symptoms.

Coach McGown basically said that the two stars are going to have to gut it out (no pun intended).  "In terms of overcoming the bug, we think Ryan's ahead, but it doesn't matter really how sick they are (Thursday), they're going to have to get in the match," McGown said.  "We don't have contingencies for those two guys. Play is the contingency plan."

Players to Watch

BYU

#3 -- Ossie Antonetti (OH):  Standing only 6'1", this product of Puerto Rico plays like he's six inches taller.  Simply stated, the guy can fly.  A First Team All-American for the second consecutive season, he leads the Cougars with 489 kills this season (5.82 average per game), and has recorded five double-double performances.  Against Hawai'i earlier this season, he pounded home 41 kills, just seven short of the all-time BYU record.

#12 -- Ryan Millar (MB):  The most well-rounded player in BYU's history, he leads the nation in blocks per game (2.14) and hitting percentage (.498).  He is the BYU all-time leader in kills, attack attempts, block solos, block assists and total blocks.  He has also set the BYU single-season record for block solos and block assists, giving him ownership of 11 total school records.  In 1996, he was named the NCAA Freshman of the Year, and was named First Team All-American in 1997, 1998, and 1999.

Penn State

#12 -- Tony Mazzullo (SH):  He anchors the PSU back row with 260 digs over 110 games, averaging a team-leading 2.36 digs per game.  He had 25 kills, seven digs, and five blocks against New Jersey Tech in the EIVA Championship match.

#13 -- Sergio Pampena (MB):  This team leader is hitting 48.5 percent on the season, landing him in third place nationally.  Pampena has tallied 444 kills (4.48 k/pg) on 715 attempts with 97 errors.  He also leads the PSU roster with 132 total blocks, averaging 1.33 per game.  He dished out a career-high 29 kills in Penn State's come-from-behind conference championship match.

Match Overview

BYU shook off stomach pains and early jitters to defeat Penn State in Thursday night's semi-final match. The Cougars dropped game one before reeling off three straight wins to seal the match against the Nittany Lions. Now Long Beach poses a huge challenge for the Cougs in the most
important match they've ever played. Traditionally, the Y has had a tough time with the 49ers, winning only four of the 16 matches in which they've met, and only three of 12 since they begain competing as an NCAA-sanctioned entity. However, the team is ready to forget the past
and create a little of their own history. The Cougars can become only the second school from outside of California and the fourth from outside Los Angeles County to win it all, joining San Diego State (1973), Penn State (1994) and Stanford (1997).

Long Beach State makes its fifth NCAA Championship appearance, having won it all in 1991. "The Beach" boasts the second-best record in the nation, and finished first in the Pacific Division of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, becoming, along the way, the only team to beat
every other MPSF school this season. LBSU dug themselves an early hole in Thursday's matchup with Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne, falling behind 2 games to 1 before winning games four and five in a three-plus hour match that went into the wee hours of Friday morning. The 49ers, who play before somewhat of a home crowd at Pauley Pavilion, will be anxious to prove that their victory over the Cougars earlier this season was not a fluke. Also at stake: Long Beach will try to become only the second school in NCAA history to win men's and women's volleyball titles in the
same year, following Stanford's dual championship two years ago.

Implications

A lot comes into play for BYU tonight. Their only loss on the season came at the hands of Long Beach, so the chance to redeem themselves and effectually erase it has to be on the minds of the Cougars. But to cut to the chase, this is the national championship. Not much else needs to
be said.

Players to Watch

BYU

#3 -- Ossie Antonetti (OH): Ossie added to his heroics against Penn State, recording 24 kills, six blocks, and 14 digs. The guy's just plain fun to watch.

#5 -- Mac Wilson (MB): Just a sophomore, "Big Mac" has hit .470 this year, which ranks him fourth nationally. He also ranks third in blocks.  He notched 11 kills on match-best .588 hitting versus Penn State. He also had eight blocks, including the match winner.

#12 -- Ryan Millar (MB): The best player in the history of BYU volleyball had 20 kills and a .469 hitting percentage on Thursday while battling illness for the second straight match.

Long Beach State

#6 -- Matt Prosser (MB): Just a sophomore, this 6'7" middle blocker had a double-double on Thursday against IPFW.

#8 -- Dave McKienzie (OH): According to his coach, this sophomore from Littleton, CO seems to step things up a notch in important games. He set a Long Beach final four tourney record on Thursday night by knocking down 37 kills in the 49ers' five game win over IPFW. Even more impressive, he set the NCAA record with 58 kills in Provo earlier this year.

Men's Volleyball Wins NCAA Championship

As you all know, the men's volleyball team earned its first national championship on Saturday in impressive fashion, downing the Long Beach State 49ers in three straight games.  The team finished the season 30-1 and became only the second non-California school in the 30 year history of the tournament to take the title.

The Cougars join an elite group of schools to have won the championship.  Only eight teams share the thirty titles:  UCLA leads the pack with 17, followed by Pepperdine and USC with four championships each, and BYU, Stanford, Penn State, Long Beach State, and San Diego State with one apiece.

The championship is BYU's fifth overall.  The Cougars also won national titles in men's outdoor track and field in 1970, men's golf in 1981, football in 1984, and women's cross country in 1997.

Many interesting articles have been written about the championship, including:

“I am very pleased with Jeff's decision to come to BYU,” said men's basketball coach Steve Cleveland.  “He joins an outstanding staff that is energetic and committed to rebuilding this program.  I love Jeff's passion for the game and his ability to develop strong relationships with the players.  Jeff's efforts will be a great asset to the basketball operations of both the men's and women's programs at BYU.”

See:   http://www.sltrib.com/1999/may/05141999/sports/105380.htm

Officials from the Mountain West Conference and the Liberty Bowl have reached an agreement that will pit the football champions of the MWC and Conference USA in the Memphis based bowl for the next three years.  Bowl officials hope for the same strong television ratings that accompanied last season's BYU - Tulane matchup.

Also in the works is a deal to send the MWC runner-up to the Las Vegas Bowl.  League officials are also hoping to guarantee the third place team a post-season slot, perhaps in one of the Hawai'i bowls.

"This is something I have always wanted to do," Millar said. "I have to go out there and play well and show them what I can do.  Hopefully I will end up playing in the Olympics in 2002."

With the National Team, Millar will compete in several international competitions over the summer and into next year. According to Millar, his play during these competitions will go a long way in helping head coach Doug Beal determine the three-time All-American's ability to play at the Olympic level.

Trackster Myles-Mills 'Takes It Easy' in Running a 10.04
See:   http://www.sltrib.com/1999/may/05131999/sports/105136.htm

BYU sprinter Leonard Myles-Mills, recently back from a hamstring injury, ran an impressive 10.04 in the 100 meters on Wednesday at the Utah Collegiate Track & Field Championships.  The most impressive part of the time is that he slowed up at the end of the race because he didn't want to reinjure his leg.

A senior from Ghana, he is last year's NCAA champion and is a favorite to repeat this year.  His time on Wednesday was the second-fastest run by any collegian this year, just behind a 10.03 run last month by Auburn's Coby Miller

Former Lady Cougar Gallup Earns 2nd Shot with the Starzz
See:   http://www.sltrib.com/1999/may/05181999/sports/106411.htm

Kari Gallup, a former BYU women's hoop star, may find a spot in the WNBA with the Utah Starzz this season after failing to make the team last year.  After making it through a tryout camp a few weeks ago, she's ready to showcase her shooting abilities for new Starzz coach Frank Layden.

During her four years as a Cougar, Gallup set school career records for three-point shots made (201), 3 point field goal percentage (44%), and free throw percentage (83%).  In the event that she doesn't make the final cuts with the Starzz, Gallup will play in Europe, as she did last year.

Tracksters Set to Compete for WAC Outdoor Championships
See:   http://CougarFan.com/teams/track/news/1999/05-18.html

The nationally-ranked BYU men's and women's track & field teams are competing in the WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Ft. Collins, CO this week.

On the men's side, BYU will look to take home a second-straight outdoor WAC title in the team's final WAC competition. The Cougars have won 12 conference outdoor championships since 1980, including a string of nine straight from 1985-1993.

In women's action, the Cougars will complete with a host of 15 All-Americans and looking to capture their 17th straight conference title, including the team's ninth consecutive WAC trophy. Currently ranked second in the nation, the Cougars are heavily favored entering the meet, however they may receive some competition from 19th-ranked Fresno State or 30th-ranked Colorado State.

Golf Team Aims for Nationals
See:   http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=10835

The BYU men's golf team will be in Tucson, AZ, for the rest of the week to compete in the NCAA West Regional Championship.  Three straight wins have propelled the Cougars to rankings of #10 and #15 in the two major national polls.

Head coach Bruce Brockbank likes his team's chances of taking the tournament, even with the likes of 2nd ranked UNLV and #5 Arizona State participating, along with eleven other ranked teams.  A total of eighteen teams are competing, with the top nine advancing to the NCAA Championship in Chaska, MN.  A Championship round berth would be the Cougars' first in six years.
