Nelson, Bills commit to BYU football

Orem High free safety Adam Nelson, the brother of BYU safety Tyler Nelson, committed Tuesday to sign with the Cougars.  Last week, linebacker Casey Bills, from Littleton, Colorado attended the BYU football camp, received a scholarship offer and promptly committed.

Bills has also started at tailback the last three years for his high school team.  "I'm kind of an old-fashioned player," he said. "Hard-nosed. I like to hit. "I don't make a lot of moves at tailback. It's just smashmouth."

Nelson plans on serving an LDS mission right out of high school and will be available for duty with the football team for the 2002 season.

These mark the third and fourth early commitments the Cougars have received already this recruiting season.
 

Cleveland Will Stay Put As BYU Coach

With the recent resignation of Rondo Fehlberg as athletic director, some people have postulated that change is in the air, and that Steve Cleveland could be replaced as the head basketball coach.  That rumor is just that -- a rumor.

The school administration knows that Coach Cleveland stepped into a program that would take time to overhaul, and he is on schedule with the rebuilding process.  The article goes on to talk about current BYU recruits.
 

Cougars Ready to Unveil New Logo

BYU is about to make the first major changes to the appearance of its athletic apparel since the '60s, but for the time being, the new look is being pretty closely guarded.

An invitation-only viewing of the new football uniforms is scheduled for August 16th, but until then, those who are in the know have promised to stay quiet.
 

Fehlberg Leaves but his Heart Stays at BYU

Few people are as dedicated to BYU as Rondo Fehlberg.  Since being an all-American wrestler for the Cougars years ago, he has remained an avid, interested fan, and is happy to have served the school as athletic director for the past four years.

"I was an athlete here and I love BYU athletics, but my loyalty to BYU is not confined just to athletics. I had the same thrill about being a part of the law school at BYU as I had being on the wrestling team and I've felt no different as athletic director," said Fehlberg.
 

Myles-Mills Close Second

On Saturday, former BYU track star Leonard Myles-Mills came in second in the 100 meters at the St. Denis Grand Prix in France.  His time of 10.13 seconds was just 1/100th of a second off that of Britain's Dwain Chambers.

Future RB Fahu Tahi Scores 2 TDs in All-Star Game

Future BYU running back Fahu Tahi carried his weight in a recent Utah all-star football game.  His Class 5-A team soundly defeated the 4-A all-stars by a tally of 30-0.  Tahi registered rushing touchdowns of 10 and five yards to lead all scorers.

Another Cougar-to-be, wide receiver Chris Hale from Orem, also had an impressive game.  His 52-yard reception in the fourth quarter set up his ensuing 4-yard TD grab for the game's final score.
 

Basketball Star Recruit Dawes Still Leaning Toward BYU

The telephone at Derek Dawes' home has been getting a lot of use latel= y.  Since June 21, the date when NCAA rules allowed college coaches to start contacting recruits by phone, the 6-foot-10 Cottonwood (UT) high star has been fielding 15 to 20 calls per day from the coaches of top programs acr= oss the country, including Duke, UConn, UCLA, and Ohio State.

All of the attention leads him to consider his options, but for the time being Dawes lists BYU as his top choice.  He points to the Coug= ar coaching staff as one of the Y's biggest attractions.

Dawes, whose recent performance in the Nike All-American Camp has only fueled the firestorm of calls, is considered to be one of the top 100 hig= h school players in the nation, and the 3rd ranked center in the West.
 

Basketball Legends Game Renews Old Rivalries

Friday night marks another chapter in the history of the annual "Legen= ds" game, a grudge match of sorts between former BYU and UofU basketball play= ers.  The Cougars' roster will feature such past players as Mark Durrant, Jeff Chatman, Greg Kite, and Fred Roberts.

Although the primary purpose of the event is to serve as a fundraiser for the Utah Youth Village and to give the players a chance to get togeth= er for a reunion, coming away with a win is at the forefront of the players' minds.  "I think the saying goes -- church first, family second, bea= ting Utah third," said Kite, who played with the Cougars from 1979-1983.
 

Give Feterik time in 1999 before calling for a switch

This Daily Herald writer calls for patience with Kevin Feterik.  He compares Feterik's junior season with a similar junior season for Stev= e Young.  Young had a stellar senior season.  With more passing this season, the writer suggests Feterik could have a great senior season also.
 

Harvey Wins State Amateur Golf Tourney

BYU golfer Billy Harvey won handily at the Utah State Am at the Hill Air Force Base golf course this past weekend, shooting an incredible firs= t round score of 65 in terribly windy conditions.  He was consistent throughout the tournament, sinking eight or more birdies in four differen= t rounds. The victory marks the first win by a current Cougar in a major state event for amateurs since 1992.  Harvey will be a junior at the Y this fall, and plans on playing two more years for the Cougars before pursuing a career on the pro tour.

Rumor Highlights What LaVell Means to BYU Football

Last week as LaVell Edwards enjoyed a golfing vacation, rumors began to race through Provo that he would be retiring immediately because doctors had informed him that his heart was too weak to continue coaching.

The rumors were unfounded, but they caused people to consider who would take over the reins of the BYU football program if LaVell were to step down.  The article mentions some of the frontrunners for the job, and points out that when the time comes, they will have some big shoes to fill because of Coach Edwards' popularity and reputation on a national scale.
 

Brigham Young Becoming a Football Factory -- for Big Sky Schools

This article talks about former BYU football players Drew Miller, Mike Rigell, and Ronney Jenkins and their impact on different Big Sky schools.  Miller and Rigell transferred to the University of Montana, while Jenkins ended up at Northern Arizona.

Big Sky coaches say that Miller is the class of the league when it comes to quarterbacks.  He arrived at Montana just in time, since they were a team with skill all over the field except under center.  They have a shot at the Division I-AA national championship, but Jenkins' Lumberjacks of NAU will provide stiff competition from inside the conference.
 

Former BYU Basketball Player Attacked on Campus

When former BYU hoopster Danny Bower asked a group of visitors at the Richards PE Building to stop acting inappropriately, they attacked him, leaving him with a concussion, broken nose, and back trauma.  Bower's wife was coming out of the Smith Fieldhouse and broke it up, and then realized it was her husband that had been beaten up.

The half dozen young men had been throwing basketballs at furniture in the RB and using vulgar language, and Bower, who thought that they were participants in a BYU basketball camp, told them to stop it.  They followed him out to the parking lot, where the incident occurred.

Norma Collette, director of Athletic Media Relations at BYU wasn't surprised that Bower stood up to the group.  "It's just like him to do something like that. He's one of the top student-athletes here."
 

Toolson Is the Star, But Utah Gets Win

Friday night in the Marriott Center, Utah was able to pull off a close 112-107 win in the annual BYU vs. Utah Legends Game.  The game was within reach for the Y in the final minute, but the Utes held on and made their foul shots to keep the Cougs at bay.

The article details the professional career of Andy Toolson, who had 16 points for BYU.  After narrowly losing a spot on the Utah Jazz roster to Bryon Russell, Toolson has played in Europe for the past few years.

BYU's Kenneth Roberts led all scorers with 31 points, while Tom Chambers had 30 and Byron Wilson added 28 for the Utes.  Newly hired BYU director of basketball operations Jeff Judkins scored 12 points for Utah.
 

Pullins Has New Job, New Uniform:  A Suit

Former BYU baseball head coach Gary Pullins is finding out that life is different in his new job as assistant athletic director, but is doing his best to make the transition a smooth one.

He didn't realize how much he would miss coaching until three weeks after the shift in duties.  "I was just fine with the change until I sat behind home plate and watched the first pitch of the College World Series," he says. "Then it was a little tough."

Assistant Bob Noel is considered the frontrunner for the coaching vacancy.

LaVell Edwards plays 20 questions

BYU football coach Lavell Edwards answered 20 questions from Dirk Facer of the Deseret News.  About retiring, Coach Edwards said, "When that comes, it'll come. But right now, I don't have any clue as to when that'll be."  He mentioned that he and his wife would probably serve a mission after he retired.  Edwards expressed excitement for the season to start, but said the schedule this year is tough.

Bower Appreciative of Support

It's been more than a week since former BYU basketball player Danny Bower was assaulted on campus at the Y.  He's been at home recovering from reconstructive surgery on his nose, and has been surprised by all of the support given by the community.  "I get about 15 messages a day, mostly from well-wishers," said Bower.  "It makes me feel really appreciated."
 

Basketball Coaches Concentrate on Being Seen by Recruits

During the most important time of the year for recruiting the next generation of hoop stars, college basketball coaches do all they can to be in contact with the high school greats without crossing the NCAA-enforced boundaries.

One way that Steve Cleveland and his staff (along with coaches from the rest of the nation's programs) keep in touch with recruits is by attending all-star camps such as the recent Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas.  The article points out some creative, if not entertaining, methods which coaches use to improve their exposure to the players.

Detmer needing to recapture fire of his college days

One of the various NBA summer leagues, the NBA Revue in Salt Lake City, started this week.  Among the rookies invited to the league was former BYU and Michigan guard Robbie Reid.  The interesting twist is that Reid was invited to the summer camp by the Suns, where his father, former BYU basketball coach Roger Reid, now is an assistant coach.

Cougs Picked to Win First MWC Football Title

The preseason media and coaches' polls for the 1999 Mountain West Conference football season were released yesterday, with BYU being picked to take the first conference championship.  Both polls agreed on the top four spots, listing Air Force, San Diego State, and Utah to finish behind the Y.

Several Cougars were named to the preseason all-conference team, including Rob Morris, who is the favorite for MWC player of the year.  Also making the list were Kevin Feterik, Byron Frisch, Brian Gray, and Owen Pochman.
 

First MWC game will be big party

The Mountain West Conference is planning a big bash at Cougar Stadium on Sept. 16 to kick off the new conference.  ESPN will be televising the game, most of the univerisity presidents will be in attendance, and the first 8000 fans will receive "MWC First Kickoff" hats.

Writers from each of the MWC schools soaked in the personality of Rob Morris at the recent MWC meetings in Colorado Springs.  "He's a quote machine. And he backs it up with bone-crushing play on the field.  In short, he's a sports writer's dream.  Morris has the innate ability to verbalize his feelings, describe situations and give a showtime-like spin to the world of sports."

One quote from Morris about Laramie, Wyoming:  "I've heard a lot of things about Laramie," he said during media interviews Monday. "I've yet to hear anything good.  I talked to their coach and he didn't have anything good to say about Laramie. I've heard about the fans.  They throw things, but I like that.  I think that's how the game should be played. If Ray Nitschke and Sam Huff were playing there, they'd probably throw things back.  I'm thinking about putting a red target on my back."

A number of articles this past week have highlighted the Honor Code and the media flurry caused when star athletes are disciplined or leave school amidst reviews of infractions.  Some people, including current athletes, have suggested that the school is enforcing the Honor Code more strictly now than in the past.  The administration says it is not.

One tool that has been implemented recently is the newly formed Student Athlete Center.  The administration hopes that the Center will help non-LDS students to understand and adjust to standards that haven't necessarily been the norm for them.

Also, in an effort to protect the privacy of individual students, the Honor Code Office may begin to refuse comment when contacted by reporters about any given student-athlete.
 

Injury Leaves Recruit Meads Out, But May Give Him a Better Left Hand

Brighton High School senior-to-be Garner Meads hit a speed bump on the road to fame and notoriety in April when he broke his right wrist.  Because of the injury, he wasn't able to make this summer's Nike All-American Camp in Indiana, or the Adidas Big Time tournament in Las Vegas.  However, the 6'9" power forward has been working out with former BYU coach Tony Ingle, who has helped him to develop his left handed skills during the recovery time.

Meads, who is the top-rated power forward in the west, and is ranked by one publication as the 19th best college prospect in the nation, has narrowed his choices of possible schools to Stanford, Utah, UCLA, Kentucky, Arizona and BYU.
 

Basketball Worries Rear their Heads in MWC Meetings

Although talk of the upcoming football season dominated the Mountain West Conference's first media day, commisioner Craig Thompson has basketball on his mind.  The NCAA is deciding whether to immediately grant the MWC basketball champion an automatic berth to its tournament in March, or to make it wait a year or two.

Officially, new leagues are supposed to wait for two years before their champion gets an automatic berth in March Madness, but the MWC is unique in that the schools that comprise it are not new to each other.  "To qualify, you're supposed to have three schools which have been together for five years," Thompson explained.

One reason the NCAA is hesitant to hand out an automatic berth is that it doesn't want to promote more conference realignments.
 

Mountain West in the Running For Two More Bowl Berths

MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson announced Monday that the league is being "heavily considered" for two more bowl openings.  The MWC has already inked deals with the Liberty Bowl and the Las Vegas Bowl, so potentially half of the conference could end up in bowl games.
